As far as I've observed, few people play games purely for the system, and if they do it's more likely they're in love with something obscure rather than the megabrand of eurofantasy.
At any rate, I don't go here, but a) I've always had the impression any D&D game fills up fast here and b) I run "unpopular" niche games and have landed everything not actively sabotaged, so I think I can safely say build it and they will come. You just have to tell them what you mean to build.
Of course, there may be tagging issues at work, too: now and then I see something that's managed to get to advertise without a game tag and it's usually some species of D&D in the title. They may be able to assume it's so popular the game will fill before anyone searches for it.

Searching without the requirement that the games are actively seeking players seems to produce considerably more results, by my count around forty 5e games with posts within the last 24 hours.

D&D's fanbase is seriously edition-fractured, so there's fewer open games for each edition (and 5e is a popular edition - heaven help you if you want to play a 4e game, for example).

Right? I'm thinking 2 games is insanely popular, and here comes Vinny with "only 13 games". *sigh*

13 games is 0.2% of the 5959 active games on this site.

Still, not going to say it's an unloved system.

Yes, my initial search only specified games looking for players. My bad.

If you have a rogues gallery of characters ready to go at a moment's notice you are more likely to get invited. It's not unusual for DND games for popular editions to be full under 24 hours of an add getting posted. If longer, it's usually because the DM has chosen to take his time selecting.

How do you get internet under that rock where you apparently live? The whole OGL controversy... it's like literally the only gaming news for the last like month?

I'm well aware of the OGL controversy. It's like literally the only gaming news for the last like month.
I just didn't know what you meant by, "massed exodus from the system for political reasons," because that could refer to any number of things. Like literally.

But it's a very nice rock, all mossy and warm. Seriously, though, I suspect that it's a case of trying to do too much with too little.

I myself thought "political reasons" wasn't a great way to describe that when "legal" or possibly "financial" were a much better fit.

Not really. From a player side there isn't actually that much reason to be upset. You very much were not going to be affected by it directly.
So it becomes a social responsibility thing. Which is political.

I'm personally never going to be personally affected by it in any circumstances
quote: | So it becomes a social responsibility thing. Which is political. |
I don't buy that logic, and I've seen several breakdowns that suggest that if I were a player there are legal ramifications behind what licenses they provide and the fact that they could just remove something granted in perpetuity. So even though I will personally never be affected by it in any way, some people could in legal terms. Not just the people who make over whatever magical amount they decide on, although those people are definitely more affected and the masses will most likely only be affected in very minor ways unless they start getting the shaft through D&D Beyond which I'm given to understand has different legal terms, and thus different legal ramifications.
