Re: Don't Fear the Roper

Waiting for Saliq to finish whatever he is doing, Ben prepared to explore the door once again for the kinds of traps he can find, and the types of locks he can open.

Re: Don't Fear the Roper

Aldo Rathmus:
Rath stays alert as the others examine the door. He keeps his eyes on that shaft, although there's been no indication of danger coming from that direction. Rath moves aside with Monvo and Bruno. "You've got the idea. Stand back and give ranged support, when you can. Bruno, you're doing great." Rath pauses and gives Monvo an appraising glance. He says firmly, but without ire, "Monvo ... a bit more eagerness will go a long way. When the vote comes up for the bonus ...  well, let's just say we'll need some convincing."

Monvo narrows his eyelids after Rath reproaches him for his battlefield strategy.

"I threw both of my javelins! One of them hint! It wasn't my fault that thing had tough hide."

He then grumbles something about only having so many hands, but says nothing more of it.

Meanwhile, Saliq casts his spell an immediately detects a magic aura draped over the door.

Saliq turned to Ben.

"I can find traces of magic on the doors but I think it's due to Eagle's spell. No traces of ancient evil sorcery."

Unless Saliq suggests otherwise, Norion's suggestion will be followed, traps first, then locks...

Re: Don't Fear the Roper

Ben notices a large ceiling block located above the door. The block is rigged to the door such that if on were to push it open, one ton of hurt will fall down and go boom!

Chance of survival = nil

Fortunately, the thief proves his mettle and manages to deactivate the trap by locating a depressed pressure plate at the side of the door. The depression is shaped like an octagon. Curiously, there is an octagon-shaped stone located not too far away, leaning against the side of one of the stairs.

In reply to DM Storm (msg # 493):

Eagle stands well back while they investigate the door, wondering wryly to himself why no one asks him to shape a hole in the stone.

"There's a trap all right, and a nasty one at that."

He points at the octagonal stone near the stair. (There's stairs?)

"The trigger stone looks like that one, be careful around it as well, just in case."

Re: Don't Fear the Roper

Six wide steps, carved from living rock, lead up to the double doors. The octagonal pressure plate is located in front of the door and is set into the floor. The corresponding stone, which seemingly fits into the depression, is located off to its side. The stone is propped up against the wall.

The loose octagonal stone contains a glyph at each of its eight sides. Fortunately, these runes are in the dwarf script, which Norion can easily read:

West, Northwest, North, Northeast, East, Southeast, South, Southwest

A direction for each side.

Now, how might the stone correspond to the corresponding depression, which is not marked?

Rath nods grimly at Monvo's defensive response. "True, you did. Now let's back away from those doors so we don't die."

Rath backs as far from the door as he can get, motioning the henchmen to join him.

"So... that one is the key maybe? We just need to get our directions right. Think we could go outside, figure out north, and keep it right in our mind all the way back?"

Norion has been looking up and down and right and left, he sighs, "Ah'm pretty sure aboot the north, but naught enough to let you all die fer it.  Odds are a funny thing, let me an' Ben do as he says, more than twice, an see wot we think".

He takes an edge of his axe and scratches true north in his mind but covers it up with a cloak.  He'll try again after a surface run and see how they compare.

Re: Don't Fear the Roper

Scrambling up the wall, Ben carefully peeks over the lip. If all is clear he will sneak thru shadow as quietly as he can towards the outside. Once he gets there, if it appears safe, he will try to reckon north as best he can then he heads carefully back down, doing his best to keep north straight in his mind.

Re: Don't Fear the Roper

Norion scratches off a mark, in the direction he believes to be North. Then, he and Ben return to the surface to get their bearings.

It is daylight above, though drifts of fog still enshroud the surrounding hills.

Doing their best to remember their direction, despite all the twists and turns, the pair return.

Ben marks his North.

Norion marks his.

Then the cloak is removed.

Norion's 1st guess is 180 degrees off from his 2nd guess (South in relation to Norion's first guess).

Ben's "North" is Norion's first West.

Oh my!

Re: Don't Fear the Roper

Eagle smiles and nods. 'You may want to be prepared to protect me, depending on what we find on the other side,' he says.

Standing in front of the door he starts to murmer and gesticulate, and then starts drawing his arms up from the ground, as if pulling something invisible out of the very rock. Taking care to stand in a place that isn't directly under the rock, and not disturbing the pressure plate, he suddenly points a palmed hand towards the door frame, and before their very eyes, a hole in the rock to the left of the door starts to be formed, small at first (a peek hole really), as if the rock itself is turning into fluid.

Hopefully at some point this small hole will open up into the other side of the door - if possible Eagle will try and steal a peak through to see what he can see, and if it looks safe he will start to expand the hole's width out so that him and his companions can fit through. If this is accomplished within the power of the spell, and he feels he has any energy left Eagle will turn his palm up towards the block in the ceiling, working with the edges of both the block and the ceiling itself to melt the rock and reconstitute it as a single block of stone.

Inas watched on Eagle weaved his magic, and turned solid rock to a flowing, living thing. "Truly you are a master of your arts. Tis a great wonder you perform, shaping living rock with naught but words and gestures."

He held his bow ready with an arrow half drawn, just in case someone, or something, Oran the other side took exception to this strange manner of entry.

Re: Don't Fear the Roper

Eagle looks through the hole in the stone wall and sees, no, more senses, what appears to be a vast, cavern beyond, periodically illuminated by tiny pinpoints of phosphorescent violet light here or there, but mostly utter darkness. The druid can also hear trickling water, though he can seen no evidence of water.

Sensing no imminent danger, Eagle fashions a hole large enough for even the largest of party members to step through.

Ben's torchlight does little to illuminate the vastness of the cavern beyond, save for the first few steps within. The door opens onto a narrow ledge overlooking a vast chasm. The sound of trickling water comes from somewhere below, though it is not evident from this side of the door where. The group can also see several large mushrooms sprouting out of the ledge every few yards. Perhaps these are what contribute to the odd, musty smell that hangs thickly in the air.

The ledge itself seems to be a trail of sorts, for it is well-worn and slips away outside of torchlight, downward into the chasm.

Save for the sound of water, the cavern is silent.

Rath advances very slowly, allowing the dwarf to move ahead. He has put away his weapons, to keep both hands free for balance, but he is keenly aware of danger and his hands do not stray far from the shaft of his trident. He tries to stay near Saliq, to offer the wizard some protection - and to be within range of that invisibility spell, just in case.

Re: Don't Fear the Roper

Inas nodded at Saliq's order to not touch the mushrooms. He had heard of such things, and had indeed encountered many plants and fungi with strange properties in his time. Best to leave well alone...

Allowing the dwarf to pass through first, Inas stayed back and held onto his bow. With his sword sheathed and shield slung over his back he followed on through once the others had gone ahead. That should allow him to guard the rear as well as to give him room to use his bow should the need arise.

The cavern below looked dark and unwelcoming. "What manner of foul creature would dwell in such a place?" he muttered quietly to himself.
