Re: Black Tide: Back to Heldenburg

Temnir is preparing a spell when Kuldar relates to those present that draugr are resistant to fire and dont need a ship to catch up with them so he decides to scrap that idea and go with a different approach. He casts a series of spells on himself and around him and readies for the approaching undead up with Captain Broadarm.

1st Round: Cast Spell 1
2nd Round: Cast Mage Hand
3rd Round: Cast Grease on the left rail of the ship from Q,11 to N,11

Re: Black Tide: Back to Heldenburg

As the crew scrambles to their positions and a handful of spells are called out by the party, the ships draw nearer and nearer. Solomon looses his blessed arrow and as it shoots through the air, it dispels the fog in a foot radius of where the arrow flies. It seems his shot is indeed blessed as it hits the captain, against all odds, and while the initial hit of the arrow doesn't seem to be all that effective, the delayed radiant blast that accompanies the arrow makes one of the captain's knees give out which causes him to stumble and grasp the wheel for support, beginning to turn the ship before he can correct the course, putting his ship a little behind the other. As the ships begin to pull up along side the Leaking Lifeboat though, the stench of the draugr becomes much more putrid and then the boarding ladders start being extended...

Initiative Order
25 Yx'raul
24 Elona
19 Solomon & Tralin
17 Draugr Captain
14 Leaking Lifeboat Crew
13 Renard
12 Felicia & Plume
11 Kuldar & Kilgur & Captain Broadarm
10 Raznik
  4 Draugr Crew
  3 Temnir

OOC: Also, assume Felicia is at the base of the mast, not in the crow's nest. Plume is still up there with his crossbow though. In addition, assume that the first set of draugr are going to be crossing the ladders on their first turn when you're thinking of targets for attacks. Captains will be on their ships for the most part and the 2nd ship will be in place to board next turn.

Solomon moves towards the center of the ship after seeing how one of the opposing ships lined up before deploying boarding ladders.  He could only assume the second ship would do the same.  Amidst the crew he does his best to inspire them and bolster their courage.  "They are already dead.  They are just too dumb to have realized it yet.  Let's knock that bit of sense into them." he calls out, as he smacks the palm of his hand with his tetsubo.

Re: Black Tide: Back to Heldenburg

Kuldar sees how this is going, and decides that now would be a good time to show off exactly how tough a Dwarf and Boar can be. He decides that mounting up on a closed space was a little silly, now attempting to hop off Kilgur as quickly as possible. "Kilgur! Set yerself in fron'a one plank, I'll get anoth'r" A loud squeal of approval met him, and the pair set off to block two entry points on this side of the ship.

Re: Black Tide: Back to Heldenburg

From his position near the stern he is able to catch most of the starboard ship in his spell, and what he sees is rather surprising.  He calls out as loud as he can so everyone can hear, "Right side has 11 undead, 10 weaker ones, 1 stronger.  And, uh.. the ship is undead too?  I assume the same applies to the other ship but be careful either way!"  For the moment he was glad he was relatively safe from the undead, but the fact that the ship was somehow undead too was bothering him.  He shrugs it off and scans the starboard ship for the stronger undead nearer to its bow, holds up his palm in that direction, mumbles a word, and fires from his palm what appears to be a ray of sunlight among the foggy gloom.

Swinging the sling in his hand, Raznik lets fly with the bullet aiming for the nearest corpse. Yx'raul looks ready to dash across but Raznik holds out this hand, before placing another bullet in his sling. "Hold Yx'raul. Attack if they board." Temnir's eyes speak of a smile as his plan comes to fruition as the spectral hand takes its place behind the captain of the first ship, grabbing ahold of the captain's torso momentarily and glowing purple before letting go. Re: Black Tide: Back to Heldenburg

Wasting no time at the controls of the scorpion, Elona finishes loading the weapon and takes careful aim at the closest pair of draugr to her and fires the massive bolt right through the unlucky undead and into the next, sending both flying into the mast where the bolt comes to rest, 2 lifeless bodies hanging off of it. Talin likewise takes his shot, aiming at the captain and the few draugr up with him but only succeeds in pegging the side of the ship which makes a large squelching voice rather than the expected metal breaking wood noise you would expect. Meanwhile, Solomon crosses the ship and attempts to give the crew a boost to their morale, "They are already dead. They are just too dumb to have realized it yet. Let's knock that bit of sense into them." It seems to have the intended effect as the few crewmen who had begun to cower a bit stood up a bit straighter and readied their weapons.

The captain of the ship that has already begun attempting to board steps away from his wheel and shuffles to the rail, raising a crossbow and firing back at the gnome, hitting him in the shoulder causing him to fall backwards clutching the shaft. The other captain lets out a loud gurgling roar and points to the Leaking Lifeboat to which the crew begin readying the boarding ladders.

With the second ship apparently not going anywhere, Renard uses vestiges of his Detect Undead spell to relay some vital information to the crew, "Right side has 11 undead, 10 weaker ones, 1 stronger.  And, uh.. the ship is undead too?  I assume the same applies to the other ship but be careful either way!" He follows up his announcement with a bright ray of light that streams from the stern of the Leaky Lifeboat all the way to the stern of the enemy ship, striking the captain in the chest, singing his clothing and burning his dead flesh. Some of the crew nod and position themselves along the railing, waiting for the draugr to cross, various weapons at the ready. Felicia, however, remains where she is, scouting out the two fronts of the impending conflict, trying to decide which side would need her skills the most as does Plume in the crow's nest above with his crossbow.

"Kilgur! Set yerself in fron'a one plank, I'll get another," Kuldar calls to his mount as he hops off the battle boar and it heads past Raznik and Yx'raul to take his place in front of the top boarding ladder, tusks ready for anyone brave enough to cross. "Hold Yx'raul. Attack if they board." Raznik commands his eidolon, a command the creature seems not to like being given and obeys grudgingly, especially with his master already using his own weapon. The bullet slung from his sling flies through the air towards the draugr opposite him though it ricochets off of one of the draugr ship's mast's guidelines and shoots into the water between the two ships. Meanwhile, Temnir continues his chain of spells and as his spectral hand materializes behind the captain of the first ship and grabs him around the torso, Temnir smiles with renewed energy and calls out to the crew much like Solomon, "They know we're on the right track and are coming to stop us! Show them we're not so easy to scare!"

Broadarm looks around to both ships, his own crew, and calls out, "You heard 'em lads! The less o' em ya let on me ship, the more o' you will reach home t' see yer loved ones! Fight fer yer lives, they damn well depend on it! Five gold pieces fer every rotten peg leg ye get off o' these sorry bastards!" The captain's bounty is met with a loud cheer from the crew as the prospect of gold outweighs many of their fears.

The draugr on the right boat take the cheering of the crew as a sign to charge and take off across the gap with speed deceptive of their decrepit and soggy demeanors, removing great axes from their backs as they go and swinging them with frightening speed at anyone in their path. Kilgur is the first to find his foe, slamming a tusk in through the draugr's calf and out through it's hip section. Yx'raul takes this moment to get into the action as well, moving forward, raising himself up, and slamming his body into the already injured draugr, raking its claws through the flesh on its back as he does so, thus scoring the first casualty of the boarding party. The other two boarding ladders find crewman versus crewman with mixed results. One crewman successfully keeps the draugr on the ladder while the other is pushed back, allowing the undead onto the ship. One of the undead accompanying the captain of the vessel takes a different approach on boarding the vessel and grabs a rope and swings onto the bow of the ship, successfully dodging both of the attacks aimed at him as he does so.

The undead vessel that just pulled up gets the fight started a bit more efficiently as one draugr drops the boarding ladder and  immediately moves out of the way for another to begin moving across, two of them uncontested, and another moving fast enough to dodge both of the slices aimed at him. Yet another swings onto the bow of the ship as well though, adding to the fronts that begin forming around the ship.

Re: Black Tide: Back to Heldenburg

Though his last attack was quite a show he couldn't help but notice that there were more of these Draugr near his end of the ship than pretty much anywhere else.  He focuses on one of the undead nasties who is in the process of crossing the boarding latter and mumbles a spell to himself, one hand gripping his chains tight as three links detach from a loose end and fly towards the Draugr.  The rounded bits of metal change shape and substance until they become bands of magical force that attempt to wrap around the Draugr and hold him fast, hopefully, in the process, preventing the other two behind him from crossing for now...

As soon as the spell no longer requires his attention he tugs on the sling of his crossbow and brings it around to the front, quickly snapping a bolt into place as he'd practiced so thoroughly.

Re: Black Tide: Back to Heldenburg

Congealed blood staining his mouth, Yx'Raul looks to his master and leaps back into action, crossing the ship and executing series of vicious slams, claws, and bites, tearing huge sections of flesh out of the undead and essentially disemboweling it though it remains standing and retaliates, raising it's greataxe above its head though the fresh injuries seem to effect it quite a lot as the strain of heaving the massive weapon overhead prove too much for it and the weapon slips from its grasp onto the deck behind it. The draugr behind it attempts to charge the eidolon, hoping to be more successful but is easily parried by the large creature. Elona skillfully pops two long hilted daggers out from her sleeves and proceeds to quickly burry them both in the draugr's eyes in front of her though that doesn't seem to deter it in the least as it swings and almost catches her arms as she drawn them back. Solomon is close to this and calls out a prayer to Pelor, "By the holy light of Pelor, reduce these undead to ash and scatter them to the sea!" as a golden light defends from the heavens onto him and explodes outward in every direction. The impressive display of faith shakes some of the nearer draugr, straight out obliterating the one who dropped his axe in a shower of golden sparks, but the others don't seem to be fully effected. However, as the wave of light washes over the draugr ship, the beating that had been persisting even now during battle, increases its speed and volume and a loud whining creak echoes out from what seems like the ship itself as it rocks back and forth, almost throwing a few of the draugr from their boarding ladders. As you look at where the light touched the boat, there are now charred burn marks. Clearly not happy with the channeling, the draugr on the railing of the Lifeboat brings his axe down hard and cuts into Solomon's shoulder, right through his plate mail. Whether being in such proximity to the foul smelling creature or the barnacle encrusted greataxe itself, a momentary wave of nausea threatens to overwhelm him before he is able to push it down.

Tralin busies himself reloading the scorpion, hoping to get another shot off at the captain if the situation permits though the act seems a bit futile with multiple draugr already on the deck of the ship with more likely about to board and in fact, the captain seems to notice his plan and reacts accordingly. Pushing the draugr pirate aside from the rope it had been grabbing, the captain grabs hold and swings himself over the the boat, unsheathing a pitch black bladed scimitar as he does so, and lands behind a pair of the crew, blade slicing through the back of both of the sailors calves and the man visibly turns pale as, though he remains upright, he looks haggard and terrified, rightly so it would seem. The captain of the other ship makes his way down to the midship railing and opens his mouth wide as a roiling mist begins to be expelled from it, obscuring everything in its path.

Fighting between opposing crews continue all over the ship and it seems that the Lifeboat's crew have done some decent damage to their undead counterparts, even going so far as to seriously wound the captain who had made his way over to their ship. At the south eastern boarding ladder, the draugr there continues to make progress, cutting down one of the sailors, sending him to his back and, though still alive, badly wounded. The man begins to scream in pain as the draugr advance. The crew member manning the middle boarding ladder suffers the same fate as one of the draugr who made it across down south moves in and strikes the man in the gut with his axe. The man next to Solomon also suffers an injury as does a crew member down to the southwest.

Renard has the presence of mind to try and halt the progress of the boarding draugr and casts a spell as three links of the chain around his neck fly off and begin to wrap around the undead creature who, much to Renard's dismay, wards them off with his weapon, leaving him free to continue his boarding process. Luckily though, a couple of other crewmen have showed up to assist the lone man who had been fending off the boarding party. Broadarm strides over and claps him on the shoulder, "Nice try lad, let me give it a go," as he looks into his coat for a moment with a indecisive look on his face he decides on the crossbow hanging from his hip, raises it, and fires at the same draugr, however he too misses. "Lightless, good for nothing, orc-wood piece of shit!" he swears, throwing the crossbow to the ground.

Kuldar keeps his encouragement up to the crew and congratulates Kilgur on his help with the kill. Seeing one of the crewmen alone against one of the draugr, he charges over to help the man, "We've got this! Focus your attacks, stand together and we win together!" Normally this would inspire the man to greatness but as he charges to the man's aid, the ship rolls a bit as a wave goes by underneath and he looses his footing and falls to the group a few feet sort of his intended destination. Kilgur lets out another squeal which you could interpret as laughter though his attempted gore misses its mark, the draugr apparently having seen his ally's fate moments before. The undead tries to counterattack but swings high and misses his blow as well.

Felicia moves with catlike grace across the deck towards Solomon, Elona, and Yx'raul, looking to get her claws dirty with the nearby draugr. Plume, still up in the crow's nest, fires off an bolt from his crossbow at the same draugr that was Renard and Broadarm's target, finally scoring a hit on the undead in the shoulder though it doesn't look like the draugr even realizes it was hit. Meanwhile at the stern of the ship, Temnir continues to concentrate while controlling his spectral hand, "Let's see how a bit of electricity works on that soaked body of yours captain..." His attack is a success and moments after the jolt of electricity surges over the captain, the draugr drops to its knees and falls over on it's side, brought to death once again.

"Ah. What fun. I love corpses, though it's better when I get to make them. Wouldn't you agree, Yx'raul?" Raznik laughs in an arrogant and somewhat mad voice and breaks down into cackling laughter as Yx'razul looks back to his master, eyes glowing with a malicious light, and roars loudly in agreement. Still prone on the ground, Kuldar gets a good look at the summoner and something seems off about him though physically he still remains exactly the same.

Re: Black Tide: Back to Heldenburg

Now that was interesting to see.  Focused as he was on the Draugr still upon the nearest boarding ladder he had a good view of the damage Solomon's channeled energy did to the ship.  At the same time he saw how one of the Draugr took down a crewman in a single blow.  He was torn between two courses of action; he could try to do more damage to the ship and possibly sink it or he could prevent the crewman's death for at least a little longer...

In the end it is the latter course of action that wins out.  "Try mine, Captain," he says as he hands his loaded crossbow over to Broadarm and moves towards the fallen crewman.  Once he's there, just outside the reach of the flailing weapons of the crewmates and Draugr, he calls down a flow of energy similar to Solomon's, this one intended for the living rather than the undead.  A plan began to form in his head and, as is always the case in chaos, his chosen course of action would reflect the results of the next few moments of the battle.

Kuldar is a little shaken by his fall, and loses concentration on his tale. The magic lingers though, and continues empowering those near him for some time yet. Kuldar picks himself up and steps closer, bringing his axe down on one of the Draugr with deadly force. Kilgur continues his assault on the Draugr of this plank, before stumbling clumsily away and standing at the base of the plank once more.

Re: Black Tide: Back to Heldenburg

Getting a better idea of the range of his blessing, Solomon moves to take further advantage of it.  He places himself between two of the boarding ladders and close to the ship's edge {N2}"May Pelor's light burn away your sins and your putrid flesh.  Return to the belly of Davey Jone's locker from which you came!"  Once again a pulse of golden energy radiates outwards in a circle centered on Solomon.  Having never witnessed an undead ship he couldn't even fathom how much damage such a thing could take before sinking to the bottom of the sea.

Re: Black Tide: Back to Heldenburg

Seeing two of the deckhands fall, Temnir crosses the deck, chanting a spell the entire time before reaching the other side of the deck and expelling a mass of webbing from his hand towards the two weakest boarding ladders, hoping to delay the progress of the boarding draugr. "Renard, time to show us what you can do. Help the crewmen!" he calls out to Renard who already seems to be moving into action.

Re: Black Tide: Back to Heldenburg

Yx'Razul continues his bloodthirsty assault, cobalt eyes shining with an intense and vicious light as he thrusts forward again landing a series of blows as well as a particularly vicious bite on the draugr's neck which causes its limbs to stiffen a bit and the greataxe seems to gain some weight in the undead's hand. Felicia, not to be left out of the fight, assists the eidolon with claws of her own, burning the draugr badly and causing it to drop to one knee, the greataxe hitting the deck with a hollow thud. Elona likewise, now back to back with the eidolon flourishes one of her blades, bringing the draugr's attention to it while she plunges the other in the side of its head, dropping it instantly. Tralin, a bit unsure of what to do, finishes loading the scorpion and begins looking around for a suitable target but none seems to be found so he keeps his vigil and keeps aiming the oversized weapon every which way.

The last remaining draugr captain is still lost in the fog for a few moments before he comes charging out of the mist, black blade identical to the other felled captain's in his hand and a murderous look in his glowing red eyes as he lets out a guttural gurgling roar to which his crew members respond to in kind. The crew of the Leaking Lifeboat, however, still under the bolstering effects of Kuldar's bardic inspiration and their killing of one of the two draugr captains are not to be deterred. Almost every group of sailors gets at least one hit in on the draugr though none are downed as of yet, they sure are getting close.

A bit in awe at the channeling prowess of Solomon, it takes Renard a moment to act but Temnir snaps him out of his distracted state, "Renard, time to show us what you can do. Help the crewmen!" Renard snaps out of it and looks to Captain Broadarm, proffering his crossbow, "Try mine, Captain." Broadarm raises an eyebrow after his fit of swearing and pushes it back on him, "N'thanks lad, I got somethin that'll do the trick a bit better I reckon," as he goes for whatever was in his coat pocket, bringing out a small forearm length of wood and metal, an odd contraption the likes of which neither Renard or Temnir have ever seen and begins to tamper with the device as Renard takes Temnir's words to heart and dashes down the stairs to the sides of the downed crewmen. He doesn't grab any holy symbol that you can see, simply raises his hand to the sky and a similar radiant beam shoots down and engulfs him. His is a bit softer if such can be said about celestial light but it shoots out in every direction in tendrils, making its way into the chests of every ally in range, closing wounds of the two near death crewmen and a few others as well as the shoulder wound Solomon had taken a few moments earlier.

Kuldar shakes the fall off and scrambles back to his feet but as he does so, the nearby Raznik continues to cackle with maddening laughter and when his eyes look at the summoner's face, an evil grin is plastered to the man's face as well as a hungry look in his eyes as he eyes the dwarf, "A dwarf. How delightful. I wonder what dwarf meat tastes like." He licks his lips and breaks down into laughter once again. Kuldar hurries himself away from the man and puts him out of his mind for the moment, bringing his axe to bear against a nearby draugr, cutting a chunk out of the undead. Kilgur also finds purchase with his follow up gore attack though as he attempts to put some distance between himself and his opponent, he gets caught by an unlucky swing of the axe, opening up a bloody wound on one of his haunches which elicits a loud squeal of pain from the boar as well as a series of heaving noises as the boar seems to turn a bit green around the eyes.

Broadarm seems to have finally figured out how to get his contraption working and pointing it at one of the crossing draugr, takes aim and pulls a small finger lever on the device and a tremendous 'BOOM!' resounds, sending Temnir jumping back in surprise and the crew members in front of him ducking involuntarily. However, whatever the device did, one of the draugr now has a large hole in its left side and its organs, or what is left of them, are quickly spilling out into the ocean.

The draugr crew seem to not be going down without a fight, no matter how many of their members are slain by the heroes. A few  more get in some hits on various crewmen, downing one into unconsciousness up north where the first captain had been slain, and missing Yx'razul, Kilgur, and Elona in turn. Seeing the advance of the draugr, Temnir regains his composure with a wary glade at Broadarm and casts his spell sending a gold of white webbing flying at the two southernmost boarding ladders successfully hindering two of the undead.

Back on the other side of the ship, Solomon grabs his holy symbol of Pelor which is still glowing radiantly with the power that had rushed through him moment before, "May Pelor's light burn away your sins and your putrid flesh. Return to the belly of Davey Jone's locker from which you came!" as another burst of the radiant golden energy rushes forth over the draugr and the ship. This time, the blast seems to have more of an effect, finishing off yet another of the draugr, the one Yx'raul and Felicia had almost killed, and burning even more of the ship. This, however, has an unforeseen effect. As the light washes over the ship, an incredibly loud and piercing shriek comes from the innards of the boat as the cargo hold doors on the deck burst open, sending splinters of wood flying every which way and ridding the area of some of the obscuring mist. Plume calls out in a panicked voice from the crow's nest, "Cap'n we got trouble over here!" Out from the depths, a huge mass of what looks like bloated fleshy organs mashed together in some horrible amalgam come surging forward onto the deck and four whip-like tentacles emerge from the mass and begin whipping at everything in sight, including the draugr unfortunate enough to stand too close. One of them is grabbed by all four limbs and torn in four different directions, his limbs then tossed into the sea as they continue to lash...

Unmindful of the strange happenings of the port-side enemy ship as it is to his back, Renard has his hands full keeping the crewmen alive and kicking.  It was time to put phase one of his plan into action.  As he mumbles the words of the spell he swings his arms out and up, almost like he is surrendering but not quite.  His fingers are splayed wide and the chains around his neck glow slightly, just as with every other spell he has cast.
