Interest Check: Marvel Super Heroes

I have the Ultimate Powers Book, Campaign Book, and Nightmares of Futures Past.  PDF's are available for other rulebooks online, as it's out of print so fairly accessible to download.  I've been working on a game set on Mojoworld that involves the X-Men attempting to rescue some new students who were abducted by Mojo's bounty hunters.  The players will play one female character, one optional male character, and one NPC.  The first scene will take place on Mojoworld, where at least one character by each player will start, and the second scene will take place at Xavier's Academy where at least one other character by each player will start.  If they opted for a third character, that can be at either.  In the third scene some of the characters at Xavier's will be abducted and taken to Mojoworld.  In the fourth scene the remaining members will try to figure out how to rescue those who were captured.  The fifth scene will be back on Mojoworld where a gladiatorial program will occur.  Scenes will bounce back and forth like that.  NPC's can be pre-existing Marvel characters, or villains, or original characters.

Other than just mapping out my own original content, I was thinking about using some of the source material's resources for campaign building, and I could use help with that if anyone is familiar with the Marvel Super Heroes game.

I'm also thinking about whether to have any house rules or homebrewn rules.  I like the idea of hit location damage charts and injury penalties, for example.

I'm not very experienced with the Marvel Super Heroes system though, other than mostly just messing around with the Ultimate Powers Book, which is super fun.  Anyway, I'm planning stuff and writing material to hopefully make this a more thorough game.  I've been doing a lot of impulsive games that don't take off.  I want to do a proper game that's well-planned.

The game will be Adult, so it may contain gore and sex.

Is anyone interested, and if so, do you have experience with the system?

A really fun system, I really encourage people to use it and learn from its mistakes. It's an old system that was written by only two people in the beginning, so there are lots of inconsistencies and typos, and a weird kind of evolution over the decades as people have gotten their hands on it. I'd love to make a character and play, but I'm already running one game in this system currently so I wouldn't have the ability to do much more than play, but I certainly might be able to help you figure out some things.

I use the ultimate powers book in other game systems but really have never found anyone to play in the marvel verse with. This is litterally the first time I have seen anyone willing to run a marvel game. Though I am not much for the concept I am intrued enough to lurk in it if you get it running.

I'm thinking of just having the players play one character, of any gender they want, as a new student at Xavier's Academy.  And rewarding bonus XP for NPC's used as plot hooks.

I still don't know a lot about the Marvel system, like how it handles combat.  I could try homebrewing some stuff.

May I ask ShadoPrism why you're, "not much for the concept" of using it in the Marvel verse?  I'm genuinely curious.  Is it the Marvel universe itself you're not fond of, or is it something to do with the game system itself?

Edit: I don't mind if you lurk.

I play in spectre's game and have found the system an unexpected source for creativity. I could potentially be interested. I'm not up for more than one PC, though, and my Marvel lore is basic :-)

No problem, but if you want you can read comics online for free.

https://readcomiconline.to/

I read the New Mutants (2003), and while it gives a pretty good sense of what it's like to be a student at Xavier's, it's not well written, and the artwork is terrible.  I'm going through the 2009 ones now, and they're a lot better.

X-Men comics have gotten kinda strange in recent years, and I can't really keep up with things.  It's all convoluted with time travel and stuff.  The Marvel universe can be really sloppy, not only because there are so many titles with different authors pulling in different directions who can't keep up with all the lore, but also because so much of it is pumped out very lazily by mediocre talent.

Edit: I'm also not the biggest fan of D20.  It's fine, but I prefer 2D6.  It gives a nice even spread of percentages and means that you're more likely to roll an average score than a high or low one, which I think just makes sense.

I don't think my version of the Mojoverse will resemble the comics too much.  It's more about certain core philosophies and concepts that really captivate me.  There's a lot of goofy stuff that I don't like, that's not going to be there.  Mojo and Spiral will be more evil, more psychotic, murderous, and sadistic.  I really can't stand Major and Minor Domo from the comics, so they won't be there at all.  And I also didn't like the way he ran a lot of his programs in the shows and comics.  They were pretty cheesy most of the time, and lacked creativity.  I have set up some elaborate gladiatorial arenas, death traps, and monsters, as well as a grim dungeon for those who try to rebel or refuse to participate.  It will be gory.  My goal is to take all the best elements of the Mojoverse, focus on those, weed out all the stupid elements, and make it more awesome and realistic.

It's something I've been dreaming up for a long time.

I really can't stand to read most of the comics he's in, but it's the lore I find fascinating.

I still think it's promising. Making it less farcical will make for more interesting characters.

I'd like to take a more realistic approach to the Marvel universe.  It always bothered me how in the comics they're always in such dangerous situations, yet people rarely die.  And they have a sort of catch and release approach to dealing with villains.  Like, they beat him up, he teleports away, and they all go home happy like they just finished a picnic, and of course you know the villain is just going to come back later and kidnap them all over again.
