Le Bastille
Built during the Hundred Years War, the Bastille originally served as the gate of Saint Antoine, the east entrance to to the city of Paris. Under the direction of King Louis XIII, the fortress now provides confinement for the king’s highest-ranking prisoners.

Its eight towers are connected by walls twenty-five meters high, the whole surrounded by a formidable moat.
