IC: Spirit of the Twenty-First Century
Caught a bit of a brain-wave while walking home today. :)

Premise: This is a riff on the Young Centurions game by Evil Hat, taking place in the world of Spirit of the Century, with adventures like John Carter, Doc Savage, Indiana Jones, Flash Gordon, et cetera. However, instead of taking place during the 1910s, it would take place during the 2010s, with the players taking on the roles of young Spirit Centurions emerging in the modern day.

They'd be engaging in adventures with robot armies built by mad scientists, mysterious portals to other lands, cursed amulets buried deep beneath desert kingdoms, and even conspiracies of ninjas. All the heroes have are their moxie, their skills, and just a little blind luck.

Excerpted from the Young Centurions source book:

quote:
To put it simply, the Spirits are the good guys. Also called Spirit Centurions, they’re born at the stroke of midnight on the cusp between December 31st and January 1st at the beginning of each new century. Each Centurion represents a specific ideal that defines their era. You know those labels that historians slap in textbooks—it was an “age of progress” or an “era of technological advancement,” things like that? Those are the kinds of ideals we’re talking about. So you might have a Spirit of Progress or a Spirit of Technology. And when it comes to their ideals, Spirits truly embody them. In fact, they can accomplish amazing, almost superhuman things when it comes to their given ideal.

Around puberty, Spirits begin to manifest their abilities in earnest, although most of them don’t realize there’s anything strange going on at first. We’re not talking superpowers here—they can’t fly or shoot laser beams out of their eyes. But they have incredible luck and/or skill. For example, a Spirit of Ingenuity would be abnormally ingenious. She might be able to build a gadget to meet any need, even going so far as to invent an airplane engine in Pa’s old cow barn. As she grows into her powers, what used to be idle tinkering now results in amazing inventions. A Spirit of Optimism might be able to find his way out of the most dire situations, when all hope is apparently lost. And so on. They aren’t superhuman. They’re the people who always happen to be at the right place at the right time to stand up for what’s right. They’re at the forefront of scientific discoveries, political peace treaties, hostage rescues...any place where a hero is needed to lead the way.

I'd be taking a few cues from the Shadow of the Century, in that the previous generation of Centurions lived in a world rather more black and white, while this generation's Centurions must deal in murky greys. Though don't expect me to use the Shadow source book all that much as well. I simply enjoy that theme. :)

System: I am more interested in characters and story than in system mechanics. As such, while this game uses Fate Accelerated Edition and some tweaks from the Dresden Files Accelerated ruleset, the fiction will often triumph over mechanics. I will always go the path that makes for a better story.

Interested and have a copy of Fate Accelerated.  (I've never played, though...)

Should have asked earlier, what post rate did you want to support?

Spirit of the Century's SRD is available online for free:

Definitely interested, have seen the Spirit of the Century around but haven’t picked it up yet. Really like Fate and Dresden Accelerated though.

What general sorts of things are you imagining as specific ideals that define the 21st century?  I guess what I mean to be asking here is about the sort of tone you'll be aiming for.  A lot of people might consider a game where the Spirits are manifesting ideals like Cynicism, Outrage, and Paranoia to be a quintessentially 21st-century game, which would be a markedly different sort of endeavor from one where the defining traits are things like the Optimism and Ingenuity that you mention in your quote.

Quoted for emphasis. I've been itching to ask a similar question, I just didn't feel like I could express myself properly without sounding like an asshole.

Having read what Dream Sequence posted, I felt like I could add one thing though. Young Centurions has the benefit of hindsight. We now know what made the 20th Century awesome (by which I mostly mean Post-Punk). We can only imagine what the nature of the 21st century will ultimately be. People in 1919 probably thought they'd be done with war for a long long while after the great one. People might also disagree on what constitutes the best or even just a positive trait.

Some kind of outline for orientation might be useful here.

Re: IC: Spirit of the Twenty-First Century
I think anything could work as an ideal. The source book has things like Courage, Charisma, Truth, Technology, Ingenuity, Mystery, et cetera. You would pick something that resonates with you.

What you would avoid is picking something negative, like Cynicism, Outrage, Paranoia. Even if you believe that's what this century is characterised as, that's not what ideals are meant to be. You could make the case that the Spirit Centurions' counterparts, the Shadow Centurions, fit well with those characteristics, but certainly not the Spirit Centurions themselves.

The ideals are not meant to be prophetic, but the aspirational. The future is not written in stone, and the battle between Spirit and Shadow is played out across the century.

Thanks.  As interested as I am right now, right now I can't support that.  Very sorry to miss out on this.  I wish you every success!
