IC- Vampire the Dark Ages game set in alternate Venice
It's been a long time since I ran a game on rpol, but I was considering starting a Vampire game set in a Venice of my own design.  It would involve the Giovanni, but not be about the actual Giovanni story of the canon World of Darkness.  It would likely fall into a Mature category, unless Adult is needed for the more macabre aspects of the Cappadocians and Tremere.

The game would involve the players investigating unusual occult activity in the city, and uncovering centuries old rivalries that are coming to a head.  The game would be more focused on the mystery and intrigue than open combat, and would focus more on an ongoing story than being a sandbox game (the only sandbox-like aspects would be allowing players to control territory, and do what they choose with it).

My questions are how much interest there would be in such a game, whether there would be any preference in terms of Mature or Adult, and if people are ok with the 20th anniversary edition of dark ages, or if another would be preferred.

I find that the Darkness part of the world of darkness tends to require the Adult setting even if you don't focus on it.

The 20th anniversary edition is the best set of rules they have, so if you don't plan to use any pre existing setting you may as well use the better system.

Perhaps the most important answer to interest is how far above the starting XP value you plan to run the game.  A bunch of neonates bouncing around randomly to solve small scale riddles has been done a lot, but the higher tiers of play are almost entirely ignored and thus still hold more interest.

I'll agree the 20th Anniversary rules are the best option. I disagree that WOD needs the Adult setting, as the graphic details don't need to be described. Which is for the large part the difference between Adult and Mature. A fun and enjoyable game can be had without having to delve into graphic details for things. But that's my 2 cents. And for some reason if you open up the Adult Aspect people tend to and want to move into ERP, I've seen it in too many PBP type games (mainly discord).

quote:
Games on RPoL may be rated either Adult or Mature to signal that they are not suitable for all site users.

Mature games are games which have (as some minor portion of them) mature themes, strong language, drug use, and/or extensive violence.  Mature games use the Mature Content flag to warn potential readers that some of the game material may be considered offensive.  Despite this flag, Mature Games must remain suitable to all ages.

Adult games are games which have as part of their content graphic sex or graphic and gratuitous violence.  Though their story and plot may be very strong and elaborate, they detail sex and/or gore in a way to which children and teens should not be exposed.  Adult games are restricted in access to those who have specifically requested access to Adult games and provided consistent truthful age statements for each adult game.  In no case are Adult materials permitted in any public area of RPoL: GMs of Adult games must take care that only those users who are members of their game can view the Adult materials contained therein.

The difference between a Mature game and an Adult game is the descriptive level and the amount of mature content in the game.  Games which focus exclusively on mature content for their plot or which describe such content in graphic detail are required to display the Adult rating.

Your game though do what makes you feel comfortable in reading/describing things. 20th DA is a great setting better then the V20 version imho, though based on similar rules there are differences. And I love Tremere (& Lasombra) so if you do run a game I may be interested.

I will likely use the mature setting, but it's still a consideration.

I am pretty sure there's just one Vampire the Dark Ages 20th Anniversary, as opposed to V20 versus DA20.  Maybe I am not familiar with them, but the 2015 Vampire the dark ages 20th anniversary was what I am most likely to use.

I am fine with starting players in the ancillae level of ability, with some limitations.  I don't enjoy players who jump to things like level 5 Koldunic sorcery and try to turn the game into D&D.  So players being more capable than a fledgling is fine, as long as the game is more of a mystery and less of a mystic arms race.

If you do want to put any absolute limits on character creation above and beyond those applied naturally by the XP systems limitations then you will want to have that VERY clear, and probably visible before acceptance of the RTJ, to avoid confusion.

V20 is the modern book DA20 is the dark ages one printed a few years later with mostly the same system, just a few fixes and additional features.

Yeah DA20 and V20 both are similiar systems (both being the 20th anniversary version) one for the Dark Ages and one for Modern Times,  but there are some differences. That is all I meant. I do prefer the DA20 version of some of the rules, mainly with how Multi-action is handled and celerity. But there are some other differences as well.

Yes, I will spell out very clearly what is allowed and not allowed in the character creation thread.  I don't mind higher power vampires in games, in fact I prefer games where there is a very clear power difference between vampires and humans, but I just want to avoid players who try to start with all their points poured into 1 path of Koldunic sorcery, and wonder why it is a bad idea to give a brand new player the ability to flood Venice.

in my experience, I also usually have to limit certain backgrounds and traits as well, or people enter the game expecting to have ghouled the Doge or Archbishop, or have the entire Venetian navy at their beck and call.

I would RTJ for such a game.  A Mature or Adult rating would be fine... and either  V20 or the 2015 Dark Ages edition is acceptable.

Agreed.  Definite interest and I also rather like the DAV 20th edition.

I have laid out the groundwork for the game, so if you're interested take a look.
