I, for one, and greatly relieved by the decision! That not being able to see each other thing always made that spell problematic...

I'm using Osric. Got a 1ed DMG somewhere the the PHB from back in the day was my brothers, and I have no idea where it might now reside!

Wow, very cool. It is possible they tweaked a few things for ease of play, or based on their home rule sets. It's up the DM of course, but I like the 'we see each other' version...

I do too, which is what I think we'll use. I just fact-checked with my wife, who is a big Harry Potter fan. When the kids were under the invisibility cloak, they were able to see one another, while invisible; however as soon as they left the cloak, they could no longer see one another. So.... because Harry Potter.

I think the caster should be able to weave the spell such that everyone can see one another. And so it shall be for our game.

Agreed and thanks! :)

I only have my good old 2e Players Handbook in hardback I'm afraid - I started late!

In reply to DM Storm (msg # 975):

Happy with the decision but disagree with the logic. The Potter cloak is a magic item covering those under it, while Saliq is using a spell that affects all within his spell radius...

...But I'm not going to argue!!!

I have 1st Ed. Handbook and DMG at home, but when I'm at work and make a post, I keep a download of OSRIC on my laptop for ease of looking things up.  While there are minor differences, it's pretty darn close and usually reliable if you just need to reference something.

In reply to Inas Eoinsson (msg # 980):

The logic was supposed to be taken tongue-in-cheek. The real rationale is a little more complicated than Harry Potter. It more has to do with what makes the spell most useful and to ensure everyone is operating off the same frame of reference.

I had a feeling not everyone had access to the 1st edition PHB, but OSRIC is freely available, so I knew everyone had that.

Out of curiosity, how many of you have access to 2nd edition PHB?

Re: OOC: Table Talk 2

Like I said I have the 2nd edition PHB (and actually a lot of 2nd edition books - I got into the hobby in the 90s). Even though I actually played very little 2nd edition since by the time I reached college the switch to 3rd edition was happening I guess I still think of 2nd edition as *my* edition. I'm lucky enough to have the Dragon Magazine Archive so I have a lot of material from 1st and 2nd edition to plunder.

I think 2nd edition does handle a couple of things better - Thieves allocating their skill points is a big one and I like Bards.  Plus some of the settings were very cool - Al Qadim anyone?

BTW I think we need to open a new OOC thread pronto!

I as well. Guess I need to download the OSRIC thingy though, as it appears to be the official source for this game.

I'm very willing to defer to the 1st edition PHB and DMG if/when a conflict come up (which since I've been playing this game for two years without a problem seems to be once in a blue moon.) :)

Anyway here is the link Ben: http://www.knights-n-knaves.com/osric/

I agree. 2nd edition is basically a cleaned-up version of 1st edition AD&D that incorporates many of the house rules that found their way into AD&D campaigns. I never played much 2nd edition though because I had drifted away from gaming when it was released (1989) and did not come back to RPGs until late 1997, when AD&D was in its twilight years. I did play 1st edition pretty regularly from 1984 to 1989 though.

I always liked the idea of Al Qadim, but never played it.

I use both. I have my tattered 1st edition books next to me anytime I am posting and a copy of OSRIC for quick reference searches when needed. They're pretty interchangeable.

At any rate you can continue using your PHB if that's what you've got. For those that only have OSRIC, use that.

Re: OOC: Table Talk 2

I think Dark Sun was the one location I most wanted to play in, and never got the chance.

I had one experience with the oriental adventures and found it fun, but I am  a bit of a fan of Japanese stuff to begin with, so that helped.

Funny story, after the adventure the DM told me and this other guy that our idea for what was really going on was better then the one in the module, but he didn't have the wherewithal to let it be true. Sigh...

I felt the Ravenloft world was poorly done, which is a shame because the original module was awesome. It is very hard to teach someone how to create a sense of suspense, even more so when so many players are smart-arse jokers. I had some luck with suspenseful DMing, but mostly when the players were new.

I played in a very brief Dark Sun campaign, but our group made the switch to Rolemaster and that was the end of that game. It seemed like a cool setting though.

We made OA characters but never really knew what to do with them and that game never went anywhere. Those characters were essentially still-born.

Ravenloft is another setting I never played, but always heard great things about. Like you mentioned, I don't think any group I have ever gamed with would have done well with a horror/suspense setting. Far too much joking and tomfoolery going on at any table I have sat at, myself definitely amongst the jokers!

Re: OOC: Table Talk 2

Never played any 2nd edition - my early gaming stopped in about 1987, as my older brother and his mates who I used to play with got more into sex, drugs and rock and roll (well hanging around the bus stop with a bottle of cider); mainly played computer games after that. Tell the truth I didn't think about DnD for 20 years, until I accidentally picked up a 3.5 rulebook in a bookstore - I was most puzzled by what had happened to the A in the title (DnD, that's for kids!).

I played 1ed OA bitd a bit, and have tried a couple of games on rpol - both of which died early deaths. Would love to give that a proper bash!

Re: OOC: Table Talk 2

I'd love to play Oriental Adventures - and I see it is going as a pretty cheap PDF on DriveThru ($4.99).

Is there any sort of medieval Japan type area in your world DM Storm?

Sure. Why not!? This campaign world is basically whatever we want it to be.

There is the hint of an island east-southeast of the Dread Isles where a medieval Japan-type analogue might exist.

Re: OOC: Table Talk 2

In the one adventure I played in, I was a barbarian. Amazing how that freed me up from the honor system the others were bound by. At one point I walked thru town naked like a clothes stealing terminator, because Ninjas had stolen everyone's clothes, and they would lose honor being seen naked.

Not sure if it would be as much fun to play it from the outside though...

I enjoyed Role Master alot, but it was hard to find people willing to play it where I was.

Re: OOC: Table Talk 2

I never used or played in any of the published settings, outside of short-lived on line games late in life. My groups always focused on homebrew 1st and 2nd edition games. OA always appealed to me, but I never found a group to run with it. Looking at it in retrospect, the mechanics seem a bit clumsy for what I'd want to get out of a fantasy-Japan campaign.

Re: OOC: Table Talk 2

I am a bit of a tightarse when it comes to rulebooks. I flatly refuse to pay good money for anything! I have found that with some searching a lot of rulebooks can be found for free on the interweb.

Something I dislike about some modern systems is the plethora of supplemental rulebooks that are needed. I see some games advertised on rpol where they list he dozen or so rulebooks that they will allow. To me, that just seems like to much admin. I prefer a simple system where I can get on with playing, not being a rules monkey.
