Up, up, and away...

A likely spell list:

0-Level:
Create Water
Detect Magic
Light
Read Magic
Resistance

1st level:
Bless
Command
Sanctuary
Summon Monster I
Domain Spell: Longstrider

2nd level:
Calm Emotions
Delay Poison
Hold Person
Summon Monster II
Domain Spell: Locate Object

3rd level:
Dispel Magic
Searing Light
Summon Monster III

...and let's not forget...
Domain Spell: Fly

A few quick questions and heads up kind of things:

I have made sure that I have no commitments from Friday, October 12th through Tuesday, October 16th. Is this about right, or should I move this around a bit?

How many days for this year's Holtcon? (I'm prepared for up to five, should circumstances permit.) Does anyone want to crash at my pad any or all of the evenings? What sorts of munchies and drinkables are you all interested in?

I have my own queen-sized bed and a futon that might sleep two. I'm willing to invest in some air mattresses and extra sheets to accomodate anyone who wants to spend one or more evenings here. There is an extra room which I basically use to store old comics and textbooks, but there's plenty of room in there for two, even three to sleep, should that be necessary.

Bret and I are confabbing about a proper table and seating for gaming.

So...that should do it.

It turns out my church is having an event on that Sunday night so I will most likely be unavailable at that time. The rest of the weekend and week following should be open though.

Re: Up, up, and away...

I'm still swamped right now, so I've had little opportunity for a thorough review of everyone's leveled character--I should be able to get around to that this weekend.  I will post additional material and synopsis content at that time, as well.

I fly in on Friday morning, and will be leaving on Monday evening.  All times in between, with the exception of prep/rest time before noon on Friday, are wide open.  I sorta anticipated firing up the gaming on Friday afternoon, continuing into the evening and night, and shutting down in the wee hours on Saturday.  Then, after some much-needed rest, we fire up again around 11ish/noon on Saturday, and go until we drop.  Sunday late morning will provide for character leveling mechanics, should we need it (i.e. if we don't do it at the end of our Saturday night blitz).

Mini Me

Hey all,

Bring yer favorite, metal or otherwise, representation of your character to the festivities.  I'm counting on Scott or Bret to remember to bring the minatures we used last Con (mostly orcs and human warriors--some useful plastic figures, as I recall), and I'm planning a quick trip to the local hobby shop on Friday morning to pick up some more miniatures tailored for the weekend's adventures.

Questions?

Treasure & Housekeeping

Below I've compiled our treasure list and assigned it to the party member that requested/deserves it. This is provisional, if I've assigned something to you that you do not want, or you want to trade, please let me know. I've also listed the current order for selecting future treasures. I think this is fair and consistent with our groups history but let me know if I've made a mistake.

Major Items:
+3 Bracers of Armor
+1 Ring of Natural Armor
+2 orcish dagger--unclaimed
+2 cloak of resistance--tattered wyvern skin
+2 light mace--from Rhendon, mace head shaped like a wolf's head

Restricted or Party Items:
1 Charcoal Stick:  Inscribe Runic Commands (Divine)
Cleric Scroll, all spells @ 3rd level:  Read Magic, Command, Comprehend Languages

Aracane Scroll, all spells @ 3rd level:  Comprehend Languages, Eagle's Splendor
Potion:  Cure Serious Wounds @ 5th level

Minor Items:
Potion:  Bear's Endurance @3rd level
Potion:  Spider Climb @3rd level
Potion:  Bear's Endurance @ 5th level
Potion:  Endure Elements @ 5th level
2 vials dwarven acid
Silver and onyx bracelet--worth 450 gp.
Masterwork dwarven dagger
A finely cut tourmaline and a small cloak fastener--gold with jet inlays in the shape of a hammer:  worth a total of 800 gp
2 large emeralds, each worth 2000 gp.

Aidrin ap Gynwir:
     +3 Bracers of Armor
Aracane Scroll, all spells @ 3rd level: Comprehend Languages, Eagle's Splendor

Asher Willbourne:
     +1 Ring of Natural Armor

Caylin Direbrook:
+2 cloak of resistance--tattered wyvern skin

Garryn the Grey:
     No selection

Gilrak Kilring:
     Masterwork dwarven dagger
     2 vials dwarven acid

Perrato Viatomagne:
1 Charcoal Stick:  Inscribe Runic Commands (Divine)
Cleric Scroll, all spells @ 3rd level:  Read Magic, Command, Comprehend Languages

+2 light mace--from Rhendon, mace head shaped like a wolf's head

Totmacher of the Wilds:
     No Selection

KEY:
  Red   = magical item selection
Green = item useless to other character classes or that benefits party
Blue  = minor selection offset by cash

FUTURE TREASURE SELECTION ORDER:
  1. Garryn (retains 1st since the two appealing items were bracers and ring of natural armor and Aidrin and Asher benefit more from them.)
  2. Gilrak (minor item selections offset cash not selection order)
  3. Totmacher
  4. Caylin
  5. Perrato
  6. Aidrin
  7. Asher

Also I was temporarily using Vil's ring of charisma or whatever it was called (+2 bonus to Charisma) which I will give back to Totmacher and suggest that it might best be used by Perrato since he has the highest Diplomacy skill.

Re: Treasure & Housekeeping

Hey all,

Note that, when all gems, jewelery, and the +2 orcish dagger (assuming no one wants this--might be a big assumption) are pooled, with an approximate 10% conversion charge, the party ends up with 20,000 gp.  Remember that your training expenses have already been covered.

This money can be used to purchase potions, scrolls, or other minor magic items (subject to DM approval) or may be used by the spellcasters to create scrolls in the 2 week window I am allowing for this activity.

Thoughts?

Note also that undead turning attempts and numbers of turns/day are Charisma-based.

Re: Treasure & Housekeeping

Bret,
Thanks for putting the time into this.  This should speed up things prior to next Friday.  I only have two comments on the distribution:

1)  Cloak of Resistance: I'm not sure that another (front-line) character might not benefit more from the cloak of resistance.  If Caylin's performing his normal duties (ranged combat) he should be removed from the area of effect of most spells/fire/acid/etc etc.  Your thoughts?

2)  Ring of Charisma:   I think this should go back to Vil. ;)

Cheers,
Jas

I'm up for this path. That would leave 1186 gp/character.  Any limiting factors for item selection we should be conscious of Kevin??

Re: Treasure & Housekeeping

Jason/everyone,

1)  Cloak of Resistance: I'm not sure that another (front-line) character might not benefit more from the cloak of resistance.  If Caylin's performing his normal duties (ranged combat) he should be removed from the area of effect of most spells/fire/acid/etc etc.  Your thoughts?

Well, Caylin was due to select before Gilrak or Totmacher, and this was the only item available that would interest him. I know Totmacher isn't interested in it, but if Gilrak wants it, I don't think it would be a problem, it would drop Gilrak to last and put Caylin second in the order for future treasure.

2)  Ring of Charisma:   I think this should go back to Vil. ;)

Vil can have it...all he has to do is speak up.

Other Items:

I don't think we should get rid of the +2 dagger, Gilrak and Garryn do not have magical weapons yet, so until both do it should go to one of them in case we face a foe that is resistant to non-magical weapons.  Since Gilrak is more of a front line fighter I think he should hold it until he acquires a more suitable weapon at which time it should be passed on to whoever needs it. This should not count as a selection, just using party property.

Jason Howell will be attending

I just received a phone call from my friend Jason Howell. He had previously been committed as "on call" as the Prosecutor on duty for the weekend of the 13/14th in the thriving Metropolis of Rolle, Missouri and could not attend.

A co-worker's plans changed so that they needed off this weekend and could work for him the following weekend and therefore Jason will now be joining us.

He intends to play a bard, probably human but possibly half-elf. He'll be using the 32 point buy system (as the rolls I made for him cost 32 pts anyway.

Re: Loot

I should fess up that Asher was given the ring of natural armour to wear but it was also considered "holding party property" at the time.

While it is one of the few items of armour available to the monk that does not negate his WIS bonus to AC, Asher did gain a level bonus to his AC recently; so, there is merit to the idea that it might need to be redistributed.

There is also merit in the idea that Asher is a good candidate for the cloak of resistence as it plays to his already highish saves and sets him up as one of our weapons against spellcasters. And since I am considering the Occult Slayer PrC for him in the future it has some RP value as well.

So, is there a character who needs the ring more than Asher or should we leave things as they are?

Treasure Correction

Hey all,

Upon further review (i.e. with the rules in front of me instead of trying to wing it), I have revised the total party gold upward to reflect the 50% selling price of the orcish dagger, should you choose to sell it.  In that case, the total amount of party cash, along with liquidating gems and jewelery (@~10% conversion rate), will be 20,000 gp.  This seems more in line with the campaign currently.

Let me know if you want to get rid of the dagger--+2 with an unholy enchantment.

Cool - thanks Kev.  My vote is for trading in the +2 unholy dagger.  If the party agrees, this should provide each party member th 2,857 gp.

Re: Treasure Correction

Ahh, Unholy, that changes things. Yeah, while I think UNHOLY would make a cool vanity license plate, I'm not to keen on having it as a dagger.

Asher, I think everyone would basically like the Ring of Natural Armor, the only reason I gave it to you was that it was one of a few items that you could use to lower your AC, if you'd prefer the Cloak of Resistance then Garryn will certainly take the Ring and the revised order would be:

FUTURE TREASURE SELECTION ORDER:
  1. Caylin
  2. Gilrak (minor item selections offset cash not selection order)
  3. Totmacher
  4. Garryn
  5. Perrato
  6. Aidrin
  7. Asher

Umm, Bret? Will I remain on the bottom of that list until the day that you pry the improved ring of jumping from Asher's cold dead hand? <grin>

Although I will probably regret this by round 3 of our first combat, I'll turn in the ring for the cloak. That should leave Garryn and Asher with the same AC (wish I had your mobility) on game day.

Now I just have to hope we fight a hoard of evil sorcerers insted of Gnolls and Ogres.

Brian:  In point of fact, yes, until that shiny, bouncy ring encircles one of Garryn's digits, you pick last. Alternately we rotate through the party and anyone who does not make a selection moves up and the last person to choose is last with some fudging for items of great or small worth. (If it had been a +3 Ring then I'd be last on the list...check that, I'd be second to last, you'd still pick after me.)

You wish.  Actually, the entire adventure will consist of fighting gelatinous cubes--no plot, no treasure, no variation.

Look for more synopsis and set-up from Arkexis this weekend, if Scott can refrain from monkey-wrenching this approach by starting a fight or killing someone.

Stuff 'n' Things

OK--sounds like there might be a concensus on getting rid of the orcish dagger for gold.  That way, everyone has 2857 gp to spend on gear.  Use the PHB and DMG to purchase whatever you might want, but make sure you run it past me first.  Use the prices indicated in the texts.  If you're like me and use a computer while you're traveling w/o the books, here's a useful SRD site with D&D info:

Seeing as Perrato is going to be the mouthpiece for the group, for the short term at least, perhaps he should get the Ring of Charisma. Just a thought. I'm flexible, and I'm not terribly greedy for magic.

I'm still debating about prepping a stack of cure scrolls for the party. It might get kinda expensive. Perhaps even a few will help.

Looking forward to seeing you all here this weekend.
