Hey, you'll get more players if you turn on requesting players. Also, when will the plot advance?

The plot advances at the rate of plot.

I'd actually planned to make this a solo game for each of you, but I can add some players if you guys like.

Also, Daniel, please be patient.  I'll start throwing plot at you, but I was trying to give you a chance to play your character a bit.
Amber, and indeed, most good games, are about you playing  your character.
Like, who is Daniel, and what does he want out of the life?
Remember, we (or at least, I), don't know anything about your character other than what you tell me.

I prefer games where you interact with other players as well as NPCs.

Considering that the game basis is Amber... interaction with each other may very well be in the GM's plans for later on.

On the other hand, solo may be a good idea, lest my weird mind drive you to read peculiar books and watch films that none of your offline friends have ever heard of.

I can bring you guys together, and perhaps bring in other players, too.  I have only the bare bones of a plot, though, and don't want to rush things before they're all fleshed out.

On that note, I'll bring everyone together soon.

It's not a big deal, it just threw me off.  I'm still trying to get a handle on your character, after all, and trying to get his motivation in being a thug for The Professor.
It doesn't seem the occupation for someone who rewards themselves with ice cream.
(perhaps he's showing his leanings towards good already?)

He was talked into it by another member of the wrestling team (and of the clown gang), his friend Rick Havers. One motivation? It pays a lot better than his regular part-time job as a janitor. What other reasons Rick used to persuade him I leave up to you (although I'd prefer to keep fraternity hazing out, as I don't see Tony as a frat boy).

Those notes also had the reason why every male member of the McGlinn family is recruited into the hero/villain business. I have some more notes located, if you'd like me to rmail them to you, nuric.

I guess I was looking for a reason for joining a gang other than "it paid well".   He could make more money than that with his abilities, I'd think.
I could come up with a reason if you like, but it would probably be something like huge debts, a gambling problem, or a flaw in Tony's character that he enjoyed breaking the law.   It could be peer pressure, but I see Tony being stronger than that, being a brilliant student and college wrestler.
If he's not, then I'll rethink it.


I apologize for not reading everything yet.  I'm up a bit past my bedtime, and I'm too tired to really concentrate.  I don't mean to minimize your writing, but could you summerize for me why it's family tradition for everyone to be pulled into the gang?
(though if it's some kind of criminal family, I guess that's reason enough)

There was an ancestor, Michael McGlinn, whose Y chromosome has a power plasmid permanently incorporated into it. An unusual one not seen anywhere else, but non-functional, assumed by historians to have been a rejected plasmid or one that was never released from R&D prior to the laws banning development or alterations of new plasmids. As the Y chromosome doesn't recombine during gamete formation, this odd legacy from the time when real supervilains and heroes walked the Earth has remained intact... and just in case something does re-activate it and whatever powers it grants, every direct male descendant of Michael is recruited when they reach adulthood. As, presumably, they carry the "McGlinn Y' with its' payload.

Tony is currently 21. The age of adulthood.

Hmm. You could describe some of what Daniel is thinking, or what he sees out the window, or questions that he asks, for starters.

I'm busy with work so my creative juices aren't flowing that well.  I'll be doing more soon.


I agree with Tony, Daniel.   I'm taking Daniel on a bit of a "wild ride" at the moment, and not giving him many options on what to do physically, but this is your chance to talk about what's going on inside Daniel's head
He thought he was an ordinary high school guy, and now he's being chased by, well, things and helped by a girl who he thought was just another nerd like him.

What is he thinking?   Is he freaking out?  Is he angry.  Is he sad?
What does he want to do?  What does he want to happen.

Amber is about really getting into your character, exploring what they'd be thinking and feeling.

I'll add something that might help you.  It's a Character Quiz, where you answer questions as your character to better flesh them out and understand them.

Go ahead and take the quiz, copy and pasting it, and let's see what happens.

Take your time with the quizzes, maybe only doing a couple of questions a day if you can.

So, no due date, than? Good. Some of these are ear-scratchers.

True, some are hard to answer if you are a normal person.   If you have any questions, please let me know.

I'll grant you that many are more suited for more hardened veterans of war and conflict than a college student and a high school student, but the basics are still there.

I saw... and here i am stuck on bed rest, having down time means i have to find something to do while it is down.

Plenty of reading materials online. Perhaps a webcomic? I might recommend Erfworld, Dr. McNinja, Narbonic, Subnormality (hard to read on small screens), Mindmistress, Sparkling Generation Valkyrie Yuuki, Another Gaming Comic (flash based), or VG Cats.

I'd recommend Order of the Stick, of course, and Elgoonishshive.

Order of the Stick is always good, and they're in the middle of an especially twisted family reunion/dysfunction storyarc right now.

Normally I'd recommend Goblins, but the current story may be going into NSFW psychological territory, with one character dying horribly.

El Goonish Shive is good at times, but the emphasis on male to female transformations often leaves me bewildered.

Air patrol is a good one, especially if you're a fan of Anthros, but there is some mild nudeity.

*smiles*  Elgoonishshive's emphasis on male to female transformations are actually my favorite part.
But it's not for everyone.



The time for the maintenance seems to be getting pushed back further and further.  Is that just me, or is that weird?

It was happening for me, too. Maintenance is over now though.

What I like in El Goonish Shive are the characterizations and the unusual magic. Some of the spells Nanase has are quite rare in media and gaming books alike.
And try not to think too hard about Mr. and Mrs. Dunkel, or you might break your viewpoint. There is something extremely different about that family, and it isn't Ellen.

I took the time it was down to write up a post, and then ohhh and ahhh a little and then frown at what isn't working yet.

That's okay.  The best Amber game, after all, is still usually a work in progress.  :)

I'd like it worded as if someone is seeing your character for the first time.  You'll write what they see, in as much detail as possible, as well as any obvious personality traits.

Well, lets start with the ones that i am fairly sure are not one of the parents... Flora and Llewella... who in short, are either too 'fluffy' or better at placing kids then showed... also Llewella has blue-green skin from being from the city reflected beneath the waves.

And then the ringer, the man who shows up on every list just because you should never count him out, Random... granted, for you tony he is one of the ones that show up on your main list. (granted, i would say Droppa MaPantz before Random, but her isn't family...)

It was in a superhero game, in which his character approached two other heroes who didn't know him, and he seemed very surprised that they attacked him as a possible ambusher. It's an old classic of the superhero genre for misunderstandings to happen when heroes first meet each other. Especially when, as in this case, one hero had just been dealing with a possible villain or criminal causing trouble.

Well, depending on how he approached, it might make sense.

If I approached in what I thought was a non-threatening manner, I'd be a little miffed at being attacked without warning.

And on other news, the Halloween doggy dinner went well. I got it later in the afternoon/evening than I'd hoped, but once I got through the shell it was a delicious crab. Not particularly scared, though... possibly the tank at the store was more stressful than being attacked by a small werewolf.

I'm having a quiet night at home.  I called in sick to work since my upper shin near the knee is very painful.
I can walk but not without pain.    I was hoping a day off and some ice would help, but I'll have to go to the doctor tomorrow.

Do you have any idea what caused it? Is there swelling or skin changes?

Does using a large branch to help walk relieve some of the pain?

It's not swollen, or red.  It's just painful, especially when I move the knee, and it's nearly buckled on me a couple of times, though not badly.  I'm thinking that there's an inflammation in the tendons or cartilage between the shin and knee.

hmmm, have you done anything lately that might have caused it? twisting in odd ways? fell down? lift something heavy? stumble?

off hand it sounds like a pinched nerve.... but without knowing more about whats up its hard to say...

I have arthritis in my hips, and gods it sometimes hurts like hell to walk too long, or go up and down stairs...

Last night at work I was in a fairly sedentary position, but I had a tall stool to sit on, and hopped on and off it several times to answer the phone and other things.
It was a concrete floor, but I hadn't thought it was that bad.  I certainly didn't think that I was hitting the floor hard or anything.

bone shards are possible... all you need is one chipping off and it can hurt for a while... granted it could just be a pinched nerve... or... hmmm...

The other possible thing is that the cartilage between your bones might have gotten flattened... get that pinched too far and you can cause some damage...

Yes, I was thinking before about a cartilage of tendon inflammation.

better to use it and get better, then to not and get worse and have to take far more time off.

Turns out it was tendonitis.  It's already feeling better after a couple of days of rest.  It was a bit tender, and probably a flareup of an old high school wrestling injury, aggravated by walking on concrete floors.

Yeah, things tend to go that way. I constantly worry that my knees will snap because when i was younger I put them though hell, and my kneecaps are very loose, as in i can push them halfway out of position to either side....

I could push my kneecaps like that too, when I was younger.   hopefully that's not a bad sign.

Aspirin and Ibuprophin helped.  I'll stick to that for now.

Aspirin is an excellent anti-inflammatory as well as a pain reliever. Folks are lucky to be able to buy it off the shelf, rather than hunting the beaver when they need it like in old days.

I'm NOT hunting for beavers.  They have work to do.

Why eew? Beaver meat was a traditional pain reliever at one time, thanks to the aspirin stored in certain glands. And being rodents, they aren't a huge hassle to catch (well, there are exceptions - porcupines) and taste pretty good. To wolves, at least.

beavers can be quite the pest...

I find that some nice hot tea can do wonders for everything!

I dont think Daniel gets how hosed he is... in the Amberite family, the lower your number on succession to the throne is.... the more enemys you have... I once played Random's kid... right after he became king... at first it was one of those things of "dont worry, your somewhere in the 30s" as a unclaimed kid(which happened a lot because other kids would go off looking for them, just to make some elders lives a living hell... or to use them against different elders) and then when i pulled the "take me to my Amberite parent" and landed next to random there was a lot of "oh shit" and "you just went from 30 something to 2nd... nice knowing you"


and yes, ignorance is bliss, but at the same time, you dont know just how much trouble you are getting into and cant do a thing about it.

I wonder whether kids sired by Dworkin's or Oberon's shadows inherit any traces of the ability to walk the lesser Patterns? Hmm. I don't think that was ever addressed in the books, just that a Shadow world that one of the actual royals stayed in too long gained increased reality and started to cast its' own shadows.

Corwin actully, he cast several reflections of himself from the 400+ years he spent in the earth shadow.

As for if kids of shadows can walk any of the complete patterns... no, though broken pattern can be walked by anyone. Also a interesting note, in order to walk say.... Corwin's pattern, the one he drew, either you have to be of his blood(sorry kids of eric :P) or, you have to be walking it with his permission, and generally that means either he has to be in trump contact(which is a really mean way to mess someone up on the pattern, if you can make contact that is.), or you have to be pattern charged by him.

I'd suspect that someone attuned to the Jewel of Judgement, wearing it, would likely be able to force their way onto his Pattern too.

I've always been a bit behind my human peers as far as aging... seems that werewolf biology matures at about 2/3rds the speed of human biology (8 year teeth coming in at 12 years old, puberty not completing until I was past 20, etc.). Chronologically, I'm 43. I don't look it.

I reached Adult at 12(gods, how some boys are still stuck at 6) and stopped aging for the most part, however... well, lets just say if the stories about unicorns are true, i can still ride one, granted it would more then likely be a black one and we would read dirty books together...

Ever seen the unicorn story in the Thieves World novels? The painter who could make his artwork come to life drew all of the city's vice and sin in the form of a black unicorn for some reason. It was... interesting.

Theives world is one set of books i have yet to read... i think... i used to work in my high school library and i did a lot of reading my senor year...

I liked the Thieves World books, though they got depressing after a while.

I agree that they got depressing, especially after one of the authors started killing off the gods. One single god, being defeated by the demigod champion of another pantheon made sense. A storm that washed away divinity throughout the region was not good storytelling.

Daniel, if I might make a suggestion?
You have 15 active games right now. Try sticking with just a few and cultivate them, instead of spreading your efforts wildly across too many games and spreading yourself thin.

Also, I now know how to hold myself back to read over what I typed, allowing longer, better posts from my DSiXL, like now. This wasn't a one liner, I've been having longer posts in my Zelda game. Also, that one has a definate place in the timeline, after Twilight Princess.

Narbonic and Sluggy Freelance both had evil kitten stories. One was incredibly ironic and sad (the kitten went to Hell for being used as a bomb by super-intelligent gerbils), the other was a cliched horror movie (the kittens were the offspring of Satan, sired when he was roaring drunk, and needed milk to restrain their evil urges... and mittens).

I'm sure that there are others out there. But as a dog, I'm prone to bark at the kitten.

Sluggy went downhill (in my opinion) for a while with the 4U City storyline, but since Zoe's resurrection it has regained a fair bit of the old quirky humor. The latest antics have involved Torg's vegetable garden, Kiki's chipmunk friends, and Bun-Bun posing as the cub of a bear robber.

     Regarding my name:  When I was 14, I went lava bowling with some friends and my other mother.  By and far, I got more '9's on my first throw than anyone, and curiously the spare was always different.  Invariably, I was able to pick up the spare, and due to my extensive collection of spares followed by nines, I was able to rack up pretty good scores.  They started calling me 'Nine Pin' and when I graduated acting school, I took it as my stage name.

Had a character once shadow walk into a new shadow, which she had never been to before. There was a shadow of her in the place that had somehow gotten assassins after her, as because her and I looked alike, they tried to kill me.

The point is... everything exists in shadow, and not all of it works out in ones favor... unless you probability manipulate the heck out of everything...
