End Game
The Shadow beast shrinks and grows, writhes, folds in on itself, erupts outwards, stretches, shoots out tendrils, re-absorbs then, convulses, pulsates, shivers and slams itself against the walls. Trying to...well you have no idea. It doesn't even really seem to have a real form and it not following any of what you thought to be universal natural laws. While it does whatever it is doing. It emits a bloodcurdling screech that has after-tones of a scream. These spasms and other what you can only call movements because it meets the definition by the barest possible meaning of the word; kept you from preventing the seeming mastermind and his accomplice from escaping.

While the group stares at the 'creature', and all of you hesitate to call it such in fact just looking at it for a while seems to give you a slight headache, the groups notices the sword that the mastermind had pulled free is no longer laying on the ground. Instead it it surrounding by a nimbus of light while hovering three feet above the ground. Inside that nimbus the group can see the vague shape of some sort of person. This radiant specter approaches the group and as it seemingly glides across the floor the group can hear a voice in their heads.

"So the beast has finally broken free and we have failed. Only magic or a weapon blessed by a god of light can harm Shade King of Oblivion. You would be wise to flee and save yourselves. But if you have courage enough to face this monstrosity then I will use the last of my and my fellow paladin's essence and bestow upon one of you with a pure heart the legendary holy sword Durandel. Know that to wield it means a life of service; one dedicated to righteousness."

Whatever the mind-numbing, confusing and irrational shadow thing has been doing seems to be nearing it's end. You know that now is your last chance to say your last prayer, make a last second preparation or flee for your life.

End Game

Fleeing never entered Safia's thoughts, despite the odds stacked against them all. After everything they'd witnessed, all the carnage and tortured, lost souls, she felt an odd sense of calm in facing down a beast named the Shade King of Oblivion. It wasn't without fear, but the calm washed over her when she felt all of her wrath, anguish, and guilt over Jace and Hewitt coalesce in the knowledge that it was kill or be killed. Though it was a simple decision, it was everything, to stand and be the champion of hope and humanity. To never say die. To do the only thing that she could for those she'd lost. Live, so that they would never be forgotten.

"I, too, have the courage you seek." Safia pulled her gaze from the shifting mass of Oblivion and looked to the sword hovering in light. She knelt before it and her voice rang with conviction. "Right now, in this very moment, my heart is pure and righteous in my dedication, my vow to uphold the very essence of Durandel's light and mighty power that is blessed upon it. On this day, I will be strong and take up the Holy Sword, so that I can take a stand against evil's schemes and visit holy wrath upon the dark forces of evil for so long as I live.  Should you bestow this honor upon me, I will do everything within my power and those granted upon me to vanquish this ancient dark terror, the Shade King, into an oblivion of light."

Big words, big heart. Courage in spades.

And enough hope to do as she vowed; use everything within her power to conquer evil.

Or die trying.

Re: End Game
Dustil watched a bit in horror as the...thing...moved and undulated around in wholly unnatural ways. His lip curled back and he grimaced even as he reached for his flask. He took a long pull on it, swallowing hard and then shaking his head vigorously.

He steeled his resolve and narrowed his eyes. He waved a dismissive hand at the sword but replied, "Dunno if it's courage or stupidity." He shook his head. "I ain't pure an' I don't really swing swords, plus I already got commitments...but that thing needs t'be put down, or kicked outta our world or somethin'!" He put away his flask and curled his hands into fists.

Re: End Game
The Light surrounding the sword Vanishes and the bastard sword falls to the ground and clatters. Then suddenly Safia's rapier is enveloped in light and a burst of radiance envelops the group. Safia's Looks down at her rapier and sees something that is not quite her rapier. The weapon is still a rapier, but it looks like the material that had made her rapier has been transformed into something else. Also the style of the rapier has changed a little bit. It is definitely longer and seems thicker, but it not heavier. The hilt's guard which had been of the classic wire guard style has changed to a fully enclosed solid basket hilt with a symbol she has never seen before emblazoned upon it and what looks like writing in a language she can't identify. Suddenly sprouting from her back are what seems to be wings made of light.

As the wings appear the party notices that their weapons, or in Dustil's case his fist wraps and amulet, also start to glow. The do not seem to transform like Safia's rapier, but they are enveloped in some sort of magic.

OOC: Sorry for the delay everyone anyway please roll initiative. Also Everyone's attacks with their weapons, or in dustil's case unarmed strikes, all count as if they are +3 weapons and they also deal an extra 1d6 radiant damage. Please note if it was unclear you all are in a large roughly round underground chamber about 20 feet tall and 30 feet in radius. The creature is Gargantuan, is in the center of the room around the closed portal, is able to change it's shape at will and seems to be made out of shadow. Though that could just be your mind trying to define something you can't comprehend so that it won't freak you out so much you can't act. Luckily it rolled low on the mind attack for it's unnatural properties so none of you frightened or confused.

Tactics may not be his strongest suit, but he wasn't completely dumb either. Lightning crackled around his fists and light emanated from them at the same time. He swung out one fist at the creature, hoping to see if he could hurt it.

Re: End Game
OOC: Round 1
Order:
Shade king
Safia
Morien
Draz'gar
Dustil

The Shade King emits that weird unearthly screeching shrill scream roar it pulls all it's mass back into one round blob spins and then unleashes a bunch of tendrils that lash against everything. Attack vs reflex 21. hits Morien, Safia, Draz'gar for 22 bludgeoning damage and 4 negative energy damage. Attack vs fort 18 hit's only Morien I believe. Dustil manages to duct under the tendrils, but everyone else gets whacked. Not only do the feel the heavy impact of the shadow tendril, but they feel an acute pain wash over them as if some of their very flesh is melting off of them. Luckily a quick check shows no melted skin, but each of you knows that whatever that feeling was it was dangerous.

Safia smiled and unfurled her wings with a thought, unhindered by the leather of her armor. In two steps she was airborne, righteousness and fury cascading her heart as she launched herself upward and flew in glowing display toward the Shade King of Oblivion.

As she approaches a tendril of shadow lashes out at her. Attack of Opportunity 17 vs safia ac is a miss but she does a barrel roll under the tendril and avoids it as she advances.

"Be gone, abomination!"

Swift as a falcon, Safia slashed the Sword of Durandel down at the dark beast with savage ferocity, as though a bolt of lightning pulled from the sky and directed by an angel's wrath. Attack roll 35 vs shade king ac is a hit. damage 25 piercing  and 3 radiant.

Morien looked down at his blade and smirked. Holy Weapons... I'd find this funny if the situation wasn't so grim.

Then hot on Safia's heels Morien Advances. he moves forward, weapon held high, as he brought it down on the incomprehensible mass of darkness. Attack 24 vs is a hit. Damage 18 slashing, 3 radiant, 7 cold

Draz'gar charges the enemy Since you, like everyone else had to move more than 5 feet to attack you cannot full attack unless you have the pounce ability or something like it. and slashes his court blade at it. Attack 19( +14 your normal attack modifier +4 from Morien's maneuver) vs ac is a miss

Dustil narrowed his eyes and moved to the side a bit and then straight at the creature, trying not to clump up with everyone else just in case. Tactics may not be his strongest suit, but he wasn't completely dumb either. Lightning crackled around his fists and light emanated from them at the same time. He swung out one fist at the creature, hoping to see if he could hurt it. Attack 20(+4 from Morien's maneuver) vs ac is a hit. Damage 12 bludgeoning, 1 electrical, 3 radiant

OOC: everyone notices that althougyh the creature doesn't seem to have any real substance they can feel it is very real. They can tell that their enhanced attacks are effective, but the hits don't feel as solid as they should given your experience. Morien notices that his cold damage didn't seem to effect it. Dustil notices that his electrical damage didn't seem to effect it. Everyone notices that the radiant damage seemed to singe the creature.

Round 2: since the shade king goes first I'll post his action now.

Enraged at the attacks the shade king makes a spear like tendril for each of you and launches it. The spear like tendril dart out faster than you  can react, but seem to miss at first. until all of you suddenly realize that you can't seem to move from the spot. You seem to be anchored or rooted in place. You can still move your arms, hips and such but you can't leave your current position. Safia, Draz'gar and Morien all notice that the creature's tendril has the "legs" of their shadows fully entangled.

The searing pain followed up by a jarring halt gave Safia the fleeting thought she'd smacked into a fiery brick wall. An involuntary groan escaped her, discomfort and frustration. She drew a breath to refocus her energy and quickly assess the situation before stabbing her rapier out at the monstrosity that is holding her.
<orange> Attacks 19 and 9 vs AC are both a miss
However not being able to freely move seems to throw off Safia's aim and the tip of her rapier can't seem to stick into the writhing mass of shadow.

Morien grimaced as he found his legs stuck to the floor. He couldn't see anything keeping him rooted and, fortunately, the creature hadn't moved during its episode. Morien swung at the beast but his new rooted position made it difficult to aim. Attack 12 vs AC is a miss And his sword cleaved only Air.

Draz'gar Screams and enters a Rage. If you can do anything else on your turn other than entering a rage let me know and I will update this later.

Dustil was able to dodge the first strike that the creature attempted on him, and barely saw out of the corner of his eye that his teammates weren't so lucky. On the other hand, he didn't seem to do nearly as much damage to the creature as his teammates did with their blows. He frowned and wished he could take another drink right about then, but shrugged it off and focused.

Unfortunately the creature stabbed each of them with one of it's tendrils or spear-like tentacles or whatever...and suddenly Dustil couldn't move. He grimaced, but at least the creature hadn't moved out of reach - so he unleashed a flurry of blows on it, this time the fist wraps glowing on his hands as well as he lashed out. Attacks 19, 27 and 21 vs AC 27 and 21 hit. 19 misses. Damage 29 bludgeoning 9 radiant

Round 3 Start

Shade king
Safia
Morien
Draz'gar
Dustil

Everyone feels this odd cold, slimy and utterly creepy sensations spread from their legs and up to their bodies. They suddenly feel totally constricted. As if a Giant python made out of overcooked noodles left to rot in a basement somewhere had wrapped itself around them. Then they are lifted into the air. The creature smashes you into the ground, before hurling each of you against the far wall.  Attack(smash) 34 vs CMD is a hit. Damage 12 bludgeoning.  Attack (hurl) 26 vs CMD is a hit on everyone but safia. Damage 8 bludgeoning   Safia manages to recover mid throw and stops herself from slamming against the wall, but the rest of you almost fall right on top of each other.

"It's attacking us through our shadows!"
Safia cried out to the others as she regained her balance and turned away from the creature to glance at each of her teammates' shadows, but what she really looked for was the shadow of tendrils, her mind set on cutting them to ribbons. and she lashes out twice with her rapier Attacks 30 and 22 vs Shade king ac are a hit Damage: 20 piercing and 1 radiant and 17 piercing and 1 radiant

Shadows once more began to creep out from the cracks in Morien's armor. However, instead of leaking out like before, they clung to him, engulfing his form entirely as he stood.

His body began to expand, growing in size. The whispering voices, which had, before been barely audiable, could now be heard with perfect clarity.

"The Frost Lord comes with wings unfurled."

Massive wings of blackness sprouted from his back as he regained his footing.

"When Darkness comes to cloak the world."

The shadows began to... "seep" back inside... not armor, but icy flesh.

"The Daemon's Bane, the Promise keen...

the Prince has now become the King!"

Where Morien had stood was now a massive demonic form, eyes glowing blue and radiating intense cold. With a massive flap of his wings, he took to the sky.

Drazgar screams in rage as he steps closer.

Dustil took a long pull from his flask - but more than just whiskey flowed past his lips and in to his body! He almost started to gag for a second, but his 'training' in being able to down even disgusting and vile liquids kept him going as he took swallow after swallow. He should have done this before, but it hadn't occurred to him. Things looked and felt a bit more on the dire side, however, so he decided to go all in.

And then he concentrated on the fist wraps on his hands. He channeled the chi energy in his body, his sense of self, and the desire to be good and heroic...and the fist wraps began to glow faintly, some even untying a bit to hang from his hands and whip around as if blow by a wind no one else felt.

Even as this happened, he began to get larger, bigger, wider - doubling in size nearly! He opened his eyes and looked at the shadowspawn creature once more.....and a fire lit in his eyes as a smile slipped on to his face. "Now...things get messy."

Round 4.

Shade king
Safia
Morien
Draz'gar
Dustil

The shade king roars once again and seems to move back a bit with a writhing, wiggling, shimmying odd kinda slide and then opens up what can only be called some sort of grotesque maw. Dark purplish black energy starts to gather in the form of a sphere inside the open maw and then it suddenly bursts outward in a 50 foot cone; catching everyone in it. The world goes pitch black as if all the light has been robbed from you for a moments and then the a cold dull ache seeps into you. This cold ache suddenly turns into a tearing burning sensation as it spreads out from your center. Attack vs reflex 15 is a miss. Damage would have been 23 so everyone takes 11 necrotic damage. Unless you have evasion. Attack vs fort 27. That hits everyone. So everyone now get's what I am now calling a Lethargy tick mark. Once you gain 3 such tick marks you gain the fatigued condition. Every 3 lethargy tick marks grants another negative status condition onto you. However everyone reacted quickly enough and managed to avoid the brunt of the blast. But each of you still feels a clinging stinging chill in your "souls".

Fighting against the pain, Safia summoned every last ounce of strength left within her to continue attacking the shade creature. Her yellow scarf billowed out behind her as she whipped around and brought her rapier slashing down, again and again, though her energy waned with the second strike. attacks 30 and 22 vs AC are a hit. Damage 20 piercing, 1 radiant and 17 piercing and 1 radiant.

Morien charged the beast in the air, bringing his blade down in a massive overhead arc onto the massive creature. Attack 23 vs AC is a hit. Damage 20 slashing and 5 radiant.

Draz'gar also slashes at the vile creature of darkness Attack 15 vs AC is a miss

Dustil, now in his much larger form, seemed like he would be slower and less agile. And he was - it just didn't seem to matter all that much. He had a glowing aura about him and the fist wraps on his hands were weaving about. Electricity crackled from the amulet around his neck as well, all of it seeping together. He lashed out in a flurry of much larger than normal blows, but didn't seem to hit quite as much or as hard as he was hoping for. Attack 19, 28, 17 vs ac 28 hits 19 and 17 miss. Damage 21 bludgeoning and 1 radiant

Fighting against the pain, Safia summoned every last ounce of strength left within her to continue attacking the shade creature. Her yellow scarf billowed out behind her as she whipped around and brought her rapier slashing down, again and again, though her energy waned with the second strike.

Round 5

Shade king
Safia
Morien
Draz'gar
Dustil

You can not only hear the unnatural things rage, but you can feel it. It is a rumbling terror that seems to shake your insides and the beast starts to seemingly collapse in on itself until it is a tiny sphere of absolutely darkness the size of a plum and then it explodes. Sending a shock wave out that washes over everyone Attack vs Reflex 18 misses Dustil, Draz'gar an Safia. Hits Morien. Morien takes the full 24 point negative energy damage. Everyone else takes 12.  Attack 26 vs Fort hits everyone. Everyone gets another Lethargy tick mark. Remember Once you get 3 Lethargy tick marks you become fatigued. Attack 20 vs CMD misses everyone. No one is pushed back. Everything goes black for a moment and then you can see once again. But the creature isn't there. You can still feel an oppressive hate emanating from somewhere in the room. So you are certain it is still here, you just can't see where...

Re: End Game

OOC: That puts Safia at a -8 HP, Ghostrider. So I'm out, unless there's some sort of healing to be had? Hold that thought...

Re: End Game
Dustil let out a growl as the thing shrank and then exploded outwards. He managed to mostly get out of the way with his superior reflexes, even in his larger form. But even as he did so he could feel like part of his life force was being drained from his body. He could feel himself growing a bit more tired. That was bad.

Then the creature just disappeared. Dustil frowned and closed his eyes, trying to listen to see if he could tell where it went...or where it was if it had turned invisible.

OOC: Evasion means the Reflex attack does no damage for Dustil.

Re: End Game
Safia and Dustil scan the room thoroughly. The lighting in the room, provided by some ever burning torches on the wall flickers a bit causing the shadows to seemingly sway and writhe. The current mood and your desperate struggle against the beast makes you briefly even think that they are alive. You can't see the beast anywhere. Something deep down is telling you it's still here somewhere. But you can't seem to find it.

You are still in combat so please post actions with that in mind.

Re: End Game

Much as she tried, Safia could not determine beyond a swaying and writhing shadow of doubt where the damnable Shade creature was, and she wasn't about to go swinging her blade about wildly at the dark. Instead, she closed her eyes, raised the glowing sword of Durandel in both hands above her head, and leaned her brow to her bracers, below the symbol emblazoned across the sword's basket hilt. Safia prayed for guidance.

Re: End Game

Faith and conviction followed swift on prayer. Letting instinct guide her, Safia struck out with the glowing blade of Durendal to unleash a powerful blast of energy stretching far and high all at once.

Morien roars in pain, looking withered and worn as he reaches into an unseen pouch around his waist and pulls out a phial, consuming it.

Re: End Game
Dustil didn't see the creature or thing anywhere. He didn't think it was 'gone' and he knew they hadn't managed to defeat it, but he couldn't sense it nearby. Maybe it was just hiding and waiting to strike. His eyes narrowed and he looked around the room, but as he did so he did something he'd never done before. He focused his internal energy a bit and held out both hands tensely. A tiny light appeared in front of his hands. Slowly, it began to grow, roughly spherical, blue energy - it started at his palm and began to grow outward a bit.

23:30, Today: Dustil Kraye rolled 19 using 1d20+14.  Perception if allowed.
