Once more into the Breach

I am feeling an itch to do some GMing once more and unsure of which direction to go. Recently I have wanted to try a few old settings with new systems, in particular Exalted 3rd edition and Legend of the Five Rings 5th edition.

For Exalted I have the idea of doing either a small group of Solars and really exploring their ability to change the world around them. I am also interested in trying for a group of Dragon Blooded engaged in the Wyld Hunt. I am back and forth on which one might be best to explore.

For Legend of the Five Rings, I am more a fan of doing Game of Thrones style with politics and maneuvering. Characters would be aiming to secure and expand their position not only for themselves but for their families and children.

Both, I fear, will require much trial and error as we learn the system together and apply it to a play by post setup in a way that works best.

The L5R prospect sounds like a whole lot of fun, but I have personally had terrible luck with those games getting very far.

Just off the top of my head, if you were to focus on an individual province, where everything is scaled down to a more individual scope, perhaps that would see more success?

For example, court characters tend to dominate in a large palace setting, where as martial characters have nothing to do thanks to a large standing garrison.

Vice versa in an overland campaign.

If there is no lavish court, and there is no huge standing garrison, every character can kind of make it their own. A monk might found a small shrine, a young warrior might try to win the hand of the local Magistrates daughter instead of a Princess, etc.

I do really like the multigenerational aspect. On the off chance the game does last a long time with a quality cast of characters, I think that would be a great cool angle!

I'd love to play in an Exalted 3e game. I have a little bit of experience, but the game didn't get very far

I think the Solars idea would be more helpful for learning the system, though they both sound like fun!

I have a little experience with Exalted and none with L5R, so I would favor the Exalted idea. The setting is pretty interesting but we didn't play long enough to become more than familiar with how it works.

So seems there is interest fo a Solar, Exalted game. So I will try to start a board up for this one and get some input so we can push forward.

L5R wise I still want to run a game. So are you thinking all the characters in basically pushing for power in one province?

Thinking and acting on the scale of a province seems like a good start as well as making it easier to get a handle on as things get going.
