Episode 5-3: A Taste for Killing

As the crowd dispersed after the violence, some of them followed Daniel into the Cowtown saloon. Stepping into the saloon, Daniel found a place with a warm and good natured ambiance. There were a couple of card games going and everyone had a drink in hand. There were a couple of obligatory drunks slumped on their tables, and saloon gals seated in the laps of some of the randier customers, making their living one night at a time. The bartender stood behind the bar, serving his customers.

Daniel took some time to observe the interior of the saloon, though wasn't particularly certain for what he was looking. He wandered over to the bar and waited to get the attention of the man pouring the drinks. His tin star was visible, though he didn't do anything to emphasize that fact.

Clementine, next to Danial, sniffed the air and wagged her tail at all the strange and interesting new scents in the place.

The man looked up at Daniel after a moment, seeming to just realize he was there, having been lost in thought earlier. "Can I help you? You need a drink, uh, deputy?"

Daniel smiled at the barkeep, though kept his question brief and to the point. "Nothin' ta drink, least not yet. Mebbe when I'm off duty. Right now, I'ma jus' lookin' fer a man. He woulda come out the alley straight 'cross from yer saloon. Wonderin' who mighta been lookin' out that way earlier this evenin'. Like if anybody might be in a room upstairs overlookin' Chestnut, or anybody settin' near the winda facing that direction." Daniel gestured in the direction he was concerned with - back towards the front of the saloon.

"Well, plenty of men have come in here tonight, and everybody that's come in let a room is out here," he said, gesturing to the common area.

"Someone in particular yer lookin fer?"

"Oh, that kinda thing. Well, there's only one room upstairs that faces Chestnut, and it was let by that fella over there - the one that's dealin' the cards. His name is Desmond. From Back East somewhere I think." He points to a rather rotund man that's sitting behind a table dealing cards to a few others around him. He's surrounded by a group of rather serious looking folks, all of whom seem to be extremely intent on their cards.

Daniel walked over toward the card game and the fellow that the barkeep gestured toward. He waited for the man to deal and the hand to finish before he spoke. "Mister Desmond? Can I getta word withya?"

Re: Episode 5-3: A Taste for Killing

Daniel briefly looked around at the others, but decided this didn't have to take very long and wasn't necessarily private. "I'm tryin' ta find a man that fled from a saloon just down th'way." He pointed in the directioin of the Dog Eye. "We followed his tracks on behind the buildin's on th'udder side o'th'street." He now pointed straight out through the front of the building. "Seemed ta emerge from th'alleyway straight across from this buildin'. Saloon keeper here mentioned ya had a room with a winda overlookin' Chestnut. I was wonderin' if ya mighta seen somethin' that might help."

"How long ago this happen? Cause I been down here playin' cards for a good long while now, and I ain't been lookin' out the window. There's money ridin' on this here game," he said, taking his cards, and studying them briefly before putting them down.

Re: Episode 5-3: A Taste for Killing

Daniel nodded, "I dunno how long it's been, but I think that answers muh question jus' aswell." He looked to the other gathered gentlemen and nodded at them all with a smile, "I'll letcha get back ta yer card game. Apologies fer interruptin', have good evenin'."

Not surprisingly, wandering off with Clementine had been a complete waste of his time. But he had felt compelled to be acquiesce to Randolph's suggested course of action for the sake of friendliness. Not that Daniel was any sort of expert on investigations, but he hoped to learn more than this wild goose chase had taught.

With a friendly smile and wave, Daniel bid the saloon keeper a good day and called Clementine to his side. As soon as they made their way out of the saloon, Daniel again dropped to a knee and gave Clementine a good scratching behind her ears and along her flanks. He then sauntered back over to the Dog Eye with her in tow to see what the others were up to.

Clementine barked happily at the scratching. She'd helped! She'd been useful! She was a Good Dog! She wasn't sure what she'd done, not exactly, but yay!
