Re: OOC: Off-Topic Posts II

Morrow Project!  Good times!

Team Yankee doesn't have opportunity fire so you can sneak from cover to cover.  The key is to have a good balance of cover so that you can hide a bit but can't sneak to point blank range.  Infantry close combat does allow defensive fire when charged which can be deadly when you face a Soviet company with a LOT of machine guns!  We've never had too much of a problem with the sneak and attack as we have decently open boards for the game.

In reply to Ken Jenkins (msg # 681):

The funny thing about the game convention is that I won the "Team Yankee" boxed set "Hammerfall" in a raffle. There are 2x M1 Abrams tanks included along with 3x T-64s, a rule book, terrain and unit cards. I see the issue with a lack of opportunity fire was noted in a review that also referenced "PanzerBush". I ran my Car Wars game and managed to finish it in the time allotted, no mean feat. Our table did get honourable mention is the display judging as it was an example of how a nice game can be staged without breaking the bank.

Re: OOC: Off-Topic Posts II

Opportunity fire can lead to what is called the T-55 rush in TY.  It's annoying but at least movement rates are such that you can still get your fire in before they are on you.  Also infantry does get defensive fire when charged for close combat.

They just came out with a neat supplement called 'Oil Wars' which gives you a nice Middle East mash up of Soviets and Iran plus Syria against Iraq, some Nato and Israel.  The Israelis have some neat stuff.

Re: OOC: Off-Topic Posts II

In reply to Ken Jenkins (msg # 690):

Doing some reading, I see in TY there is something called "MSU" (Many Small Units) where units like the T-55 are cheap as borscht, thus leading to a swarm.

quote:
Why Use the T-55AM2?
On the surface the T-55AM2 looks like a suboptimal choice as it cannot hurt most enemy tanks in a head to head duel. When guided missile carriers like the M901 ITV, Swingfire and Jaguar have missiles quite capable of knocking out a T-55AM2, and thanks to their higher To Hit number and the likelihood of firing from cover are less likely to be hit by any return fire, especially if the T-55AM2 is moving.

Of course, one of the advantages of a wargame over reality is that no real-world battlefield commander wants to fight a battle where the odds are not in their favour, while games have a points system to balance everything out and so this is where the T-55AM2 (along with other older generation tanks like M60 and Leopard 1 tanks) can shine.

Know Your T-55
A full strength East German T-55AM2 Panzer Company comes in at only 16 points, or 1.6 points per tank. This average points value actually drops quite notably when you look at the smaller platoon sizes . I won’t dive into the pros and cons of MSU because I don’t consider myself an expert on the theory but having found myself on the receiving end a number of times it is definitely an option as it is challenging for a force composed primarily of modern tanks (Abrams, Leopard 2, or Chieftain tanks) to kill enough before the T-55AM2 tanks start making their side shots count.

MSU And You!
For some people the acronym MSU will be something very new and depending on who you ask it means; Many Small Units, Multiple Small Units, Minimum Size Units, or something along these lines. The theory (in brief) is that a large number of relatively cheap units will overwhelm a defender’s ability to kill the attackers fast enough, resulting in the swarm killing the enemy, losing more models but less overall points.

To Swarm Or Not To Swarm
This one really comes down to you. Team Yankee has a very diverse and growing range of list theming options for players making the days of one true list to rule them all less likely. However, I suspect that there will always be a place for someone that wants to put 20-30 (or more) cheap T-55 tanks backed up by some Hinds, infantry in BMPs or BTRs and a few specialist assets on the battlefield. I know I’ve already started creating a stash of models for a future project once I have finished my Canadian Leopard 1 Company and French AMX-10RC Companies!

I can't see why Op Fire/Overwatch would more likely result in a rush of cheap attacking units, you'd think it would be more difficult if you couldn't shoot at them at all as they closed? Either way, I wouldn't turn down a game of TY if offered, although I don't think I'll do anything with the Hammerfall pack.

Either way, the Inquisitor wasn't seen for a while after you landed. Either Jumped out or behind the asteroid.

Re: OOC: Off-Topic Posts II

I play West Germans who have the most expensive tank in the game in the form of the Leopard II.

One thing that helps against the swarm attack is entrenched infantry with Milans.  You can get three stands of ATGM that are almost impossible to pry out of hard cover for not many points.  Then your Marder APC's have a nice cannon that can clear off the opposing, charging APC's.  I also bring a couple of scout vehicles as they have a nice cannon and can scout forward to restrict enemy setup.

The other bane of the swarm is artillery.  I've taken out 4-5 T-55 in a single turn with a good 155mm gun volley.

It's a fun game despite the compromises and lack of realism in some places.  They've had to simplify stuff for playablity which at this point in my career I appreciate!

Sure, looks like a fun game! The lack of realism is not a deal-breaker. As well, didn't Marders also have a Milan? Ah, I see that was later versions. Very handy!

How fun!!!!  I'm green with envy.  :)

Yea, in TY the WG Marders can keep the Milan with the vehicle or dismount it as an infantry team.  I tend to dismount and hide so I can maneuver the Marders to use their cannon against BMPs and such.

Blake Renfield:
The big questions are where, why, and how. An air sampler and  rad detector might be good items to also bring forward. Unless someone already has them ??

Prof Messandi has been running air tests all the way up here and, according to her early posts,  she is using a good, wide-ranging, detector.  Jack also implied that the detector can detect radioactive particles in the air.
