Tom Clancy themed game?

I'm trying to gauge interest in a Tom Clancy themed game. I'm leaning more towards The Division but I would also consider Rainbow Six.

Sounds like fun! I've browsed a few systems that've attempted to hit that particular nail, but it's a tough balance. What do you have in mind?

I am 100% down for this, especially if you're going Division.

As for system, might I suggest Fate Core. I've had a similar game idea rolling around the back of my head since the release of the original Division and I've thought Fate Core would be a great way to go.

Well, that would have me out, won't do Fate.

It'd depend a lot on what you were wanting to focus on, but systems with good gunplay and a way to meaningfully support the techno-thriller gadgetiness would be best, in my opinion.

GURPS would be the way to go of you want a more "realistic" system. Just about every weapon and piece of armor is modeled down the the caliber and coverage of the plate carriers.

But it's also very lethal. If you are looking for a game where a small team can go out and elminate dozens of armed opponents by themselves it probably would not work well.

If you are looking to include disease however, and fighting under the strain of PPE. Or of you are looking to include infiltration elements or recon missions it would work very well I think.

Just do not be surprised if the good guys take some significant casualties along the way. And hope that someone rolls a paramedic...

The Action series for 4th edition helps with that significantly, in my admittedly limited experience. GURPS would be my recommendation as well, it's on the crunchy side, which I consider a plus - "the shooty guy" is about as specific as some systems get on the abilities of Tom Clancy protagonists.

For something a bit lighter, Savage Worlds has a licensed product called Ghost Ops (which also has a standalone RPG) that does a serviceable job. Not as many options as a proper gun nut would like, but not a terrible choice, especially for that more "action movie" feel.

Clancy is awesome. Love GURPS, too. I would join a GURPS Clancy game. GURPS isn't so lethal if you don't play crazy. Generally I find Clancy's characters try to survive rather than doing things like Schwartzenegger in Commando.

I'm glad to see a decent amount of people are interested in this. I've never played any of the systems you guys have suggested and I know I'm probably gonna lose most of you here, but I ran a short Division campaign a couple years back irl, using a simple homebrew d6 system. Agents were generally more action hero like but gunplay got lethal quick if they weren't careful so team work was important. I was kinda planning on relaunching that game for those interested in trying it out and playing as First Wave Agents. I would use Roll20 though.

How would you be integrating Roll20 and RPoL?

Re: Tom Clancy themed game?

I've only ever been involved in free form games here on Rpol so I was honestly planning on using it mostly as a rulebook for the homebrew rules and was gonna use Roll20 for a majority of the game, including battle maps. I know Roll20 has an integrated chat feature but I've always just used Discord for voice chat for online games.

Re: Tom Clancy themed game?

I think you are making this harder on yourself by using roll20. Don't get me wrong, I've been a member of roll20 since it was established, but in this instance I don't think you need it.

The rules can be written out and stored for everyone to see and browse using the Game Wiki that will be created when you make the game. As for battle maps, you could simply use a gridded image with coordinates to show the battle map.

If you still want to use Roll20 and Discord... I'm out. I'm here looking for Play by post games because I don't have the time right now to devote a couple hours to sit down on roll20 and discord with my gaming group, let alone commit to a pbp/discord hybrid game I would have to check in with ALL day long.

Re: Tom Clancy themed game?

If the majority of your game will be run at Roll20 then, per the rules of this forum, no further discussion can take place here.
