Interest check : Earthdawn

I’m considering running an Earthdawn game here on RPOL. I know there’s lots of interest in Earthdawn, my question is how much interest in playing Earthdawn either converted to GURPS or as a freeform game? The reason I ask is that I find Earthdawn to be a bit time consuming with book-keeping and don’t have the time or mental capacity/energy to run a standard Earthdawn game. Would people be interested in an Earthdawn conversion, either direct conversion which would mean playing characters with point totals in the high hundreds, or an approximate conversion which would maintain the “feel” of Earthdawn but use the rules of GURPS. Alternatively, we could make characters using the Earthdawn system, but the game would be freeform using the character sheets as a guideline of what could/should/would be possible.

Thoughts?

Have you considered using Earthdawn: Age of Legend? It's supposedly more rules-lite and more concerned with the story telling aspect than the other editions out there. Could be the middle ground you are looking for without having to do any conversions, or run strictly freeform.

Hmmmmmmm. I hadn’t considered it. I’ll have to look into it to see. What are the major changes?

I'm afraid I haven't read through it yet, so I can't say off-hand. I was planning to use it for one-shots, or games with inexperienced players to get them into the setting before tossing additional rules at them. I know there are a number of reviews online that talk about what changed, if you don't mind a little Google-fu.

What about a 3rd edition game with a slow post rate?  1-2 GM posts a week?

I find it really hard to separate Earthdawn from its rules... I have heard good things about Age of Legend, but even the people who like it say that it does lose a lot of Earthdawn's flavor, or at least changes it.

I actually prefer slower posting rates, though, so I would totally be interested in that!

Because Earthdawn likes to be complicated in its publications, I have to ask if Revised Third would work for a reference book, since I don't have Third-Third. :D I honestly don't know what those differences are either. Go figure. I haven't used Third yet, so I'd be interested in seeing how that plays vs 1st and 2nd, which is my usual go-to. A slow post rate works well for me, actually.

Isn't there a DnD 5e version of Earthdawn? I thought I'd heard that.

I would say 4th Edition is rather smooth from what I've seen.
They've done away with most of the major hiccups like Durability and Versatility.
Also you have several ED-veterans that could smooth things out for you ruleswise.
Only thing I'm uncertain of at present is the Spellcasting system, but there's others here who can talk more on that (in fact I dare you to try and stop them)

So Ive picked up the EarthDawn fourth edition books and I like it. With the expanded timeline where the Theran war is over and Barsaive is victorious, Im considering running a game where players are war-heroes, a band of adpetsa whose actions helped win the war. It would be a slow post rate game, one or two posts per week max. Im thinking eighth circle characters...

Uh!
Never tried anything above Fourth circle.
Sounds interesting though. ^_^'

Thoughts?
Perhaps something about the internal politics (intrigues. I'm really bad at it as I can seldom remember more than two posts later) or perhaps Air Ship based. Really want to try something crew related. ^_^

I've never actually played at that level, either... at PbP speeds (not just mine!) it does sometimes seem like the only way to reach higher levels is to start there.

Two players is enough interest?

Oh you have more than two players.
Earthdawn has been rated the most undervalued RPG-game continuously and there are several dedicated players on this site.
We'll both post in either of our games and I'm sure our players will seep over.

Had to take a second to think on this. I don't have 4th, but I think I can muddle by character creation if a little help could be had until I can justify spending my tax return money on at least a core book. Because, let's face it, it's going to happen eventually anyway.

I also have a concept that I think should work well with this, so count me in. It saves me from having to run yet another ED game off-site to scratch the itch. ^_^'

Now you know why I run one on here. ^_^'
Honestly I wish I was a better GM (more precisely: I wish there wasn't a reason for me to be a GM). I guess there's only one way to improve. ^_^'

And Starchaser.
I really want you this one.
You're a great player and I think you will really like the setting once you gotten a better feel of the world.

I second this. I much prefer playing, but I have a hard time resisting converting more people to the system and the world and I find that's easier to do when I GM than trying to convince others to run systems they aren't familiar with. Once long, long ago in a decade far, far away I co-GMed an ED game here, so maybe one day I'll run one myself on the site. It could still happen. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You almost took over my game instead, too.  If you hadn't been out that week... grin  For what it's worth, I've always thought you'd be a great GM.

And Pyrate - you're already much better than you give yourself credit for.

And a little more to the point, of course I'd be happy to help out with people needing to make the jump from earlier editions.  I don't think it'd be much harder starting at 8th Circle than 1st in that regard... once we're past the first big changes, it's just going to be little stuff.

I'm glad I didn't take your game. I kind of dropped off the planet for, what, *cough* a couple years?  My players have never complained except for the extended character creation I've occasionally made them do. I built my own ADM for 2nd Ed and I still like to run with the homebrew Ads/ DisAds list, but admittedly, I need more experienced RPGers to whip those out on. If you're not careful, I might just move down the street from you, literally, and run a game. ^_^

My feel is that for the most part, it's just the character creation rules that will be a little sticky. I know descriptions of talents/ skills have likely changed,  but if it sounds like an ability I'd use, I can at least guess I can use it until someone tells me differently even if I don't know exactly how it works. ^_^'

I'm tentatively interested in trying the game out.  I've been out of Earthdawn since.. second edition or so, but I did love it at the time.  I'll have to buy the new book and see how it looks.
