Sounds like a blast! (Literally.)
I had the original licenced game for Team Yankee back in the 80's published by GDW. The modern incarnation, being based on Flames of War, seems to have a major flaw in that there is still no opportunity fire, unless this has changed. This aspect made FoW seem a lot like Panzerblitz, aka "Panzerbush" whereby units would scoot from cover to cover because they were safe in transit despite being in the open.
This game of Car Wars may be a little different than the players are expecting because everyone I know who played or plays CW goes the standard arena combat route. However, I will be running the classic adventure "Convoy!" The players must escort a rig hauling a tanker full of algae from Lexington to Memphis through no-man's land. I suspect they will need to change their tactics because in an arena fight you can give 'er everythng as you can usually repair between fights or get a replacement vehicle. But on the open road you still need to make it to the destination and who knows what else is there down the road?
I am also going to suggest to the players that when combat starts everyone immediately slow down. Unlike arenas, which are mostly open, you only got three lanes to work with which is a very tight space if you are going over 30 or so. You may need to get to Memphis on time but in this combat you don't need to get anywhere fast and that tanker handles poorly as it is. Speaking of the tanker, if you have mines or droppables make sure you don't lay them anywhere near it because the less manoeuvering it does, the better, and you don't want to make the rig jockey's job any tougher than it needs to be! Lastly, consider "Soviet tank doctrine" when engaging enemies. Usually in an arena fight everyone kinds of pairs off to duke it out except for opportunity shots. Working together you have a lot of firepower so with multiple targets consider designating a single target for everyone to hammer on to get out of the fight as soon as possible.
