In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

They were on the beach, 6km from their target. It was obvious that if they fought their way through the dense forest it would take them all day to reach their destination.

An alternative was to use the seashore. The tide had gone out, leaving a flat expanse of sand and dark volcanic rock. High tide was marked by a line of weathered driftwood tree trunks, massive and bleached white by the sun. Above that was a densely forested low cliff or bank, with the treeline down at the high tide mark.

They had maps, but only prewar ones. Still, it seemed like their choice of route would be either completely through the forest, along the beach where they would still be out of sight to their destination until the last 2000 metres or so. Or some combination of the two.

Tim looked at the cliff and then the beach "Either way is exposing us to prime ambush territory, we walk the beach and we won't be able to either scale the cliff or cross the drift wood piles before being cut down and I don't think we will be able to walk between the tree line and the drift wood piles for any sort of distance. That leaves use to traverse the treeline which will probably be as much of a pain in the arse as crossing overland."

"And if they have bothered to have a watch this route will be what they have eyes on. If we don't have a problem time wise I would play it safe and go overland."

In reply to Tim Charles White (msg # 4):

Captain Kim could see there was still a smudge of dark smoke somewhere around James Island.

The water was at low tide, exposing a hard-packed mud or slab stone surface. The driftwood littering the high tide mark would provide excellent cover at least in places; not just pieces of wood or branches but massive tree trunks weathered smooth by water and bleached in the sun.

PD Note: I thought I would clarify it's not a soft sand beach nor shifting barnacle-encrusted rocks but a firm relatively smooth surface. There are many small pools of water and of course mats of algae, seaweed and kelp. Easy to walk on, at least here. And the driftwood would probably make excellent cover, at least in places, as there are massive tree trunks, not just a littler of small pieces (although those carpet the ground between the trunks.)

1330 Hours

As they managed to get a little closer in before hitting the beach, they had about 6km of forest to traverse. If they walked a normal pace it would be about 2.5 hours to reach the vicinity of La Push and James Island. They could push their pace to reach it earlier or move more cautiously.

PD Note: Set your pace. Normal is taking some care while setting an efficient pace. Double Time is self-explanatory. Searching would be exercising extra care, looking for ambush or anything else interesting, Movement Under Cover is taking maximum care to avoid being seen.

They climbed up the steeply forested slopes and set a south-east course. Once that was done Filat and Elliot were sent forward to act as scouts. Filat was unable to locate a game or other trail so they were forced to trudge through the woods. They were surrounded by massive Douglas fir trees and moss-covered boulders. There was little underbrush in the west coast climax rain forest. A diffuse green light surrounded them under the canopy and the overall terrain was uneven, broken with deep ravines and boulder-strewn hills.

It became apparent to Captain Kim after an hour or so that they were maybe straying a little east of their chosen course. But as they were using old maps it was difficult to tell. After a few hours hiking, when they should have been reaching the cliffs above the mouth of the Quillayute River at the site of what had been the town of La Push, they instead reached a the edge of a long downhill slope. At the foot lay what sounded like a small river flowing northeast-southwest in a valley through the hilly forest.

They were at the top of a steep boulder-strewn hillside, peering out from under the trees at the canopy ahead to the east. He could hear and partially see through the trees below (using his telescopic sight) there was a small river running north-south trough the forest. Where they were they were concealed by the rocky terrain and mossy boulders around them, while not "skylined" because of the trees behind them.

Although this was normal to him, to the recently deployed (unfrozen) personnel there was a noticeable abundance of life, primarily with respect to birds, insects, small and large mammals. On a few different occasions so far they'd come across medium-large herds of deer. Some moved away when startled, others continued to feed but watch them, warily.

Jimmy pulls out his map and compass, as well as his binoculars and starts the process of orienting himself.  He knows about where they should be... so this may take a little time.

"Take ten, everyone, while I look around.  Anyone else with optics that can spot something, please do so."

He looks for a while, looks at his map.

"OK, let's head back towards the beach on the high ground, and I want eyes on below.  We want to come back down wherever about this picnic area was with the parking.  I would much rather move exposed on that sand spur if it still exists, on foot or boat, then ford a big river and move across former reservation land and the town.. especially if there might still be people."

He points back west to the mouth of the river on his map, then will start moving that way, trying to get a view from up high on their target area now and then.. through the foliage.

Trees towered above them as they made their way through the moss-covered boulders. There was almost a complete lack of underbrush save for a few ferns and other shade-dwelling plants.

The team made it safely across the half-click to the side of the bluffs facing the ocean. From inside the tree line they could see James Island. The Mouth of the Quillayute river had widened considerably, halfway obliterating the artificial sand bar on the north side that had been placed there by US Army Corps of Engineers back in the 1960's.

Filip and Elliot crept closer to the edge of the bluff. They could see the ocean and sky through the trees.

Looking out, they could see they were at the Southwest corner of the bluff, looking out over the mouth of the Quillayute river below, and James Island. The source of the smoke was clear, and it did not look good. There was an ancient rusted tramp freighter anchored to the south of James Island. Black smoke from coal or oil drifted up from its smokestack. At this range details were difficult to make out but it looked like there were at least a dozen crew on board. There were boarding nets lowered over the side and some of the derricks were empty, indicating that small craft had been launched.

The thick forest provided cover for them to climb down until they were on (or just above) the beach. But the spit was devoid of most cover except an impressive collection of driftwood, including entire trees uprooted and then carried down the river and then left to bleach white in the sun and salt wind.

It was possible to low-crawl through the immense tangle of deadwood along the spit, but it would take a lot of time!

The spit is several hundred metres long so its a choke point in and of itself. You could use enough C4 to clear an area, loudly, but then you run the risk of digging a crater so deep the spit itself is severed.

The beach widened at the bottom of the bluff, and a wide area was covered by a great deal of accumulated driftwood. It would be possible to low-crawl and then lie prone among the driftwood. But the forest came up to the edge of the beach and that would provide much better cover.

Also, it looked like the driftwood got a lot more sparse on the spit past Little James Island.

The slowly approaching men looked bored but wary. These were not simple maritime travellers, but soldiers or mercenaries. No vests or helmets, but boonie hats and beards. They were dressed in old, worn camouflage fatigues, with webbing festooned with ammo pouches, grenades and knives. For guns they both had holstered pistols. One carried a well-worn AK-47, possibly predating the war but it might be a copy. Only examination would tell. But, somewhat alarmingly, the other was armed with a fairly new-looking Stoner M22 rifle. They both wandered closer, following the sandbar. There was quiet except for the wind in the trees above them and the waves lapping on the beach.

Some had been sold in the Netherlands. But this one looked relatively new.

They picked their way along the sandbar, coming closer, stepping over driftwood and keeping a close eye out.

Jimmy readies his weapon and waits for them to get nice and close before opting to engage in conversation.  He decided that presenting the men with a target would be unwise.  They may be some sort of local militia, or otherwise halfway decent folk.  He didn't want to kill for no reason.

When he does speak he will be using manipulative words (He's good at that) to try to keep them from panic.

Something like 'That's close enough.  We have you covered but just want to talk, keep the guns down and everyone walks away unharmed.'

Also, he speaks several languages (Including Russian) and he will cycle through them if they don't seem to understand.

He will issue a "Don't fire unless fired upon" protocol.. once shooting starts talking is over.

The bearded men sauntered forwards, weapons held at the ready. Their leather combat boots crunching on the shale at the high water mark of the sandy beach. All was quiet save for seagull cries and the roar of waves breaking on the sandbar and islets. They stopped about 20 metres from the treeline, studying it. It was clear this was no local militia, intelligence having confirmed there were only a few scattered Quillayute families, Amerind fishermen, in the area. One rolled and lit a cigarette while the other drank from his canteen, then they turned around and started walking back down the sandbar to either Little James Is. or James Island.

Carefully the team made their way east along the wooded foot of the bluff, between the cliff on their left and the Quillayute river on the right.

They got to where a tributary went north. They could either follow it north, climb up the bluff on the left (west) or try and cross the river to continue east. To RV with the boat they were going to need to climb the high ground, although here it seemed a lot easier to negotiate than back by the ocean.

Listening to Tim, Elliot replies, "Sink the ship- or capture it?" he asks. "They are very hostile and on our base's doorstep. Their weaponry is top notch. It's for sure they have the explosives and any big guns on the vessel."

He shrugs while keeping watch. "Maybe we just keep track of em' and call for a MARS team." He keeps his voice low as they await the Zodiac's arrival.

Lina began sending her radio traffic. Despite her being on the correct frequency she received no reply. There were a lot of mountains in the way both on the Olympic peninsula and around Puget Sound.

At this point she needed to decide if she wanted to continue broadcasting. There was a small but not zero chance the Krell on the ship had some kind of RDF equipment, even captured Project digital RDF gear. This would (probably) alert them someone was transmitting nearby and provide a reverse bearing. But they probably wouldn't be able to decypher the scrambled transmission.

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

Let's start with our resources, then.

We have ground radar, and autonav.  Our big boat is silent, and we can go in blackout.

We have claymores.  Plenty of them.  Those are detonated by wire, 1 person can detonate a bunch.

We have Armburst anti tank rockets.  Bet those will hurt the hell out of a boat.  These are great because they don't have the backblast and fumes of most other rockets, we can use them from the boat and not kill each other.  Who is good with these?  Pop those at the waterline and they are going no where.

We have demolition charges and stuff.. that takes someone skilled to use them, is anyone skilled in their use?

We also have a sniper rifle, and we have a single shot grenade launcher (means you can shoot every other round)  Some of the others of you have your own grenade launchers.. that is useful area effect stuff.

We need to find a solution the team can do.  I am thinking the boat might be able to sneak in quiet, with our radar going... we got 4 shots with rockets to disable it.  We got snipers... and maybe we can hook up claymores to a launch.. or.. to the side of our boat to repel boarders.  Grenades falling everywhere will be useful too.  If we can stop them from taking those ICBMs out, we will have time to figure out something else for later.  Likely they will radio for assistance, so this is to buy us time.

We could make a slow approach and hit 'em hard, then zoom away on a straight shot back to our home base. We don't need the Zodiac to be stealthy, and everyone stays inside the boat."

He thinks on it. "Probably don't need to prepare for boarders, either, since they'd need to already be in a boat to have any chance of physically reaching us. And who would suspect a nighttime attack from the ocean?"

Elliot's head snaps up. "We have the M174," he adds, slowly. "It's wicked fast on automatic. We can have 36 rounds of 40 millimeter dropped on that ship and the others at anchor on the shore. I can fit out one drum with all high explosives, for the rudder, and another with anti-personnel rounds. That's in addition to the four Armbrusts." He nods. "Sneak up, shoot everything we got, then split at high speed. They'll never be able to follow our boat as we're silent and able to run on autonav- total darkness."

"If there's only two of us good with the special weapons, no problem. Two of us can fire Armbrusts, and each gets off two shots, all at at the rudder. We can surely do it before there's any response from the enemy. Then the grenade launcher can open up with armor-penetrating shells to sink the boat. If any ships run at us, they get the MAG-58."

Elliot does some mental math. "Three drums come with the 174. We've got 36 more rounds in the Recon kit for the M79. That should include 12 HEDP rounds, one full drum. I can scrounge another drum of HEDP between the 174's standard load and what I pack.

That's two full drums of HEDP, 24 rounds. We can squeeze off two drums from the 174 in less than a minute. I mean, it sounds cliche' but, they'll never know what hit 'em."

The team hadn't really been close enough to examine the ship save through binoculars from several kilometers away while it was anchored off the seaward side of James Is.

But from what they saw it was a medium-sized ship. About the size of a WWII Liberty ship. If they were looking for salvage whatever they were looking for, it was pretty big. Or long.

OK, WWII Liberty ships aren't the biggest things ever, but it isn't small by any means.  Capt Kim's assessment to go after the rudder makes a lot more sense now.  I wonder if we wait until that incoming storm starts coming in we might be able to sneak close enough with the big boat to place charges.. or at least the launch?

It seemed a night raid was their best option. If there was going to be a storm that would be optimal.

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

Leaf pointed out the RV point where people could trade with the elusive "Ghost People". Before the war it was called "Ruby Beach", just south of the Hoh River and the Hoh Indian Reservation.

It was a distance of about 40km total, accounting for the fact they would need to swing out a good 12 km to avoid being seen in case the fog lifted. For now the heavy fog was holding and it seemed unlikely (although not impossible) the enemy tramp steamer had radar. The Sassy Lass could make 10 knots cruising, 12 knots (22 kph) in a hurry so it would be about a 2-hour trip there and then another 2 hours back.

PD Note: Lina can now make a Communications (Radio) roll to establish contact with base. Captain Ly can try to push the engine to make 12 knots with a Pilot Watercraft (Boats) check.

1200 hours. 8C. Partially cloudy, medium winds from SW, light fog.

The boat had a long range antenna mounted already. The lack of contact was probably due to weather and ionospheric conditions and the intervening mountain range.

They had another chance to establish contact between 1200-1300, when MORROWSAT ONE was overhead on its daily pass. It might be able to pick up and retransmit a radio signal to the ground station at KILO ALPHA on Mercer Island in Seattle, or if they could set up the SatCom gear on land (for stability) they would be able to establish comms with base for certain.

At that time they had made their detour and were nearing the RV point where they could find the "Ghost People". The heavy fog had lightened to patches hugging the ocean being blown inland

PD Note: you are about 1km off the coast south of the mouth of the Hoh river, around the point marked on the map "Ruby Beach".

In front of them was a wide grey sand beach with thick green forest 100m behind it. A few pieces of driftwood, some large tree trunks and all bleached white by the sun, littered the beach.

Jimmy and Elliot could see there were four totem poles in one spot, just inside the forest, marking a trail head.

They pulled the zodiac up onto the beach. After it was secure from rogue waves they trudged up the sand to the totem poles located just inside the thick forest, marking a trail head. There were four of them in the deep shadows cast by the surrounding trees.

On second glance Jimmy realised there were only three. The last one in line was a person, squatting down and watching them intently. It was a man wearing native clothing (wide-brimmed straw hat, fringed beaded buckskin tunic over kilt/skirt, moccasins). He had features that were part aboriginal (American Indian/Amerind), part African-American. Although he was armed with a club it was stuck in his sash and he did not seem hostile.

Those who were listening could actually hear him speak the words "green berets".

Chinook trade language (aka "Chinook Jargon" or "Chinuk Wawa") was a kind of pidgin language derived primarily from the Chinook language, plus French and a smattering of English. It had developed some time in the 19th century and spread up and down the coast from BC to Oregon and East to the Rockies before becoming almost extinct in the late 20th century before the
War. It had become so common as a multicultural trade language and even had a written form developed that was used in legal proceedings. Jimmy had studied it and was familiar with it, and was not surprised it had made a comeback after the war.

After talking with Sea Otter, Leaf replied, "he says that one of the long tubes inside the War Whale had been removed. I saw the same thing on my visit. He says they have seen many things, but do not know what these "eggs" look like.

"He says they counted at least twenty crew and forty soldiers on board the smoker. There is a contingent of a fifty workers on the island. They are being held under guard by a dozen men. There are a dozen skilled workers on the island as well that are not kept under guard."

Elliot knew from this that one of the missiles had been removed already. The missile itself was likely not operational, as the solid fuel was probably no longer viable. But it could be studied and refurbished, possibly refueled or maybe even copied.

Depending on what kind of warheads were mounted on the missiles of the unknown sub (likely an SSBN of some kind) the warheads were likely not operational either after 150 years. Whoever made them, the warheads were likely fusion bombs. The primary stage (aka the "pit", "trigger" or "core") was an atomic weapon, probably using Plutonium-239 as the fissile material. This had a very long half-life. The second stage was Lithium Deuteride, and when the primary stage detonated this solid stable material would be converted into Tritium that would be fused in a thermonuclear reaction. It was very unlikely the electronics, mechanical and explosive components of the warheads still worked. But someone with the technical know-how could certainly refurbish the remaining components into a functional thermonuclear device.

One will go to the island, one will go towards taking out the ship. We have two sets of SCUBA gear, so I'll need two volunteers. The odds of survival are not good, if we can't place the charge on the hull we may need to infiltrate the ship and blow the engines and machinery. I will go but I'm not SCUBA qualified."

There were seven empty M14 magazines that appeared to be in good shape, and six more of dubious quality (dents, worn-out springs, rust, etc.). The team had over a thousand rounds of 7.62x54mm ball, both loose in an ammo can and belted.

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

The weapons were well-cared for. Sea Otter explained they were stored in a safe dry place and cleaned periodically. They had many "black guns" (possibly M16s?) long ago before his time. But some calamity had destroyed the cache and now they were no good.

As they reloaded the remaining weapons (there were US government markings on them but nothing specific) Sea Otter outlined the defences on the island.

There was a force of 30 mercenaries from Portland housed directly on the island. They were heavily armed with prewar weapons. They guarded the camp at the hole they were using to recover the missiles. They all in theory pulled 12-hour shifts. The mercs on the camp perimeter numbered 10, two each keeping watch in four guard posts (crudely built low watch towers) located at the corners of the camp and two at the gate. There were two more manning an OP at the northwest end of the island keeping a watch on the water in that direction, plus the main path down to the beach and also to watch over the sand spit connecting the island to the mainland. A roving patrol of two that walked the perimeter, then down along the sand spit to the mainland and checked all the beaches (this was the pair they had seen the day before). There was also a kind of mercenary captain and probably a sergeant. So, 14 active guards, 14 sleeping/relaxing either day or night. Weapons seemed to be prewar "Black Guns" and "Banana guns" with one machinegun in a bunker at the main entrance. If there were other heavy weapons they were kept out of sight in the tents. There were no dogs, thankfully.

The wild cards were four of what they assumed were heavily-armed Krell "advisors" who operated two on, two off. One seemed to be the camp commander, the other three were engineers or otherwise involved in missile recovery. There were an additional six Krell advisors who seemed to be a QRF.

The camp itself was intended more to keep detainees in, not infiltrators out. Inside the perimeter (a double row of concertina wire: inner and outer with path between). Over the hole was a derrick, beside that was the recovered missile (possibly a Trident or SS-N-17 "Snipe"). Additionally, the camp held 15 small tents for the mercenaries plus three for the Krell advisors (two "hooches" for sleeping and a larger command tent). There was also a supply tent, mess tent, latrines and punishment "Tiger Pit". The forty or so workers were housed in two large crude tent shelters, working sunup to sundown. There was a generator tent near the HQ tent that was kept going to provide electrical power for the lights in the camp at night and to power the radios.

One thing in their favour was that discipline had severely fallen off in the two weeks they'd been there and established a camp. Although in theory half the camp was asleep and half awake at night, the mercenaries had largely ceased night patrolling and those at the northern OP slept after dark. At night half of any given "awake" pair in the perimeter guard posts could be expected to actually be sleeping, if not both. Of the 14 or so mercenaries in theory on duty at night maybe 4-5 were actually awake. Communications were by telephone wire between fixed positions and one backpack radio in the Krell command tent, another went with foot patrols. Unfortunately of the 10 Krell, the half that were supposed to be awake at night generally were. But at least they kept to their quarters and did not wander around especially if it was raining.

The camp was 50m by 60m near the central western part of the horseshoe shaped island. There was a gate on the N side and a path there NE down to the beach. Most boats grounded on the western beach. They were constructing some kind of platform on the south side of the island where the sheer cliffs would allow them to lower large items down to a waiting watercraft. This would allow them to recover a fully intact or partially intact missile; otherwise they would need to cut it up and pack the pieces down the NW path to the shore and onto a beached boat.

Most of the island was surrounded by cliff or steep slope. The NE corner was the only one that had a more navigatable path down. Aside from the easy(er) NE path they could also probably climb the surrounding cliffs. However, there was a much easier route in, one that led into the middle of the camp. The sub was housed in a massive partly-natural cavern under the island. Once it was a series of sea caves but silting and local seismic activity over the centuries had altered the water level to where it was completely dry. Years ago natives had found a tunnel that led in at sea level. Then some kind of shaft up to the surface. It was partially filled-in at the top with soil and some rubble but it was cleared after a few days (quiet) effort. Now it leads to a wooden hatch hidden under a mat of sod and roots opened into the middle of camp not far from the hole in the roof of the cavern with the crane.

He gathers the Away Team and asks Leaf to translate for Sea Otter. "Team: Boss said our assignment was to "grease all those fuckers, release the prisoners, destroy the equipment." And, killing Krell is our priority.

"Once we climb up to the secret entrance and get safely out we form two teams. One team goes for the prisoners, three of Sea Otter's warriors, Tim and Mahlina. That's two Morrow people to use the heavier gear, if needed, to take out the guards in the towers or maybe grenade the machine gun nest. I hope we have some LAWs or Armbrust.

"Captain Kim and I will take the three other warriors and find a good spot where I can use the 40mm to drop some shells into their laps, undetected, for as long as possible. Bust some gear and drop death from above.

"I'll lob CS gas on the tents of the Krell bosses as a silent first assault. Then blow the generator, then the personnel tents. The Capt'n and warriors can take care of anything that might discover where we're lobbing shells from and ensure our exit hatch stays clear to use."

Sea Otter confirmed that his warriors wouldn't need additional melee weapons. They all possessed ancient prewar US Marine-issue Ka-Bar combat knives in good-to excellent condition. His braves were also armed with bows, which were reasonably silent.

Filat handed over his suppressed Makarov plus a spare magazine of .380 subsonic ammunition. Jimmy kicked in his personal Walther PPK, suppressor and two spare magazines of .380 subsonic ammunition. They would both be on the boat and had no need for sidearms.

Tim possessed a suppressed pistol, and El had a suppressed Mac-10.

Flash was leaving his M21, which had a suppressor, but this would only be effective at range, being more of a flash-hider than a true silencer. As well, Filat had a suppressor for his SVD but it had the same limitations as the M21.

The tomahawk was not a weapon indigenous to the Amerinds of the Pacific Northwest. Nevertheless they had become pretty much universal after the war as a weapon and tool. Apparently there was a large Amerind federation somewhere to the south that manufactured them in bulk.

"As for rockets, we have four Arbrust AT rounds. They are a little heavier than M72s, but no backblast. I'd like to keep 2 on the boat as a last-ditch weapon against the ship.

"All of us Project types have gas masks, but no spares. (The two HAZMAT suits have dust-type filters, not active charcoal gas filters). However, Filat and myself won't need gas masks on the boat so we'll kick those in."

"We have two sets of AN/PVS-5 night-vision goggles available. We'll use flares if we need to engage the ship directly. There is an An/TVS-5 thermal sight mounted on the M134 grenade launcher on the Sassy Lass."

"We have Flash's M21/starlight scope, as well as the team issue M21. Sea Otter's people may not have fired their M14s but they are apparently familiar with their controls and where a magazine goes."

Jimmy set aside a canvas satchel with ten M26A1 Fragmentation grenades and five M7A2 Smoke, plus two AN/M14 Thermite grenades.

He also set aside the two M21 rifles, plus 24 loaded 7.62x54mm magazines. A suppressed .380 Makarov and suppressed .380 Walther PPK, plus his 9mm Hi-Power and Filat's 9mm Hi-Power.

"Let's add to the bag three more thermite grenades and five CS gas. They won't have any way to beat the tear gas.

"The Capt'n and I will need three warriors, everyone else can go with Lina's group, if they feel that's best. They'll need to release the prisoners and ensure those people can get out without being shot or hung up in the wire... Might be a big job."

Elliot selects his 40mm rounds. Typical grenadier load is 12 M433 HEDP, 8 M651 CS gas, 6 Stunbag, 4 M576E2 multiple projectile, 3 Star shells (one each red, white & green), 3 White illuminating parachute flares. "There's gonna be lots of throwing. Grenades drop silently and without any muzzle flash. Gas to begin, then we boom the guard posts, then we boom the gassed-up Krell, then we smoke the area. That'll take care of the east end of the island." He nods to himself.

"Let's set that demo timer for twenty minutes, I think, as we'll plant it at the start of the operation, not at the end. Set it under the derrick, to disable the machinery. Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

They retreated kilometres into the forest to where they couldn't be heard.

There they spent the hours until dark instructing the braves in marksmanship and practicing with the rifles. The Amerind warriors picked up basic marksmanship very fast. And they already knew prewar military hand signals. Likely passed along from surviving US military personnel who were among the few refugees that reached the coast.

Leaf offered to take the bag of grenades, separating them so they would be easier to find in the darkness.

As the sun set, the Sassy Lass prepared to cast off and headed south. They would lead the Zodiac for the island assault group's transport.

Chief Sea Otter said he would take two war canoes each with ten braves and row to the island. They would land on the NW corner, scale the cliffs, then surround and attack the camp from the outside when the battle came. He asked that they leave him one of the two spare M21s equipped with a Starlight scope. He had also practiced during the day and was a decent shot, for a novice.

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

Tim was surprised at how quickly the braves had managed to pick up the basics, more due to his own inexperience in teaching such things then anything else. Thankfully the others in the group were able to pick up his slack in such things..

Tim did a final gear check for himself and the assault team they had just formed. He did his beast with some camouflage and face paint before feeling they had done all they could and it was time to just get it done. He knew the best laid plans and all was very much in play for this type of thing so it was a matter of adapting on the fly.

In reply to Tim Charles White (msg # 310):

Tim began to suspect something else was going on when the braves seemed quite familiar with camouflage paint and how to apply it correctly.

Leaf explained, "they say this knowledge has been handed down from some men who were the last guardians of the War Whale." Coming from James island, they survived the "time of darkness and sickness" that claimed the lives of many of their fellows. and came to live with the tribe then. When they died many years later then had passed along some of what they knew. Since then the people of the tribe kept watch over James Island from afar as it had been a place of great sickness and sadness during the war. During the war some kind of bioweapon had been released among the population around and near Puget Sound, killing many of the survivors after the nuclear holocaust.

Sea Otter himself had one of the Project's M21s. The magazines were in ammo pouches hanging from a set of web gear patterned on prewar Nylon rigs but made of a heavy cloth like canvas. In reply to Mahalina Rae Powell (msg # 333):

Their approach was from shore a couple miles south of James Island and the mouth of the Quillayute River. The watch post they knew about was at the NE corner of the island, overlooking the sandspit connecting it to the mainland. As well, they could control the only footpath up onto the plateau at the top of the island. The rest of the island was almost sheer cliff face.

With the help of the Autonav they made their way through the blackness. Their NVGs were almost useless due to the mix of rain and snow as they towed the two war canoes behind them. Power drain was more than normal due to the increased load but they would have plenty of battery life to spare on the Zodiac's electric motor. Fortunately the wind wasn't blowing too hard and the sea state was not excessive so this only affected their course a little. The tide was going out so that  One of the canoes swamped a little but no one went overboard and no weapons or gear was lost.

Finally at around 0400 they spotted the dark shape of James Island up ahead, a little later than expected but definitely a welcome sight.

Once they brought the canoes and the Zodiac together, Leaf spoke with Sea Otter.

"Now, James island is shaped like a horseshoe, but narrower. The two open ends point out to sea. In between was a small lagoon or bay but the water level is lower now and it's dry. He says opening for the secret passage is somewhere in there. We'll beach the Zodiac and canoes there at the mouth of where the bay used to be, pull them up on the rocks. We go in through the tunnel or opening. Sea Otter and his other warriors will climb the cliffs on the south side of the horseshoe and attack the camp from the outside once we make our move from inside.

"Sound good? Let's go in."

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

Captain Kim brought the Zodiac in to beach on the rocky water's edge. Behind them the war canoes prepared to come ashore as well. Sea Otter in one canoe and the lead oarsman in the other had been loaned NVGs by Jimmy and Filat as they wouldn't need them on the Sassy Lass.

He brought the Zodiac into what little beach there was with a great deal of skill and finesse. There wasn't actually a real beach here, just a wave-washed verge of crushed shells and gravel-like sand covered by kelp. Mostly it was barnacle-and-seaweed encrusted small boulders large enough to break an ankle but too small to provide cover. Behind them, the two war canoes bobbed in the waves, trying to come in themselves. The lead oarsman of each were wearing borrowed NVGs as well.

The narrow rocky beach on the eastern side of the island was surmounted on both sides by high bluffs to north and south that formed a horseshoe with a shallow tidal pool between them to the west. The air was thick with the smell of salt and rotting seaweed.

PD Note: Ok, post dismounting! Maybe helping the war canoes land if you feel like it.

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

Over the hour they were in the water the sleet turned to a light snowfall. The temperature still remained just below zero.

The Zodiac beached up on the rocky shore without incident. Everyone inside disembarked, using their NVGs to navigate. Lena stumbled back but caught herself and only got her boots wet. El covered the cliffs to either side. Captain Kim caught one of the war canoes and guided it in, Tim grabbed the other. Warriors armed with M14 and M21 rifles hopped out and lifted the canoes up and out of the waves that were lapping the rocky shoreline. A few got wet as well but ignored their discomfort.

Once the boats were pulled up they would be relatively safe. It was 0411, not long after low tide. The tide was therefore just now starting to come in. They saw the lapping waves and flecks of snow in the green glow of their NVGs. They were at the westernmost part of the island, facing east. The island was horseshoe-shaped with cliffs curving around a now-dry tidal pool between the north and south "arms" or ridges. The braves began sorting themselves out to climb the northern side of the south ridge. Their way in was across or through the mostly-dry tidal pool, a hidden entrance somewhere in the cliffs to their east.

They could see that this entire area between the arms had been excavated at some point before the war. Running through the centre from the cliff in the east to the mouth of the horseshoe in the west was a giant slab of cracked barnacle-encrusted and seaweed-festooned-concrete a dozen or more metres wide and probably about 200 metres long. Where it wasn't cracked it was jumbled. Rusted rebar jutted out of the chunks of barnacle-encrusted concrete. During high tide the huge slab would now be underwater. Obviously, before the war someone had excavated the "lagoon" (as it would be at that time) between the north and south cliffs. They had then laid down a wide concrete path or guide-way from the cliff in the east to the ocean in the west. It almost looked like the remains of a boat ramp, although it was only very gradually sloped from the west up to the cliff to the east. Due to seismic activity some time in the past the island was now higher out of the water than it used to be, leaving this long concrete slab dry during low tides where at one point it was always submerged.

Running down each side of the long concrete slab were a two sets of badly rusted steel rails of some kind, one on either side. They ran from just short of the ocean entry in the west to the cliff on the east.

Tim has seen a couple of things as he came into the island that made him apprehensive as to the current plan. The place had a lot more intact structures then he thought especially in the water. While they did not pose any threat those on the island itself would, especially as they were put in place to defend the island from the very thing they were trying to do.

In reply to Tim Charles White (msg # 344):

As a light snow fell they traversed the concrete apron, keeping between the embankments with the ancient rusting rails running parallel on either side. Cliffs towered all around them. At the inner face of the cliffs, the concrete "runway" ended in a massive jumble of rock. The inner cliff face had collapsed at some point in the past, probably due to the seismic activity that raised the entire island and made the area they were standing on above sea level. They passed by a small concrete platform jutting out of the side of the south cliffs, probably a tide monitoring station. Now permanently high and dry as the water level receded. Rusted rungs would have formed a ladder at one time.

PD Note: I neglected to mention the cracked barnacle-encrusted concrete apron is more like a long wide trough, with a low centre between embankments that sloped up to either side. The rails are on top of the banks and run parallel. It had all been excavated at some point, and at least 10m underwater at all times, not just high tide.

Indeed, it did look a bit like a sub pen of sorts. Although it was now high and dry except at the highest tide, and even then the water would now only cover the concrete apron. But if it was, it looked only big enough to house a single boomer of possibly Ohio-class size, and even at that the path in and out was extremely narrow with barely 1m to spare on each side. Either a boomer coming in would need to back out very carefully, or back in very slowly. Even then there was a significant risk of colliding with either side.

This still was not the best plan that was ever devised and Tim felt as though they were entering into a trap of their own making, but as he waited for the telltale rumble of the explosion he looked over his team and hoped with luck they might all go home.

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

The team quickly slithered through the hole in what was once a solid wall of avalanche debris. This avalanche had covered an enormous entrance (large enough to admit a submarine, anyways) that was once underwater. Then the seabed rose due to seismic activity, and further seismic activity some time after had collapsed the cliff face above it, blocking it off.

Clearly a small gap had been recently enlarged by hand by the removal of several boulders and digging out soil. It was unclear who had done this, Sea Otter's people or the Krell and their mercenaries. Tim, in the lead, checked for traps and tripwires before squeezing through the gap and found nothing.

Outside there had been enough ambient light for their NVGs to work. Once inside there was absolutely no light at all, forcing them to use their IR-filtered hand torches (flashlights) to provide enough illumination for them to work.

They found themselves at the end of a vast, long underground chamber. Beams from their flashlights played over an enormous screw and rudder looming above them. The massive submarine to which they belonged stretched away into the blackness. From the configuration of the running gear and various faded paint markings they could tell right away it was an American submarine. Likely an Ohio-class "Boomer" (SSBN).

But they couldn't see much else standing on the bottom of a dry sub pen with the hull looming above them. They were on the left side of the bottom of the dry sub pen and the sub was heeled over to starboard. Likely settling that way when the water drained away and dried up after the local sea level subsided. The dry bottom around them was lightly littered with debris (chunks of ferro-concrete from the roof, snapped mooring lines, cables, etc.) More cables/mooring lines dangled down the wall on both sides.

To their left were metal rungs of a ladder set into the wall. They lead up to the pen's deck level, 15m above them. From where they were they could pretty much see the submarine's stern looming above them and not much else.

PD Note: There is so little light that to see anything at all, you need to use your IR-filtered flashlights.

With his rifle at his shoulder and pointing towards the lip of the pen Tim lead his team to the ladder. He checked it first and then took the lead climbing up. At this point he changed for his handgun as he scanned the lip of the pen. If he was able he rolled over the top and then prone, he took a defensive position as the others scaled the ladder.

He and then Kim made it to the top of the ladder without incident. His (and everyone else's) footprints crunched and echoed in the chamber. All surfaces (including the sub itself) were covered in a layer of dust and dirt.

From their new vantage point they could see what seemed to be power cables strung across in front of them. They were connected to a dockside utility-style power box to the aft portion of the sub. Likely fed down through the engine room hatch. Some of the cables were propped to allow free access under them, some had come loose and were lying across the dock.

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

They started out up the left side, with Tim, Ethan and Captain Kim on point in an arrowhead formation. Leaf (using NVGs) followed with the effectively blind Native braves (one holding on to her, the rest forming a line holding onto the one in front) with Lina taking up the rear.

From the labels and dials, Tim surmised this was a transformer and breaker box. The now-snapped dust-caked cables were to draw power from the submarine's nuclear reactor, probably hooked up through the aft engine room hatch. When it was berthed here and not providing power for propulsion it would have more than enough electrical power to spare for its needs and that of the facility. Presumably this installation also had some kind of diesel generator but they could run everything off the sub's nuclear power plant to save fuel. (It was unlikely there was some more exotic power source installed like a shoreside reactor, RTG generator or geothermal power, otherwise they wouldn't bother hooking up the sub.) He had no idea how long the sub's nuclear fuel core would last. Years? Decades?

The sub was heeled over onto its starboard side, and they (and the transformer box) were on the port side. When the rollover happened the power cables snapped.

They also saw something interesting. Resting on the pair of small rail tracks closest to them (there was another set on the opposite side of the berth) was a small electrically-powered pony engine, the size of a forklift. Like those used for shunting rail cars, except this one could go underwater. This one had mooring lines that connected it to cleats on the port aft side of the sub. When the entrance was intact the little pony engine could roll out of the berthing cave and down into the ocean. And there was a set of identical tracks on the far side.

The sub berth was mainly a long cavern with an arched (and cracked) concrete ceiling. As they carefully trod towards the bow, somewhere admidships they came across a low prefab building-like structure abutting the left hand wall. Lined along the wall leading up to it were dozens of dust-coated body bags. In the green glow of their NVGs the building was marked with crosses and "INFIRMARY" plus other appropriate signage.

The row of body bags was lined up to their left, the bulk of the submarine to their right. In the limited light of the IR-filtered flashlights it wasn't clear if there were missile hatches and if they were open or not as the boat was heeled over away from them.

Being careful to not get too close, El realised that under the thick layer of dust the body bags closest to the infirmary were marked with "biohazard" symbols. On the far side of the infirmary were a further line of body bags. After a while the bodies presumably outstripped the supply of body bags because at a certain point bodies were just covered in hospital blankets and then plastic sheeting.

When they got to where they could see the sail they confirmed it was at least a US sub as there were auxiliary diving planes jutting out.

In reply to Elliot Charles Pendergrass (msg # 368):

Elliot remembered stories told by the descendants of survivors that Seattle and the entire Puget Sound area had been hit by a devastating plague after the war. It was thought that this was a biological weapon strike. However the timing seemed a little off because it reached pandemic proportions weeks after there were a missiles or aircraft delivery systems available to deploy it. Just another mystery of the dark days of WWIII and after.

They came abreast of the sail. The sub was heeled over at 30 degrees to starboard but they could now see the distinctive hump making this an SSBN, a ballistic-missile carrying nuclear submarine. Ohio-class. None of the launch tube doors were open. There were few markings on the rust-streaked hull. (Through NVGs they couldn't tell what colour the hull was but probably black upper and red-painted lower.) They couldn't see the vessel's name anywhere; in port it would have a kind of name plate they would mount on the bow and they would paint the hull number on the sail. Neither would be present in this sub's last patrol, a combat patrol. The upper hull and concrete deck all around them was spattered with bird droppings.

Coming to the front of the hull, they stopped and consulted the locals. One of whom had apparently been here before, and found a way up into the camp, a kind of hatch. To their right was the end of the berth (now a pit) and the bow of the sub. They could see a large cargo crane at the starboard side of the hull. It was large enough to transport Trident II missiles from the massive storage racks in front of them to the missile hatches of the sub, traveling on rails that went all around the dockside area and between the towering missile storage racks. It was difficult to make out details, even with their IR flashlights and goggles. But it looked like two of the missile containers normally stored in the racks were gone. One had been removed from the racks, and then from the container, and was in pieces on the floor. One was missing, presumably this was the one in the camp.

Berthside near the bow a large barracks tent was set up. It was impossible to see inside. But just outside the door lay a crumpled figure. Details were difficult to make out due to the layer of dust but when they died they were dressed in BDUs and wearing MOPP gear, with gas mask, Kevlar helmet and vest. A rifle lay next to them.

Leaf consulted with the natives, who seemed a little spooked by the eerie silence.

"He says we need to go around the front of the War Whale. Then, I guess, climb the crane? There is another hole there. Not the one they used to get the missile out. You can reach it from the top of the crane. I have the mountain kit so we have ropes. Anyways that will lead us into the camp."

She pointed to the rusty cargo crane on the far side of the beached sub. It looked climbable. It looked like maybe there was a square hole above the crane? There was a bigger hole (from the collapsing ceiling) visible in that area, and this was how the Krell's mercenaries had gotten the one missile they had managed to recover, so far. But there was no easy way to climb up through this bigger hole as the salvagers had pulled up their winch cables for the night.

To get there they would need to go by the tent, around the bow of the sub.

They made their way around on the dock heading for the other side of the sub. There was space between the barracks-like tent on their left and the bow of the vessel on the right. They could see another corpse in a camouflage MOPP suits on the far side of the tent by the racks.

Farther to their right past the large green dust-covered tent were racks and racks of large whitish cylinders. Presumably these held Trident Sub-Launched Ballistic Missiles ready to be reloaded into the submarine. They could now see that many more of these racks (in the back) were empty than it first seemed.

At the starboard bow, they could see the sub's deck now as it was heeled over to starboard. The personnel hatches were open but the missile hatches were closed. They could also see the rusted remains of a large dockside crane, parked around halfway down the slip on the starboard side of the ship, next to the wall. It had once moved on the rails that were all around them on the floor.

While the bandits presumably had the run of the sub pen during the day, they apparently vacated it at night and returned to the camp above on the surface.

The crane seemed empty. Beside the top of the crane there was a crack in the ceiling where a massive slab of ferro-concrete had given way due to seismic effects, water damage and rust, etc. Twisted rebar hung down, some still holding chunks of concrete. Below this hole was a pile of shattered concrete and dirt.

Above this hole was the camp they were infiltrating. During the day they apparently lowered cables down to give access to crew working in the sub pen to recover or salvage the missiles. At night it looked like they pulled these up and covered the hole. Luckily they didn't seem to feel the need to place a sentry or guard in the sub pen itself at night.

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

They were soon beside the crane, under the hole. There was a partially-cleared pile of debris under the hole, and drag marks from where equipment the Krell and their forced labourers had dragged under the hole to be winched out. But that hole was not to be their entry point into the base. Right now the hole was also covered at the ground level by a tarpualin stretched across it to keep out snow and rain.

Instead, Leaf pointed at a rusty square hole in the wall near the top of the crane.

"Sea Otter's men say that is the secret entrance to the base. It's a ventilation shaft. It was plugged but they cleared it out. He says we need to use the crane to get up there, then get over to the hole. That will lead to a small shaft inside the base. The exit is camouflaged.

"We have the climbing kit, and that can be used to climb up the crane. One of the Braves can run up a line to assist in climbing?"

Their choice was to climb up the crane using the climbing kit and the assistance of the native. From there, try to get over the 2m gap separating the top of the crane from the vent shaft opening. Or else they could still just use the main ceiling hole, the one the Krell supposedly already used to winch up a Trident missile (in pieces). To get there they could use a grapnel shell fired from Elliot's 40mm grenade launcher to attach a line to the twisted rebar and concrete hanging down from the hole. But there would be a bang as the grapnel shell went off.

Climbing up a rusting pre-war crane in full gear was not as easy as it seemed.

Tim and El made it up the crane with a bit of effort. When Lina climbed up she made it look easy! They all transferred to the old vent hole with the help of the safety line.

When he got to the top, Captain Kim felt some of the metal begin to give as some ancient rivets popped out and one of the welding seams began to give away with a squeal of tortured, ancient metal! He made a grab at the safety line as the brave at the top of the crane tower made a grab at him...\

Captain Kim felt his M23 carbine's sling catching one something and it started to be pulled off. He could either grab for it and then try to recover, or grab for the offered hand now and let it go (if it was going).

PD Note: Choice time! Carbine and risk a fall or injury, or assured safety?

When the support gave away, Captain Kim fell backwards. But the sling on his carbine caught, taking his entire weight for a moment as he dangled over the concrete floor. Reaching for the outstretched hand he was able to swing back with the aid of the safety line. There was an echoing clanging sound as pieces of the crane bounced as they fell. But the crane did not collapse.

After several agonising seconds Ly regained control and stability, and the echoes died out. Thankfully sounds from inside the pit must be a regular occurrence because no one investigated the disturbance. Unfortunately, Ly discovered his carbine was now missing, probably somewhere in the debris and rubble around the base of the increasingly-unstable crane.

He could decide whether to go back down to get it or continue on. (As well, he could borrow one of the ancient M14 rifles the braves were carrying.)

As for everyone else, the ventilation shaft continued a ways horizontally (6m), then turned vertical for 4m. Leaf explained (quietly) that the braves had removed the old filtered ventilation fan unit and left a few centimeters of soil and roots. They shored it up top with some boards. Once the boards were taken down, and the mat of roots and soil was cut from underneath, they would have access to the inside of the camp.

With a bit of crawling they could reorganise themselves a bit. By the time they were ready, there was a half-hour to go.

Alpha went first. Tim, Malina and 3 warriors found themselves next to a long shrouded shape, likely a missile. On the other side were large tents, reportedly for the prisoners. Their objective was to demo the missile and warhead, clear the west guard posts, free the slave labour.

Bravo followed them out: Elliot, Kim, Leaf (armed with a bow) and 2 braves. Their objective was to destroy the HQ tent, Krell tents, east guardposts and northern entrance.

So far no alarm seemed to be raised.

With his pistol leading the way Tim moved forward to the missile warhead and then would set the charges while the rest of his team covered him. Hopefully they wont run into a roaming patrol, but the weather might cause people to stay in their tents.

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

A light snow fell in the pre-dawn blackness.

The generator quietly chugged away.

Everyone made it into position without seeing a soul.

Tim and Mahalina with Alpha group checked and found the W76 300Kt yield warhead and the salvaged missile (a Trident) under tarps just to the north of the hidden tunnel exit. The casing on the warhead looked intact. No doubt they were going to try and reverse-engineer it to make their own thermonuclear weapons. Or at least salvage the Plutonium "pit" in order to make a small fissile ("atom bomb") weapon or maybe a dirty bomb.

They had a few several options for destruction. Setting one or two of the C4 demo charges would work. But they would need to be a fair distance away to avoid being affected by the blast and debris (including a shower of radioactive Plutonium). They had timers that could give them an hour. And/or they could use a few M14 Thermite grenades: one to destroy the warhead and two to destroy the sensitive components of the missile (guidance, rocket motors). But they would need to set the grenades off by hand (not too risky) or else try to rig some kind of delayed detonation using Det-Cord and a timer.

Bravo's task (with El and Captain Kim) was to clear the eastern end of the camp. Specifically taking out the Krell tents, HQ tent, radio, generator and eastern guard posts.

There were also mercenary guards in the tents along the south side of the camp. They would be targets of opportunity.

Tim set the charges for 10 minutes and then hid them on the missile and the warhead. He synchronized them to go off at exactly the same time to give the maximum effect. Once he was finished Tim gave his surroundings another scan before they began the approach to any secondary targets.

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

The agreed plan was to eliminate any tangos encountered quietly, only going loud when the grenade group (Bravo) was in position to assault the Krell and HQ tents.

After the charges were set, Tim and Lina in Alpha moved so they could each get a clear shot on the western guard towers from 10m range allowing either small arms or Armbrusts. Their braves followed behind, ancient M-14s in hand. The guard posts would usually have one occupant but sometimes two. They could actually hear the guard in the NE post snoring loudly.

Meanwhile, Kim got into position to cover the north gate post with his grenade launcher. Leaf and El led their contingent of M-14 armed braves forward, stopping when Leaf gave a "halt" and "one Tango" signal as she peered around the side of one of the worker's tents. She quickly raised her bow, aimed, and let one arrow fly at some unseen target. She then started to reload but then re-slung her bow, gave the "move out" hand signal and led the assault group around the corner.

When El cleared the tent he could see a figure of a man sprawled on his back, arrow protruding from his throat. Spurting blood quickly stained the snow around him as he made helpless choking noises, then stopped. An old M16 on a sling lay next to him so this was obviously one of the mercs, or their Krell masters. And not a worker who'd gotten up to use the jakes.

PD Note: I could have let El smoke the guy with his MAC-10 but for once I wondered if a bow in a post-apocalypse game could actually do the job. Turns out, it can! At least in an RPG as deadly as TMP.

El will aim first, target the command center and point out sleeping tents for the warriors to target when throwing their first and second grenades. He'll communicate with Kim to ensure they are not targeting the same place. The goal is to coordinate and hit the most targets with the first round and already have the second salvo pre-determined so all the tents are attacked.

Elliot will mutter, "Death to Krell," as he triggers his first round.

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

Everyone in position, Tim let the SAW hang from its sling and a Brave handed him one of the two 1-shot M72A2 LAWs. He armed and carefully aimed it at the NW guard tower (where snoring was coming from) and made sure his backblast area was clear of friendlies. He gave the Go-Code over the radio ("TANGERINE") and triggered the rocket, which launched with a "Whump-BOOM!". Keeping a cool head he noted the rocket flew straight, the 66mm HEAT warhead obliterating the squat sandbagged platform. Behind him the mess tent collapsed.

Hearing the go-code, El was next off the mark. His 40mm HE slammed into the base of the HQ tent near the generator. It detonated and the HQ tent was shredded along with the generator. Lina fired her M203 which was aimed at the SW tower. The 40mm HE round detonated right on target and the squat tower disappeared in an orange flash and shower of sparks. Aiming his M79, Captain Kim was on target as well and the sandbagged gate post also exploded as his HE round was on target. Having prepped two M26 frag grenades, Leaf tossed both in between the Krell personnel tents. Both were on target and the tents were blown away along with their occupants. Lastly the two Braves in Bravo tossed two CS grenades each in front of the rows of tents housing the mercenary guards.

Surprise was complete as far as they could tell. No guards came pouring out of the surviving tents (the ones that remained) as tear gas fountained up in front of her. The only remaining targets they can see are the NE and SE guard posts, squat wooden sandbagged towers. However, with the generator out the camp was now in darkness.

PD Note: So far, so good! All attacks were one target. Post your next turn actions. Each turn is 2-3 seconds.

There were a lot of confused cries coming from the worker's tents.

The hootches where the Krell were bunking were collapsed with no movement under them. Likewise the HQ command tent. A fire started somewhere near where the generator was located.

Some the mercenary tents closest to the SW corner were collapsed from the 40mm HE grenade that took out the sandbagged guard tower there. The ones that were still standing along thw south perimeter of the camp were getting a dose of tear gas that was drifting SE on the NW wind.

Aside from a growing chorus of confused yelling and screaming (along the lines of "what's happening? What's going on?") there was no obvious reaction that Tim, Lina, Kim and El could determine.

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

Suddenly, the camp was consumed by pandemonium. The larger permanent-style tents ("hooches") where the Krell were quartered, along with the HQ hooch, were collapsed. The generator was on fire. If there were hostiles there they were either dead, incapacitated or hiding. The two

Using his Stoner SAW, Tim lit up the row of tents along the western side of the compound where part of the mercenary forces were sleeping. Elliot fired a 40mm HE round from his HK69A1 at the SE (bottom right) tower and the round struck the roof, detonating. It was unclear if the occupant was alive or not. Captain Kim aimed his M72 "blooper" at the NW tower (upper right) and fired a 40mm HE shell at it, but the round missed and detonated in the treetops a ways behind it, dropping several branches.

More CS gas from Lina and Leaf went off in front of the southern row of tents that were housing mercenaries. As the occupants tried to struggle out of them into the open they were hit by a heavy dose of tear gas that incapacitating them.

Over in the NE tower there must have been someone still active as a hand-launched parachute flare shot up into the sky, sputtering and then bathing the compound in red light! This light let Captain Kim see out of the corner of his eye someone in the left north gate post was up and aiming a rifle at him. Instinctively he dropped behind the cover of the partially-disassembled Trident missile to avoid the shot. Even though he was lightning-fast a bullet slammed into his upper right torso. He didn't feel any pain... yet.

Realising he was down, Leaf immediately crouched down beside him and drew her bow. "Are you hit? Are you okay? Where's the shooter?

"Hey, we need some help over here!"

The others did not have LOS on the shooter but heard a shot, likely a .308 from the sound of it.

There was another hole in his undershirt and definitely some kind of shallow wound but with only a little blood. Unless he was in shock he believed he'd only been grazed and the para-aramid fibre of his BDUs had absorbed most of the bullet's kinetic energy and changed it's trajectory. Because it was flexible armour it also still transmitted some blunt force trauma.

Meanwhile, Capt. Kim remained crouched out of sight to reload his grenade launcher. Elliot and Lina reloaded and aimed their grenade launchers at the shooter in the NW gate bunker. Although it struck its target, Elliot's 40mm HE grenade was within it's 30m arming range. It thumped into the sandbags but did not detonate. This was lucky as his team-mates, and probably himself, were in the blast and fragementation radius.

Over at the south and west end of the camp, armed men were staggering out of the tents where the mercenaries were quartered. They were coughing at the tear gas, and half-dressed, But some at least were still looking for a fight. One of them, it was hard to tell, was yelling at the others, trying to get them organised, but was having little luck due to the darkness, confusion, deafness from loud nearby explosions, and of course tear gas.

PD Note: I should mention it is a new turn. Everyone can take their actions.

Addendum: Elliot's 40mm HE grenade hit it's target within minimum arming distance and therefore could not detonate.

There was movement in the bunker they were receiving fire from near the north entrance. The shooter that was there had picked himself up and was preparing to fire. Leaf let go an arrow at the dark shape, but missed. PD note: El has an Action to take a Snap Shot with a Single burst.

The command/HQ tents showed no movement at the moment. Kim saw that if there were, the target would be well within the safety arming distance of a 40mm grenade.

Tim lit up the northern row of tents on the west side of the camp where the were mercenarlies were quartered. He cut down the man who was trying to rally the survivors.

At the southern row of tents more mercenaries crawled out into the tear gas, coughing and choking. They were holding their hands up in surrender.

Thankfully all the eighteen workers were uninjured, at least by gunfire. When the shooting started the ones that could all hit the dirt and kept out of the line of fire. A few of them who were isolated from the others seemed to be ill. A quick examination revealed possible radiation sickness.

A radio transmission from the Sassy Lass confirmed the ship the Krell arrived in along with their slave labour had been seized as well. Two Krell had been neutralised, and this matched their intelligence. The ship had suffered damage and was still floating but the damage was unverified.

At this time their instructions were to secure the salvaged warhead, their primary objective.
