I also played a few of the books as a kid, played in a very short run game here.... got as far as character gen and then about a months worth of posting before it sank.

Not had any other experience with AFF apart from that

Re: Out of Character Chat

Cool. The reason I asked was that while it is unlikely to have much of an impact this adventurer playing a hero with a past can have an in game impact. For instance the hero of City of Thieves and the hero of Midnight Rogue (almost certainly two different people) both left their mark on Port Blacksand and people would remember them in that city. Also I might end up adapting one of the gamebooks into an adventure so good to know if it is one people have read before.

Still waiting on more players though!

I did have one player show interest but he owns the Riddling Reaver so knows the twists and turns unfortunately. Maybe he can join in the future.

I can probably adapt this to work with three characters if we have to.

Re: Out of Character Chat

In reply to The Gamesmaster (msg # 9):

a few options:

- That guy could play a character, but you could adapt the story to make significant changes from the original.
- you could NPC some of the adventurers until new players appear.
- some players could have 2 PCs.

Not saying any of these are good suggestions, but thought I would throw them out there!

If we're in no hurry to start we could always wait a few more days, or a full week so you can bump the advert. Fine by me!

Thanks, I'm accepting him. :) Just waiting on a character choice.

So it looks like we have at least three. I'll wait until the weekend and if we don't get anyone new I'll draft in an NPC (luckily there actually is a suitable NPC in the adventure I can beef up for the role.)

Hullo!  I used to love the FF books, so this will be an amazing walk down memory lane for me!  I'm really excited!

Since the elves know each other, shall we link our two backgrounds, Mannath?

Then we'll just need to figure out how the two pairs met and became such awesome road buddies.  : )

I think that because this is Fighting Fantasy, we can aim for quite a camp and pulpy backstory?

Um...Mannath stumbled across and rescued Tarrian from some evil lair?  She was chained in the treasure room, and he picked the lock to her shackles rather than the treasure chest?  They fled together, and ever since she has sworn herself to protect him.

Lol, I'm from Worcestershire, so it looks like we are a load of Brits and one Paddy! Excellent, and unusual for rpol which tends to be dominated by Merkins.

Happy with the background ideas. To clarify: I rescued Tarrian from a monster's lair then some time later we rescued the Elfy brothers from a baying mob then got drunk with them in the pub. Sounds good to me!

Yes a full UK team... very unusual but a nice change I always find it difficult in games where most if not all are in the states... the time difference really buggers up the game for me sometimes .... When I log on two or three pages of posts have gone by while I've slept and it takes a lot of effort to catch up.

Mr GM sir, first dice roll and magic has been done :)

I do not know if you have GMd on rpol before, but you can set the dice roller to the standard rolls for the system, which of course in this case is "2D6". Just saves everyone a few seconds selecting two drop-downs because they are already selected.

By the way I wanted to check with people whether they think their characters are literate.

Vithrain obviously is a wizard and thus literate by defenition and since Elstarir is his brother he is likely to be literate to.

Tarrian (as a barbarian) and Mannath (as an ex-street rat) might or might not be able to read and write. It can be characterful and isn't a huge disadvantage but if you prefer I'll just assume you picked it up somewhere. :)

Re: Out of Character Chat

A question to all:

Should we now just post normally rather than via PMs, as there are now 3 PCs in the same room? This would be easier to manage (Group PMs are a pain in the arse on an iPad) and we can all promise not to metagame.

Also, GM, I asked Carolina some questions which I guess she couldn't read as they were in PMs.

Personally I always obey the Golden Rule (as we call it in LARP) - I would have been fine had you all been talking in thread the entire time - and actually all the PMs were narking me somewhat.

So feel free to ditch the PMs and go public. I'll be inside the tower as soon as the GM posts anyway. :)

Yes. If people want to remain unspoiled they can look away from your character's post, then refer back to it when they actually reach your level.

For reference:

Vithrian and the soldiers are about to enter the Ground Floor.
Maanath, Lady Carolina and (I presume) Tarrian are on the First Floor.
Elstarir is on the Second Floor about to go up to the Roof.

My copy of Crown of Kings arrived from Amazon today. The book is the official Advanced Fighting Fantasy version of the Sorcery! gamebooks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sorcery!) It's an interesting looking campaign but I'm not sure if I could run your characters through it, at least just yet since it takes place on another continent!

Any of you guys ever play through the Sorcery! books (The Shamutanti Hills; Khare: Cityport of Traps; The Seven Serpents and The Crown of Kings)? They were probably my favourite of the whole Fighting Fantasy line. Very different and very colourful.

Lady Carolina is the wife of Baron Bluestone, the ruler of Kallamehr. While you haven't met her IC yet Captain Jafar did mention her. She is also the beautiful woman you glimpsed. She was originally an NPC (which is why she isn't in the RTJ) but is now a PC in her own right.

While you haven't strictly entered the room yet there isn't really any space to hide and get a good view of what is happening on the first floor since Captain Jafar went fully through the trapdoor and into the room above you.

Uh, Elstarir that isn't how attacks work.

You roll your Attack Strength (your SKILL + weapon skill + 2d6) then roll your opponent's Attack Strength (its SKILL + weapon skill, if any + 2d6). Whoever has the higher total wins that round and you roll for damage, then roll to see if armour negates any damage.

Its my age it takes a few smacks of the mace on the back of the head for the rules to set in now a days.

Just so I got tit completely When I roll to hit I roll the snake and the winner does the damage. Do you the GM then roll for the snake's turn and again the winner rolls the damage or is the roll I've posted cover both snake and PC attacks and all I have to do is roll again for both in the next turn

I promise I'll sit down and read the rules again tonight too :o)

Your roll covers both the snakes attacks and you. I'll post some descriptive text about the fight, then you do Round 2. :)

Generally when facing normal monsters without lots of special powers I think it works a lot faster to have the player do the rolls each round. Since the Giant Snake is 'merely' an huge man Elf eating snake I'll let you manage it.

Okay, this is pretty much the first fight with a high possibility of a PC dying so I thought I'd talk a little bit about how I'd handle character death.

If your STAMINA drops to 0 you are unconcious and stand to lose 1 STAMINA point every round unless you successfully Test for Luck ("Guess it looked a lot worse than it was") or are stabilised by a character with the First Aid skill or healing magic (including a Potion of Stamina - I'm houseruling that another character can make an unconcious character swallow enough drops for it to take effect.)

If you reach -4 STAMINA you are dead. Generally in Allansia dead means dead so try to avoid that if possible.

(All of this nly applies to PCs btw - monsters on 0 STAMINA are dead as a very dead doornail.)

Actually Fighting Fantasy elves 'only' live for a couple of centuries or so. ;)

(Mind you considering the average human in Allansia is lucky to hit forty with disease, evil cults, orcs, monsters and regular old fashioned war going on hitting two hundred is pretty impressive.)

Okay... Elstarir I see the Giant Snake has defeated you two attack rounds in a row. Not great news.

The original adventure states that if the Snake scores two hits in sucession it swallows it's prey and that prey will quickly die which I think is a little on the harsh side. We can handle this a couple of ways:

- Elstarir does die and you start with a new character.

Or

- The Snake swallows you but if you successfully Test vs. Luck you survive but can't attack and must roll for damage taken while in the monster's belly. If the fight lasts another round you Test vs. Luck again and take damage again. If you fail a Luck test Estarir dies.

A note on the map: obviously there are other places in the city besides those marked on the map but those are 'points of interest' for you to check out first.

You are actually staying in the luxurious Golden Tower inn off the Market Square - not labled on the map but just beneath the 'Square of Patriarchs' label. The Parrot in a Cage Inn on the other hand is a bit of a notorious dive.

What am I?

A white-winged fish that parts the waves
I ply the sparkling waste.
I'm bound by ropes, and pulled by cloth,
Lest merchants lose their haste.

Where am I?

My first is in south but not in north;
My second is in picture but not in play;
My third is in fourth and also in worth;
My fourth is in book and also in cook;
My fifth is in toe but not in sew;
My sixth is in life but not in death;
And together I'm found where children abound.

Do we agree this refers to the nautical academy?  We're looking for a ship at the nautical academy.

What am I?

And bound with iron bonds;
What I carry always raises a cheer.
Murder have I not done;
Stolen not; cheated not;
Yet a peg is beaten into my head

Where am I?

My coat is green and I can speak
Of several things, but mostly cheek.
In such a prison I am set
That has more loopholes than a net.

What am I?

I've neither top nor bottom,
Yet I hold bone and skin;
I hardly ever make a noise,
And yet my name's a din.

Where am I?

Ill-matched is my visage to my frame -
Horns are on my head, the rest a hideous man;
By fume well known through all the Allansian lands;
From man and beast together is my name.

Hmmm.  That works (especially as we think the "what" is a coffin), but I'm not sure about the last line.

To me it sounded like a certain type of monster, like a minotaur (although I'm not sure about the fume, nor that everything about a minotaur save the horns is a "hideous man").  Is it possibly some other kind of monster native to the FF world?

Re: Out of Character Chat

The Gamesmaster:

You retrace your steps from the armoury and make your way to the market-square.

Even the death of Baron Bluestone does not prevent the traders making their daily living, and the market-square is busy. Exotic goods, fine cloths and succulent foodstuffs adorn shops, stalls, carts and barrows. Business is brisk, and the locals have little time to take notice of strangers, though the Tarrian draws a glance or two; barbarian warroresses are rare even in cosmopolitan Kallamehr.

As you pass through the throng, a cry goes up. The crowds part as a lanky, ill-formed youth shoulders his way through, wildly swinging a vicious looking cudgel. Behind him, sprawled in a quivering heap, you can see a rich merchant. There is no room to draw a sword, and even if you did you would risk hurting innocent bystanders.

OOC: The thief is making directly for you, aiming to squeeze through the packed crowd and get away. If you try and avoid him Test for Luck. If you succeed he ignores you, if you fail he clips you with his cudgel (take 2 STAMINA points of damage) on his way through.

If you want to stop him you'll have to fight him without weapons (he might not care his swings smack a bystander in the face but you aren't going to accidently gut some civilian with a stray sword sweep). Fight with -4 to your Attack Strength since you have to rely on your fists and the odd headbutt. Temporarily replace your damage roll with this:

Unarmed Attack: 1 1 1 1 1 2

Tarrian still adds + 1 from Strongarm Talent.

LARGO THE SWIFT
SKILL 6 STAMINA 10

Armour: None
Attack: 1 2 2 2 3 3

I don't want to kill the thief: with unarmed combat will we give him full damage (until death) or he will be just stunned and unconscious, but still alive?

BTW, if there is no way to avoid killing Largo, Chadda fights with knives, so she should be able to draw them?

(Also remember you reduce your LUCK by 1 every time you test it - your LUCK is down to 6.)

Handmaiden: You more or less are trying to grapple him; hence the -4 unarmed penalty. There certainly isn't room to pile up on top of him, this is a deadly melee in the midst of a panicking, moving crowd.

Re: Out of Character Chat

quote:
Heroes will often face foul creatures and evil monsters in combat, and the battle is resolved as follows:

1: The Player rolls two 6-sided dice (2D6) and adds the result to his SKILL and any appropriate special skill. This is the Hero’s attack total.

2: The Director rolls two 6-sided dice and adds the result to the monsters SKILL. This is the monster's attack total.

3: Which ever combatant has the highest attack total wins that combat round. If both totals are the same, both fighters have avoided each others blows and the combat round ends.

4: The winner of the combat round rolls one 6-sided die and looks at the appropriate weapon chart on their Hero sheet or given in the adventure for the monster. The result from that chart is the amount of STAMINA damage inflicted on the opponent.

5: The loser also rolls one 6-sided die and looks at the armour chart on their Hero sheet (if they have an armour that is!!) or given for the monster. The result from this chart is deducted from any damage, and whatever remains is deducted from their current STAMINA.

6: Progress to the next round of combat and repeat!  If any of the combatants reach 0 STAMINA, they will fall unconscious, and a monster can be considered to be dead.

This process will apply to combats between two opponents. If more than one enemy fights a single combatant, then the single combatant must declare which of his opponents he will attack. All combatants must roll attack totals as normal, although if the “extra” opponent has a higher attack total than the single combatant, he will inflict a wound. This “extra” combatant cannot however be injured if he has a lower total.

Am I right in saying that if two combatants have the same total (eg 15) then it will always and forever be a stand-off. There's absolutely no point in carrying on a fight if you have the same, because it will always be the same. Is that right?

No, it just means neither of you hurt the other in that round. In the next round you roll again.

So Largo beat Tarrian in round 1, but she might gain the upper hand in round 2. We start all over again, except Tarrian starts with less STAMINA.

Okay, now that Tarrian has piled in I need to check something:

- if I now attack and lose then I don't lose any STA as he has already wounded Tarrian, so doesn't get a 2nd bonus attack. Is this correct?
- do I need to modify his SKILL score as he is fighting multiple opponents?
- my dagger is designed for close range combat and is a stabbing weapon. Can I use it without penalty rather than using my puny fists?

No.

The adventure as published doesn't give that option and to be honest I can see why (aside from balance arguements). If the square is so jampacked you can't draw a weapon safely you'd have to very careful with that dagger to avoid hitting Tarrian while she is fighting Largo and probably Elstarir if he is fighting too.

You can do it but if you miss I'll be having you Test for Luck to see if that blade hits someone.

Re: Out of Character Chat

Okay there seems to be some confusion over the combat rules.

To begin with only the person the NPC is directly fighting rolls their Attack Strength. In this case that would Tarrian so you use the number she rolled for Largo.

Handmaiden: Remember your Attack Strength = 2d6 + SKILL + appropriate weapon skill. In this particular case you aren't using a weapon so don't add a weapon skill and you are unarmed facing a foe with a weapon so deduct -4 from your Attack Strength.

Elstarir: You forgot to deduct -4 from your Attack Strength for being unarmed.

In order to avoid making mistakes, I'd prefer just rolling the 2d6 and let you make the adjustments and calculate the outcomes. Is it OK with you?

Chadda actually did some damage with her kick from last round (although not this round).

23:17, Wed 20 Feb: The Handmaiden rolled 11 using 2d6. Kick Largo.

Largo's attack strength in that round was just 9.  So Chadda should roll 1d6 and see how much damage she did to him:

Unarmed Attack: 1 1 1 1 1 2

(i.e. if Chadda rolls 1-5, she does 1 damage.  If she rolls a 6, she does 2 damage!)

Agreed. The Minotaur is not our primary objective at present. We could sell the information to the merchant if we find anything interesting and let him hire someone else to find it. If we actually encounter it I might go to the market to but new trousers after I make a mess of mine...!

I suggest for now we keep investigating the market for shopping ideas and clues...

Isn't a minotaur the answer to this riddle?

Ill-matched is my visage to my frame -
Horns are on my head, the rest a hideous man;
By fume well known through all the Allansian lands;
From man and beast together is my name.

Vithrain, I'm going to need you to make a LUCK Test and a Magic Lore Test for me.

May I enquire as to what for?

I thought I had my rolls all covered in my previous post? Magic to boost skill (pass), skill to duck out the way (fail), luck to minimize the damage to 1 (pass) and then the reaction of grabbing the horn, talking to the beast and tell it to let me onto its back and flee.

However, if that isn't enough and these are for something else:

20:48, Today: Vithrain rolled 5 using 2d6. Luck test. Target 7. Pass
20:52, Today: Vithrain rolled 9 using 2d6. Magic test. Target = 10. Pass

Re: Out of Character Chat

Actually Vithrain those rolls were for different reasons which I'll elaborate on IC.

Also it's generally not possible to just duck out of a fight with a successful SKILL roll; you need to win an Attack Round to get out of a fight without damage or accept an automatic wound. I'll ignore the rule this time since you already acted ahead but next time will be different.

Re: Out of Character Chat

In your case LUCK is the better option. You do loose a point of LUCK whichever way the roll goes but LUCK gets restored to its initial level at various points.

You never lose a point of SKIll just for testing it - you should only lose SKILL due to permanent injury (loosing a finger or eye) or something like a magical curse or a wasting disease.

Which gives me an idea or two, heh, heh, heh...

XP allows you to buy new special skills, improve old ones or improve your SKILL or MAGIC score. So not really a leveling up, more a general improvement.

I'll be giving a much expanded special skill list later on btw; you guys are currently a little bare bones since we are using the quick start rules.

Since this is a preset adventure I'm awarding XPs at the end of each Act - currently you are still in Act One. I'm not going to railroad you guys though; if things radically depart from the adventure I'll adapt. :)

It was great. Though I realise one of the reasons I only had one child. We took three of ems friends so I had to keep control of four hyped up nine year old girls.

Luckily we got there early so were waiting about 15 min per ride until lunch time then everyone else turned up and you were suddenly waiting an hour or so per ride.

Anyway the girls fleesed the wife and me out of a cuddly dog each but I thought ahead and made a picnic for us all so we didn't get stung for food.

Also used out tesco points to get the tickets so it only cost £7 per head rather than the usual £30 I think it is now. You could also buy a que buster but that was £15 ahead so it would have cost £90 to go to the front..... It's a lovely place to go had a great time but its a bloody rip off

Re: Out of Character Chat

Sounds great, if exhausting and expensive. Good thinking with the picnic! :)

You can drop your bow and draw a weapon with no penalty but obviously you'll have to win the fight to be able to retrive it later. Slinging the bow around your back and drawing a weapon will leave you unable to attack but able to parry (you cause no damage if you win the first attack round.)

You can use your bow as a weapon - use your basic SKILL and the Staff damage table.  If you roll a double 6 the bow will break (the wood is of good quality and craftsmanship but not really intended to be used as a melee weapon.)

Do we need to post all the OOC stuff in the thread?  I mean like the dice rolls and stuff?

Yes, thanks.  Not an ironclad rule but I find it sort of helpful to keep track.

(If for any reason you want to keep an action secret PM me.)

Elstarir swung at his one with a bow - I know he rolled a few roles, but I'm not sure - does your text cover that attack? (I guess he thinks it does not as the last th ing he said to me was he waiting for the GM to say how his attack went and what happens next)

I'll send him a text to get him to grab five mins on the comp :D

Re: Out of Character Chat

Yeah I think it was a mutal miscommunication. :)

He made rolls and the barbarian he was fighting won, so I sort of assumed the damage he rolled represented the blow of the barbarian's axe.

Actually which way do you guys want to handle damage the PC takes in 'ordinary' combat? In her last post Tarrian lost the combat round and wrote in taking a blow to the head (luckily being a barbarian she doesn't have much to damage up there ;).  I'm cool with that way of doing things but if anyone prefers I can describe the specific damage you take.

Re: Out of Character Chat

Personally I would prefer to narate things myself, but with maybe a nudge - so if you are narrating say "Vithrain, you failed that roll so will need to narrate damage".

I say that, because there is also the "Luck" get-out-clause that means that you can spend a Luck to negate the damage down to 1. If you've already narrated worse damage than that it breaks the flow for me to then say "actually...."

That's just my opinion though :)

Sounds fair. :)

Generally speaking if a combat has some special factor in play (such as a fight against a Giant Snake where there is a chance of being swallowed alive) I'll ask you take the appropriate saving throw (normally a Test vs. LUCK) before dealining with damage narration.

Re: Out of Character Chat

I like the separate posts.

Just one thing - did you edit an earlier post regarding the cat and minotaur....it's just that I read the latest post and was like "huh!? she's already defeated him?? when!??" then had to scroll back and re-read earlier posts to find out that she'd already beaten the minotaur to a pulp (before my last PM to the GM!)

I may have tried to act while invisible BEFORE she jumped out of the ring had I seen that change...

Now I'll have to either leave her be and help my friends/brother, or act blooming quick to get the ring before my 3minute spell runs out.

{edit} Of course it could just be that I didn't see the first few lines of text...I read about the fighter woman going wide eyed then backing away....but not the bit before that....so it probably was my own fault. However the individual posts would work better for me.

Re: Out of Character Chat

I'm enjoying the game - a small enough group at a reasonable pace so easy to keep up, even if someone is absent for a couple of days. Many games on rpol are either too fast or too slow. I started in a game a while ago (Alien space marines type game) where some players were posting 4/5 times per day, and the GM was trying to keep at their pace. At one point I was trying to kit up and get out of the airlock and other players were down the corridor fighting an unseen enemy. So my guy (the squad 2ic) was still farting around getting his suit on! Not very realistic... I complained to the GM but he did nothing about it so I bailed.

So yes! Still happy and keen to keep going as we are...

Above them there seems to be some confusion as Tarrian makes for the hole in the wall rather than the sewers leaving Vithrain with a very quick choice to make: follow the barbarian warrioress or take his chances down the trapdoor...

Forgive me if I'm being a bit dim... but Tarrian said she was cover our escape route, and said "Everyone down the trapdoor!" - so she knows our exit route is the trapdoor, and my reading of her protecting it would be to move a few paces towards the main entrance - NOT the new hole in the wall.

Unless of course there was a private line to the GM saying otherwise....?

Yah!  I didn't understand that the trap door could be closed from the inside, I thought the drop was too far.  So I secretly volunteered to be the last through, I was going to close it on you lot and then take my chances!  I know, I know, I'm a heroine.

However Vithrain did shut it from within, somewhat trivialising my noble act of sacrifice, but I wrote my next post so that Tarrian stayed behind to cover your tracks better, so all's well.

Us Elves are very nimble, but I know that I could easily hold on to the edge of the hole with one hand (feet braced against the shafts edge) and pull the trapdoor mostly closed with the other so it rests on my head, then use the other hand to grab the handful of dirt and throw it up, while letting go with hands and feet and thus both me and the door dropping down, followed by the straw.

Dexterity is how we Elves are built :)

Be safe, and see you back there (we'll need some showers so see to that please!? :D )

The tunnels you are in are about a meter and half wide and two meters high. Those two in front are about to be attack by the Giant Rats and will no longer be able to use missile weapons. Those at the back can step in to relieve their frontline comrades but otherwise are not in direct combat.

OOC: Everyone regain 2 LUCK points for having gained the Minotaur nose ring and escaped. This cannot take you over your initial LUCK score.

I'm assuming everyone is willing to leave the sewers at this point.

Okay, I am totally puzzled how we got the nose ring!!!! I saw the cat woman disappear into shadows with it!

And yes, very happy to have 2 luck back and also get out of the stench. Though Vithrain needs to wash his legs off sharpish.

To summarise our riddling...

quote:
What am I?

A white-winged fish that parts the waves
I ply the sparkling waste.
I'm bound by ropes, and pulled by cloth,
Lest merchants lose their haste.

Where am I?

My first is in south but not in north;
My second is in picture but not in play;
My third is in fourth and also in worth;
My fourth is in book and also in cook;
My fifth is in toe but not in sew;
My sixth is in life but not in death;
And together I'm found where children abound.

Hail and Faire Greetings,

Greetings and well met New Tarrian.

Avatar is sweet :)

Well now, I forget how we got into this adventure, but suffice it to say we are looking for a number of objects to which we have a ton of riddles.

We have the nose ring of the minotaur and we just landed up outside the nautical academy where we will be searching for a ship of some kind (yes, yes, I know...but I'm guessing it will become blatantly obvious which ship when we find trouble...!"

However Vithrain needs a wash and a sleep to gain back his magic as he is exhausted physically and mentally.

Re: Out of Character Chat

In reply to Tarrian (msg # 426):

Hi Tarrian, welcome to the game!

Brief history:

Mannath (that's me) and Tarrian are old friends and have adventured together for a while (no hanky panky, just mates!) before ending up in Kallamehr. There we got involved in an attempt to rescue Baron Bluestone from the clutches of evil wizard Cora Nundrum, along with two elves we had just met (Elstarir and Vithrain, who are brothers). We failed, and he died. However, Lady Carolina (Baron's wife) was grateful for our aid in rescuing her.

We are trying to track down Nundrum, who has left a series of riddles. We have solved one, and found the minotaurs ring. Next we are off the the nautical academy. We got separated from Tarrian and will try to find her at the palace. Myself, Lady Carolina's handmaiden (Chadda), and the elves are stink after escaping through a sewer, and are in need of a bath.

Chadda and Lady Carolina are becoming NPCs for the time being as the player is absent for a couple of months with RL stuff, so that leaves 4 PCs, including you.

So the next scene will be us meeting up again and you complaining that we smell like... well... shit!

Hope this makes sense. GM, feel free to correct me in case I have gotten it wrong.

10:08, Today: Vithrain rolled 9 using 2d6. Magic Points 4 + Lore 2 = 6 vs.

but this is assuming I am still "unrested" as so down to 4 magic points, despite the bath. I am **roleplaying** it that until I have **slept** I am still unrested.

Actually this more of a magical knowledge test than a magical power test; your points are down for the purposes of spellcasting but not for analysing the use of magic by others.

Real Life RPG group, playing (currently) D&D 3.5e;

On RPOL:
  GMing a game of Legend: Ancient Stones (my own setting) (Elstarir's player plays in this);
  Playing in Mutants & Masterminds 3e - Hudson City, The Urban Abyss;
  Playing in The World of Wolsung (with Elstarir's player);

On RPGGeek:
  Playing in Lasers & Feelings: Sapphire Lasers of True Love;
  Playing in D&D 1e - Lost City;
  Playing in Lady Blackbird - Through the Depths (follow up to LB that I GM'd there);
  Playing in Serenity - Lost in the Black;
  Playing in D&D 1e Caverns of Thracia (though this is on a major break atm due to the GM having major real life problems. Hopefully it will restart next year sometime)

So that's 7 active plus one inactive.
I also have another M&M game that will be starting this month sometime!

I also plan to start a Maelstrom Domesday campaign on the Geek sometime soon :)

Re: Out of Character Chat

With today I'm starting a break that will last few months, however, I'm playing only this game on RPOL (the rest I quit), while I'm GMing two: First steps into adventure (AFF quickstart), where I found a very kind co-GM while I'm away, and Desthrap Dungeon (solo) where I stopped accepting new players and the current competitors are all dead (happens, in the Deathrap Dungeon).
I used to play in 6 games and GM 5 at RPOL, but obviously I progressively reduced them as I'm travelling a lot in the next future, with unlikely access to internet.
I'm also playing three games in the Comeback Inn and one at www.librogame.net, all of which I just left and I'll rejoin in few months.

It's a pretty cool book (though maybe more use for a GM rather than a player despite the name.)  New magic, talents, rules for hirelings and running domains and holdings (ie baronies, thieves guilds etc.) Plus the mass combat rules.

think carefully:

What am I?

My belly is round
And bound with iron bonds;
What I carry always raises a cheer.
Murder have I not done;
Stolen not; cheated not;
Yet a peg is beaten into my head

Where am I?

Exactly... lucky you were given one earlier:

The Gamesmaster:
The youth who'd been running the shell game looked at Elstarir, then and Mannath and very reluctanly sat back down. Looking rather pale he asked the tavern in general:<i><Serif>"Uh... would anyone like a second go?"

Meanwhile his comrade in arms seems even happier to oblige, babbling profuse apologies to the barmaid and reaching for his purse with his free arm.  The barmaid let him go and turned a pleased but mystified expression to Vithrain.

After explanations (which take a long time - half orcs are not that fast on the uptake) the barmaid walks over to speak with the innkeeper. She returns to your table a moment later, smiling. "Asculf decided to give you something for spotting those cheats; how does a keg of dwarven ale sound? Shipped all the way Port Blacksand just yesterday."

So not the Tower, but rather the Parrot in a Cage Inn.  Though I know not what the 'loophole' reference kicks in in.  Loopholes are the holes in a defensive stronghold that you shoot arrows out of.  Thus my thought it was the Tower.  Are also used as jails also.  Like the Tower of London.

Re: Out of Character Chat

Okay I've posted a thread for experience points and what you can buy here (link to a message in this game). I'll get to the actual experience points giving out in a moment.

I'm trying to bring everyone's characters into line with the more advanced rules rather than the stripped down hybrid we've been playing with, which mostly means giving you special skills your characters always had but never used.

Elstarir: Add the following Special Skills to your character sheet with 1 point in each: Armour, Dodge, Forest Lore, Hunting, Languages: Elvish.

Mannath: Add the following Special Skills to your character sheet with 1 point in each: Armour, City Lore: Port Blacksand, Dodge, Lock Picking, World Lore.

Tarrian: Add the following Special Skills to your character sheet with 1 point in each: Armour, Dodge, Hunting, Plains Lore, Religion Lore.

Vithrain: Add the following Special Skills to your character sheet with 1 point in each: Forest Lore, Language: Elvish, Magic: Minor, Religion Lore, Second Sight..

Some of these Special Skills are self explanatory, but to clarify:

Armour: Allows you to wear armour without penalty.  The higher your Armour Special Skill the higher value armour you can wear.

City Lore: Is knowledge of one particular city - Port Blacksand or Kallamehr for instance.

Dodge: Is used to... well dodge things outside combat such as falling boulders or runaway horses.

Hunting: Catching or trapping food to eat in the wilderness.

Forest Lore: Basic woodland survival skills.

Language: Knowledge of an additional language (by default everyone already knows Language: Common Speech.)

Plains Lore: As Forest Lore but for plains.

Religion Lore: A grasp of the gods, mythology and religious ritual.

Second Sight: Allows the character to 'see' magical effects - the traces of a recently cast spell for instance.

World Lore:  Basically common knowledge - who is the current king of Chalice, where does the wizard Yatztromo live, etc, etc.

Yes.

A shield provides bonuses to your armour roll on top of the armour you are already wearing (in Tarrian's case a Leather Cuirass).

Small Shield Armour Roll: +0 +0 +0 +0 +1 +1
Large Shield Armour Roll: +0 +0 +0 +1 +1 +1

So Tarrian with her Leather Cuirass and a Large Shield would have the following Armour roll in combat: 0 0 0 1 2 2

A Large Shield costs 12 gold pieces and a Small Shield costs 5 gold pieces.

The Handmaiden:
On this occasion we can take with us (well covered while we are in town) the shield of Rangor... can we?

Ooh... that hadn't occurred to me to be honest. My initial reaction would be no - it is a priceless artefact of the city and even in the cause of avenging the Baron it would be hard to see the Kallemehrans easily letting it go to a group mostly composed of foreigners on a long expedition.

Mannath:
Okay, a couple of things:

1-Sure
2-Cool. :)
3-Make a Religion Special Skill roll (or seek out a priestess of Mirala.)

Hmm, I'd planned to go straight into Act 2 but I can see I might need an Interlude to tie up loose ends.

You never did answer my question about Provisions.

The Gamesmaster:
A shield provides bonuses to your armour roll on top of the armour you are already wearing (in Tarrian's case a Leather Cuirass).

Small Shield Armour Roll: +0 +0 +0 +0 +1 +1
Large Shield Armour Roll: +0 +0 +0 +1 +1 +1

A Large Shield costs 12 gold pieces and a Small Shield costs 5 gold pieces.

Ok, Tarrian will take the Large Shield.  So your saying her Leather Cuirass and Large Shield stack, rather then having to make a roll for each seperately.  Ok, I guess if you say so.

Re: Out of Character Chat

Yes shields and worn armour stack.

Sorry I missed the question about provisions.  Provisions are an abstraction of the rations and drinking water you are carrying. In a wilderness/dungeon area you should be looking to consume a portion of provisions per day (in a city or village you can obviously find somewhere to eat.)  Eating provisions restores 2 STAMINA points and can be done up to twice a day.  Conversely going without provisions will cost you STAMINA (2 points per day.)

Aside from being purchased (4gp each - compare with a tavern meal that costs from 8sp to 2gp depending) you can also gain provisions via the following Special Skills:

Hunting
Desert Lore
Forest Lore
Mountain Lore
Plains Lore
Sea Lore

Um... okay but the rest of the party will be meeting Dappa there for the first time. It's not really a problem if you want Vithrain to do something else (and assume introductions are made offscreen) but I think you should know ahead of time.

I'd heard about it but haven't seen an episode.  To be honest I was sort of irrationally put off that series was set in Britain rather than Ireland.  Normally that wouldn't bother me in the least but the Irish media made a huge deal about it being filmed in Wicklow as an Irish co-production and starring one of our own (Gabriel Byrne).

Like I said I know I'm being completely irrational but I sort of view it as a missed opportunity.

Re: Out of Character Chat

What the people of Ireland need to make is a Movie about Brian Boru.  At least at the level of production that 'Braveheart' was made at.  I knew right after that movie came out in '95', a movie script based on Morgan Llywelyn's book, 'The Lion of Ireland' was being shopped around in Hollywood.  But nothing ever got green lighted.  I read that book when it first came out, in 82.  It is one of my all time favorites, right up there with LOTR.  If you haven't read it yet, you should.
Then last decade there was talk of Leonardo DiCaprio heading up a unrelated production in Ireland and taking the starring role.  But nothing came from it.

But you should really give 'Vikings' a viewing.

Anyway a portion of provisions costs 4gp while a cloak costs 3gp.

As for passing my the palace I wanted to skip that to move ahead onto the next stage of the adventure. No one gets the Shield of Rangor - it belongs to the city of Kallamehr and isn't going to be loaned to a group of adventurers, even ones on state business.

Add the appropriate special skill rank (in this case 1) to your SKILL (in this case 7), then roll two d6 and try and get under or equal the combined total (in this case 8). :)

Anyone who doesn't have a World lore special skill just roll against their base SKILL.

Magic users (that would be Dappa and Vithrain) can substitute their MAGIC score instead of their SKILL score for Lore rolls (World Lore, Sea Lore, Forest Lore, etc.)

Note the Minor Magic spells on your character sheet.  Remember they don't cost Magic Points to cast. :)

You have 50 XP. You don't have to spend it now now however. For a list of what to spend see here: link to a message in this game

What kind of milling?  I assume with this type of ship.  It would be done with a windmill.  Rather clever of them to see the application of wind power and building a means to harness it!  Just wonder, are we milling logs into lumber?  Or grain into flour?

Again I'd like to apologise for the quality of the scan but as I've said before I'm working with a very old copy of the book, which isn't very scan friendly anyway.

Okay, I've made the assumption that Mannath did not close the Forecastle door behind him so you are within earshot at least of him. You do have sufficent time to run to join him (or he to run and join you) before whatever is appraching arrives.

Oh and just to be clear Mannath is still outside location 4 - the door is dramatic enough looking I have to check before you enter it (or don't if you prefer). :)

Re: Out of Character Chat

Hello all,

It's been a long time and obviously I never managed to get around to restarting this game in 2015. Still, I've just been reading 'You Are The Hero' (the guide to Fighting Fantasy which by the way is an awesome read if you have ever played one of the gamebooks.) I was wondering if there is still any interest in some form of Fighting Fantasy? I'm not sure what form and it certainly won't be until well into January at least but I think it would be fun to have another go. If you are interested please respond - I'd be happy to hear ideas.

If not, well thank you for reading anyway and happy Christmas. :)

Very cool, I like Maelstrom. :)

Oh and Dappa I read the gazetter. Amazing job! :D

Okay I've been thinking and there are a few ways we can go. Like I said I've been looking at adapting some of the gamebooks and a few seem interesting. I've always liked Seas of Blood and having the PCs as pirates could be a lot of fun (so long as we could agree who is leader.)

I have Graham Bottley's AFF version of Crown of Kings which could be very cool (I'm a huge fan of Steve Jackson's Sorcery! books on which it is based.)

Another possibility is adapting the original AFF 1 adventures in Dungeoneer, Blacksand! and Allansia, all of which are worth a look.

Of course if any of you guys do have a preference for settings/adventures I'd love to hear them.

Re: Out of Character Chat

You can prepare an "abridged" (or completely alternative) version of the official adventure that we are are running, so we can *somehow* complete it in a reasonable timeframe.

Then it would be a good idea running an AFF2 conversion of the "old" adventure cycle (Dungeoneer-Blacksand!-Allansia) - and then propose the converted adventure (with all improvements from playtesting) to Arion Games (so our friend will have something to proofread!).

The only, minor problem is that the Dungeoneer adventure starts in Chalice, while the Riddling Reaver finished in the middle of the jungle... so you'll have to invent something to take us to Chalice.
I'm sure you'll find out something ;)

Cool. :) It is still very much at the ideas stage but I want to talk about the other forms of worship too - demon worship, shamanism 'hero/holy man' cults (think the worship of Dalgalla mentioned in Blacksand!)

I know I'm very late to the party but I'm finally getting around to reading the Fighting Fantazine issues too. Looks like good stuff.

Finally working on renewing/restarting our own game, hopefully early next month.

Re: Out of Character Chat

Happy Christmas all!

I know it has been a very long time since I've posted. Well the good news that I've finally finished the first draft of my book and am now trying to find an agent *crosses fingers*.

Also, and more importantly from your perspectives, I have been reading 'You Are The Hero' by Jonathan Green and am very much back in a Fighting Fantasy mood. I think realistically it would be best to begin with a fresh start in a new location and with new characters, at least if people are still interested.

My first idea is to adapt the old Advanced Fighting Fantasy adventures from Dungeoneer, Blacksand! and Allansia. The benefit is that they are already written, though I might have to tweak a few aspects to keep people familiar with the original material from knowing everything.

The second idea is much looser, and inspired by Midnight Rogue. The PCs are a branch of the Thieves Guild in Port Blacksand (though I can change the city if people prefer) dealing with the cutthroat world of being low level thieves in a vermin pit. Thisn't doesn't mean everyone will be Evil in D&D alignment terms but it wouldn't be a good place for would be paladins!

If anyone else has a suggestion I'll happily hear it!
