Re: The Search for Information
Alztop (Startown)
At a run-down lounge favoured by spaceers named "The Star Chaser", Ken and Neva found a woman who knew Dumaer. Her name was Margayl, around 30, a bartender.
She went on breatk and sat them at a booth. Over drinks, she told them what she knew.
"Dumaer (one name) was my boyfriend, and he went by only one name. We met about four years ago and had a steady relationship, as steady as you're going to find with someone that ships out for months at a time.
"There are four interstellar governments here in Jungleblut and a few independent Worlds, and Dumaer bragged he worked for 'em all at some time or another. Plus merchant associations, shipping lines as a pilot, or someone with Scout training. Sometimes, when he got drunk, he'd say he worked for more than one group at a time, and sometimes other, shadier people.
"Although he used to be an Imperial Scout, he worked all over. Year before last he started working for the Descarothe Hegemony on Desaekhe, and was doing surveys on the Worlds on their periphery: Iraaz, Nomael, Qarant and others.
"Three months ago, we were at home and we saw a news program about the Sky Raider discovery on Mirayn. There was a news conference with some lady from the Institute that I don't recognise. When they showed some of the findings, Dumaer sat up and started wondering if something he picked up on one of the worlds he visited was worth something. He started making calls, and he finally talked to someone at the Institute, who seemed to be interested in buying what he'd found, and him saying he knew where there were more. I think it was a man he talked to. He seemed impressed and made an appointment to see Dumaer later that night.
"He packed up a bunch of things in a case, then that was the last I saw of him. I haven't heard from him since, and he always used to send me a letter when he could."
Margyl seemed sad but resigned that her boyfriend seemed to have disappeared out of her life with so little fanfare.
Alzenei Scout Base
The Alzenei Exploration Service was based there, and shared the facility with IISS Base Alzenei. "Dumaer" is listed as a detached Imperial scout, but has been listed as missing without explanation for three months. His assigned ship was left at the base and so it was given a new assignment.
At the Detached Duty office at the Scout base, Blake ran into someone he knew. "Blake, how you doin', my friend? How are those PRISS viewers I, ah, loaned you?"
It was Ali, one of Blake's contacts at the Scout base. He'd gotten them 2 pairs of Scout issue PRISS binoculars.
