Monster Collecting - Pokemon-Like game?
Hello all.
I'm considering putting together a monster collecting game with a simple D6 system to resolve attacks, set monster stats, generate shinies, etc, etc. So I'm looking for interest and input on the idea as a whole. I'm just spitballing here.
THE IDEA: I'm wanting to set a number of monsters that exist within the region, but not make all of them right out. Instead I want to use the approach that different encounters or situations will spawn different monsters, thus the more you all play and explore the area, the more the 'dex' of the region is filled out in the world.
I want to put together a region, have a deep/overarching story with cool NPCs, and allow for the players of the game to explore whatever interests them in a world where these monsters exist.
For instance; using a monster with a flame on their body to light up a hidden ruin and explore it, maybe uncovering a dark secret organization, just battling with each other or the other monsters, building a relationship with the monster(s) you have formed bonds with, potentially hunting for an ultra-rare creature with unique coloring, or one of the region legendaries, that sort of thing.
The setting I'm thinking Persona meets Pokemon in an 'alternate earth' sort of vibe. Like maybe we can focused on a city that feels a lot like Onett (Earthbound) and the monsters appear in a sort of wormhole/ultra beast/paranormal fashion around the area. Maybe there's a secret SHIELD/MIB type group that deals with the wormhole invaders or something.
I don't want to restrict the players to being a specific role, because I want really character driven story here as well as there to be some amount of freedom in how the world is explored/used. So I'm open to ideas.
Any interest?
