Example co-operative story
the co-op story is something I borrowed from another table top called the dresden files rpg. I'll post an example for it from a game I was in to help those who are having a little trouble getting it. Now it doesn't have to be exactly like this. For example the three people involved could create a brainstorming thread and then post a couple paragraph long story based on the results of their brainstorming. Anyway here it is, copy and pasted from another game. I'm leaving some of the page window menu visible to indicate the different posters. Also these guys started off fairly powerful, but it should stand as a decent example to those still trying to get how it could work.

OOC: Okay Guest star time. Sorry about the mix up. Let's see if I can set this up right.

It was almost two AM as Zeke made his way down Bourbon street. Zeke was 5'10, in his mid twenties with dark hair and green eyes. He blended in pretty well with the drunks hoping from one bar to the next. Hoping to catch one more drink before all the bars closed. Zeke Certainly felt like he needed one. He had just a few hours ago got off the boat from hell; snake cultists, a werewolf captain and worst of all Alessandra, or Allie as she called herself. A gypsy witch who tried to seduce him, well mostly succeeded was probably more accurate, and who had almost got him killed twice. It was definitely one of the longest weekends of his life and that was saying something.

Oh well, no big deal. He was in new Orleans now. The Big easy. He liked the sound of that. If the world was good he wouldn't have to deal with another gypsy for a good long while... Just then he heard something coming from down an alley. He knew he should have just kept walking, but he really couldn't help himself from following the sound and finding out what was going on. He looked around the corner behind what was obviously a dive bar and saw what looked like a young woman sprawled on the ground and two muscled thugs standing over her. Zeke's blood boiled. Even if it wasn't a woman, seeing two thugs beating the shit out of anyone would have bothered him. He couldn't leave this alone.

As he stepped out from the corner one of the two turned and walked a bit forward to face him. The other one was holding what looked like a broken wooden axe handle in one hand. Zeke's mood darkened even more. What kind of monster beats a young woman with an axe handle until it breaks. He didn't see and blood, but it was dark. Zeke continued forward until he was only a handful of feet from the first one. the second one never took his eyes of the woman, but let out a low growl. Great, lycanthropes.

"This ain't your business. Leave. Before you get hurt." the first one drawled.

"And beating women with axe handles is yours?" Zeke asked.

The first one growled "You know nothing. Now Go!" He moved forward and to emphasis his point raised his arm to give Zeke a little shove in the right direction. Now sucker punches are dirty, but so is fighting two on one. Besides only idiots pull punches when lives were on the line. so Zeke struck. darting his hand with amazing speed. Striking the first man in the throat; right below the adam's apple and just above the collar bone. The talker choked, bringing both hands up to his throat.

The second man charged. brandishing the broken axe handle with both hands. Obviously intent on breaking Zeke's skull. Wasting no time, Zeke side stepped and grabbed the talker who was starting to recover. Knocking him off balance and spun him into the path of his friends attack. As he was dropped from the force of the blow Zeke continued his spinning motion, stepped forward and rammed his elbow into the second man's jaw. He fell and didn't get up.  Huh, it was a decent hit, but I kinda expected the big man to be tougher Zeke thought to himself as he turned back to where the girl was laying.

"Are you al..." Zeke felt a chill down the back of his neck. The girl wasn't laying on the ground anymore. That's when Zeke felt small delicate hands around his should and chest in a playful, intimate, but incredible tight grip. Fast. To fast. suddenly the broken axe handle made a whole lot of sense.
"Aww shit..."

"Now is that anyway for my knight to talk?"

"Right now, yeah I think so."

"How should I reward my knight I wonder?"

"A beer would be nice..."

"No that won't do. I was thinking a kiss..."

As her impossible strong hands slowly forced Zeke's head to the side he only had one thought. "Big easy my ass...

OOc: Yep, Zeke's in a pretty tight bind. Will anyone save his dumb ass or is this the end of our hero?

Now normally one would wonder how such a large man would appear so suddenly behind the strange woman wrapped around Zeke's neck--especially since the last time we saw him was he was half asleep in a bar quite far from this location.  However the details of Timothy paying for his drinks and wandering the city looking for the good music for which it was famous and trying not to die in a pool of sweat are, to be quite frank, rather dull.  So instead we will skip all that and go right to the interesting part.

Timothy padded quietly up to the "happy couple," reached under his coat, and went for the handle of what was presumably an ornate walking stick.  What he pulled out, however, was three and a half feet of Russian steel halfway between a cavalry sabre and a katana.  Most called it a Shashka, he called his "Anya."

He aimed it an inch away from the vampire/fae/were/whatever-girl's back "Now...I'm all one for sexual freedom and feminine empowerment," he began with only a Hollywood level of Russian accenting his words, "But there is such a thing as taking it too far... he grew serious, "Now, please get off this gentleman or I will kill you."

There was an almost robotic tone in his voice. The dead cold certainty of fact and reason propelled his words like leaden bullets into her eardrums.  Whoever this guy was, he was speaking from the bad side of the uncanny valley and perhaps it would be wise to head him.

The petite red headed woman let out a discontented sigh

"Interruptions..." With the sword all but pressed into her back there was really only one thing she could do if she wanted to feed at all tonight. She tossed Zeke aside and purposefully moved into the blade. Letting it pierce her, but maneuvering so that it missed anything vital...well vital for a red court vampire anyway. Then using her incredible speed, strength and her own body as a lever; she wrenched the blade free of the newcomers grasp as she moved away.

"Oh whatever shall I do? I have to fine gentlemen fighting over me hand." She commented her accent changed to that of a dainty southern bell.

"Bitch" Zeke managed as he came to his feet. This vampire is fast, damn fast. he thought.

"One's such a charmer, but the other brought be such a nice gift." She commented as she pulled the blade out.

"It's so cute! I think I'll keep it." she added as she raised the sword into an engaurde stance.

"I know two to one isn't exactly sporting, but did you really have to arm her?" Zeke quipped. Sometimes Zeke could be a real jerk, but often making such comments helped him remain calm and gave him a sense of having at least a little control back.

he moved into a fighting stance of his own an went to draw his knife... make that to goddamn fast he added to himself as he found his knife missing.

"Looking for this?" the vampire asked bringing the knife up in her off hand.

"It's nice too." She added.

"Well, any bright ideas?" Zeke asked his savior. Clearly not liking the possibilities he saw himself.

Timothy looked to the man, then to the Vampire holding Anya, the  back to the man, "Actually...Yes."

He charged.

He was only humanly fast, so despite the surprise of the move, the vampire had time to aim the sabre right for Timothy's heart.

There was a moment of silence as the vampire ran him through. "Indian giver..." she chided, "I didn't even get the chance to play with it.

Then came the howl.

From within the cavity of Timothy's chest there came a sound like winter wind across treeless plain, hollow, cold, and hungry.  The Vampire's expression turned to horror as Timothy straightened up and pressed forward on the the blade.  "Don't. Touch. Anya." the man growled and decked her hard enough to knock her away from the sword.

The vampire landed in a crouch, snarling at the strange man.  She watched as he pulled the sword out of his chest as casually as drawing it.  The howl in his chest intensified, then slowly started to abate as the wound closed off all by itself.  "I am sorry about your knife, my friend." he called out to Zeke, "I don't think that trick will work a third time...I can try, if you like"

He fell into a sabre stance, one poised for chopping, not stabbing.  And waited for the inevitable counterattack.

Timothy might have been only humanly fast, but Zeke wasn't. As the vampire woman landed in a crouch Zeke was already laying into her with the broken axe handle. With a powerful two handed downward thrust; hoping to impale the bitch. Fast as he was though, the vampire was faster. With her injury and the surprise she couldn't completely avoid it, but she moved enough so that it didn't finish her. She lashed out with the knife from her crouched position which zeke managed to easily dodge, but the knife turned out to be just a feint as a the woman launched herself into powerful up kick that Zeke him full force in the dead center of his chest. Throwing the man back hard against a near by dumpster. The woman stood up, with the axe handle still sticking out of her. She locked eyes with Zeke filled with murderous rage.

"I was going to make you into one of my family, but now I'm just going to destroy you and everything that you've ever touched."

"I've always had a way with women..." Zeke coughed out as the air returned to his lungs. He tried to stand and faltered slightly, but managed to catch himself with a hand on the dumpster he had flown into. This will hurt like hell come morning...if I see morning. Zeke thought to himself.

She was wounded, but as dangerous as ever. It turns out that two to one actually was sporting odds for this fight. Who ever pulled out the next surprise would probably win. Zeke just hoped it was one of them and not Super Bitch the terminator over there.

A young man stands ups at the far end of the dumpster. He look maybe eighteen but something about his eyes makes him seem older like he's seen more than anyone that young should have. He's supremely dirty and his clothes, a tee shirt and jeans, are torn and faded. Several scars can stand out as lighter spots in the grime and a strange rune pulses dimly on his cheek.

Sigmund had been trying to sleep. He had just gotten into the city and with no money for a room had collapsed behind a convenient dumpster in an ally. He had even been tired enough to sleep through most of the fight however, the howling sound from Timothy's chest had woke him up and Zeke being slammed into the the dumpster, which in turn slammed into him, had pissed him off.

He looks over the scene and quickly discerns the jist of whats happening. He had heard the last of what the vampire had said and that had pissed him off more. He took it personally when some monster started threatening people. Leaning down some he grabs hold of dumpster like he's giving it a hug.

"I don't think so." He says in a cold voice and with a grunt of effort and a groan of metal he quickly lifts the dumpster up and brings it crashing down in an attempt to smash the vampire flat.

Shocked by the sudden display of brute strength from a human the vampire girl hesitates a split second before dodging, but that's all the time Zeke needs. He's battered, possibly concussed and had barely managed to stand just a moment before, but now was his only shot and he seized on it. Zeke closed his eyes for a second and summoned up his will, calling forth his arcane power. His mind firmly latched onto the woman he said "Naisg!" ethereal chains snaked up from the ground and latched around her firmly holding her in place.

"Now Ruskie!"

The big man nodded and without so much as blinking lunged forward and decapitated the vamp in one clean stroke.

Her head went flying in one direction as her body collapsed in another.

Timothy snorted and went over to clean his blade on the corpse's dress...even as it shriveled and deformed into a headless ugly monster.

"I believe the saying is, 'good riddance to bad rubbish' yes?" he said as he sheathed the strange sword.

Suddenly he remembered something and started milling around the corpse.  A moment later, "A-HA!" he rose holding up Zeke's knife, "I believe this is yours, sir." he offered the knife handle first to Zeke.

"Thanks. Believe it or not, well maybe you'd understand, this knife has more or less been my best friend for the last few years. I'd hate to loose it." Zeke replies as he take his knife and sheaths it. He then turns to look at Sig

"You look like hell, Sig. Don't tell me you're going for the bum look. That never impresses the ladies." Obviously given the conditions of Zeke and Tim who had just gotten the hell beat out of them more or less dirty and ripped clothes was probably nothing. However Zeke seemed genuinely concerned about the young man.

"Odin's beard Zeke what are you doing here?" Sigmund asks with a tired smile. "If I'd know it was you I would have just let her eat you. Who's your new friend?"

Despite his gruff response Sigmund was happy to see the man. It had been awhile and he had wondered how Zeke had been doing. The first time they had met Zeke had helped him against some uber wolves sent by his Uncle to kill him. He was glad that he could return the favor and help save his life. However, Zeke had a point. Sigmund hadn't been doing very well himself. It was nearly impossible for him to get a job let alone hold one and so he had been panhandling and doing odd jobs where ever he could. He made enough money to survive and continue his search but he could be doing a lot better.

"If you had I'd never be able to buy you that beer I promised." Zeke replies patting Sig on the back. Well at least he was in good humor. No matter how bad it gets, if you still have that you can always get through your troubles Zeke believed.

"I don't know who my other savior is, just that he's one tough bastard. hell he might not even be human. I don't think a mortal could take a sword to the chest and laugh it off. So big man, what's your name?"

There was a moment of though before the man spoke, "I am heavy weapons guy..." he said perfectly deadpan.

Silence

"Sorry...I usually get a few laughs out of that one.  Most call me "Tin Man" but anyone who helps me kill vampires may call me Tim."

He sheathed his Shashka and turned to Sigmund, "Now I believe you both have me at a disadvantage...you know each other, and you know me.  But I do not know you."

Sigmund turns to Tim and gives him a little wave but doesn't move closer to the man. "My name's Sigmund Torleif. Though most people call me Sig." If Tim might recognize the name from a story that was hot a year or so back but had faded some recently. If the new was to be believed he was a runaway and a dangerous criminal. The stories were vague on what he had done though. Still it was obvious that Sigmund was wary of Tim despite what had happened. It didn't seem to be anything personal but more like it was his default stance towards people.

Zeke held out his hand for Tim to shake "Nice to meet you Tim. Most people call me Zeke. I don't know about tin, but you certainly have brass ones. I would like to buy you a drink sometime as a way of saying thanks and that'd be two for you sig... once you turn twenty-one." Then he heard a moan come from behind him. It seemed one of the two thugs was beginning to stir.
