And so it begins
The festival was near, only a little over a week away, and the city was abuzz with excitement. Tradesman seemed to fill the streets as they scurried about in a rush to complete their projects in time for the opening ceremony. Those who had purchased retail licenses where having stalls built in their assigned locations as shop keepers, tavern owners and more had new signs made, decorations placed shops repainted and a myriad of other little additions and touch ups. And of course there was the Grand Stage being constructed in the center of the Heart of Arcadia.

In the midst of this flurry of activity, no matter where you were or what you were doing the messenger found you. He came bearing a letter to you from the Selection Board. It was about time. The selection process this year was taking much longer than usual. Although the real deadline to choose the cities champions wasn't until the opening ceremony, usually they are chosen well in advance. You went through the interviews, demonstrations and the little tests well over a month ago. Their decision was well over due.

The letter simply stated that if you still wished to compete as one of Arcadia's champions in the upcoming tournament than you should be at town hall on The Divide no later than 3'rd bell in the afternoon.

Ok we're going to do a little time hopping here. We'll start here and after this little event we will be jumping to the opening ceremony. Post how you want to respond. Do you want to head straight over? Do you want to look for a couple of the other PC's and head there as a group. Or do anything else. Assume that you have at least an hour, maybe two, before you have to leave.

Re: And so it begins
Aden Bero sat in a small room in the Temple of Many Mysteries.  It's walls were a twisting wild swirl of reds, oranges, yellows, and less so of black, grey, and white, and it resembled something like a kaleidoscope of fires, some gentle and flickering, others raging like an inferno.  Incense hung heavily in the air.

His eyes were closed, but he could feel Shaleh Azaran sitting across from him.  She might be small and withered with age, but her presence was strong, and even though her eyes would be closed too, her intense aura weighed heavily on the room.  It was part of his meditation training, in fact.

She tsked, and said aloud, "Aden, I can feel your thoughts wandering, lad. Focus!"

"I'm trying! he growled back, an unintentional edge in his voice.

They both opened their eyes simultaneously, knowing the exercise was over.  He'd lost his calm, and they wouldn't start again until he could cool down.  Not an easy thing for a hot-headed oracle of Flame.  Shaleh claimed that it was a misconception that oracles of Flame found their true power in rage and chaos, like a wild fire out of control.  True, anger and passion could do much to stoke conjured fire, but until he could keep a calm head no matter the circumstances, he'd never be able to control his fire with true precision.

A knock came at the door, and it was a messenger, delivering Aden his acceptance from the Selection Board for the novice tournament, and the young man gave a cry of triumph, shared a hug with Shaleh as she congratulated him with a smile, and he was out the door and out of the temple in a flash, geared up and running towards the Drunken Monkey to brag to his friends and see if any of them were as lucky!

When he arrived at the Drunken Monkey, he looked around for any familiar faces, remembering his old friend Darien Mistweaver with a smile, and quietly uttering a prayer for the man, wherever he might be wandering now.  They'd come to Arcadia together, but Aden hadn't seen the bard since he departed months ago.

Summary: Aden starts at the Temple of Many Mysteries, working on concentration and meditation.  He gets his acceptance letter and goes to the Drunken Monkey to see his adventuring friends.  After, he will head down to The Divide to check in for the competition.

Re: And so it begins
Morien stood in an item shop. He had been looking for a Ram's Horn... but the presence of his rime covered armor and chilly aura unnerved people. It didn't help that the rumors of the Frost Lord as a bandit were driving prices up.

He had spent the past few weeks clearing up the misconception with the guards. Unfortunately, he hadn't thought to do so with the shopkeepers. He finally found one that was sturdy enough to hold up when the messenger found him. He took the letter between his plated forefinger and thumb and read it. He smiled mirthlessly as he folded up the parchment. He payed for the horn and made his way to the drunken monkey.

He wasn't going to celebrate. Instead, he was going to see who was celebrating.

Re: And so it begins
Aden sees Morien enter the Monkey and waves him over, a mischievous smile painting his handsome demeanor.  "What's up, Mr. Brain-Freeze?  That awful getup you're wearing jog your memory yet, or are you too busy 'banditting' up the country side? Yes, Aden definitely liked ragging on Morien, but the icy man knew the oracle meant little to nothing by it.

Any other day Aden would have challenged the hulking popsicle to a semi-friendly spar or some other type of competition or wager, but traditional cutting introductions out of the way, he simply continued, "Any chance you received a certain letter today?" He didn't feel the need to specify which letter, as the pair had been joking back and forth for weeks as to which of them would be accepted into the city games.

Re: And so it begins
As was often his wont when he was not on a task or mission....Dustil was drinking. And as most frequently found, he was in his favorite watering hole, The Drunken Monkey. He loved the name of. It sounded like something a Drunken Master would name a place. And when he considered what he was, he felt it most appropriate.

The messenger had little trouble finding Dustil though the monk had a little trouble understanding who the messenger was. When it became clear that yes someone was delivering a message to him, he hoped it wasn't that snide smug snarky snake from the Silver Fox once more. He was utterly surprised when he read the message and he gave out a loud rich laugh. He ordered another drink in celebration. Then he immediately slowed down. It was this afternoon?? So little notice?? He sighed and went upstairs to change his clothes hurriedly...which consisted of taking off one set of robes, cleaning up, and putting on another set of robes.

He came back downstairs and saw Morien talking with another fellow. "Ho, Morien! Well met and well-frosted I see still." He gave a smile and a small chuckle. He turned to the other man and gave a small bow since he didn't know him. "Greetings. I am Dustil Kraye."

Aden replies, a friendly grin on his face, "We've met, you drunk bastard. You got me stupid drunk with those wretched Flaming Barrel o' Monkeys, and then you drug me on some caravan out to those blasted abandoned ruins.  I know when you touched that box you got struck with idiocy, but come on, it's been weeks now."

Re: And so it begins
Dustil was silent a moment. He leaned forward, almost violating Aden's personal space, squinted his eyes very tightly and stared a for few seconds. Then he leaned back and slapped Aden on the back, with force but not hard enough to hurt. "Arden, right? I'm not a bastard, I'm an orphan! BIIIIIG difference!" He grinned widely. "I'm sobering up quite nicely I think considering I was just told an hour ago I had to appear somewhere this afternoon. RUINED my drinking plans!" His voice hardly sounded slurred...he must not have been drinking too long before the message arrived.

Re: And so it begins
Morien gave Aden a chilly smile. His eyes were twinkling though, which meant he wasn't ready to hurt anyone... yet.

He holds up the letter with one hand and orders a drink with the other. The barkeep brings his drink in a metal cup... they'd learned better than to give him glass because he kept shattering them.

He took the metal cup, holding it by the bottom as a thin layer of frost formed on the bottom. He sipped the cup of mead as he placed the letter back in the pouch at his hip.

"Hey! You know full well that wasn't me. Look, it took me WEEKS to convince the guards that it wasn't me... I really don't need to have to go around explaining it to everyone."

It was a bit of a sore spot for him... crazy people popping up claiming to be him. It made things... difficult.

He held up his frosty cup and nodded at Dustil. "Still pondering the Monkey's offer to have me serve their drinks. Seems folks like their drinks cold and I could use the extra money."

Dustil Kraye:
"Arden, right? I'm not a bastard, I'm an orphan! BIIIIIG difference!"

"I know, I know.  But that'd just be too cruel to say, especially since I'm one too."

Aden points to the two men as they reveal their acceptance into the game, shouting in celebration and calling for a round himself.  It went without saying that Andi would pass the drink to Morien when she brought it by, and perhaps give Aden a wink if his luck held.

Morien:
"Hey! You know full well that wasn't me. Look, it took me WEEKS to convince the guards that it wasn't me... I really don't need to have to go around explaining it to everyone."

Aden replied with semi-seriousness, despite his mirthful spirit, "No one around here believes that nonsense, and you know I've been helping spread the word for you." As Aden had.

"Don't worry, gentlemen!  There'll be plenty of time to partake of Morien's frosty jugs this evening as we get nice and thrown as conquerors victorious!  Those other cities will -know- Team Arcadia is the powerhouse city of the alliance!"

Morien frowned, but it was twisted into a half smile. "And so am I to be everyone's drink cooler this evening?"

He raised Aiden's now-frosty mug and spoke. It wasn't boisterous, but it was about as close as the cold-tempered man came to humor. "Don't forget to tip your beer cooler."

Thanking the messenger, she pushes her hair to the side, tucking it a bit behind her pointed ear so she can read the writing without her hair getting in the way. And reading that she is accepted if she still wants to participate, Tamalie's lips form into a large excited grin. "I can't believe it!" She says to herself.

Looking around to thank the messenger again, she can't find him in the crowd that mingles down the road in both directions. Rereading it a second time to be sure she got it right, Tamalie is quite excited, and starts running back for home. She can't wait to tell her family.

ooc-Tamalie will go to the Academy of Arcana, where she is excited to tell her family and anyone else she passes on the way. And then afterwards, she'll go directly to the town hall.

Re: And so it begins
In the drunken monkey:

"Ugh! Nun yall got respect fer the brew. Might as well serve ya piss if yer just gonna cool it." the large man behind the bar comments as a petite young blonde woman who looks more like she should be outside playing int he streets than serving drinks walks over to you carrying a tray of ales.

"Oh quit it. let them enjoy their drinks however they want. Plus if ya stopped harassing the customers maybe we'd have more."

The big man just snorted and went back to cleaning glasses. Felece handed each of you one of the ales.

"Compliments of the gentleman in the corner." she commented and pointed to him.

It was an old man who frequented the monkey whenever the river was to busy to do any fishing. He raised his glass "Good luck and knock 'em dead."

"yes congratulations and make us proud." Felece added with a smile before walking away to take another customer his order.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Meanwhile across town...

Tamalie rushed home only to find no one there. She new her father was on out on "business" which usually meant he was either hunting something or just sick of city life and needed a breather. Funny how often the two seemed to coincide. She soon realized that her mother was probably teaching a class on proper summoning and binding techniques. Who knows what her siblings were up to. Tamalie could probably catch the last half of her mothers class and speak with her mother afterwards.

Aden looked at Morien, in reference to the tip, replying, "I've already told you, next time you get served a plate of lukewarm food, I'll be there to heat it up. Play to your strengths and quit your crying."

After the exchange with the bartender and Felece, Aden raises a glass to their newest patron, the man sitting in the corner, giving an appreciative nod for the round.  He had every intention of making the citizens of Arcadia proud.

Re: And so it begins
And that is when the big man William came into the drunken monkey. he was always someone that was hard to find in a town as he was always moving about the markets stall to stall taking down information on needs and goods that would be in high demand given a good few days time. You never knew when you could start up serious and honest supply lines.

He made his way in and sat down propping his cane on the wall. Served him well and could be a short staff to some people. Still, he held a hand up in greeting and said simply, "Cheers."

In response to the barkeep, Morien wrapped his metal cup in his hands, freezing half of the contents inside before drinking what liquid remained inside. "I don't think you've ever tried any of your brew chilled, old man. It cools the insides on a hot day."

Morien raised his glass to the man in the corner. It had taken him some time but he had grown rather fond of the people here, including the barkeep. Aden had been rubbing off on him a bit. He couldn't pull off a joke as well as the little hothead could as everyone tended to take him seriously at all times... likely a byproduct of his attitude, he mused.

Still, he had grown to like this place quite a lot.

Grig wandered the slums, his purse a bit lighter now and some of his... appropriated items having found their way into the hands of the less fortunate.

He turned a corner and stopped as a well dressed man approached him.

"Grig?" he asked, looking down his nose at the black leather clad Goblin.

Grig dropped his hands to his sides. "Grig do nothing, see nothing, smell nothing. Grig not do whatever you think."

The messenger sighed and handed Grig a note. "This is for you."

Once Grig had taken the note the messenger headed away with all haste, wanting to remove himself from the area as quickly as possible.

Grig chuckled to himself and slipped the money pouch into his pocket. This promised to be a decent day. He opened the note and read it, a smile spreading across his face. This could be interesting.

He slipped out of the slums and made his way to the Drunken Monkey.
