Mittens Journal

Entry 1 (Date unknown by player)

I suppose a backstory is in order.  Grew up in Boringtown in Boringland.  Nice and safe and secure.  Most exciting thing that ever happened was when "Wild Girl" Betty got herself a baby out of wedlock then disappeared, leaving the orphan with her grandparents.  Probably ran off to the city, shirking her responsibility as a mother.  And to think I used to admire her!  Not that I'd do any better.  Actually...  If I somehow wound up a mom, I would NOT abandon my kid.  Even though that would mean I'd have to give up my dream of becoming an adventurer.

So I swore an oath of celibacy.  Not that it's a hard oath to keep.  Every guy I've ever met is little more than a walking blankedy-blank.  Ok not every guy.  But at best they're colossal bores.  I'd rather go fire walking with a three inch rusty nail in my heel than get stuck with someone like that.

ANYWAY!  Boring background aside, on to ADVENTURE!  After my first adventure I was left looking like some kind of cross between a person and a cat.  More on that later.  It's turned out to be both more inconvenient and less inconvenient than I expected.  More on that later.  I found myself in the city of ______ where I was summoned by the Church of Lillithan.  They sent me on a very simple quest: Protect a druid named Tam on her way west to settle her late father's estate.

We were accompanied by a wizard and a fighter.  Man I hate those guys!  Wizards are supposed to be wise and mysterious studious sages of great and terrible knowledge who spend most of their time in deep contemplation - and those rare times they speak its some profound insight or some ancient word of power that breaks rocks asunder.  Not this guy.  He's a know-it-all potty-mouth that is always putting others down.  And the fighter...   Fighters are supposed to be steely champions of rugged willpower, tougher than plate mail, sharper than swords.  Not this guy.  He's just as bad as the wizard.  And if that weren't enough, they behave this way in the company of a young lady who just lost her father.

Speaking of whom, this druid is made of amazing!  Her wolf companion too.  In spite of her company's lack of compassion and tact - and I must admit I had little to offer her in the way of comfort - she carries herself with more poise and dignity than a snow crowned mountain garbed in royal evergreen raiment.

The trip west was kinda disappointing.  We met a few bandits here or there, but they turned out to be spineless cowards that groveled like worms the moment they saw we were armed.  Not even worth stepping on, but at least they broke up an otherwise long, boring, and annoying (whenever the fighter or wizard spoke) walk.  Man I hate those guys!  I'd tell them they're worse than BOREDOM, but not only would that likely encourage them to be even more annoying, it wouldn't be entirely honest.  Nothing is worse than boredom.

It was evening by the time we arrived.  We were told the Druid's father hadn't just passed away peacefully.  He had been murdered!  And the suspect was already in custody!  The messenger had their doubts about the guilt of said suspect, but apparently most of the rest of the town did not, and there was talk of a possible lynching.

Once again, Tam proved the immense magnitude of her amazing awesome by not only choosing to confront the villain face to face, but by declaring that she wouldn't allow her feelings cloud her judgment!  To her, the suspect was innocent until proven guilty, and she wouldn't rest until the real killer was punished!

The jailer told us the circumstances of the capture of the prisoner, who as it turns out was a half-elf woman, and evidence against her was more than just a little weak.  When the body was found, she was found snooping about nearby and she fled when confronted.  That's it!  No witnesses, no murder weapon, no motiv.

When we were taken to her cell, she of course insisted through rivers of tears that she was framed.  I was skeptical, so I tried to catch her in a lie.

"Have you ever killed someone before?" I asked, watching her body language intently for signs of untruth.

"Only in self defense!" she answered.

Why admit to any killing at all?  It sure didn't look like a lie, and admitting to killing wasn't helping her case any.  I asked what she does for a living, and she admitted to being a thief!  The others questioned her too, got her side of what happened, and she claimed to be from some obscure far-away land and was banished here by some wizard named Elmira or something.  Far fetched, but none of it helping her case only convinced me all the more that she was being honest.

While this was going on, I noticed she unconsciously tried to swipe my shield.  Guess she's in the right line of work to have a quirk like that.  But it made sense when a dart was found among her belongings and she claimed to never have seen it before.

So I offered to settle the matter with divine intervention.  The group agreed, I prayed, and Lilithin shed light on the matter saying she was not evil.  This made her very uncomfortable.  She makes it quite obvious she doesn't like any of the gods.  Probably some tragic thing in her past, or whatever, so I refrained from prying or preaching.  Besides.  The best sermons are demonstrated, not preached.

I left my Journal with her to give her something to do, and judging from the lack of missing pages when it was returned to me, her little quirk doesn't go quite THAT far.  Even if she is guilty of murder, it kills me to see someone locked up like that.  Better dead than in prison.

The next morning there was a quick trial where we all gave our findings and the thief was set free from lack of evidence with the stipulation that she be charged with helping find the real killer.  Pretty good deal if you ask me.

We went to the scene of the crime to look for clues.  The place at first looked like it hadn't been lived in for ages, but when Tam spoke the secret password, the illusion faded to show a beautiful house underneath!  The wizard of course took the opportunity to be vulgar and insulting to Tam's family!  Man I hate those guys!  But apparently Tam was so bitter toward her mother and her magic she shrugged it off.

Re: Mittens Journal

Blood gushes from the wound
The cut is wide and deep
Right before I turn around
He falls to his knees
A clear song rings in the blade
When steel meets hardend steel
I hear the sound of wood that breaks
A blade cut through my shield

I drop the shield and grab my axe
A weapon in each fist
A fierce blow makes the helmet crack
The axe cut to the teeth

I rip the axe from the head
Covered in blood and brains
Leave the body lying dead
Ready to strike again
My sword cuts through clothes and skin
Like a hot knife cuts through snow
I smile as the bastard screams
When I twist my sword

[Chorus]
Sword in my hand and axe on my side
Valhall awaits! Soon I will die
Sword in my hand and axe on my side
Valhall awaits me, when I die
Bearskin on my back
Wolfsjaw on my head
Valhall awaits me, when I'm dead

I raise my axe above my head
My eyes turned furious rage
Yet more blood will be shed
This is a victorious day!
Blood gushes from the wound
The cut is wide and deep
As they turn around
I fall to my knees

[Chorus]

Re: Mittens Journal

Misty morning, clouds in the sky
Without warning, a wizard walks by
Casting his shadow, weaving his spell
Funny clothes, tinkling bell

Never talking
Just keeps walking
spreading his magic

Evil power disappears
Demons worry when the wizard is near
He turns tears into joy
Everyone's happy when the wizard walks by

Never talking
Just keeps walking
spreading his magic

Sun is shining, clouds have gone by
All the people give a happy sigh
He has passed by, giving his sign
Left all the people feeling so fine

Never talking
Just keeps walking
spreading his magic

Re: Mittens Journal

Tam and Xia never did catch up to the Kobold.  It fled to the woods, and as the two approached the tree line a samurai popped out and said, "You shall not pass!"  Tam didn't take no for an answer and attacked, but he defeated her in one hit.  Xia tried as well, and was also defeated.  Then the fighter and wizard showed up, and the samurai decided it was time to run.  It tossed a smoke bomb and vanished.

The group healed up and met up with a Gnome Bard who entertained them till dark.  As they slept, the Kobolds tried to attack again with darts through open windows!  The group gave chase, but it was Xia who found one.

Kobolds use Kama

Pitch Pipe the gnome!

Tens reappear in a flash of light at night!  Xia on the ground near a Kobold.  Mits' First attack missed.  2 more kobolds attack!  2nd attack hit thanks to flanking and inspire courage from bard.  Mits kills the one next to Tam.  Master Cho goes to aid Xia!
Kobolds miss.  Wizard melee!  Tam on boxes high ground with guy next to her misses.

Command works, but it dodged all but wizard's fatigue spell.  Wizard Magic Missile vs. Tam's high kobold.  Kobold missed Me, hit Tam.  Fighter flank with me, but missed.  Tam finish off her kobold.  Dog chomped mine.  Mits missed.

Cho crit fail!  Whacked his own head!  Wiz

Her name was cleared by the guards because they had a dead kobold "proving" she's not the killer.

Ye Han Do

Bard was held captive.  Willing to show us where the villain is.  We agree to go to Tam's place.  Brother Fu Cho of Cha made dinner.  Was a friend and student of Tam's dad.  who didn't always go by the name of Grahm.  Took the name after he left his previous occupation.

Silhana is Tam's mother's name.  When Tam was concieved they left Cha.  Born in Mir.  His real name was Joseph Cartigan.  Familiar to Bard, great hero who rebuilt after gods wars.  Last quest was to complete the Heroe's Bane.  Didn't tell Tam to protector.  Cho got a vision from his deity to come help, but came too late.  His debt of honor to daddy.

Fighter: You trust a gnome?  Xia: he's not a Kender.  Me: Why not?  He helped us with the Kobolds when he could have fled.

Tam shows the fragment.  Cho shows eye of sword.  Which will seek out the other pieces.  He explains use of the items.  Xia's eyes go big and puts wand away.  Tried to bluff that it did nothing.  She calls it a wand of see through wall.

Fighter Gnomes are like bad pets.  You feed 'em you can't get rid of 'em.

Cho: interesting, last time the secret passage was in library.  Xia finds books of interest to the rest of us.  Mits gets book on Dragon lore.

Ninja Kobold assasin suicide.  Capture is dishonorable.  Suicide honorable.

Tam called us friends!  Went to identify magic items.

Cho: I'm a mere monk.  Cannot identify them.  (other than scrying mirror)

Tam's mom's homeland is elven kingdom to the north.

Xia won't go inside the temple for healing.

Re: Mittens Journal

When all of a sudden, POOF!  I appeared in a flash of light in another place and time!  It was night, but there was enough light for me to see Xia was dead on the ground nearby, with a Kobold standing over her!  I charged at the thing and the rest of the team came into view, along with two other ambushing Kobolds!  I killed the one hassling Tam while the monk guy rushed to aid Xia.  Was she still alive?

Along with the others there was a gnome bard who was using music to magically bolster us.  I didn't have time to ask what's with the singing gnome, but was happy for the aid.

I commanded the furthest Kobold to approach but it dodged all of our attacks... except the wizard!  He whacked it with his stick and there was a terrible sound like the growl of a hell hound along with a flash of darkness.  I was shocked his foe was still standing after being hit with a dread spell like that, but these Kobolds were proving to be quite resilient.

He then followed up with a magic missile to the other Kobold going after Tam.  It then slashed Tam while the one next to me clashed it's kama against my shield.

Re: Mittens Journal

Cho offered to patrol downstairs while the rest of us slept upstairs.

Pitchpipe wake up on a rock outcropping overlooking vast valley, with steep high mountains all around, a path leading into the mountains behind.  Alkeen's Way!  A rainbow shimmer on the grassy valley that made deep emotional music just at the edge of perception when the wind blew through.  Full moon out of season.  15 mountain sized dragons stood atop each of the peaks around the valley, all staring at me!  1 of each of the cromatics, metalics, and gems!  Directly across was the gold dragon who shook the valley with a brush of his claw.  Rears his head up.  "MORTAL!  ONE UPON YOU HAS REQUESTED THE AID OF THE GREAT ONES!  "the great ones?"  "US!  THE COUNCIL OF WYRMS!  DO YOU ACCEPT OUR AID!" "yeah?"  "THEN ENTER THE VALLEY!"

Can feel the magic energy entering even through pores!  "You did well."

Most beautiful black haired human woman!  With a kiss pass out.

Tam: "BEFORE WE GIVE THIS AID, WE MUST ASK YOU WHAT YOU INTEND TO DO WITH GOLGATHANE?  "the broken sword?"  "YES" "reassemble it."  "TO WHAT END?"  "it is my destiny."

Sad voice: "This is the best I could do."  Elvish woman in animal skin green and brown hair.  "More than I deserve"  "You can thank one of your party members."  "Who?"  "Can't say."

Wizard:  Sees the stars.  Can see the universe including a black hole, comets.  "What's the price?"  "IT IS TO BE PAID BY THE ONE WHO MADE THE REQUEST."  "May I ask who made the request?"  "YOU MAY ASK."  "Well it seems only fair I should pay my share of the price."  "YOU WILL."  "What happens if I decline the offer?"  "THEN YOU DECLINE."  (asks questions that get cryptic answers)  "OK fine, where do I sign up?"  Walks down, poof back to outcropping.  Turns to face the presence.

Old old old man hunched over.  Universe looking robes.  Leaning heavily on ornate staff.  Balding.  Golden eyes.  Obviously Alkeen.  "Alkeen I presume."  Alkeen smirks.  Asked question like who made the question.  Alkeen shrugs.  "You of all should know.  Knowledge does not come easily or quickly.  At least... knowledge worth knowing."  "But it doesn't hurt to ask."  "Very true."

Tens.  Sky filled with stars and sun.  no shadows.  feeling of peace.  "UP!"  forced to stand.  back on the outcropping.  still cursed.
"good decision."  Lilithin!
"and so cute too.  i know you'll do well.  just remember you all travel together.  and you all need each other."  whomobile.

Fighter: "Oh shit."  red: "AT LEAST THIS ONE GOT THIS RIGHT."  GOLD "SHUT UP."  "i'm not worthy."  BLACK "YOU GOT THAT RIGHT."  GOLD "SHUT UP."  gets on knees.  "STAND"  REVEAL "DO YOU ACCEPT"  "am I worthy?"  "YOU WOULDN'T BE HERE IF NOT."  "who am i to refuse."

"you still can't have him!"
"but he is in my jurisdiction now."
"be that as it may.

Short martial arts dude.
7' red head norwegian wearing toga with stein in hand.  hammer in belt.  laughs.

"he's still mine."
"that's for him to decide.  stand!  i didn't help a weakling."
"youre a bad influence"
"
Fighter: "kortin i know."

"speak to my follower in your group to learn about me."  cordius, god of the mind.

Xia: day/night cycle.  GOLD DRAGON "WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?!"  All look like they're ready to pounce.  "I guess it was something I ate?"  Tries ring it fails.  "YOU DO NOT BELONG IN THIS WORLD"  "that we agree on."  "CAN WE EAT HER?"  "all bones"  "SHE'S GOT ELF SHE'LL TASTE GOOD!"  GOLD: "SHUT UP."  backing away.  "DO YOU KNOW HOW YOU GOT TO OUR WORLD?"  "there was a spell and a flash of light.  please dont eat me."  "BAD ENOUGH YOU GOT PAST OUR DEFENSES.  THEN YOU HAVE TO GO ASK FOR AID."  "i dont remember doing that."  "YOU WOULDN'T.  "  "are you gods?"  LAUGH "NO."  "then what are you?"  "WE ARE THE GUARDIANS OF THIS WORLD.  WE HELPED POPULATE IT."  "so it wont be the gods helping me"

familiar voice call her name.  she's suddenly in a long, great hall.  standing on the table with nothing but candles.  seating around the table was the gods.  head of the table is Alkeen.  murmering to each other.  "i'm still not on the menu!"  Plump woman "honey, please, we're not like that."  "then why am i on the table?"  "so we can see you?"  "wunna see something?" spanks herself.  chuckles and eye rolls.  beautiful one says to pudgy one, "risk don't

Alkeen.  "who has the best claim?"
Risk: "that would be lunara and i?"
"nobody's claiming me!"
beauty: "you're not from our world.  so let me explain.  we care for souls when they die.  so we will vie for your favor."
"good luck with that."
Risk: "I knew it!"
Alkeen: "Why such emnity?"
"why?  because gooods aren't good for anything."
Dark: chuckle "really?  i say let her be, then.  then famus would auction her off to the demons and devils."
Alkeen: "she still has the choice.  whatever may have happened.  sounds like i can sympathize.  i too once had issues with the divine in my world.  just bear in mind that we are not the divine of your world.  we are different."

"ok i'll file that little tidbit"

Me and Fighter: "FORK AND KNIFE?"
Fighter now has a harpoon from the gods.
Talked with Cho about jingly
Xia used invis ring.  Scout ahead and disabled traps.  Log trap hit Xia.  Pitchpipe ran ahead, tripping the net trap, but evaded it.  Mits heal check on Xia.

Fighter v wiz
"Didn't the gnome say he came this way?!"
wiz: "likely set the traps after he escaped."
"Damn wizards and their friggin logic!"

Tam can't track.  Prayer no workie.  Mits suggest woof.  woof come upon scent breaker.  cho going to use scroll, but xia stopped him.  fighter snatch scroll.

tam grabs daddy's will at westwind.  kaboom!  fighter opened the scroll.  "that idiot opened the scroll."  "yea.  what?  i got curious."  managed to lure him to a bar with a mug of ale.

cho and tam manage to fuse the eye and sword.  Tam decided East, direction of Cho's home.  Aberix.

75x2horses + 35wagon = 185gp.  2 horses and wagon bought by Tam.

Mits sold old shield for 10gp.  -2 gp to pay off "bandit"

Standing stately a young, 18 yr old wannabe wizard appears in a poof demanding a tax for the crimson shade.  Resists sleep spell from bard.  Fighter kept saying move.  Wiz started casting BS spell and POOF a shorter scrawnier foe appeared.  Cat like creature with a huge claw.  Fighter threw harpoon and misses.  Mits cut rope.  Blue wiz ask for 2 gold.  toss to side of road.  cat runs, blue wiz takes money and poofs saying "remember this!"

Tam takes over and says "we don't attack till i say we attack."  Everyone but fighter voted yes.

Brother Fu Cho chats with city guard and gets us in.  Fighter went off to the brothel while the rest of us went to the Silver coin.  We came upon a human bard performing well.  Pitchpipe gave a musical challenge.  Mits bets a gold on Pitchpipe.  Tam pays for everyone but Cho.  Human wins.  Xia scarfs up lots o gold.

Went to have conversation to Fighter.  Pitchpipe came along.  Fighter even paid him a compliment!

Next morning we all go to the marketplace.  Mits went to get the flag of Lilithin.  Fighter gets chain.  Tam goes after bull hair.  Pitchpipe goes for string.  Wizard takes care of poor old man with gold coin he found.  Coin glows then disintegrated.  Me went to get seal on tower shield identified.  Break the seal and will be protected from evil for a short time.  Xia pays the fine and sign-up fee for thief's guild.  Wizard finds wooden token on his misshapen pillow.  Under the pillow was a bag with 10 plat (100 gold) and 1 super silver Lunara's silver.

Flint stayed up all night to prepare Pitch Pipe's Defense.
Tam visited Pitch Pipe in prison.
Mits looked for people to vouch for him.
Malkus and Xia did nothing to help, but at least showed up to the trial.
Cho wasn't there!  (Claimed to be getting supplies)

Pitchpipe accused of performing without a license.  Ignored complaints of noise.  Fled rather than pay, but was forced.

Tam: "Worth it to learn about my ally."

Byron:  Was worried about playing Mal and char interaction.  Maybe be a little more familiar /w the rules.  Ugly to JD for playing Jane well.   there could be a problem with pivots being the only way to advance.
JD:  lot of fun.  Us and Firefly is comedy gold.  Bad that Byron is suffering.  Good I play an awesome Jane.  Ugly: to me for Book's moment   system: xmen system for initiative.  allows for comic book combos easier like colossus throwing wolverine.
Me: liz did great.  resolved who playes what char well.  lots of rolls.  ugly to salow for his portrayal of wash.
Salow: yay playing!  yay liz running serenity.  lends itself to the system.  system lends itself to storytelling.  bad already mentioned, system could use some tweaking, house rules.  ugly to byron for his portrayal of mal.
liz: i LOVED making characters in this system.  love don't ask me, tell me.  helps a lot for making the story flow.  rules light allows for flexibility.

Things to poke fun of in FFXIV

NPCs who act like you've been gone a long while.  (Explained: the echo messes with your perception of time)

Switching weapons to staff makes you smarter.  (Explained: no you're just the same regardless of gear swaps.)

Specific move sets bolted to specific weapons.  (No again.  They're telling the story wrong.)

Nanamo gets poisoned in the presence of WHM.  Also, Ishgard knight dies in your arms.  (People and they're changing the story for drama.)

Monologuing villains.  (Mits in particular loves this.)

Mothercrystal being all cryptic.

Infinite loops in cutscenes.  Like archer quest where, "..." just repeats the conversation.

The power to exit a cutscene and re-enter.  Enemies are stuck waiting for you to attack.

Silly quest in Drybone where you put on dirty pants and shirt to fool everyone regardless of your other gear worn.

Letting villains escape.  Not calling the authorities or appealing to the people.  Shrugging off the elementals' Greenwrath / supporting it as "nature."

Emotional interludes in the middle of urgent crisis time.  Like Alphinot talking with wheelchair man ON THE WAY TO BATTLE THAT DECIDES FATE OF THE WORLD.

Quest NPC sending you on unneeded errand (Like getting Minfilia's knife slotted with materia when she could have explained it.)
