Re: Silent Night?

Rath and Saliq successfully fight off the impulse to double over and violently retch in response to the ghasts' awful stench, but both are repulsed nonetheless. At least they are in better shape than Norion, has now succumbed to the ghast's paralyzing touch. Perhaps Inas too will soon be in the same state?

For his part, Saliq is faring well against the ghasts, but that is only because he has escaped their attention and none have targeted him yet.

Ben, well, he is still in the watchtower, watching, though he is aware that some sort of confrontation is occurring in the ruined west wing.

Eagle is resting soundly at a comfortable inn in Windham.

OOC: Inas needs to roll a save vs Paralysis before posting an action during this next round.

Ben makes it down off the parapet and crosses the courtyard, coming within 30 feet of Saliq and Rath when he notices Rath fending off a ghast. Meanwhile, deeper inside the ruined keep, he sees Norion, seemingly paralyzed, and Inas, fighting against two more ghasts.

Seeing some of his companions retching and vomiting while the sturdy dwarf appeared to be frozen in fear somehow spurred Inas forward. He swung his mighty sword like a man possessed, hacking and slashing with renewed vigour. He roared an unintelligible battle cry, urging himself to win out and save his companions.

His blade bit withered flesh twice, hacking chunks off the foul creatures rotting body.

One ghast grabs hold of Rath and rakes its claws into the warrior before pulling him down to the ground to sink its teeth for the kill. Rath falls to the ground and loses consciousness. Saliq and Ben can only watch as their companion succumbs to him wounds.

Meanwhile, a few feet distant, Inas fights off the wounded ghast and manages to keep the undead creature at bay.

OOC: Rath took 10 points of damage and is unconscious. Since Rath and Norion are both effectively out of the battle, we will move to a new round.

Re: Silent Night?

The ghast straddling Rath is hit in the back by one of Saliq's daggers. This distracts it from the task of feasting on the unconscious fighter and it turns its head, and notices Ben lurking nearby. The ghast hisses and grunts something unintelligible before taking off after Ben. Ben dodges behind a column as the ghast approaches, but slips and falls. The ghast seizes on the opportunity and is atop Ben the next moment, tearing into the thief with its claws. Then, it leans down and sinks its teeth into Ben to seal the deal.

Ben loses consciousness...

Meanwhile, Inas has his own problems. The ghast is wounded but relentless. It swings its arms wildly, desperate to strike the ranger. And it does. Twice. They are minor scuffles, but a mere touch is enough to put a man in peril.

OOC: Ben took 10 points of damage and is unconscious and dying. Inas takes 5 points of damage and must make a saving throw vs Paralysis. Since Rath and Norion are both effectively out of the battle, we will move to a new round.

Norion is stiff, something running through his veins, stopping him from action, his blood boils against it, but he cannot move. He can barely breathe, takes all his force, but he can tell things are going poorly in the battle. He prays, for the first time in decades.

"Mah Lord, so recently ah laid at yer gates, and fer the first time, came to understand much, and gladly will ah come and be with you in yer halls, if thot is yer will, but much 'ave I yet ta do, and in yer ways fer once, send us yer grace...."

Even as he prays, he's held his breathe, gathering enough to whisper out a word or two, perhaps his last....

Re: Silent Night?

A thrown dagger hits the ground beside one of the ghasts as it kneeling over Ben, attempting to feast on its recently fallen prey. The noise draws the ghast's attention and it looks up, and around, eventually casting its sallow eyes on Saliq, standing just 15 feet distant. With a growl, it lopes toward the illusionist and attacks. It is all Saliq can do just to get his hands up to defend himself, but in truth, he is no match for the ghast and is quickly brought to the ground with two shoves followed up with those gnashing teeth. Saliq slips into unconsciousness...

Meanwhile, the second ghast takes stock of the area around him. Seemingly all living foes have been dealt with, all that remains are dying and paralyzed prey. Let the feasting begin.

First up, the one with the big sword: Inas.

Inas is lying on the ground, conscious, but unable to move as the ghast begins tearing it his armor, intent on getting at his still-pumping heart first. The horror...

Meanwhile, a few feet away, Rath has come to, his vision blurry in the darkness. The sound of battle is no more, only the sound of hungry growls of contentment. He looks over and sees one ghast tearing at Inas' armor, while a few feet away, Norion is lying on the floor, apparently paralyzed. Ben is lying in a pool of his own blood. Saliq is perhaps 15 feet distant, a ghast hovering menacingly over the illusionist.

All is apparently lost...or is it?

The human fighter yet breathes. Perhaps hope still beats within the warrior's heart?

OOC: Saliq took 12 points of damage and is unconscious. Inas takes 5 points of damage.

Re: Silent Night?

Rath doesn't know how he got up onto his knees. He struggles to stand. Vision blurred and the pain which should be wracking his body receded to a dull ache and terrible stiffness, his world is reduced to the ungodly stench of something worse than death, the taste of vomit in his throat, and the unwholesome noise of the enemy.

Distantly, Rath wonders if he is now one of them, these loathsome eaters of the dead, turned by some necromancy into a beast. But, nope, not hungry, not in the slightest. His gut still roils inside him, wanting to turn inside out. His knees wobble. Running is out of the question.

He strides forward, taking the ghast from behind, and thrusts his trident deeply into the creature's lower back. He pulls the weapon loose with a jerk, drawing out disgusting loops of entrails with it.

There is still another. Rath braces himself for an attack, but he is barely able to keep to his feet.

Vaguely, Rath remembers the pendant left in his pack, the old rustic wooden sun, painted blue and gold and worn smooth. He had pushed it into his pack in a moment of gloom. Damn. If he had to die, Rath would have liked to die wearing it.

Re: Silent Night?

Rath plunges the Devilsbane deep into the ghast's back, interrupting the undead creature's attempt to feast on Inas' still-beating heart. The ghast howls in pain as it expires, collapsed on Inas' prone form.

There is no time for celebration however, for Rath barely has an opportunity to pull the trident out of the dead ghast's back before he notices the second ghast, whom had previously dropped Saliq, is charging at the trident-armed warrior.

But before it can get to Rath, it must get by that pesky trident!

OOC: Since Rath is armed with a reach weapon, and the ghast is charging, Rath will get an attack off BEFORE the ghast can attack. This is probably a "for the game" attack folks. Good luck Rath...

Re: Silent Night?

The Devilsbane trident hits the ground with the metallic clink of finality. A moment later, Rath's legs give out and the human fighter from Stormhaven falls to the ground, his eyes barely able to see Inas and Norion in the periphery.

Though Rath cannot feel it, he notices the ghast hunched over him now, perhaps tugging greedily at his armor. He then hears a wet sound that is hard to place and then, he loses consciousness, the last thing he sees is Norion's eyes, stern and resolute.

Ben and Saliq are fortunately unconscious and are thus spared from the horror that ensues in the darkness of that ruined and utterly evil keep; but, for Norion and Inas, their terror is the most profound.

Conscious, yet unable to do anything to stop those things from sating their dark appetites...
