Monster Collecting - Pokemon-Like game?

Hello all.

I'm considering putting together a monster collecting game with a simple D6 system to resolve attacks, set monster stats, generate shinies, etc, etc. So I'm looking for interest and input on the idea as a whole. I'm just spitballing here.

THE IDEA: I'm wanting to set a number of monsters that exist within the region, but not make all of them right out. Instead I want to use the approach that different encounters or situations will spawn different monsters, thus the more you all play and explore the area, the more the 'dex' of the region is filled out in the world.

I want to put together a region, have a deep/overarching story with cool NPCs, and allow for the players of the game to explore whatever interests them in a world where these monsters exist.

For instance; using a monster with a flame on their body to light up a hidden ruin and explore it, maybe uncovering a dark secret organization, just battling with each other or the other monsters, building a relationship with the monster(s) you have formed bonds with, potentially hunting for an ultra-rare creature with unique coloring, or one of the region legendaries, that sort of thing.

The setting I'm thinking Persona meets Pokemon in an 'alternate earth' sort of vibe. Like maybe we can focused on a city that feels a lot like Onett (Earthbound) and the monsters appear in a sort of wormhole/ultra beast/paranormal fashion around the area. Maybe there's a secret SHIELD/MIB type group that deals with the wormhole invaders or something.

I don't want to restrict the players to being a specific role, because I want really character driven story here as well as there to be some amount of freedom in how the world is explored/used. So I'm open to ideas.

Any interest?

I'd be interested. Discovering the creatures as we go could be quite interesting, and the Persona vibe sounds good.

Sounds very interesting, if very ambitious :) I'd give it a look for sure.

Seems like a good application for the Anima Beyond Fantasy Pokemon Fan-Splat (Pretty sure it was fan made)

Gritty Anime simulation game with monster catching added.

not sure if this will fit with your idea, but if you're going with a wormhole/portal from elsewhere, maybe someone or something came through said portal and mutated the natural animals of "Earth". the mutation slowly but unstoppably grows outward from each epicenter when a portal opens, which will allow for you to flesh out the dex at whatever pace you want. this will also allow you to base your current and future creatures on real world animals, giving you somewhere to begin if you need inspiration or help for monster creation and/or location.

Interesting... I'd like to check it out. Is there an english PDF version of that Anima system laying around?

Also, I really like that portal 'mutating' idea.

I've basically been breaking down a standard creature into a variety of categories that define the creature as a whole. I'm tossing around what kind of different mechanics that I can put INTO the creatures that aren't just the paper, rock, scissors of elemental stuff.

> Classification: (reptile, aquatic, mammal, insect)
> Personality: (effecting a standard dice roll)
> Stats: (determined by classification + d6 for each stat)
> Mutation: (a power that specific creature has, similar to the DnD Feat)

I want you to control your own character, but the monsters are motivated by the dice. Meaning you can plan in an encounter, but the monster might not listen to you if you roll too low. That way we can have some amount of random generation and AI within the creatures you collect, as well as a means to define each creature with a unique personality and skill set (even if they're a variation of the same species).

My biggest issue with the recent generations of Pokemon is that any creature you catch basically just amount to nothing in the long run. Plus battles could be a collaboration of the players and their specific set of monsters. Making it more tactical.

Of course there is. We live in the future after all.

Interesting but that will take a lot of work.

Sounds a bit like how Dungeon World handles henchman. When you hire a henchman, they have a Loyalty stat, and when you ask them to perform a dangerous task, you roll a Loyalty check to see if they do it, refuse, or need additional motivation to obey.

You know, humans are animals, too…

Re: Pokemon-Like game?

and as i recall, there are some human-like pokemon. ;) maybe the ability to "catch" and control the monsters is a mutation in itself.
