Back at the aerodrome Chalky changes clothes and burns his blood-spattered suit. "Bloody annoying that," he says to Matt, "I liked that suit. Egyptian cotton, nice and cool." Oddly enough he seems to have put the butchery behind him, a useful mental procedure he no doubt learned a Gallipoli in the vicious trench fighting.
"Now," he said to himself, "lemmee see. What shall I need?"
He drags out his backpack and starts to stuff objects into it.

(*The 1897 Turkish Army Mauser has the same characteristics as a '9mm Automatic Pistol' due to the 7.92x21mm pistol ammunition being a 'hot round')
