Over the radio on Project channels can be heard intermittent long-distance radio traffic from Project teams operating somewhere in Region Kilo's area. Signal strength indicates that some sort of repeater is being used to boost signal strength.

The most likely explanation is that COMMO KILO ALPHA ONE WHISKY ALPHA was active. KA-C1 or "COMMO Kilo Alpha" was the designation of a Project retransmission station in this part of Washington State, one of likely several in Region K. This station provided secure repeater service and boosts the signals of all teams that are using the correct channel in its coverage area, the Puget Sound. COMMO Kilo Alpha also had a satellite uplink, allowing for easy communication with any other linked Region and Prime Base. Every Region and most states had at least a few stations similar to COMMO Kilo Alpha to facilitate radio and telecommunication and eventually computer data transfer. Most were automatic and unmanned after activation but some were co-located with other Project manned installations.

There was also a civilian-sounding Morrow Project radio station broadcasting on the AM and FM bands in the clear. It is currently issuing repeated warnings to evacuate the Mount Rainier area and Old Tacoma due to threatened volcanic eruption.

PD Note: Thinking more about this thread, tactical communication between PCs in the same thread doesn't need to be here. But traffic over the longer range net should be here.

The challenge is X-Ray Delta and countersign is Tango Tango. This is used if everything is nominal.

The duress challenge is Foxtrot Delta and countersign is Foxtrot Tango. This is used to covertly signal there is a problem on either end, even if someone else is listening.

From the tow truck and Scout parked on the Open Road, Daniel broke into the radio net.

"Kilo Zulu 4 from Romeo 3-1. Suggest you set your vehicle radio to repeater. That should give you five klicks range. Break.

"Romeo 3-2, be advised our casualty is not doing well. Nightingale has patched him up but he's lost a lot of blood and needs more. We need to get him back to base as I am not authorising a transfusion. Say again, no field transfusions are authorised. Over."

Andy's voice replies to KZ-4's recommendation.

"Vehicle radio set to repeater.  Over."

Andy's voice is again heard over the radio,

"10-4 Elliot.  Romeo 3-2 this is Kilo Zulu 4. Injured has received immediate aid.  Ready for recovery.  Kilo Zulu 4 is sitting dark and quiet.  Will advise via radio when I can hear your approach.  Are you running quiet and dark?"

Picking up on the Trucker slang of "10-4", Daniel replied, "This is Mike Romeo 3-1, also known as "Big Deuce".

"I got my ears on. Good buddy, I read you five-by-five, you are coming in loud and proud, wall to wall and treetop tall. Am piggy-back and 3-2 is riding in convoy with us. 10-4, we have our sleep masks and running hammer down. I'm back out."

Project speak: "Kilo Zulu-4 from Mike Romeo 3-1. I read you Lima Charlie. Be advised, are towing another vehicle. Roger, am running dark at maximum safe speed. Out."

Elliot's voice come over the comm channel. "The wounded is a young man who was possibly shot by our people in a firefight today. He is stable and unarmed, ready for extraction. Over."

"Mike-Romeo 3-1, understood.  Awaiting your arrival."

Unexpectedly, the radio came to life. They had transmitted a SITREP upon leaving camp in the morning and were not expecting a call back. They were to check in next once they were in sight of James Island near La Push.

PAPA-FOUR-FOUR. THIS IS KILO SEVEN TWO. FLASH TRAFFIC. I AUTHENTICATE BRAVO LIMA SIX THREE NINER VICTOR.

It was a priority coded transmission.

Lina quickly checked her code cards and verified the callsign and authentication code as good.

This was obviously bad news. One saving grace was they were seen three days ago and wouldn't apparently depart for another four. If they were travelling like the team in a small boat then they would take at least two days travel if not more to arrive at La Push and James Island. Still, this didn't leave them a lot of time!

This would put their new position as hiding behind a small islet and some sea rocks just up and off the coast.

Lina wasn't able to get more than a fragmentary response. There was a lot of interference on the channel. It seemed possible their frequency was being jammed. One weakness of the PRC-77's analogue signal was that while it was encrypted it was not frequency-hopping and thus susceptible to being jammed.

In reply to Project Director (msg # 35):

Once the light rain stopped, reception improved. Leaf's voice came over the radio. "Comet, this is Spirit. Do you read me? Over."

"I couldn't get too close. But I can see they enlarged the hole. There's a winch by it. Next to the winch is a very large, long thing under a tarp. It looks like a pole, only bigger. I see some tents inside loops of barbed wire, and a guard patrolling outside the wire. I think they have workers in there. There's a bunker set up to cover the tents as well. They are more concerned with people escaping than coming in. They set up lights and a generator, doesn't look like they have night-vision. There's another guard post watching the sand spit that connects the island to the land. I'll try to make it out before dawn in three hours."

"PAPA 4-4 from KILO ECHO-0-1... we read you LIMA CHARLIE..."

Project Base Tukwila was asking for a SITREP.

Lina thought for a moment as she went thought the SALUTE report format in her head to try to condense thing as best as she could.


"Copy KILO.  SITREP follows.   PAPA Four Four has made it to the objective location.  Suspected Krell forces have possession of target.  We suspect that they have recovered at least one warhead.  Repeat. They have recovered a warhead and are trying to remove more.  BREAK.

OPFOR has a large steamship anchored nearby with estimated 20 to 30 crew and troops. They seem well armed and we have observed Project small arms.   Local guide suspects that they may be from Portland.  BREAK.

We have allied with a local native tribe and intend to interrupt Krell recovery efforts soon.

OVER."

There was a delay of a minute, then Project Intelligence Specialist Darryl Weaver came on.

"PAPA 4-4 this is KILO 7-2. We are unable to assist at this time. Are you able to disrupt or delay recovery of the warheads? Have any warheads been transferred to the vessel? Over."

"Kilo, last known location was on the island.  We last had eyes on about 10 hours ago.  Team lead is working with locals on a plan to rescue the work force and shut down Krell operations. It's gonna be quick and dirty for tonight I think.   We will update you later when we know more.  If you have any advice, we're all ears.  Over", Lina replied.

Darryl replied, "Roger, I have good copy.

"We will not be able to assist for 48 hours due to all assets being tied up in eruption of Mt. Rainier.

"Will advise if able to provide assistance sooner.

"Your priority is to recover, deny or destroy the weapon. Prevent further recovery of other weapons.

"Anything else?"

"KILO, I copy . Mission priority to destroy, deny or recover the weapons.  48 hours minimum for assistance. Break.

I will contact you tomorrow on the next pass over.  If we have anything urgent, we will attempt contact via radio if possible.  We've had difficulty reaching you in the last day.  Might be the volcano or other atmospheric interference. Break.

"Have good copy on your last. Science Team Sierra Six estimates we are overdue for an eruption. A lava dome has formed, there's frequent outgassing and dust injections into the atmosphere that's playing hell with comms. Just bad timing really. Good luck, give us a SITREP tomorrow.
