In reply to Ken Jenkins (msg # 504):

Honestly, I was trying to decide if the mass of the asteroid would provide enough microgravity to counteract the centrifugal force of the spin on surface objects and decided it was spinning too fast. But I could be wrong!

Re: OOC: Off-Topic Posts II

Certainly spin adds a level of complexity to docking small craft to the asteroid.  The combination of grav plates with their own orientation, spin-oriented decks and areas where the grav plates may be inoperative will create a potential confusion of orientations in the asteroid.

In reply to Ken Jenkins (msg # 506):

Docking while the ship is under spin is something that would probably be done on computer or automatic/ground control guidance. Berthing on manual (by hand) would be possible, if a little tricky!

Drs. Chandragora and Goezghae might have more thoughts on this process, and on the use of spin gravity in general.

Jeri's going to have real fun pulling the patched together cutter down out of the hole it's in and up into the place of concealment the Doc found for her. :)

Re: OOC: Off-Topic Posts II

With a long thin asteroid like you have described, it's going to be going round like the clappers to generate any spin gravity. Consider the angular momentum... (this is why people suggest large ring-shaped space stations when they want to spin them).

What is the diameter of this beastie anyway?

In reply to Linus Spruance (msg # 509):

It's 10km long, 4km wide at the centrepoint. Not as needle-like as the picture of the anomalous asteroid that entered the Earth system earlier last year.

http://www.artificial-gravity....pinCalc/SpinCalc.htm

Using this calculator for 1g at the surface (2km radius) it looks like it makes .6 rotation a minute.

Re: OOC: Off-Topic Posts II

Right, so about twice the size of the Babylon 5 space station, and that had spin gravity. So doable.

In reply to Linus Spruance (msg # 512):

I think the angular velocity would be 140 m/s. Fast if you were running but not too fast for a spacecraft to match speed. But you couldn't easily hover over the surface, you'd need to go straight in.

Re: OOC: Off-Topic Posts II

You'd just have to manage the small craft docking issues which would be doable.

I like that we've got exploration and salvage and set up going on at the same time.

Re: OOC: Off-Topic Posts II

Back to that ancient computer game, Elite... first thing you did was get enough money to buy a docking computer then you didn't have to mess around matching the spin (or so my dearly beloved, who plays video games, tells me)!

Or the sequence in the movie 2001: A Space Odessey where a small craft docks with a ring-shaped station in Earth orbit.

I am trying to remember an early DOS spaceflight simulator like Elite. Not as good, probably a little earlier (ray-traced graphics). Featured a young dude on the cover, scowling, in a leather jacket with a helmet and white scarf.

Are there side passages or doors down this new passageway?

No, I intended to convey that it's just one long passage with no side entrances. But we can say there are some service bays or conduits, that would make sense.

3rd blizzard in 2 weeks tonight and tomorrow.  So far so good, marginal snow and weather effects.

Hi,

We had nice sunny weather all week. Very un-Canadian!

It's that time of year, for my club's annual convention weekend! Hooray!

I got called into work to help proctor exams (which took all day) today.  That was at 730 a.m.   I didn't like trying to get into the car with 1/8" thick ice on the windshields and  door.

I hear you Neva.  Almost 3 feet of snow here in Vermont, mid-thigh on me now.  I had to dig my way to the nearest bird feeder yesterday.  3 blizzards in 2 weeks, now a 4th is approaching.

Stay safe Blake!  It got up to around 40 by noon so everything melted.  I lucked out and had some windshield de-icer that was on my step that I could use.  I didn't need it last year so had almost a full bottle.  Notice that "had".  There's now only a quarter of it left.

Re: OOC: Off-Topic Posts II

Hi everybody.

I've gotten more things thrown at me from work and unfortunately, I've got to cut back on my games here on RPoL.  Things are just too hectic in RL to be in so many games.

PLEASE do NOT think it was any of your guys fault nor the GMs fault etc.  Blame it on work.  You have been terrific to game with and I know I will see and game with some of you in some of the other games.

Thanks for fun ride.
