2nd, or 5th with spheres?

A friend and I are slowly putting together a  very much beloved concept for a created fantasy world  that had many years been run via table-top and  bringing it here.  Initially it was run via  3.5 D&D mechanics, heavily modified, but eventually got altered to second edition.   We had to alter some of those mechanics, but not as much for a host of reasons. I won’t go into all the details, as they are many and somewhat personal as why this happened.       I won’t go into the world yet, or anything like that, because it’s not entirely important to my question.

Now, we are at the point where we are trying to decide if we should run the world using second edition, somewhat altered, or run it with  fifth edition D&D with the Sphere’s system from Drop Dead Studios.

What I want to know is this: How many of you would generally prefer second edition over fifth with the spheres, or the other way around, and how many of you don’t really care?

We aren’t at the point where we can ask for any help because I think we might need another DM for assistance, so I didn’t want to post it in the GM wanted forum.

Speaking for myself--I'm much more a fan of 2nd ed (I have had a number of false starts with 5e, not really a fan, though I'd consider it for the right game).

The question would be whether you're bringing players here, too; as getting players for older edition games (1st and 2nd) is probably a bit more difficult than the newer (5e).

Feel free to send me rMail if you wanted to get into more gritty detail.

I use my own simple system for  my games.. it involves abilities  and Sphere, that the players  can build on as they go...it has worked  very well all these years.

Ski-Bird's two copper pieces ...

I'll say this right up front ... there really isn't a wrong answer to the question of which edition to use, or which other rulesets (homebrewed or otherwise) to bolt on to an existing edition.  If you have a ruleset that works ... and find some players willing to give it a go ... then you are off to the races.

It has been my experience though — when playing these sorts of games with people that I do not know in real life — that the game itself benefits when the rules get altered from the baseline as little as possible.

I, like MelJill, prefer 2nd edition.

Of the two options, however, without knowing even the first thing about the setting I would prefer a 'let's use 5th edition but let's also bolt on the the following' as opposed to 'let's play using 2nd edition ... but I have altered the mechanics.'
