The date for the beginning of construction For Deep Shelter 210 Is recorded as December first 2126 .
in the first half of the 21sst century there had been several catastrophic incidents which had reduced the worlds population to one half its original 8 Billion people. The "Burning Sky" and sealing of the Shelters occurred on April 5th 2130.
in 2022 the yellow stone Super eruption occurred destroying crops, industrial capacity, and devastating much of the US and North America. As a result the Long Winter, occurred in which advancement not only stopped but technology actually regressed as a result. It took 70 years to reach the level of advancement to which the world had been at before the long night.
A great Second renascence occurred in the 2090s resulting in a huge advancement in many long stagnant technologies including the first interstellar probes which arrived at the nearest star system in 2119. And he establishment of permanent colonies on the moon and small long term colonies on Mars in 2101
To insure that further "Long Winter" incidents did not cause a near century long dark age, many countries created "Deep Shelters" that could survive any foreseeable disaster and preserve not only people, but the means to recover and rebuild from global catastrophe. Each shelter housed thousands, was self contained and self sufficient and housed factories and stock piles of resources to rebuild critical systems after the event had passed and it was safe to leave the Shelters again.
A shelter had an expected life span of ten years without outside resources, and would house those with sufficient skills to reseed surface civilization, and resupply vital resources within years of being allowed to leave the shelters.
It was planned that Shelters could use internal resources to venture outside and support one another or establish limited surface operations before the resettlement of the population at large with a fleet of vehicles and heavy equipment stored in each vault. to insure this a hard wired, shielded and reinforced communication network supervised by AI assistants was created linked by geosynchronous high powered satellites that could pierce any expected dust or debris layer to establish voice communication at the very least.
In extreme cases it was projected that with rationing, diligent recycling, and inter cooperation, the shelters could survive up to fifty years in their sealed state. however 20 years was the maximum expected duration of stay in the shelters.
However after the Shelter were sealed all communications were interrupted, and scout teams sent to the surface failed to return or returned dying from an unknown wasting disease that twisted their bodies and drove many to insanity. as a result shelter 210 was isolated and no news of surface conditions or the status of other shelters has been available since the shelter was sealed.
Without Outside resource the shelter has began to deteriorate rapidly, vital systems are at their limits, and break downs occur on a near daily basis. with the Shelter reaching nearing the 20 year duration mark It is unlikely the Shelter can sustain it's population without outside assistance for more than a few years.
