Alright the art of summoning has always fascinated me. Each system deals with it differently. More often than not it is by bringing created creatures to you(D&D and Final Fantasy espers) or far less frequently they are drawn from the summoners soul itself and bond with the being doing the "summoning".
So my thought is this. An original system loosely based on a few different systems. Taking a little from each to make a cohesive whole that should function.

The summoning itself will be split between the two thought processes. But leveling it will be more of a process. Basically your version fights others and gains abilities and points to evolve based on defeating more or less wild summons.

Bare bones of the idea guys but what do you think?

What kind of flavor do you want? Are the summons aspects of character personality, or tools to get things done? Are summons permanent, unique investiture of power, making their loss bitter and crippling - or are summons hordes of expendable creatures?

In reply to Morty (msg # 2):

It all comes down to the summoner themselves. Some will likely see them as unique and take a loss at great personal cost akin to loosing a family member. Others they will see them as a means to an end and nothing more.

Still building the overarching world. Setting it on Earth for now to see what spins out from the process. Easily flipped to a new "world" later

Ron Edwards Sorcerer deals exactly with that, you might want to explore the core rule and supplements.

Never heard of it. Looking into it. So far it isn't exactly what I had in mind, but it remains to be seen.
