Fantasy Age-of-Sail Colonization

The players are explorers from a civilized and relatively stable fantasy empire looking for opportunity or escape in a newly discovered continent across the sea. They'll be exploring uncharted territory and, ultimately, be responsible for the survival of a colony settlement far from home.

Themes:

  • High-level community management and development of the PCs settlement. They are responsible for its prosperity or ruin.
  •      Isolation. There may be other cultures in the New World, but the players are the only ones from their native civilization. And when the Old World does come into play, it’s seldom helpful.
  •      Self-sufficiency. As such, they cannot rely on resources from outside sources.
  •      Exploration. There’s a lot to discover.

I'm not looking to add magic and elves to the discovery and development of the Americas; the New World in this campaign is going to be something the players won't be expecting, exactly.

System: I'd like to run this in Dungeons and Dragons 5e or GURPS. Very different systems, resulting in very different games. If you're interested in playing, let me know which system you'd prefer.

Fantasy Age-of-Sail Colonization

This sounds pretty cool. I'd be interested if it's 5th ed.

Fantasy Age-of-Sail Colonization

Sounds fun! I like GURPS, but won't be opposed to 5e.

Fantasy Age-of-Sail Colonization

I thought it was an ad for a Fantasy AGE game. Eh.

Re: Fantasy Age-of-Sail Colonization

That seems interesting, and neither system is one I have experience in.

Re: Fantasy Age-of-Sail Colonization

I'm willing to work with players new to whatever system, no problem.

Re: Fantasy Age-of-Sail Colonization

This seems like a lot of fun. I would have to vote for DnD 5e because I've never played gurps

Re: Fantasy Age-of-Sail Colonization

Rough draft of the intro:

Every new year the Imperial Scryer casts a fortune for the coming seasons. It's a fun game that nobody takes too seriously, as the fortunes often don't come true, or they come true in ways that make sense only after the fact. Last year the Scryer spoke of a great dragon that would arise in the south; in March the Southwick Drakes prevailed to win their regional calcio tournaments.

This year the Scryer spoke of a land of wonder far to the west, a trove of forgotten lore that would enrich or destroy the house of Schirmherr. Many found the tale amusing, as Count Schirmherr is not very well loved outside his lands, and assumed they were talking about the isle of Brae, which periodically submerges and reappears depending on the tides. Many jokes were made about the Count wrecking his ship on its shores, but nobody took it very seriously.

Except the Count, that is. At great personal expense he commissioned a magical divination and discovered that there is an as yet undiscovered land far, far to the West, across the Great Sea. He has further commissioned an expedition to find this new land and see what treasures it might hold.

So there's the basic plot for you. Players will be the people sent to find this new land at the Count's behest. Sailors, minor nobles, condemned criminals, wanna-be explorers, military veterans coming out of retirement... anyone looking for opportunity far from an Empire with little social mobility.

How exactly that pans out depends on the system we run it in, of course.

Re: Fantasy Age-of-Sail Colonization

It has been a long time, over a decade, since I played D&D.  I have access to the 5e Players handbook but have only flipped through it.  This sounds like a fun opportunity to dive into.

Re: Fantasy Age-of-Sail Colonization

So far DnD 5e seems to be the most popular, so unless we get a ton of people wanting to play this in GURPS that's what I'll develop the game for.
