Modern AGE Slasher Horror (Adult)
So I've been thinking about Modern AGE a lot lately, and I've got a couple ideas I'm working on in the background. But since I'm on this kick, I started thinking about running something far simpler that won't require me to write 20+ pages on it (sorry for players of previous games where I did that :D) so I thought that horror could be super easy. Basically as follows:

  • PCs are governed by Gritty rules.
  • "The Killer" has Cinematic stats.
  • Other individuals are either Gritty or Pulpy depending on their role
  • Characters get experience based on how many scenes they actively engage, making the primary means of experience the "Instant" rewards discussed on pp. 153-154 of the core rules.
  • Characters get experience based on engaging 80s slasher horror tropes.
    • You might be wondering if this along with the adult tag means it's going to be about gratuitous nudity/sex, in which case the answer is "Not any more than a typical 80s horror film would be, but probably not any less either".
  • If characters survive (and escape) an encounter with The Killer, it's automatically Average XP. If they resolve it in a way where The Killer is either dead or can't pursue it's Hard XP.

Modern AGE Slasher Horror (Adult)
Seems like it could be interesting...but I worry it's a bit of a square peg round hole sort of setup. Modern AGE has characters who are assumed to be very much on the competent, heroic adventurer side, even with the gritty rules.

Modern AGE Slasher Horror (Adult)
Reply truncated since the original is no longer relevant in light of below. Suffice to say that core Modern AGE content will be almost exclusively Gritty with the killer having Cinematic stats, but also the changes noted below will be instigated to make the game much less of an adventurous romp.

Modern AGE Slasher Horror (Adult)
So Modern AGE Companion just came out and it makes a horror game a bit more viable than it was before on account of:

  • Fear and Horror
  • The Toughness Test, Injury Marks, and Vitality.
  • Hazard Effects

and so much more. The book seriously goes into enough detail that it will change the entire tone and scope of what I had originally planned for this game.

On another note, I'm also willing to discuss what specific ideas for a slasher scenario potential players would like to see played out.

Color me interested. I have played slasher-type characters before and would love to do so again.

I'm not sure if what your saying meshes well with what I'm actually putting out there, which is the fact that the players are playing the potential victims of the slasher type character, depending on how well they do. That is, they're going to be chased around by someone who's way too strong for his or her own good against whom a direct confrontation may be 'unwise' without a fair bit of investigation and/or preparation and/or luck.

So yeah, back to the party playing the potential victims. Is that of interest?

Also, I'm wondering if any particular type of killer is off limits? I think I largely want the killer to be defined by what sorts of backgrounds and professions the players pick, but I'm looking to know what I shouldn't have in a slasher killer.

I understand some people really don't like clowns
I know certain varieties of rednecks violate RPoL ToU so they're out (at least those varieties)
any opinion on those or other options things I shouldn't do?

Re: Modern AGE Slasher Horror (Adult)
I'm wondering if maybe the Toughness Test, Injury Marks, and Vitality might be too extreme, or any other ideas that might kick this game plan up a notch without sacrificing on the ideal that players won't be able to just murderhobo their way through their problems.

Also I came up with an improvement on the premise: I start the game, the group is around a camp fire, they tell stories, I use the one I like best as the game's scenario!
