Gurps Space

Every few years I take a stab at running a Gurps Colonization game. I've run it at TL 10 a couple times, TL 11 once, and I'm thinking of having another go at TL 12.

"Realistic" tech, so no support from home, which is at least a century away.

Is there any interest? I haven't seen many Gurps games lately, and none using Ultra Tech, so I'm not sure anyone is into it currently.

I'd be interested. I vaguely remember I may have the GURPS Space book somewhere, but I'd have to find it. Recently joined another GURPS game and was refereed to https://gurpscharactersheet.com/ which can be used to create characters without needing any of the books.

I think the concept could have a lot of potential with the right group.

Are you thinking more colonial themed survival? Where just hanging on and becoming more resource secure is the primary theme?

Or a less granular story with more political factionalism? Social elements, etc?

And would you be running it in 4th edition?

How granular are you thinking? I could go for either a hands-in-the-dirt sort of thing or something like the old GURPS Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri deal, but they're two different experiences.

I had the exact same comparison in mind Smoot.

Great game. Amazing voice acting.

Well, it would be 4th edition. A System wide lottery picking amongst billions of applicants in the 18-20 age group to fill 30,000 slots (3 ships, 3 destinations).

The game would start with your notice of selection, then your trip from where ever to the Saturn where the Colonization training satellite and colony ships are, then 1 year of training, including a choice of specialties.

That won't take but a week or two, most likely. After that, the trip and landing. Then what happens depends in part on what the players chose for specialty training. Dirt grubbing can be done in the background if they opt for exploring the new world and aiding in beating back the local  (poisonous) life so more compatible one can be started. Or they can be farmers defending a farm, although that has a limit, as the border between eco systems advances.

There may or may not be intelligent alien life. The atmosphere may or may not have trace gases that cause a problem. Air density issues may limit choice of landing site. I won't be rolling up the new system until training is over, and it's too late for the results to color my responses.

So it's a bit open ended as to what COULD happen, but, mostly, it will be exploration, eco terrorism (destroying the old ecosystem locally to make room for a new one) and prospecting (even nano facs need the right raw materials)

Players will start underexperienced on purpose, but not incompetent.

I prefer to update Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, with the weekends off. I will answer more often, but 2-3 posts a week from players lets me know they are still around.
