IC: Urban fantasy

Hello,

I interested to run an urban fantasy game set in contemporary London.

I have three major ideas I am considering and I would love to hear some feedback and if there is an interest in any of these games:

  • Undercity professionals - based on the OCR game Esoteric Enterprises, the occult is real and the government keep it oppressed and illegal. You play a gang of criminals and misfits trying to make do in London above and below. The game will include anything from mad scientists to moody fae to ancient horrors from beyond. Player will start as small fries criminal and as they gain levels (fame and fortune as well) they will have bigger impact on the world.

  • Seekers beyond the Shroud - based on the solo game with the same name and boosted with BRP enlightened magic source book. Each seeker is driven to find more occult knowledge to better understand the supernatural events that set the seeker on the path. The game would be essentially solo game but all solo threads would happen at the same universe so there is a possibility for crossover and cooperation between players. The game would mainly focused on humans, spirits and some supernatural hybrids, magic is slow and subtle.

  • The Path of the Magi - You have just finished your apprenticeship under a wizard and begin your first steps as a independent journeyman mage. You will build your power base by learning magical lore, gaining influence in both mundane and supernatural world, by making allies and unfortunately enemies. The game would use D6xD6 system which is lite and sweet general game system. Players choose a master at the start of the game and PCs from the same master would know each other. This is a player driven game where the drive of the PC and its controlling player would shape the game. It would include magical societies, supernatural creatures and other weirdness magic is strong but is draining and monitored so not to alert the mundane.

This was the one that really raised my interest for what little that's worth. They all sound interesting but this particular prompt struck a chord with me cause I had an amazing game in that vein elsewhere. That said, for each of the proposals I'd be a bit more interested in what their world looks like if you could draw a comparison (especially since it seems the setting would be somewhat different for each setup). Are we talking a setting like World of Darkness where mystical forces seem involved in every major event in history or something like Books of Magic where the mundanest things may contain a spark of magic?

Re: IC: Urban fantasy

Good questions:

Undercity Professional is based on an OCR game called Esoteric Enterprises. It is a version of old school D&D games adapted to modern times.

Seekers beyond the Shroud is based on a Basic Role Playing system and the solo game Seeker Beyond the Shroud.

The Path of Magi I am still not  fully decided about the system, I want something lite that would have enough substance to enhance play but not restrict it and make it rigid. My initial thoughts were to use D6xD6 system which is a general system. I considered Liminals and also a version of D20.

What I would like to happen is that these game would be sandbox player driven games. The game world would be created by interaction between the players and the GM and the emphasis would be based on players interest.

I have concepts of the world in general stroke and while there would be local things at the city (and maybe national) levels I do not plan for global conspiracies and the like.

A common theme for all three games would be of discovery of the hidden world, in all three games you'd be playing people that are relative new to the hidden world and are learning it as they go.

In Undercity, the supernatural is a real thing that the government made illegal, you will play a group of fringe criminals trying to make due. There are vampires, werewolves, mad scientists and all other things weird but it is all at the city level.

In Seeker - there are few non-humans, you will play mystic, wizards and the like. Magic is a subtle force so yes most wizards grow rich and powerful and there are some magical orders but most are focused on personal growth and power accumulation and not running the world.

In Path of the Magi the world is very similar to Undercity (maybe even the same world) the the focus is on the wizards and sorcerer of the world and how they grow. Most organization are small at the city level, few are national wide but none are global. If some player would want to create a global conspiracy I wouldn't object but it would take time resources and would have many obstacles on the way.

I'm digging the Undercity Professionals. A motley crew of supernatural beings trying to make enough to pay the bills and avoid notice.

Re: IC: Urban fantasy

Esoterica is another game well suited to the sort of tone and theme you seem to be aiming for. It uses the OpenD6 rules which powered the original WEG Star Wars RPG.

I know Esterica, it was one of the games I considered for all the reasons above :)

As I see it, many RPol games suffer from players/GM attrition, a solo game even when the PCs are all in the same setting and time free the game to continue even if a player drop off. So the game carry on and can have newcomers as required with little issue.

I did it as well, you don't have to play a supernatural being, you can play a person just exposed to it, the classes have occultists, mystics, body guards and mercenary as well as spook (any supernatural being). It is as OCR system go, pretty flexible in bending toward the concept the player is interest it. There is even a section on how to play a... where the author writes her ideas how to create certain concepts (from meddling kid, to Femme Fatale to a vampire and even weirder stuff)

Re: IC: Urban fantasy

I am loving the idea of the Undercity idea and the setting also.  I think it gives you lots of scope to have fun with the tone also dependent on yours and your players mood.  You can have comedic 'nothing ever goes right' crime capers to gritty gang turf wars quite easily.

They all seem relatively interesting to be honest

Re: IC: Urban fantasy

Thank you for all the feedback,

I've started an Undercity Professionals game: link to another game

If things will go smoothly I'll follow it with Path of the Magi in a couple of months.
