Setting down his Dragunov Filat looked over at Lena. "You are wanting help with antenna, yes? or is not needed if talking to boat?"

Antenna not needed to talk to the boat, but thanks.

He looks around at the silent ones and nods to Captain Kim.

"Then that is what we will do."

He pulls out a map and traces a line down the hill and the far side of the 'sand bar'.

"This look like a good route to everyone?"

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

In reply to James (Jimmy) Gerrold MacGuire (msg # 44):

They looked at the map of the headland they were atop. There were three routes down, all steep and forested. There was the ocean side (west) down to Rialto beach near where the old picnic area used to be, but it looked a little marshy, the Quillayute River side (southwards, very steep) and the slope near the Dickey River (east, probably the easiest).

Jimmy indicates the slope by Dickey river.

Capt'n Kim nods back "Yes, Dickey river looks best. Should be able to cover the approach with a M-79 and a prone shooter when we get across."

We could get ourselves in a position to use some cover of night.

"It's just with our night vision assets we will probably have the advantage in the approach and possible execution should we have to engage."

Jimmy seemed to consider that, then nodded.

"Go.  We will start our way down as well.  Take the more direct beach route, and you might be able to meet the boat closer than the drop off.. just around that bend."

Via radio, an RV point with the boat was established.

"Da, Proyectnik comrade. Good luck." He unslung his Dragunov and, nodding to the others in the team, started off. Soon he disappeared into the forest.

With that, Filat was gone.

Now the team needed to find a place to lay-up until nightfall. As well, a plan for the route in, order of march, contingencies in case they were detected.

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

Jimmy pulls out the map, well away from the ridgeline.

"Let's take the easiest looking route down out of direct observation and go as far as we can that we have cover.  We will take a break and wait for a chance before we go...."

He pauses, then nods.

"We can always ask the guys on the boat to provide a distraction."

OOC:  Looked like there was a way down somewhere around that campsite that would keep eyes off us?

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

In reply to James (Jimmy) Gerrold MacGuire (msg # 63):

The thick forest provided cover for them to climb down until they were on (or just above) the beach. But the spit was devoid of most cover except an impressive collection of driftwood, including entire trees uprooted and then carried down the river and then left to bleach white in the sun and salt wind.

It was possible to low-crawl through the immense tangle of deadwood along the spit, but it would take a lot of time!

And Capt'n Kim points out. "All that dry driftwood would or could slow an advance or split it up. If only we had something to light it up" He says with a grin

They could see there was still a narrow strip of clear beach on both sides of the spit. The driftwood formed a kind of spine down the middle.

So an explosion could spread it out? Or is it just a choke point?
