Re: Chapter 1: Giant-Sized Problems

Zassil shook his head at the bodies and the piles of loot. The Ogres had certainly been busy. He let out a sigh. Then he crept forward around the table and towards where the cave kept going, attempting to be a bit stealthy. He was distracted by Bunny stepping even closer to the bend to the next part of the cave. His eyes narrowed a bit and he frowned. How could he try to be the wall behind which they were safer if they moved in front of him?

Re: Chapter 1: Giant-Sized Problems

"Ah hear someone else."  Over her shoulder, Bunny whispered to the Zassil who'd moved up just off that shoulder.  "Not in the Giant tongue."

She spoke a few words, and the Spoked Wheel again pulsed with light.  Then, before moving off across the passageway and leaving a clear path for the Dracil, she whispered, "Ah believe that whoever it was has just cast a spell."

Re: Chapter 1: Giant-Sized Problems

Claissa wasn't made to be a spotter or scout, and unfortunately Niri's gifts at the subject was hindered by her inability to communicate. So she just kept as quiet as she could, with Niri keeping an eye out behind her - the tiger knew how to communicate the simple concept of danger, at least.

Re: Chapter 1: Giant-Sized Problems

Lissa pursed her lips in grim displeasure.  She nodded curtly to the remark about metal, then to the remark about speaking, breathing and spells.  The young blonde scholar could hear the faint sounds as well.  But had little to add at this point, she was starting to motion for Merrick to move his floating lights further down hall to help light the way when the dancing lights began moving - apparently great minds thunk alike.

She moved warily towards and around the table, glancing down at the corpses and dearly hoping that they would remain dead-dead.  A sharp intake of breath accompanied a roll of the shoulders as Lissabytta took up a position next to the table with a clear line of sight of the mouth of the passage to the right.  Her musket was trained on the opening, as Lissa felt the comfortably familiar butt of the longarm's stock nestled against her right shoulder.

Re: Chapter 1: Giant-Sized Problems

Merrick's Dancing Lights moved into the passage as everyone went deeper into the cavern, alert and cautious.  Stepping to where she can see dpwn the now-lit passage, Bunny determined that this new passage ended where ot looked to open into a second wide chamber within the underground cave.

Standing at the end of this passage where it opened up was a human figure visible within the dim lighting that reached it.  It stood still, arms and shoulders slumped forward slightly as its face stared back towards Bunny.  It made no other reaction.

"Ah see one," she whispered to the Dracil.  "But Ah sense more further off.  It has not spied us yet," she said with confidence.

"Let us see what more we can discover, before movin' in to put them to rest."  With these last words, Bunny crept out across the cave to a place fetched up against a rocky outcropping nearest to the next large cavern.

Lissa pushed forward with the others, her musket raised and tracking in front of her.   The blonde musketeer trained it to the right, as her vision shifted down the hallway following Merrick's floating lights.  She kept to the cavern walls, passing the pile of metal scrap and let her gaze settle upon the figure at the other end of the hall.

At least, that had been the plan.  But, a stumble as her boots scuffed the uneven floor caused her to lose her balance for a moment.  Lissabytta regained her balance quickly enough, but not before a rock kicked up by her boot careened off of the wall and into the pile of metal.

Re: Chapter 1: Giant-Sized Problems

The creature, an undead zombie it seemed, remained motionless and unresponsive as everyone moved into position.  Until Zassil stepped into the lead.  Right as the dracil entered into the passage, the zombie perked up and took interest.  It released a loud, wheezing moan that reverberated off the walls of the cavern.  Then lurched forward towards Zassil, arms outstretched.

Sounds of movement responded to the wail of the zombie; from deeper in the cavern.  From her position, Bunny could see another zombie next to a walking skeleton, just beyond the first one at at the edge of the light from Merrick's spell.  These two were armed; the zombie holding an axe and the skeleton a crossbow.  They were definitely alert, moving to attack.

OoC:

Re: Chapter 1: Giant-Sized Problems

"Claissa?"  All whispers and stealth fell away as the recalcitrant dead stirred themselves to movement.  Without taking her eyes from the far rock passage through which zombies and skeletons now issued, Bunny called over her shoulder to the red-headed girl.  "Claissa?  Ah am wonderin' if we mahght enlist the aid of your tiger friend to come up here and hold a line with Zassil?"

Arm outstretched, she took aim at the nearest shambling figure dimly lit at the edge of Merrick Tane's dancing globes.  "We will hold a line here," she said.  "Letting them come to us until we can get a measure of their strength."  A spark and bang then percussed within the rocky confines of the cavern, a pistol ball smacking wetly into undead flesh.  Bunny commenced then to reload, violent conflict now well and truly underway.

Re: Chapter 1: Giant-Sized Problems

Zassil looked slightly disappointed at Bunny's suggestion to hold the line there. He could easily move up to the zombie and likely hold it and its 'friends' ahead instead, thus negating any potential for his allies to be attacked. But he recognized that being closer to his companions was likely better for him.

So he readied to attack the first zombie to close with him, claw readied.

13:06, Today: Zassil rolled 10 using 1d20+5.  Initiative.

But it doesn't matter because Zassil is Readying an action to swipe at the first undead to come within range with a claw.

14:19, Today: Zassil rolled 23,5 using d20+6,d4+4.  Claw vs Zombie (readied attack).

Re: Chapter 1: Giant-Sized Problems

"Ah..." Claissa answered Bunny slowly, with an obvious fret in her voice. She didn't like this one bit, but how many options did they have? "All right. At least so long as Niri holds out all right." Claissa was a team player to a point, but if her tiger's life was at risk, all bets were off. Claissa wasn't responsible for her teammates in the same way.

"Okay!" she said more firmly, partly to shore up her own and Niri's morale. She was committed to this role now. "Niri, you guard there! I'll be right behind you!" The still-enlarged Niri obligingly moved to where Claissa was pointed and growled at the enemies ahead, while Claissa fell in close behind her and got ready to throw a blob of acid of her own. She didn't have much summoning left in her arsenal, and was opting to conserve it for now.

OOC: Niri moves to P6/P5 and readies a bite once something steps into melee range.
Claissa moves to P4 and readies to cast Acid Splash as soon as something steps into range, since they're out of spell range right now.

Re: Chapter 1: Giant-Sized Problems

Lissa watched as Bunny ordered a blockade to form using both Niri and Zassil as the breakwall.  With the lighting as it was and the movement in front of her, Lissa decided this might be a bit more pitched and therefore ammunition was going to be essential.  Her right hand tucked the butt of her musket under and into her armpit for a moment and the young woman immediately cast a spell on the powder horn hanging off of her belt, ritualistically murmuring the words of power, "Noitinumma Tnadnuba!" as her hand passed over the hollowed tapered bone.  Despite its name and shape, however, the blonde scholar had actually stowed some of the paper cartridges that she and Bunny had packed.

Stepping up after the tiger had passed her, Lissa moved to stand behind Bunny.  She pointed to the powder horn that was just behind her companion's left hip, "Draw cartridges from the horn..." she prompted Bunny quietly since her lips where near the pistol-priestess' left ear, "they will continually replenish for the next two minutes..."

And with that Lissabytta resumed her aiming stance, letting the stock of her longarm drop back into her right hand and bringing the musket back to the ready.

Re: Chapter 1: Giant-Sized Problems

The report of Bunny's pistol echoes violently within the cavern, the bullet tearing straight through the eye of the zombie and exploding out the back of the head.  It staggers as it continues to lurch forward but collapses once Claissa's glob of acid reaches it, going still amidst its own gore.

But the zombie was far from alone.  A second zombie, armed with an axe, staggers towards Zassil where he holds the line.  But before it can attempt to chop with the weapon Zassil's claw and Niris teeth shred the undead apart.  Behind this zombie advances a trio of skeletons, these armed with what look to be good equipment; likely stolen.

The lead skeleton is dressed in a light shirt of mail with a sword and a small steel round shield.  It slashes as it reaches Zassil but he easily avoids the clumsy attack.  The second skeleton is wielding a very fine looking, polished longspear, along with a steel skullcap and studded armor.  It takes position behind the sword-wielder and stabs at zassil with its spear's reach, but he deflects the attack.  The third skeleton stays further back; it is wearing a heavier suit of mail armor and wielding a crossbow, which it fires at Niri.  The bolt clatters against the cavern wall in a wide miss.

Follwing directly behind the skeletons stomps the Ogre Mother; still dressed in her burlap robe and still injured from the bullet she took from Lissa earlier.  The giant casts her gloved hands out towards you and an eruption of bright light envelops your party.  Bunny, Claissa and Zassil get the worst of the effects as the sudden flash causes them to see bright spots in their vision, but everyone else avoids any serious effects.

And last, a human-sized figure wrapped entirely in a large black cloak appears, taking cover behind the stone of the cavern.  No features are visible of the person wearing the cloak, but a glowing, disembodied hand hovers next to him.  [Language unknown: "Lesdinwhe t ntaielel, te omthi wilomeomeame ratna anwaho evhi researtic!"] his voice is raspy and ominous like the whisper of death; once his incantation finishes the hand floating next to him points a finger and a black ray shoots forth.  It strikes Zassil squarely as he fights with the skeletons, draining every ounce of strength from the dracil's body and leaving him weaker than he's ever known.

Re: Chapter 1: Giant-Sized Problems

Zassil had started to smirk as the zombies fell and the skeletons missed their attacks. Things were going better than he had thought they might. But his luck was always able to be changed. There was a burst of light and his eyes felt seared. He had to blink rapidly several times.

But then something worse happened. Magic struck him and his entire body sagged. He had to lean against the cave wall next to him for support. "Uggghhhh..." He felt so weak. He hadn't felt this weak since he was a hatchling! He tried to spit acid but coughed instead. He swallowed painfully and forced himself to spit the acid out, but it too was weak and a very small spray shot out at the skeletons.

12:32, Today: Zassil rolled 2 using 1d8.  Acid, 60 ft line, aiming for all 3 skeletons.

Re: Chapter 1: Giant-Sized Problems

Claissa was able to tell the spell that had struck Zassil, but its effect still seemed worse than she would have expected. She was caught off guard by a spell herself at around the same time, though it wasn't nearly as bad. "Ugh," she said as she shook her head, trying to clear her vision after the sudden, momentary change from the dark around her. "Not me," she answered Bunny briefly after that, as she needed her voice for her spellcasting.

Job one seemed to be to stop the spellcasting, but there were way too many threats around to break the defensive line. Instead she summoned one of her celestial dogs as close to the mage as she could get it, in hopes it would draw some magical fire. If it could last long enough near Mother, it might even interrupt a spell.

Niri, meanwhile, now had a skeleton right in front of her, so there was no need to keep holding back. She unleashed her claws and bite onto it, even if it wasn't the ideal target for such natural weaponry.

02:09, Today: Claissa Silver rolled 19 using 1d20+5.  Spellcraft.

Niri uses a full attack on the skeleton.

02:34, Today: Claissa Silver rolled 8 using 1d20+3.  Celestial dog bites man, plus Smite Evil. Thinking that's a miss :P

OOC: Summon Monster will be Claissa's 5th spell of the day - I fell behind on the magic inventory thread, but so far she's cast two Enlarge Persons (Lunk and Niri) and two Mage Armors (herself and Niri).

"One trick pony," Merrick mutters as he watches the Ogre Mother cast her spell.  His cards, rendered a poor choice due to distance and cover, the young man mentally forced the dancing lights forward to bathe their enemies in bright light and grant the group some cover of shadows while he threw a similar ball of webbing as before at the Ogre.

Web Bolt at Mom, I think moving the DL is a free action.  Don't want to risk using my cards for ranged touch given distance and soft cover penalties

Re: Chapter 1: Giant-Sized Problems

Merrick blasts the Ogre Mother with the same sticky web he had used upon the undead Father, to similar results.  The giant is covered in the sticky webbing and effectively ensnared as it begins to struggle against the strands.  Then Zassil reacts to his debilitation by launching a spray of acid to streak across the cavern and cover the trio of skeletons before splattering against the wall.

The acid is weak but burns the undead effectively; it draws their attention away from Zassil's companions.  Bunny's bullet shatters one of them in an explosion of bone, and while Niri seems to have some difficulty managing against the swordskeleton's shield, one of her paws slams against the monster and breaks it apart with the juvenile Tiger's enhanced size and strength.

The remaining skeleton loads and shoots its crossbow, having a clear shot at Zassil with its companions in the way.  A bolt strikes the dracil painfully in the chest, sticking into his armor and getting caught in the scales underneath.  It hurt but was not as bad as it could have been against a less resilient target.

Struggling against the webbing, the Ogre Mother shouts [Language unknown: "Ant meenle ulasstacmo!"].  She finally rips free of the sticky webs and steps forward, hefting her carved club.  It looked as though she was ready to start bashing.

[Language unknown: "Etnase p thioveder re, ouswitlar meera whehaslat er ica and."]  The black-cloaked wizard chanted once more, calmly and in the same raspy, ominous voice.  Once it finished, the glowing disembodied hand shot forward, flying through the air it passed Zassil and Niri.  The tiger batted a surprised paw at the sudden approach, but her claws passed straight through it without causing any kind of disruption.  The hand reached Claissa while she was chanting her spell and grasped her suddenly on the chest, just below her neck.

Claissa felt a wave of malaise and negative energy, a mixture of sickness and death pass through her as he muscles started to lock up.  But the hand soon released her and flew back to its place next to the wizard.  The sorceress managed to fight off the necromantic spell and even keep solid concentration on her own magic.  Her celestial dog appeared and growled at the deep evil emanating from the black-cloaked wizard.  It attacked, though its teeth found no purchase on the figure.

Re: Chapter 1: Giant-Sized Problems

Being too weak to mount any kind of offense, Zassil was, begrudingly, forced to go more fully defensive, changing his stance to try and better protect himself. He could barely stand with all the weight he was suddenly carrying - or rather with how much of his strength had been sapped by that bad magic. So he stood there, ready to take the hits for his allies and do nothing else. He pulled his morningstar out, though he had little illusion about using it.

OOC: Total Defense, not that it will help, and draw morningstar. Just....let me know when combat's over, lol.

Re: Chapter 1: Giant-Sized Problems

Lissa watched in horror as the macabre horde appeared at the edge of the light and started to shamble towards them.  Her musket felt heavy for a moment as the fear mixed with anticipation hit her like a wave.  "Dark magic," the blonde scholar intoned grimly, "There is a wizard ..." and she motioned for Merrick to push his lights further down so they could see better.  "He's draining strength ..."  Lissa narrated, even as the effects of the black ray became apparent as they worked on Zassil, "and trying to choke the life from us..." when the spectral claw attempted to envelope Clarissa.

All of them seemed to be necromantic spells.  As if the zombies and skeletons weren't obvious enough.

Lissabytta squeezed the trigger on her musket, having leveled the treasured longarm at the approaching ogress.  The powder ignited, but the auburn-haired gun mage knew something wasn't right.  She gritted her teeth as the longarm bucked with more flash then bang.

A single Rembaran expletive escaped her lips as the musket dropped to the ground and Lissa pulled the pistol from her belt. She could only hope that the Silver Fox was watching over her.  And not simply laughing her ass off...

Re: Chapter 1: Giant-Sized Problems

As soon as Claissa realized the spell that was coming her way, she braced for impact in a panicked sort of way, and was slightly amazed that she managed to shake it off. She'd never been much for magical duels. If it had worked, it likely would have been the game right there. Niri would just stay put as the others were picked off with Claissa unable to give instructions or provide any more spellcasting.

Even with that not coming to pass, once she finished her spell Claissa was deeply tempted to sound a retreat. If there'd been any more undead still in the fray, she probably would have. But the others were still in the thick of it, and she couldn't just cut and run with Niri and leave them to it, especially considering Zassil's condition.

"He's throwing paralyzing spells," she said as she glanced back to start a tactical withdrawal, both as information and explanation for her own retreat. She couldn't just stand there and cast easily interrupted spells with that going on. Instead, she called out, "Niri, kill!" with a finger pointed to the ogre, before lobbing another acid spell at Mother, then taking a few steps to the side and hopefully out of the immediate range of the evil spellcaster. She really wanted to just hurl Niri bodily at the necromancer and see how he fared in melee against an enlarged tiger, but one thing at a time.

OOC:
Niri:
-Free: 5 foot step toward Mother (to P7/P6), then attack with bite and claws.
-Full: Full attack on the ogre mother.

23:25, Today: Claissa Silver rolled 13 using 1d20+4.  Niri, claw Mother 1 (+1 Bless). Probably not a hit so I didn't roll, but 1d6+2 damage if it does.
23:27, Today: Claissa Silver rolled 20 using 1d20+4.  Niri, claw Mother 2 (+1 Bless).
23:27, Today: Claissa Silver rolled 6 using 1d6+2.  Niri, claw 2 damage (+1 die type/damage from Enlarge).

Claissa:
-Standard: Cast Acid Splash on Mother.
-Move: Move to N4.
23:30, Today: Claissa Silver rolled 11 using 1d20+4.  Acid Splash (ranged touch, +1 Bless).
23:31, Today: Claissa Silver rolled 3 using 1d3.  Acid Splash damage.

Re: Chapter 1: Giant-Sized Problems

The Ogre Mother staggers as she attempts to bring her massive club up to swing it.  The number of attacks volleyed into her are too much; Bunny's bullet is followed by Claissa's acid even as Merrick flings one of his magic cards.  Lissa's musket billows smoke into the cavern during its untimely misfire.  Then, at Claissa's urging, Niri lunges on to the ogre and pulls it down to the ground with her enlarged claws before sinking her teeth into the giant's neck as though it were her prey.

[Language unknown: "Ioha ore lin."]  The wizard's raspy voice spoke again as it stepped backward, now out of sight in the next chamber.  It seemed to be giving commands to the remaining skeleton, as the thing dropped the crossbow it had been wielding quite suddenly and sprang upon Claissa's summoned dog with its bony claws.  It scored a yelp as one claw sank in deep, though the dog seemed able to still fight.

[Language unknown: "Usmiti il comntesetion, aswit ai et."]  Chanting was heard from the chamber where the cloaked wizard stepped away, doubtlessly as it began casting another spell.
