He's not really wrong, Rifts is utter nonsense. Wonderful, entertaining nonsense but no-one at Palladium has any grasp of world building that extends beyond rule of cool. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I tend to just figure that we rub more nonsense on it - industrial nanotech in vats, taking apart old ruined cities, the coming of Rifts brought resources to the area, secret offworld robot mines through stable rifts they don't like to admit to... Whatever is the most fun for the game you're running.

Oh, and yeah... There's a bunch of crusty old Rifts gamers around here who'll dig out wildly inappropriate pet characters at the least hint of a story - be warned of that going in, but if you're ready for it it can be a blast. ^_^

I'll allow characters a few levels,  but well thought out back stories will go along way.

What would be the most interesting classic Rifts or Chaos Earth?

Classic Rifts as a rule, because it's more gonzo, although with that said, a clear focus on the sort of character you want would not be a bad idea.

Classic Rifts would be my vote too, and non-Coalition.

Yeah, Coalition games are fun in concept but I've rarely seen one go well. Rifts players tend to be violently allergic to the chain of command. ^_^

I'm trying to see where the interest is, then I can better see how to work the game to the interests, and work out what occ/rcc/pcc I can or will not allow.

This right here. I'm all for it.

(and all the PB critics can give this game a miss to show their dislike eh. using the word "unplayable" for a game that I have had a 14 year long campaign of is silly.)

Been a while, but I'll almost always show up for Rifts. Just don't let a bunch of mutant animals in. I do not want to be an evolved French poodle, plus I'm terrible with accents.

I would love to be a part of a proper Rifts game that hasn't been houseruled to death to try and compensate for perceived flaws in the game. Rifts is Rifts. Also agree with non-Coalition, thanks.

Oh you'll get a bunch of RTJs as soon as you advertise a game, don't you worry. =)

Yeah, I'd have to second this; and I expect that your biggest problem is going to figure out which characters best fit your campaign idea.

You (the GM) is really going to have to be specific on what you'll allow and where you'll be...Rifts in particular is guilty of power-creep.

This is not the venue for the discussion you want to have. You need to go start your own thread somewhere else and leave this one alone.

I suspect that the word 'perceived' was what sparked it. They're right, Rifts is a brutally flawed, cack-handed mishmash of three different systems in a trenchcoat. I love it to bits, but I'm by no means blind to its faults - which are a definite part of its charm.

That said, it is a game with a high barrier of access to the GM because even more so than games like Pathfinder, you need to keep a clear idea of what sort of characters you want when running applications. I have had a blast playing everything from psychic worms hiding in a robot dog to 'just a dude' and hatchling dragon arms dealers, but I've also seen games horribly derailed by That One Guy who got away with something in character generation.

Of course, some of those games were also made by That One Guy... I remember a fantastic AtB game in which one of the party was profoundly delusional, and I mean the player. Everything revolved around them and they always won everything they did, but they were the only one who thought or posted that (reliably, every time they posted). I think they also had a big-titty catgirl girlfriend that only they could see... Ohhhh, good times.

Folks this thread is not for this debate, I'm looking for intrest and what that interest is. I have enough interest so I'll work on a game thread over the next couple of days.  I'll post here a link for the game so it can be found.  I agree there will have to be discussion as to what will be permitted. I will likely open a limited thread and access so we can have the discussion.  I can say to start that evil characters will not work, the far side of self centered will not work as well.  I also do not want an all magic party half or less of the party should be magic or psi.  There are many options occ/rcc/ppc some excellent, some possible, some aborent. That can be worked out as we go.

Interest in a Palladium Rifts game

I haven't played Rifts (only Savage Rifts), so I know a bit about the setting.

I do read rules fast, however.

I don't mind wanting to play by the book, but I do have one request- please tell us which books first.
I just had a recent experience joining a RuneQuest game, reading through the 4e edition book and making a character only to find out afterwards that the GM wanted 2e so I had to read again and reroll a character (and, because random chargen, get a different concept). So, I'd like to avoid that miscommunication again!

Welcome,  if you do not have familiarity with classic Rifts, I will never encourage the expense of buying into a game system for online games.  There are dozens of books for the game.  If you want to see the difference between Savage Worlds and classic Rifts.  Then simply the core book and source book1.  I saw a video the other day that said the difference simply, if you want simple playable characters use savage, if you want an expansive world classic.  Rifts is not perfect there is power creep, some of the world books are terrible, like South America 1 and 2.  But again don't buy in just for an online game, only buy in if you will play with friends or you like the story.

Thank you for answering! It's ok, it's been on my reading list for a while, so I wouldn't mind giving it a shot after all. And I do love the setting so it'd be cool to have it just for that (I mean if I don't bother with any game because the rules aren't what I'm looking for, I'd play almost nothing XD)

I've opened a game thread,  so far just the intro, rtj info, and the character discussion thread. I'll build from there I anticipate a extended process for the characters, I've also added some general maps, and a character sheet that might work.
The link is:  link to another game.
Hope to see anyone interested there.
