Questions and Answers?
The room contains few secrets. You rifle through it and find nothing else of note. Ael is able to read the ledger, it's written in common, it is less of a ledger and more of a dairy of events. Flipping through aimlessly she is able to discern it was written by a devotee of Rovagug, possibly a priest, there are hundreds of pages and she finds it difficult to pick out anything of note. The dating used is unconventional and hard to decipher. Perhaps if she spent more time reading she'd be able to find pertinent information.

"Let us head back..." said Rum looking around to see if there was anything to pick up that they had left behind "The wizards might be able to tell us something about all this". Then sighing, he moved towards the strange monster, and picked it up. It was best to take it out lest the smell get into their hideout.

You clamber out of the trapdoor and find Ristan speaking Thomas. They look up when you enter Thomas smiles "Ristan has been filling me in on your eventful journey; it seems we have a lot to discuss. But first you must tell us what you found beyond the trapdoor." he says gesturing towards the two books Ael carries.

"A Thognorok, among other things" Ael responds as she holds out the books and the scroll discovered. "Also, two summoning circles, both now destroyed."

Kazumi decided to add a few more details that had not been mentioned.  "We also found a few items:  A magic staff, that Kyomi-san will be using, a few items we have not discovered their purpose, a few potions, some small spheres, and a note with all five our names written on it.  The last was a bit disquieting to a few of us..."

"The Staff is one of Minor Arcana. There were two doors, each one keyed to a different 'goddess', Rovagug and Lamashtu, respectively. We found the Thognorok behind the first door. Strangely enough, the circle inscribed on the floor wasn't a summoning circle. Instead it sent a Beacon to another plane, guiding the Thognorok to this world. I deemed both circles dangerous enough to destroy by physical means" Ael elucidates.

Thomas' eyes go wide when you mention the Thognorok and the summoning circles. "We were sitting above this the whole time? Thank Cailean that the area was caved in." Thomas took a moment to compose himself, apparently the idea of sitting above such horrors didn't sit well with him, then reached out towards Kazumi gesturing for the unidentified objects. He took them one at a time and inspected them. His eyes narrowed at once when he looked at the first of the vials. "Ristan look!" he said handing one vial to the half-elf and un-stoppering another. "These aren't ours are they?" Ristan asked quizzically "Certainly not." the wizard answered "These potions will allow an individual to move back through time. They are similar to our own but we did not make them." the wizard looked at you all frankly "We are unaware that anyone else has this ability. We have guarded our formula quite rigorously. Each of us holds part of the recipe." he states as he produces a piece of parchment next to him Ristan does the same.

Ylea looked with surprise at the two mages, and then said:

"So all that one would have to do to get the full recipe would be to kill you both. And since the potion allows one to travel to the past, they'd then just need to bring the recipe to a point in time before you wrote it down to have access to it before you do. At which point, would killing you even be necessary anymore?"

It was clear from the tone of her voice that the elf didn't expected the two to know the answer, but was asking anyway, just to make sure she had her facts straight.

Rum moved this concepts around his mind getting rather dizzy along the process... "Still... would it make any difference destroying the formula now ? if worse comes to worst they'd probably try to kill them or torture them to get each part of the formula.".

"How did... or how will this information get out of your knowledge ?, and how do you know this is not done with your formula, or even by you in the future and then brought to the past or something like that ?"

Ylea shook her head.

"I'm not partial to destroying the formula - I want to fix what's happened to Absalom first. I won't let my city remain rubbles. Beside, as I said, it might not matter anymore - it all really depends on how changing the past works."

Ael chimes in "Indeed. Does a temporal alteration change past, present, and future, or does it just create an off-shoot reality where the change was made?"

Thomas focuses on Ael ”I believe you have already answered your own question. Ristan recounted your time in our laboratory and it would seem you changed the past but he and I have no knowledge of it. We remember only what we experienced at that time. Things are changing around us. I’m guessing that our awareness of the situation is allowing us to remember what was; instead of the altered reality. If that logic holds true, then we will be able to recognize gross changes to the timeline; if we can manage to save Absalom we will know the city whole but also remember it as a ruin.” Thomas started to look tired once more ”This is all very hard to understand; I suggest you take the time to read through these texts for anything relevant. We need information going forward. It would seem someone has learned the secret of temporal travel and is actively attempting to disrupt our efforts. Ristan and I will take some more time with these potions and these stones. The stones are very curious indeed….” he trailed off as he gazed at the stone.

Hopefully that makes sense. I've been working on it disjointedly throughout the day.

OOC: It does to me, at least.

Ylea nodded.

"Very well then; if the best answers we can get are hiding within these records, studying them is what we should focus on."

She then turned toward the cleric.

"Ael, how do you want to do this? I have some experience in braving complex texts and can help you if you want, but I'm not sure if that'd be faster than each of us studying a different portion of the texts on our own."

Ael answers Ylea "the diary is written in Common, but some of the context might be religious in nature. I am best suited to interpret such writings. The other book I can aid you with. I can pray for the means for another to comprehend foreign words and phrases. With such an enchantment cast upon you, you can delve into the other writings."

Ylea nodded.

"Let's do it that way then - the sooner we understand this stuff, the sooner we'll be able to do something about it, right?"

It was hard to say if the enthusiasm in the elf's voice was manufactured or genuine at the prospect of doing such research.

Questions and Answers?
Two days passed while Ael translated the journal and the two researchers studied the items you had found below. All of you reconvened over a meal. Ael began explaining what she had turned up. Close to eighteen months ago Borug, cleric of Rovagug, was approached by a mysterious man. Borug was encouraged to to take solace beneath Absalom within a sanctum devoted to Lamashtu. He was plied with gifts over a weeks time and finally was convinced that to undertake the coup. Borug's coup was so successful in it's brutality that he became a favored champion of Rovagug.

Not long after the mysterious man returned claiming a favored was owed to him for his role in Borug's success. Borug complained of the tasked asked of him as he deemed them unworthy of his attention. He was first asked to seed the water system beneath the city with a powder the man delivered to him. He never quite understood the reason behind it or what the powder was but he complied. Lastly he was to undertake the ritual sacrifice of an innocent. That ritual had a specific time and date listed in the pages. The morning of the collapse.

Among a number of other entries, which weren't related to the aforementioned ritual, Ael found a hastily scrawled note. “He warned me of five interlopers. I'm to kill any of them that I meet. He passed along stones that should aid me against them. Though they seem less than useless to me...” No more information about the ritual can be found. You can only assume that it was conducted without being chronicled. The journal itself does end a week prior to the collapse.

Thomas and Ristan listened to the entries with rapt attention. They motioned to the stones that lay upon the table near five potions that presumably would send you back in time once more. ”We have spent some time with these stones. It is clear to us now that they are dispelling stones. Dispelling stones that are attuned to a special brand of magic. Should one of these stones be thrown at someone sent back through time they will instantly be returned to their own time.” Ristan said. ”The existence of these stones gives us one very important piece of information; someone knew that we would attempt to stop this from happening. They have taken steps to insure that no one past, present, or future can stop them. I can see no better chance to learn more about this plot then to travel back and attempt to stop this ritual and perhaps even find out the origins of this powder that was dispensed into the water system and probably the most important of all would to be ascertain the identity of this mysterious unnamed man.” the older wizard took a drink from his waterskin apparently finished with his speech.

Rum let out his breath in dismay somewhat... "So... they already knew about us in the past... probably someone coming from the future... Still.. would those stones work on someone else ? it might be worth that we carry them just in case someone comes from the future to stop us, we might be able to give them their own medicine".

He rubbed his hair massaging his skull "Anyway, I don't see much that we can do or plan, other than trying to go back then and see if we can get to these guys..."

Ylea nodded, her eyes alight with a cold determination.

"Indeed, we should stop this man from carrying out his plan in the past, and capture him if we can; then we'll make him give us all the answers we need. One who engineered a catastrophe like this deserves as much suffering as we can deliver."

She then glanced at the stones, and added:

"But I'm not sure that we should bring those along with us; if they get stolen, we'd be arming our enemies with the best way to dispose of us. I think that unwise."

The elf seemed to think the matter over for one moment more, then she turned back to the others and asked:

"So, do we have a precise time and place for their first meeting? I feel like it'd be best to strike at that time if we want to be certain that we're keeping the plot from unfolding at all."

From the journal it would seem the only concrete dates are for the ritual. The rest are entered in chronologically but without much to indicate exact times. Theoretically you'd be able to go back and find this Borug and removing him from the equation. Thomas interjects "Were we to find Borug and kill him sometime before the ritual there is no way of knowing if another would be able to conduct it in his place. I believe the most beneficial course would be to interrupt the proceedings leaving no time for back-up plan to succeed." Ristan offers some advice about the stones "The stones can give you two advantages. One would be sending back anyone who has travelled to the past to prevent you changing the outcomes. Secondly you would be able to send yourselves back prematurely should you find yourself in a no win situation. They could be used to prevent your demise." he said.

Rum nodded "Yes... I say we take them... if you want I'll keep them.. but I think it's best if each takes one just in case" he was pacing nervously around the room... for the first time he started to see a possible problem starting to form in his mind.

"One question though... and don't get me wrong... but wouldn't it be wiser to accept this as our present ? I mean... we will never be sure of having defeated whatever or whomever is doing this, for now we are sure they are moving to the past, and there is no way of knowing which 'version' of them is doing so, so there could be another one going on... hmm say I go to the past to a point I was already in the past, you come to that point, and kill the future me... nothing guaranties that the past me won't go on to do again the same, and I am not sure you'd be able to kill the past me (if I were the cause) because then, all the events would have never produced..."

"Anyway, its kind of crap to think this way, lets just move and do it"

In reply to DM (msg # 185):

Ylea frowned, then said to the two wizards:

"This Borug guy is meaningless; he's just a patsy, removing him just means our opponents will find another, one we don't know. The mysterious man is the one we need to catch, and he wasn't present for the ritual, was he?"
