Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

In reply to Tim Charles White (msg # 392):

Due to the interference from the concrete and rock, Lina does hear a message at zero-hour but it is garbled. It repeats itself but again, and she thinks she may be hearing the go-code, but is unsure.

At this time the Sassy Lass would transmit the go-code ("MASCOT") once it has confirmed the demo charge went off under the Krell-chartered cargo vessel. Regardless of the effectiveness of the demo charges the Lass would either be going in to rescue the demo team, or finish off the ship if they were not successful.

Regardless of what the message contained it was time. "OK lets do this Go go...." Tim lead his team out and engaged any combatants with his suppressed pistol. Double tapping his way to their first objective if he had to.

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

In reply to Tim Charles White (msg # 395):

It was "do or die" time. The mat of carefully cut roots was thrust out of the way.

Outside it was cold and dark. There was a light snowfall blowing and a thin scrim of fresh snow had collected everywhere. There were spotlights at the corner guardposts of the camp pointed outwards and a generator could be heard, chugging away.

Alpha went first. Tim, Malina and 3 warriors found themselves next to a long shrouded shape, likely a missile. On the other side were large tents, reportedly for the prisoners. Their objective was to demo the missile and warhead, clear the west guard posts, free the slave labour.

Bravo followed them out: Elliot, Kim, Leaf (armed with a bow) and 2 braves. Their objective was to destroy the HQ tent, Krell tents, east guardposts and northern entrance.

So far no alarm seemed to be raised.

With his pistol leading the way Tim moved forward to the missile warhead and then would set the charges while the rest of his team covered him. Hopefully they wont run into a roaming patrol, but the weather might cause people to stay in their tents.

Leaf, bow in hand, seemed to be the first out the hatch.

Seeing Tim head towards the missile, she got her bearings and then turned east towards her group's targets: the eastern guard posts, HQ tent and Krell tents.

Lina followed the others up the ladder and took up the rear with her her suppressed pistol held at low ready.  When White started setting the demo charge on the missile, she directed the braves to watch in different directions as she covered the last.

Elliot ensures each of the braves has a grenade ready and then lets Leaf lead them to their targets. His grenade launcher is in his hand.

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

A light snow fell in the pre-dawn blackness.

The generator quietly chugged away.

Everyone made it into position without seeing a soul.

Tim and Mahalina with Alpha group checked and found the W76 300Kt yield warhead and the salvaged missile (a Trident) under tarps just to the north of the hidden tunnel exit. The casing on the warhead looked intact. No doubt they were going to try and reverse-engineer it to make their own thermonuclear weapons. Or at least salvage the Plutonium "pit" in order to make a small fissile ("atom bomb") weapon or maybe a dirty bomb.

They had a few several options for destruction. Setting one or two of the C4 demo charges would work. But they would need to be a fair distance away to avoid being affected by the blast and debris (including a shower of radioactive Plutonium). They had timers that could give them an hour. And/or they could use a few M14 Thermite grenades: one to destroy the warhead and two to destroy the sensitive components of the missile (guidance, rocket motors). But they would need to set the grenades off by hand (not too risky) or else try to rig some kind of delayed detonation using Det-Cord and a timer.

Bravo's task (with El and Captain Kim) was to clear the eastern end of the camp. Specifically taking out the Krell tents, HQ tent, radio, generator and eastern guard posts.

There were also mercenary guards in the tents along the south side of the camp. They would be targets of opportunity.

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

Tim set the charges for 10 minutes and then hid them on the missile and the warhead. He synchronized them to go off at exactly the same time to give the maximum effect. Once he was finished Tim gave his surroundings another scan before they began the approach to any secondary targets.

Elliot is ready to bring the bang with his grenade launcher. Each person on the team gets a different target to throw a grenade at or to shoot one toward. When the time is appropriate he leads the team in firing.

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

The agreed plan was to eliminate any tangos encountered quietly, only going loud when the grenade group (Bravo) was in position to assault the Krell and HQ tents.

After the charges were set, Tim and Lina in Alpha moved so they could each get a clear shot on the western guard towers from 10m range allowing either small arms or Armbrusts. Their braves followed behind, ancient M-14s in hand. The guard posts would usually have one occupant but sometimes two. They could actually hear the guard in the NE post snoring loudly.

Meanwhile, Kim got into position to cover the north gate post with his grenade launcher. Leaf and El led their contingent of M-14 armed braves forward, stopping when Leaf gave a "halt" and "one Tango" signal as she peered around the side of one of the worker's tents. She quickly raised her bow, aimed, and let one arrow fly at some unseen target. She then started to reload but then re-slung her bow, gave the "move out" hand signal and led the assault group around the corner.

When El cleared the tent he could see a figure of a man sprawled on his back, arrow protruding from his throat. Spurting blood quickly stained the snow around him as he made helpless choking noises, then stopped. An old M16 on a sling lay next to him so this was obviously one of the mercs, or their Krell masters. And not a worker who'd gotten up to use the jakes.

PD Note: I could have let El smoke the guy with his MAC-10 but for once I wondered if a bow in a post-apocalypse game could actually do the job. Turns out, it can! At least in an RPG as deadly as TMP.

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

El will aim first, target the command center and point out sleeping tents for the warriors to target when throwing their first and second grenades. He'll communicate with Kim to ensure they are not targeting the same place. The goal is to coordinate and hit the most targets with the first round and already have the second salvo pre-determined so all the tents are attacked.

Elliot will mutter, "Death to Krell," as he triggers his first round.

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

Everyone in position, Tim let the SAW hang from its sling and a Brave handed him one of the two 1-shot M72A2 LAWs. He armed and carefully aimed it at the NW guard tower (where snoring was coming from) and made sure his backblast area was clear of friendlies. He gave the Go-Code over the radio ("TANGERINE") and triggered the rocket, which launched with a "Whump-BOOM!". Keeping a cool head he noted the rocket flew straight, the 66mm HEAT warhead obliterating the squat sandbagged platform. Behind him the mess tent collapsed.

Hearing the go-code, El was next off the mark. His 40mm HE slammed into the base of the HQ tent near the generator. It detonated and the HQ tent was shredded along with the generator. Lina fired her M203 which was aimed at the SW tower. The 40mm HE round detonated right on target and the squat tower disappeared in an orange flash and shower of sparks. Aiming his M79, Captain Kim was on target as well and the sandbagged gate post also exploded as his HE round was on target. Having prepped two M26 frag grenades, Leaf tossed both in between the Krell personnel tents. Both were on target and the tents were blown away along with their occupants. Lastly the two Braves in Bravo tossed two CS grenades each in front of the rows of tents housing the mercenary guards.

Surprise was complete as far as they could tell. No guards came pouring out of the surviving tents (the ones that remained) as tear gas fountained up in front of her. The only remaining targets they can see are the NE and SE guard posts, squat wooden sandbagged towers. However, with the generator out the camp was now in darkness.

PD Note: So far, so good! All attacks were one target. Post your next turn actions. Each turn is 2-3 seconds.

Dropping his now used anti-tank tube Tim would take a knee as he dropped his NVG's and lead the braves to suitable cover. He looked for targets as they moved, firing on anything that presented itself.

Re: In the Shadow of the Mushroom Cloud

There were a lot of confused cries coming from the worker's tents.

The hootches where the Krell were bunking were collapsed with no movement under them. Likewise the HQ command tent. A fire started somewhere near where the generator was located.

Some the mercenary tents closest to the SW corner were collapsed from the 40mm HE grenade that took out the sandbagged guard tower there. The ones that were still standing along thw south perimeter of the camp were getting a dose of tear gas that was drifting SE on the NW wind.

Aside from a growing chorus of confused yelling and screaming (along the lines of "what's happening? What's going on?") there was no obvious reaction that Tim, Lina, Kim and El could determine.
