Within the Asteroid

The cutter was loaded up with gear and the exploration party.

Jerri, the cutter pilot, maneuvered into the impact crater on the side of the vast, dark bulk. Keeping the craft stationary above the bottom of the crater, EVA teams were deployed to secure the ship and explore the cracks and fissures in the bottom. A few looked very promising.

Blake watched the vid feeds, nodding his head at times.  Then took a nap.

In reply to Blake Renfield (msg # 2):

Beside him in the cutter, Jack playfully shoved Blake to awaken him.

"Hey! Neil! You just volunteered to be first out the hatch. Let's go, someone's gotta explore this crater."

He closed the faceplate of his vacc suit, switched to internal breathing mixture and completed his suit-up drill. "OK. Checklist completed. PLSS is nominal, all systems are green. Let's get in the air lock! Anyone else coming?"

"I'll come," said Linus, who was bored sitting around. He went through the requisite drills.

"All personal systems nominal. Cross-check, please."

Lucky jack - the life of the party.  Blake suits up too, then bows to Jack to be the first of the group out the hatch.  Blake then checks all the read-outs one more time ...

Within the Asteroid

In reply to Linus Spruance (msg # 4):

The three of them cross-checked each others' gear, Vacc Suit seals and pressure, and PLSS function/air supply. All systems were in the green. The airlock cycled, letting them out into the bottom of the crater.

The giant asteroid was spinning at a fairly rapid rate, presumably to provide centrifugal force for simulating gravity in the interior compartments as an alternative to grav plate technology. That meant that the cutter needed to be anchored lest it drift into the rear wall of the crater. As well, the Inquisitor needed to make regular boosts from time to time for station-keeping purposes to keep above the rim of the crater, lest it fail to keep up and drop down out of sight as the mothership rotated.

Working together, the three anchored the cutter using lines secured to explosive bolts. Once that was accomplished they also set guide lines from the airlock to the surface (although due to the spin it seemed more like they were hanging beneath the asteroid).

Within the Asteroid

In reply to GM (msg # 6):

Like the others, Jack remained tethered to the cutter for safety purposes.

Using precise boosts from his Vacc-Suit maneuver system, Jack found the drone where it was parked near a deep fissure that looked like it penetrated to a lateral corridor. Freeing the drone from its anchor cables, he shone his light down into the crack.

"I'm sending the drone back to the ship, it can't help us any more. This one looks good. Blake, set a guide line to here. Linus, go set a repeater beacon on the lip of the crater. Just in case the ship falls behind and we lose LOS we won't lose comms."

"Right, on it," said Linus. He headed up to the crater rim with a beacon and set to anchoring it securely.
