Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

Suddenly, the camp was consumed by pandemonium. The larger permanent-style tents ("hooches") where the Krell were quartered, along with the HQ hooch, were collapsed. The generator was on fire. If there were hostiles there they were either dead, incapacitated or hiding. The two

Using his Stoner SAW, Tim lit up the row of tents along the western side of the compound where part of the mercenary forces were sleeping. Elliot fired a 40mm HE round from his HK69A1 at the SE (bottom right) tower and the round struck the roof, detonating. It was unclear if the occupant was alive or not. Captain Kim aimed his M72 "blooper" at the NW tower (upper right) and fired a 40mm HE shell at it, but the round missed and detonated in the treetops a ways behind it, dropping several branches.

More CS gas from Lina and Leaf went off in front of the southern row of tents that were housing mercenaries. As the occupants tried to struggle out of them into the open they were hit by a heavy dose of tear gas that incapacitating them.

Over in the NE tower there must have been someone still active as a hand-launched parachute flare shot up into the sky, sputtering and then bathing the compound in red light! This light let Captain Kim see out of the corner of his eye someone in the left north gate post was up and aiming a rifle at him. Instinctively he dropped behind the cover of the partially-disassembled Trident missile to avoid the shot. Even though he was lightning-fast a bullet slammed into his upper right torso. He didn't feel any pain... yet.

Realising he was down, Leaf immediately crouched down beside him and drew her bow. "Are you hit? Are you okay? Where's the shooter?

"Hey, we need some help over here!"

The others did not have LOS on the shooter but heard a shot, likely a .308 from the sound of it.

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

In reply to Captain Ly Cong Kim (msg # 419):

It felt like someone had punched him hard below his collarbone. When he probed the area he found a bullet hole in his Resistweave BDUs. There was another hole in his undershirt and definitely some kind of shallow wound but with only a little blood. Unless he was in shock he believed he'd only been grazed and the para-aramid fibre of his BDUs had absorbed most of the bullet's kinetic energy and changed it's trajectory. Because it was flexible armour it also still transmitted some blunt force trauma.

PD's Note: This takes 2 Actions. He takes 3 SP, 3 BP.

Elliot spun around and in the green glow of his NVGs caught sight of a man in the sandbagged position to the left of the north entry crouched low and aiming a rifle. He could either reload his grenade launcher, or drop/holster it and then bring up his MAC-10.

Tim concentrated his fire onto the tower where the flare was fired from. Taking a knee he fired several bursts peppered the structure as he looked to concentrate his fire onto the guy with the flare gun.

Tim moved up to behind the recovered Trident missile container. He rested his SAW on the metal surface and began spraying the NE guard tower, suppressing whoever was in there and put up the para-flare. Spent shells and disintegrating links clattered and rang off the missile casing.

Meanwhile, Capt. Kim remained crouched out of sight to reload his grenade launcher. Elliot and Lina reloaded and aimed their grenade launchers at the shooter in the NW gate bunker. Not wasting time, the man there aimed at Elliot and fired 2 shots, hoping to nail him before he got blown to smithereens! Both bullets missed, whizzing by Elliot's head.

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

In reply to Elliot Charles Pendergrass (msg # 428):

Although it struck its target, Elliot's 40mm HE grenade was within it's 30m arming range. It thumped into the sandbags but did not detonate. This was lucky as his team-mates, and probably himself, were in the blast and fragementation radius.

Over at the south and west end of the camp, armed men were staggering out of the tents where the mercenaries were quartered. They were coughing at the tear gas, and half-dressed, But some at least were still looking for a fight. One of them, it was hard to tell, was yelling at the others, trying to get them organised, but was having little luck due to the darkness, confusion, deafness from loud nearby explosions, and of course tear gas.

PD Note: I should mention it is a new turn. Everyone can take their actions.

Addendum: Elliot's 40mm HE grenade hit it's target within minimum arming distance and therefore could not detonate.

If Tim had a view of the men leaving the tents he would start putting bursts their way, starting with the guy yelling. He would start looking for targets of opportunity to try and keep the momentum up as he moves his squad further into the camp.

Elliot switches to his sub machine gun and looks for targets of opportunity. He follows the plan and if that includes following Tim, that's where he goes.

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

There was movement in the bunker they were receiving fire from near the north entrance. The shooter that was there had picked himself up and was preparing to fire. Leaf let go an arrow at the dark shape, but missed. PD note: El has an Action to take a Snap Shot with a Single burst.

The command/HQ tents showed no movement at the moment. Kim saw that if there were, the target would be well within the safety arming distance of a 40mm grenade.

Tim lit up the northern row of tents on the west side of the camp where the were mercenarlies were quartered. He cut down the man who was trying to rally the survivors.

At the southern row of tents more mercenaries crawled out into the tear gas, coughing and choking. They were holding their hands up in surrender.

PD Note: El gets a chance to take out that shooter. Then the shooter takes his action. Then we start a new turn.

Elliot's MAC-10 kicked into his shoulder as he fired a quick burst at the emerging shape. This drops the shooter in the sandbagged fighting position at the north gate, his M14 rifle slipping out of his lifeless hands as he slumped down.

From the sandbagged tower platform came a call, "I surrender! Don't shoot!"

After that it was like a flood gate had burst. Calls of surrender came from the tents where the mercenaries were quartered.

Above them, the hand-fired para-flare burned redly illuminating the camp.

"Alright, come out with your hands up. Anyone not complying will be shot." Tim would start breaking up the squads into teams of three for bringing the prisoners into the center of the compound and then searching them.

They would also have a squad searching the compound for any stranglers. His priority is securing the fort.

In reply to Tim Charles White (msg # 438):

The rest of the surviving mercenary guards began surrendering, allowing themselves to be disarmed. All the Krell (four) that had commanded them were dead or incapacitated by the many explosions directed their way.

Thankfully all the eighteen workers were uninjured, at least by gunfire. When the shooting started the ones that could all hit the dirt and kept out of the line of fire. A few of them who were isolated from the others seemed to be ill. A quick examination revealed possible radiation sickness.

A radio transmission from the Sassy Lass confirmed the ship the Krell arrived in along with their slave labour had been seized as well. Two Krell had been neutralised, and this matched their intelligence. The ship had suffered damage and was still floating but the damage was unverified.

At this time their instructions were to secure the salvaged warhead, their primary objective.

Lina helped Tim and the others secure the mercenaries and surviving Krell members.  When that was complete, she turned her attention to the slaves.  She examined each of them in turn to get a rudimentary triage started for injuries and health concerns.

-------------

OOC:  When Leaf gets time to talk, Lina will ask that she or the Braves see what is most needed and give instructions for leaving the island to a safer place.
