Fast-Paced GURPS Dungeon Fantasy Hack 'N Slash?

Haven't been on RPoL for a number of years, but somewhat recently I became interested in GURPS Fourth Edition's Dungeon Fantasy series. I'm 32 now and have game mastered GURPS since I was in the eighth grade. In the last few years, all of my players have moved away, or I have moved away from them. Without a game group, I find myself without an outlet to test my Dungeon Fantasy creations.

I'm currently game mastering one Dungeon Fantasy game on another site. Here is the most current map for it: http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/2294/gorefest6.jpg

While I have five good players, we've been playing for a month come tomorrow and are still in the first room. I'd like to move a little faster than that. About twice as fast, actually.

I'd like players to be able to make at least brief posts maybe two or three periods a day. For example, I try to check my games before going to work, while at lunch, and a few times in the evening. Usually, at any of those times, I'll be able to post if needed even if it's just a quick Dodge roll or something. If I can't post for a day or so, I let everyone know.

All that said, are there enough fourth edition GURPS players on RPoL to even expect to be able to fill a Dungeon Fantasy game right now, let alone a fast-paced one?

The game would only use the Basic Set, Magic, and DF 1-3 with templates followed to the letter. DF8 could be used for equipment. Other sources, including Pyramid or other DF or GURPS books such as Low-Tech or Martial Arts would not be permitted.

Any interest?

Re: Fast-Paced GURPS Dungeon Fantasy Hack 'N Slash?

There are enough people here who know GURPS, but you'd be hard pressed to find many people who can honestly commit to posting 2-3 times per day. If you require people to post at least once in a 24 hour period during combat, that's pretty fair, and I would be able to do that on a regular basis. Knowing the way my life is, though, 2-3 times per day is never going to happen consistently, especially when making, formatting, and posting rolls from my phone (which I would have to do to keep up with that rate).

Re: Fast-Paced GURPS Dungeon Fantasy Hack 'N Slash?

I hear you. I'll note that once did play in a game here that put that posting rate to shame. We're talking more than a dozen posts a day from everyone consistently.

I have a DF Web site that I'd like to open this month, but not without testing a lot of the stuff first. Well, if a dungeon floor has 12 rooms, it won't get fully tested for a year at my current rate (but boy, is it getting well tested).

That's not to say I don't love play-by-post games. I really do. I've been here since, like, 2004, just not in the last three years, and Play by Web before that back to 2002, and before that, IRC back to the mid-90's. They just seem to be a little better for games that center on heavy role playing than faced-paced hack-and-slash dungeon crawls.

I dunno.

Re: Fast-Paced GURPS Dungeon Fantasy Hack 'N Slash?

PBP works for hack-and-slash just fine, but it won't be fast-paced by any stretch of the imagination.

Even the fastest paced play-by-posts with the most committed players and GM went about 1 post by everyone a day, 2 on occasion. It's just not the norm. Many people who do play-by-post games do so because they don't have time to sit down for four hours once a week.

Another alternative is splitting the dungeon up by levels and testing each one individually. You may have to give each group different starting points to compensate for how far they are through the dungeon (assuming you're awarding character points after each combat). It might work. I dunno. :)

Re: Fast-Paced GURPS Dungeon Fantasy Hack 'N Slash?

Well, I may start a dungeon... But I may not. I've already got one going...

I may start an outdoor dungeon actually, with ranged and flying combat being big aspects. For example, a forest map at the edge of a mountain or something, or maybe around a solitary ruined tower.

We'll see.

Clt, if you want me to rMail you if I start one, or anyone else, I will.

I wouldn't be able to do a real time game, but if you end up doing a dungeon on here, let me know. =] Best of luck to you.

Re: Fast-Paced GURPS Dungeon Fantasy Hack 'N Slash?

A year for a good dungeon crawl sounds about right in play by post, maybe nine months.  I'm playing in a GURPS fantasy game that has a good deal of dungeon exploring, and the pace can be slow at times.  I could give you a post a day during the week, maybe two if I don't have a lot going on, but  my schedule can be busy at times, and it's not always possible on the weekends.

But I'd love to play in a good DF dungeon crawl, and there are plenty of DF fans on RPOL to give it a shot.

Re: Fast-Paced GURPS Dungeon Fantasy Hack 'N Slash?

I might be able to keep up with that pace during the week.  Weekends and Wednesdays are usually slower for me though because those times are when I play in face-to-face games.  All things considered, I could probably pull off 2 posts per day during the week, but my rate would be slower during most weekends.

I'm on Eastern Standard Time.

In reply to Stripe (msg # 1):

I can post from lunch at work too.  I just might be able to keep up if this gets going.

So if it does happen - count me tentatively in.

Re: Fast-Paced GURPS Dungeon Fantasy Hack 'N Slash?

Well, this idea has certainly received some interest both here and in rM.

Right now, it looks like I have two, maybe three players whom I know who have expressed interest.

I've also received a lot interest for a slower-paced game with a minimum of one post per 24-hour period. Of course, there is leniency there. Everyone misses a day and takes a day off here and there.

I can only run two games, I think. So we'll have to see how things go.

For me, it'd just be nice to see a DF game go somewhere.  I've joined a few only to have them quickly die out.

Re: Fast-Paced GURPS Dungeon Fantasy Hack 'N Slash?

OK I have a question.  I have yet to participate in a PbP game lastsd long so forgive my naivete.  Is it at all unreasonable to coordinate when everyone is online from time to time, say a period of 2 or 3 hours once a week?  That way, we would have a time when everyone could respond to situations promptly and get the action moving along.  Posts could be made outside of this time, of course, to progress the broader story, but the meat would take place during this time when everyone would agree to be online.  Kind of like being together at a table with character sheets and dice.  If there is a good reason this could never work please let me know.

Re: Fast-Paced GURPS Dungeon Fantasy Hack 'N Slash?

It can be done, yes, and I've participated in games where, informally, anyway, everyone was online at once, and we had an avalanche of posts.  That's not something that I can usually do these days, but it is possible.

Re: Fast-Paced GURPS Dungeon Fantasy Hack 'N Slash?

If you can manage to coordinate times with everyone, more power to you. Cross-posting may be an issue if everyone is online at once, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem in combat.
