"Lima Zulu Four, our contact from the base, has run into a medical emergency.   They're in a three-eleven and can't transport an injured local. They're requesting a rendezvous and an evac.  I got their location here."
, Lina replied.

She held out a pad with a series of grid coordinates.

Re: Fade Away and Radiate

On the seashore, the sky was dark save for a glow on the western horizon. Stars were starting to come out in the East, over the mountains, but there were dark masses of clouds there as well.

Finally, all the team members that were at the fishing camp were finished eating. It was a heck of a good dinner of Coho! And they'd heard that since the war and the destruction of the dams on the Columbia and other rivers, river trout and salmon could grow as large as 6-7 feet now.

The Monroe family, finished with supper and the chores, sensed the newcomers were getting ready to leave and saw them to the door. Ryan and Kellie, hugging one another as their remaining children gathered around, again expressed gratitude. "Thanks again, Captain Kim. And thanks to you folks in the Morrow Project, for helping us get our boat back and in working order come spring."

In the forest, night had fallen completely. After Andy moved the XR311 into position, Elliot used the winch to climb down again, this time with the vehicle's issued large medkit. The 5kg medkit satchel was fully stocked, resembling a personal medkit but with more drugs, bandages, supplies, and diagnostic equipment.

The young man, a boy almost, was becoming more conscious and was clearly in a great deal of pain. "Ahhh! My leg! Get this horse off me, please!" If they could get him up to the 311 they could lay him on the rear deck (which was flat) but his legs would be unsupported unless they found a stretcher somewhere.

Capt'n Kim smiles "Not a problem.  I'll inform my Father he will be out fishing more.  He will probably not say much, as he will be enjoying the silence that fishing provides. AND PLEASE.. give him a stern look when he wants to go full throttle.

Oh... there are a few new boats the men have nearly finished, and some in the yard as I recall that need new planking from dry-rot. I'll check on what the men want for them.  Definitely blue barrels... maybe no charge even, considering the circumstances."

Re: Fade Away and Radiate

Keying the mic, El tells Andy, "This guys is coming around. Over."

As the young man becomes aware of his surroundings and starts to talk, Elliot repeats his earlier question. "Hey. We're going to help you. My name is Elliot. What's yours?" Elliot feels more comfortable moving closer to the young man, and evaluates the horse and its position. If he is easily able he'll lift up on the corpse to allow the boy to free his leg.

Once he has the patient talking El asks him, "How did you get shot?"

Re: Fade Away and Radiate

Standing at the top of the ravine, Andy calls down quietly to El and his patient.  "Elliot, if I lower the winch cable, can we lift the horse off him?"

Thinking back to their training, he tried to remember the contents of the vehicle med kit.  "I think there's some pain meds in the kit.  Might be a good idea to keep everyone calm."

"And by the way, if you missed the TX, I put the radio in repeater mode.  We can talk to the others directly from our 68's."

Re: Fade Away and Radiate

Using the winch, Andy and El lifted the lifeless beast off the trapped rider.

Using the vehicle-issue large medkit (see Personal Loads thread) they were able to dress his wounds, apply a tourniquet to staunch the bleeding and administer pain medication to calm him down.

Back at the fishing camp the team withdrew to the Ranger in good order. The return trip in the Ranger to the Open Road took only about 5 minutes as they were travelling fast. There they RVd with Windigo (the tow truck) and the stricken Scout. It was completely dark by then.

They could make Andy/El's position in about 15 minutes travelling cautiously, or in about five minutes at maximum safe speed along the trail hacked through the forest.

Re: Fade Away and Radiate

While patching up the wounded man, Elliot offers simple reassurances and asks him basic questions.

"Hey. We're going to help you. My name is Elliot. What's yours?"

Once he has the patient talking El asks him, "How did you get shot?"

During the maneuver with the winch cable El uses the PRC to communicate with Andy instead of yelling up the ravine with instructions. The operation is conducted with discretion and as little noise as possible, using NVG instead of the 311's lights or flashlights.

When the mangled metal head is as patched up as he can be, El radios to Andy. "Ready for extraction. Holding position. Over."

Jimmy will organize and provide a security perimeter while the recovery operations commence, likely with Tina, Jenna and possibly Bobby.  He will, of course, also be on watch.

Andy remains above the ravine, taking up a watch position on the .50 after the horse has been moved off the young man.  Keeping as quiet as possible, he listens for the approaching vehicles.

His reply to Elliot is picked up be the vehicle radio and broadcast to the approaching team members.

Re: Fade Away and Radiate

Within minutes, Andy heard vehicles approaching along the trail from the north, in the direction of Bellingham. These were not the rattling, slow-moving liquid-fuel or methane burners of the locals or other travellers along the Open Road like the Trucker, Bikers or Badges, but the more quiet Morrow Project Vehicles (MPVs).

(While quiet MPVs were not silent of course, because although the engines were fusion-electric hybrids their springs and chassis still tended to squeak and rattle a little, and the tires made noise as they splashed along through mud and puddles of standing water.)

Soon, Andy saw a Project-issue 3-wheel Honda electrical-powered ATV pull up. It was fully geared up. Riding it was a woman dressed in Project coveralls under a rain poncho, wearing a visored Kevlar helmet. She was armed with an M10B shotgun. Behind her, a Ranger pulled up, also with running lights off. Behind it was a pre-war tow truck (probably a Ford) that was armoured-up, and hauling a damaged Commando Scout. The Scout's turret was traversed to the rear, covering that direction. The tow truck was retro-fitted with a fusion power plant by the lack of obvious engine noise and was painted in standard Project O.D. green with Morrow Project markings.

Once they stopped, two more Project members armed with Stoners (a man and a woman) deployed to provide cover and form a perimeter. The Ranger had a MAG-58 mounted up top.

After Elliot dosed his patient with Morphine, the boy relaxed from a rictus of pain into a peaceful stupour. Finally, he was roused enough to answer.

He babbled, "uhhh... my name? It's... Logan Whitestar... I mean, Bert. Bert Monroe. I got shot... by some blasphemers.... they looked like you, come to think of it... are you going to kill me? Just curious. That'd be cool. I mean, not cool... I feel really, really, really.... good. Thanks for the medicine. I like you."

Elliot smiles at Bert. "We are the people trying to help you, not trying to hurt you. Just relax and stay still. When we have to move, I'll wake you up."

When Bert is resting Elliot breathes heavily. This was news. He does a more thorough check of the boy's body, ostensibly looking for wounds but primarily checking for weapons.

When he is satisfied that there is nothing to stab or shoot him with Elliot withdraws a short distance down the ravine to make a private report.

Andy climbs out of the ring mount, Elliot's M10 at his side.  Walking towards the team he introduces himself, "Andy Maxwell.  Proper handshakes and introductions after we get the situation in the ravine under control?"

"I've got the winch lined up to pull the kid out.  It's about 5 meters deep.  Had to put the horse down and we don't have any sort of stretcher or travois.  I figure we can rig something up to lift him out."

Pausing for a moment, he presses the transmit button on his radio.  "El, the cavalry has arrived.  Give us a couple minutes to get situated up here and we'll send some help down.  Copied your earlier TX.  Might change our plans a bit."

A man Andy recognised (and Elliot would recognise) climbed out of the tow truck. It was the local Project liaison, Daniel Black Feather. Although an Amerind with strong Trucker ties, he'd helped the Project a great deal in the past year, or so they'd heard. He now ran the northernmost Project outpost in Maryville. While technically he outranked everyone here by being attached to the Group Command Team, his position was more organisational than operational. It wasn't too unusual to see him in the field and he would often help bring in newly activated teams when he wasn't running his truck stop.

Although he wore Project coveralls he also had a bandanna and cowboy hat, and he was armed with an M1911 in a shoulder rig, sawed-off double-barrel in a thigh holster and cradled an Atchisson assault shotgun. This would have been normal for the couple of times Andy and El had seen Daniel, although they weren't stationed at the Morrow outpost and had only run across Daniel a couple times at the main base in Tukwila.

""Howdy. Got an ID on the wounded feller?

Another Project member, obviously a team medic, climbed out of the Ranger and came over. She nodded at Elliot.

"Hello, guys.

Daniel, the other guy's gone. The trip was too much. And he'd lost too much blood." She looked like she wanted to say more, but stopped.

"We got another one? Is it the Monroe boy they told us about? We need to be really careful in dealing with these guys. They look like refugees from a Renaissance Faire. One tried to stab Jenna when she was trying to help him. It's like they're fanatics or something."

PD Note: Andy and Elliot have seen Daniel around. They can tell that Tim, Jimmy, Alice, Lina, Tina Maria and Bobby were all very recently thawed (activated). All their clothing and gear is new and shiny, etc. Everyone else they've seen seems to have a bit of wear on them.
