Re: Out of Character - Game related

If no one wants to be an officer, i might just make the ranking NCO commander by default.  Theres no reason a ranking NCO cant lead.

You're going to need a Driver, but the fourth character has leeway if they dont want to be an officer we can look at infantry or mechanic as alternatives and i'll just look to see who's the ranking character for the Pegs commander.

Re: Out of Character - Game related

Well, I might actually be able to be the commander... Perhaps. Although I don't think I'll get the rank unless I roll an event. Looking again at the rules, it was hinted that I was all wet with my oncept anyhow... :P

Re: Out of Character - Game related

I actually need to look at the rules closer, it was a spur of the moment decision to do this.  I've always wanted to play a ROLEPLAYING game in the battletech universe, because i thought it had alot of potential.

I've tried a few formats, most of them erode into combat.  I'm hoping to have better luck this time around.  I'm working out the bugs now.  I'll probably run 'split' threads, one combat oriented with alot of fighting, and another mostly roleplaying with not so much fighting but important for the development of the campaign.

I'm already working out the first combat scenario.

Re: Out of Character - Game related

I used to be in a long running 2nd ed version of Mechwarrior that were characters ported over from 1st ed.  While initially it was more combat since we were part of a regular house unit that was to get everyone comfortable with each other and give time to flesh out the characters.  Then when our circumstances shifted where we were in the grand scheme it became less combat operations in a mech and more covert operations spending a lot of time out of the mech and onyl when everyone was having an itch to do some classic battles did the story work its way back into scenarios where we did some more mech-works.  They became much more a tool to use than the reason for living.

Re: Out of Character - Game related

It looks like Tony rolled up an officer.  Unless someone else rolls it up he might be our commander by default.  Will look at his sheet and finalize it soon.

Blake help you all, Randal is in charge.

:P
Blake can't help you now...

But yeah, I don't have gunner at all, and I'm looking to see what you actually need to fire lasers and SRMs. Ah- Gunnery/Laser, and Gunnery/Missile, conventional. imagine that... :P

So, no gunnery, and an officer rank. However our GM wants to field those rolls... But let me know quick if I actually need to buy gunner.

Re: Out of Character - Game related

Life paths are lifepaths and the whims of fate.  You may hold off on finalizing your characters to coordinate with each other for synergy.

Re: Out of Character - Game related

I gotta look at buying skills. I can't recall if you're allowed to buy some later in creation or you need to wait with XP. I do have gunnery/Laser/Space, but I don't think there's any default synergy between similar skills in this game. It's been a while since I played.

Anyhow, I'd be happy as the commander, it's all good. :)

As for co-ordination- I'm a Marine Special Forces butt-kicker type. Planning on going into Covert Ops, but that would require a little more time than I got, although it might be doable with the extra couple of years the GM said the commander gets. I chose the other option, instead of owning a vehicle, because it just didn't seem to fit here- so I ended up wealthy even though I started impoverished. All in all, I'm really happy with the way this character turned out so far, but I still need to do some major work (like equip).

Re: Out of Character - Game related

That was some interesting event rolls...

Will get the layout to you shortly but I'm one of those nobles that had some accidents that relegated me to cavalry training rather than the cushy mechwarrior job after his right hand got mangled pretty good :)

Ending at a nice ripe age of 21.

Gregory added, and is looking to be the Driver with some mechanical skills.

I'm good with (3) Players at this time.  I will generate a NPC if we dont get a fourth player.  Will look at Tony's life path rolls today, just cleaning up lunch first.

Re: Out of Character - Game related

Dont forget, while rolling life path, that you can spend edge to add or subtract one from the roll, or to take a Re-roll.

Minimum stats are '2', so you may presume you have at least '2' edge while working through your life path.  If you feel you need more, start budgeting a higher edge.

I converted the plusses to the bonusses, so +7 = +2, +3 = +1, +1 = +0. I took one of the remainders and bought leadership, one of the laguages I think.

Re: Out of Character - Game related

You do recall all of the 'Fields' skills get 3 skill points for each skill, right? They have it sooo scattered... And everyone gets 3 points for English, 3 more for any affiliated language, and 2 for perception. Does that help find it, or is my math off (again)?

Yes.  that's the problem, i have to play guess the skill with what you put where, since you have 'end skills' but i have no clue how you got them.

Hm... with a bit of edge using, 2nd Lt. Garabaldo might become a Captain (very cool).

Waiting on Tony's comments on that though.

Re: Out of Character - Game related

I still have to look into the book. Seems you guys are quite active posters. Now lets see if i actually got the proper book.

When you guys talk bout rolling you refer to the 'rolling a character' thing right? As i fail to find some randomization rolling for chragen.

Re: Out of Character - Game related

The rolling comes into effect for the random events that happen at the end of each stage where noted.  That is the extent of the normal 'randomization'.  You still get to pick your path unless one of those events force you in a different direction.

Re: Out of Character - Game related

After youre done rolling i'm inclined to let you spend edge to change some of your life path events too, so dont feel too bad if you roll something harsh.  It's not set in stone till the characters finished off and finalized.

Re: Out of Character - Game related

Just so were clear...

You're allowed up to six years of rolls for stage 3 and 4, so... if you like youre allowed to continue on the lifepath some more, as long as your life path wraps up in six years of experience for these two stages.

This is not mandatory, but i want to be certain youre aware that youre allowed to continue rolling if you want to trade age for experience.  I happen to think it might be cool to have a captain rolled up thats only 22 years old, but he can sign up for another tour of duty if he wants to see if he can make major/colonol :P

Re: Out of Character - Game related

Wow- by spending Edg at *just* the right time in the carreer, it's possible to start as a Lt. Colonel. I don't really think that's likely to happen, I'll get something else instead, but that spending Edg to tweak your rolls works very well. Er- note you spend Edg THRESHOLD, not actual Edg because you technically don't have it yet.

Re: Out of Character - Game related

If you roll well the characters can get pretty astounding, I do agree.  Since my edge isn't going to be very massive at creation and I only have 1 year to work with (currently 21) I think I'll be burning down that edge threshold to move my event up to making that officer training which miraculously only takes 1 year ;)

Though that will end up making the poor PFC a 2nd Lt. so you being higher rank would be appropriate...

You take military academy? You can save something like 3 years, and get close to the same skills, if you go mil enlistment.
