We have an interesting dynamic in our game, I think.
It started as almost a 'sidekick' thing, but now that my dude
Is having memory flashbacks it's more friendly/familial?

If you have access to your fellow players characters and want to add them here so they made recovered by them at a later date I can provide a thread for that as well.

Hopefully that way we can avoid them returning to find the game and their character gone.

Too bad to see those games go down for good. I hope Bones is OK.

Re: OOOC Off Topic

After cutting/pasting a bunch of chargen thread posts link to a message in another game together, found the "meet the characters" threadlink to a message in another game
(w/Carapace's full character sheet at bottom):

Carapace (born Calvin Pace) stands approximately 6'2", and is built like a linebacker.  He is always conscious about where he is stepping, as it is not unusual for him to crash through some poorly constructed floor, or a deck built of unknowingly rotted timbers.  Puerto Rican by birth- but raised in California- his olive complexion is more olive than usual.  Upon closer inspection, you can see slight creases along the seams of his facial features, that almost resemble plates of armor, or the shell of some bug.

You would then notice that no other skin on his body was showing, even on a hot summer day, and you might begin to wonder...

Carapace is always clothed, with only his head and full, dark mane of hair not covered (and even that is in a cap more often than not).  He favors a black, long sleeve, cotton shirt, jeans, boots, gloves, and a Brown leather jacket.  If there is some group costume he will wear it, however begrudgingly.

When it is known that there is going to be trouble, Carapace carries a huge club.

His friends call him "Pace."

Origin Story:  Carapace

Calvin Pace was an assistant marine biologist aiding in the study of the adaptive and curious tendencies of a giant isopod colony, located in a deep abyss of the shore of the Pacific ocean.  In addition to their Chitinous armored exterior and incredible speed- even in the dense ocean- group members at times seemed to go into periods of low energy output which would couple with seemingly impossible associated movements of independent objects at a distance.  Simple things like, rock movement to cover a hole that could potentially allow a predator access to an area.  But were these "occurrences" simply coincidence, or were they scientific evidence of animal telekinesis?

Calvin's Professor- Dr. Kate Dillon- needed to know.

She began studying the creatures religiously, with Calvin never too far away.  Never actually killing any of the animals, she would often collect specimens, run tests on them, and then release them back into the abyss.  It seemed the only place on earth that housed the unique creatures, singular among their species.

Dr. Dillon was able to isolate a unique gland in the brain stem of the isopods that she thought might be the key to the creatures unique abilities.  By harmlessly extracting small amounts of the gland's contents over an extended period of time, Kate was able to synthesize a compound that she postulated could potentially work on humans.

One night, while both Calvin and Kate were working on her boat, a freak storm took the research vessel, tossing it about like a child in a bathtub.

Calvin- an all Pac Ten football player in college- was attempting to secure the compound in accordance to Dr. Dillon's instructions, when a huge wave heaved the boat onto it's side.  Calvin was thrown against a wall that had become the floor...and the compound was thrown against the wall as well, shattering and dousing Calvin in hundreds of doses that mixed with the salt water now rushing into the boat.  The strong elixir, mixed with the salt water, burned away Calvin's taste buds, and he frantically tried to escape the interior of the vessel, his skin, mouth, and inner body aflame with pain.  As he struggled to open a hatch as water began to engulf the capsizing vessel, he noticed Dr. Dillon's dead body float past, neck broken from the impact of the fall, her physical form grotesquely altered.

She had grown a layer of chitinous armor all over her body...and with horror, Calvin realized he had done the same.  The compound apparently had a terrible, unforeseen side effect.

But as the water level rose within the cabin, and he realized the door was barred from the outside, the images of the isopods moving the rocks came to mind...and Calvin instinctively moved the obstruction with his mind.

With no time to think, he stretched his mind out again and seized an inflatable lifeboat- located across the room- which he snapped into his hands, wrapping the cords around his forearms.  He then took a deep breath, opened the door, and as the water rushed in, he thrust the lifeboat through the door and inflated it.

The lifeboat rose to the raging waters above.

Somehow, Calvin managed to climb inside the lifeboat without capsizing it, and he noticed how much his body mass had increased as the boat sagged significantly in the middle where he stayed, and threatened to capsize wildly whenever he moved to one of the edges.

He was found the next day, afloat at sea and unrecognizable.

As the days passed, he began to look more and more normal once more.  His natural Puerto Rican tanned skin tone deepened into a more greenish olive, but it wasn't too dramatic.  The chitinous armor, at one point threatening to completely engulf any trace of human recognition, began to recede into Calvin's natural features, though the plates were still visible under scrutiny.  His hair- which had fallen out- began to grow back through the plates, eventually appearing completely normal.  The Armor, at first large, chunky scales, began to form to his musculature, thankfully returning his humanity as well.  Still, the new armor impeded Calvin's naturally lightning-quick reflexes, and the stuff was heavy; Calvin now tipped the scales at 500 plus pounds.

As Calvin recovered, he found his new telekinetic powers relatively weak, but still useful.  He sometimes pretended he was "using the force," which- in a sense- he was.

Another unforeseen side effect of the serum Calvin had been exposed to was that he could now run incredibly fast- despite his incredible weight, he was now running almost three times as fast as before, while weighing almost three times as much.

Once released from the military compound that held him for testing, and registering with them, Calvin left determined to try to turn Dr. Dillon's sacrifice into something meaningful.  He couldn't bring her back, but perhaps he could honor her memory.

So here is a link to the game I am working on: link to another game

I have not formally opened it for RTJs but I will be looking for about 6 players for the game once I do. Everything is still pretty raw and I need to put together a more cohesive description and structure but people can feel free to comment on what they think of the rough concept.

I have borrowed some stuff regarding mechanics and chargen from other GMs/games.

It is going to be a somewhat slower game, looking at a roughly twice weekly posting rate on average.

We would agree not to 'undo' or 'counter' another GM's post, and we all attempt to post 1x a week or so?
GM's could optionally also have an NPC that levelled at same rate as players (ie no exp received)...?

Not sure how that idea sounds?
I'd like to see 3-4 GM's interested & then start posting our ideas...?

I setup Villains & Vigilantes Council game -- link to another game
Any potential V&V GM's are invited to co-GM.  GM's should have (at minimum) the game rules (pdf/book) and at least a general idea of how the game mechanics work.  You can RTJ and pick a 'Chancellor' name; all GM's will be Chancellors in the V&V Council.

I knew I should have gone with the alien bounty hunter with the Heightened Agility and a Disintegration Ray device... might actually HIT something that way... then again, I'd probably never roll more than single-digit damage on a d20. :)

I have notoriously bad luck with dice servers.  Not just in V&V.  At one point in Burning Bones' game, I was rolling high-teens to-hits, while in a D&D game at the same time, couldn't roll over 11.  O_O

Has anyone else been trying to add their characters to this board?

I ask b/c I've been wanting to add 2-3 more characters

NOTE:  Have folks noticed the "WIKI" tab on RPOL?  Looks like we can update a Wiki for our games..?  I added the V&V link on the main page, would like to see something about various games on there...

Ideas to post:
Summary of the game, list 'cast' (ie heroes/villains), and maybe mention how game's going?
(I always wished my games had a 1pg summary, rather than just the massive OOC thread.)

Apparently, they were named "wiki" after a shuttle bus.

...No, I didn't make that up because I'm posting as Sleepy Jean.  I've always wondered where the word came from, and the answer is, apparently the original creator remembered the "Wiki Wiki Shuttlebus", and liked it because it alliterated and sounded kind of like "quick".

And it is just a word - so, "wiki", not "WIKI".  "Wiki", at the beginning of a sentence.  "WiKi", if you're trying for a cute play on WiFi, but it wouldn't be grammatical.  "wIkI" if you're deeply, deeply narcissistic and only ever - but always! - capitalize the letter I.  But generally, for most people, wiki is fine.

Re: Game in the works...

Wiki wiki means "quick" in Hawaiian, according to: http://c2.com/doc/etymology.html

Another reference & quote: " I chose wiki-wiki as an alliterative substitute for quick and thereby avoided naming this stuff quick-web"
http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?WikiHistory

But none of this really answers Ghost Dog's question, "what's a WIKI?"

Answer: WIKI's are webpages where content can be posted by anyone using WIKI's markup language, which is different than HTML, & content is moderated by the community.

Which is why you or anyone here might want to add to the content on the rpol Wiki.  Another point is you don't generally need to login to see the content, where-as much of what's in RPOL requires a login & acceptance to various game threads.

Now, I am not looking for sympathy but for something else. I am hoping to maybe have some active V&V discussions in here about whatever; house rules, rules as written, inventions, anything really as long as it is V&V. I figure having something else to bounce around in my head will help keep me from focusing overmuch on the above situation when I have no control over it.

I find it hard to 'not' go for special attacks, like head shots, IF you've got the Attk bonus.
Eddy (this char) does, as those in his game knows.   I try to to resort to going for those special attk's except at dramatic and crucial moments ... for fear of loosing their cinematic and dramatic effect.  For fear of their becoming commonplace and blazè, if you know what I mean.

I think a char with high HP, or Invuln, with such ability fall into Bonespikes comment in the other thread: of characters that can dominate combat scenes.
While less combat powerful characters do not have that option.

Then again, I hate combat; so I like a good combat character who can finish combat's fast.
Of course the irony and backlash on that is, as Bonespikes says in that other thread, other characters may be left behind.

Re: Game in the works...

As a player character, I try to make every attack a 'special attack' in some way or another, actually foregoing damage and sometimes the most appropriate attack form to express the character's personality in actions rather than words. Assuming I've done this the entire time, occasionally shooting someone in the back (his back was to me!) or the head becomes just another aspect of the character and not a strategic maneuver.
As a GM, I allow the villain's write-up to suggest whether or not they'll use special attacks. Otherwise I let them be as boring as possible to annoy the PC's into hitting them harder.

I've been in a bunch of games & what I've decided about V&V is that, while some powers are obv out of whack, combos of powers can really make things get interesting.

Oscillator is a flyer & has vibration control x2 (and a few other powers).  So while that might not seem great, he can 'vibra-fly' through the floor, through the ceiling, etc.  I didn't have it all figured out when I made him, but I had his Special Weapon have a 'Heightened Sense' which lets him sense vibration -- so he can see while in materials.
GM has ruled (rightfully, IMO) that Osc can't attack from 100% cover, nor can he breathe in materials (I'm not sure on that), and he's not allowed to pick up a baddie & drop them in a material -- but it's still sweet.

Other nice combos I've seen include High Agi & Absorption (allows a lot of absorbing per round), and an area effect ranged mental attack.

In this game, our team is sorta lacking in mental powers, which makes us susceptible.  I have a new respect for offensive mental powers in V&V.

As for special attacks, I'll do them frequently if it will make a difference.  Almost always have hero with some type of carrier attack.

mobile games are easily the fastest way to play a videogame.

But the smartphone is always with me, so I get in a quick game here & there, or during downtime at work.

As far as worst superhero movies goes (from Danger Room thread),
The Senator:
Ghost Rider really does stick out as the single worse (by a long shot).

I heard Ghost Rider 2 was worse.  Hard to believe, right?  HA

I have to also voice serious disdain for Green Lantern, Daredevil, Hulk (Ang Lee's, where Hulk fights a gamma poodle), and I haven't watched new Spiderman 2, but I disliked new Spiderman 1.  (Also the Spiderman 3 where Spidey encounters black suit but also goes 'Goth' was pretty godawful.)

On a different note, it's *REALLY* cheesy, but I am enjoying the new The Flash TV show.
(I also really liked the old The Flash (with the asinine muscle suit).)

Best Superhero TV show IMO is still 'The Tick'.

Konichi wa comrades,

As you mostly know this year's been a rough one for me, but I hope you all are doing well, and on this night, Christmas Eve, I hope you get a few days of peace and connection with loved ones.  All my best!

Happy 2015 folks!

I've been playing stupid F2P games like Marvel Contest of Champions, Marvel PuzzleQuest, and Injustice on Android.  Man, I know there's a New Years resolution in there somewhere...!

Happy VD to all!  Hope everyone's VD was pleasurable and stimulating.

(If you really have V.D., sorry.  That's a bummer!)

E.Z.:
Marvel Contest of Champions, Marvel PuzzleQuest, and Injustice on Android

Add to that list: Hearthstone, SolForge, Deck Heroes,
but remove Injustice & Contest of Champions (burned out on both).
Still going strong on Marvel Puzzle Quest, tho!

Re: Mobile Superhero gaming

I was rolling up some villains earlier the week. (I'm trying to decide if the name Rubber Maid is too silly to use in a game.) But my real point for posting is looking for help with this power set:

H. Agi A
H. End A
Speed Bonus
Darkness Control Device
Animated Servant
Revivication Device
Regeneration Device

Okay, kill two of these off an come up with a coherent and interesting concept/name.

Re: Mobile Superhero gaming

Im always a fan of 'zombie master' type baddies.
Drop Speed Bonus & tweak their power of Anim Servant so they can create one out of a corpse & u r set.
You might have their current Anim Servant be a key NPC (or even a dead Hero).
Its one thing to battle faceless zombies, but quite another thing to confront your undead Mother-In-Law!

Commander Eros
  • H. Agi A
  • H. End A
  • Speed Bonus
  • Darkness Control Device
  • Animated Servant
  • Revivication Device
  • Regeneration Device

He came to earth in a flying saucer, determined to stop the humans from building the doomsday device his people believed would destroy the universe. The devices he uses to do this include the obscuration ray (Darkness Control device), his personal medi-quick healing belt (Regeneration Device), and his Energizer Ray with multiple settings to either animate a dead body or completely revive one.

I hereby challenge anyone to identify the inspiration for this character.
Oh, and he doesn't call his animated servants 'zombies', to him they're 'ghouls'.

Re: Mobile Superhero gaming

I could see the 'zombie master' thing being interesting.

Only having one animated servant, though, does not make for much of a master, so I'd have to modify the Animated Servant to allow multiple servants to be created. The fact that they are fairly low powered, slow, and stupid makes that a fair trade-off, though.

Great ideas. Thanks for the help.

Re: Mobile Superhero gaming

I think I like that villain, and must try to roll up something similar.
I can already picture the scene:
Player1: My pseudo-mage will throw up his anti-magic screen so the zombie master can't render us sightless.
Player2: My pseudo-priest will turn the zombies so they run from us.
Gamemaster: You are both completely ineffective, the zombies aren't really undead and the zombie master doesn't use magic.

So far, so good. I've two of my three sons at home (both in schools that have shut down), and have heard the third is managing to work from home. I did begin to work from home, but was told my presence was vital so have had to drive in for the past week.

I feel your pain. Just me and my 15 year daughter.

Luckily I get out of the house as I am a social worker and work with the health department so I am still working.
