Re: The Temple

In reply to Blake Renfield (msg # 365):

There was one bit of luck in their favour. Blake felt sure he knew some old Scout codes that Hanno and Dumaer, fellow ex-Scouts, likely knew as well. Mainly a pad cipher based on the Imperial Scout handbook. Easy to crack if they had a copy of that manual on them. Most Scouts did, but Ollie (who'd been Shanghai'd into Kalanaru's outfit) didn't think the smugglers had any Scouts on their payroll and the Hegemony certainly did not. (They decided to use an independent contractor like Dumaer into conducting their in-depth surveys of Qarant, after all.)

Re: The Temple

The scouter's handbook ...  Of course, just the thing for sending in the clear.  Ollie, I can give you a coded message in two thruster bursts.  Blake flips pages, mumbles to himself, snaps the book shut.  Java. Helios. Neng. Groatburgers. Buka. Ting. Tenk. Zena.  Wiki wiki.  Got that ?? He eyes the vargr mechanical genius.

right, lets put some klicks between us and them.  he then looks at ken and Thomas, Is 2 hours too much delay??

Ken frowns at Lorain's reply.  "Go ahead and get that signal rigged Blake.  Two hours should be enough.  I don't think we want to wait for dark to get out of here.  As long as we stay to the ravines and valleys and out of sight it should be good.  They may be on this place if we wait for dark."

Re: The Temple

Blake attempted to set up their radio transmit a prerecorded signal at a certain time. It was a TL9 model, advanced enough to handle this task without difficulty.

That finished, they prepared to leave.

In reply to GM (msg # 370):

Using his scoped rifle, Thomas kept watch on the valley while the preparations were being made.

"Seems like they are starting to search the area around the dome. I think Lorrain's right, it's only a matter of time before they think to look over here.

"One thing I don't like here. This is our backpack radio set. If we leave it, we'll have short-range radios. If the Grav Carrier gets the message about the RV point, we won't be able to hear their response. And if we don't make the RV, we have no way of making further long-range communication."

Ken shrugged.  "The short range sets just can't reach.  Unless we can keep the burst transmission ultra short we'll have to leave it behind."

Thinking, Thomas asked, "does it need to be a long transmission? I'd think it would be best if they don't detect our radio at all.

"Why give them a starting point for their search?"

Ollie slyly says, "I was wondering what would happen if we accidently recorded audio of us talking about the RV at the end of the transmission. Just a pity for them if they misunderstood the details and looked in the wrong spot."

Blake gives Ollie a high five.  Imagine that, a vargr with a sense of humor.  He kicks around for a hiding spot, when all is done and said ...  Then start moving.  Ken or Thomas, can one of you cover our tracks.

Thomas nodded. "No problem at all. We didn't see any guard dogs around. I guess they don't rely on them, but whatever the reason, lucky for us. That would make things much harder."

Re: The Temple

They rigged up the radio to transmit coordinates of the actual RV point in code. Then gibberish to confuse anyone, but including background talk of a different RV point. All in a short time to defeat Radio Direction-finding. A tall order!

OOC: I would say that Blake can roll on JoT to use the Scout code. Ken rolls on Tactics (+1) and Linus on Computer (+1) to program the radio. Post your rolls in your next IC post.

Blake just makes the JoT roll.  He sighs, reviews it in his mind, soldiers onward.

11:17, Today: Blake Renfield rolled 8 using 2d6+1 with rolls of 4,3.  Blake -- JoT roll.

Ken huddled with Blake and Linus to program the radio.  He added what he knew of deceptive communication procedures as well as Descathe operational tactics to aid them in their deception.

Re: The Temple

Looking at the preparations, Thomas said, "it looks good enough. Let's hope they take the bait.

"These coordinates are fpr the fake RV point. It's to the northeast. That's the closest route over the eastern ridge. It's the direction they'd expect us to go.

"But actually, our real RV point will be directly west, across the valley behind the other ridge. We'll need to circle around to the north and that will add about three kilometres to our reoute but it's the safest thing I can think of.

"The only problem is we will need to cross the river at some point. Again, they will be less likely to search the west side of the river and that part of the valley. If anyone has a better idea, let me know."

He spread a map out on the ground for reference.

Ken looked at the map and then nodded.  "I like the plan Thomas.  The river crossing may be difficult but we'll face that when we get that far."  He looked at the others; "Any suggestions or do we move out?"

Re: The Temple

In reply to Ken Jenkins (msg # 385):

It seemed no one had a better idea.

They set out, moving through the forest down and across the hillside, keeping the high ground between them and the Daesekhe camp.

After 3 km they reached the valley floor and then turned west, making good time moving along the northern edge of the ruins in the sparse forest. After thousands of years and regular flooding, there no intact structures poking above the ground, they were all buried under metres of dirt, mud and forest loam.

At the specified time their radio began transmitting automatically. There was no way for them to determine its effectiveness or even if it worked at all.

After walking 6km, they came out of the forest on the banks of the river.

"Well here we are again.  At the banks of a river that we have to cross.  Let's hope it is easier than the last one."

Neva looked up and down the river, trying to see if they were in immediate danger or just the normal that seemed to be dodging them.

Ken sized up the river looking at the speed of current and possible depth.  He also cast up and down the banks a bit looking for driftwood or smaller trees that might be used to make a raft should that be needed.

Re: The Temple

Blake looks at the water and sees engine fuel ...  He then looks all around, sky and land.  Then the current rate.  Fast enough to carry us downriver a distance, possibly separating everyone ??  He bends down for a feel, how cold ??  Miserable is one thing, wet and miserable is totally different.  Is it cold enough to mask their IR signature ??  Anything floating down the river ??  Otherwise we could stick out like, well, down-range targets ...  How long until dark ??

Re: The Temple

It was early afternoon, about four hours until dark.

The river was fairly wide, about 300m. Here in the lowlands it was slow.

Blake knew that all bodies of water, without exception, completely block any IR/thermal signature due to its heat-conducting properties. The water itself was fairly cold, like the chilly planet itself. Long exposure would court hypothermia.

The forest was about 20m behind them up the muddy bank and a short verge of grass. It looked like there was enough dead wood to build a raft. There was also much driftwood scattered along the bank, from branches to sun-bleached tree trunks, brought down from the surrounding wooded hills.

In reply to GM (msg # 390):

Thomas looked at the river, and the forest.

"I reckon I could build us a raft that will get us across before we float too far downstream. Or we could go up the river a ways? Make it less likely we'll end up too far downstream."
