Nice background Parthenogenesis. Got anything I can "reveal" to go along with it, or will that be saved until after we get going?

Also, just a reminder that you haven't written up a description. When you're in the flow and inspiration hits, click on over to that page and see what you can come up with.

Oh, and I think the pic goes well.

Very nice backgrounds guys. Love your work. It's a shame I can't share any of it yet. It's that good.

Just so you know, there are only a couple more wrinkles to iron out before we kick off. I feel like I'm just about there working out the mechanics.

Until then, fine tune what you have and keep working with me behind the scenes.

Thank you very much.

A RAHT is a Rocket Assisted Hover Transport.

A WASP is a White Anglo Saxon Protestant (so I've been told). It's actually also a RAHT, but for a single to double rider; A motorbike equivalent for the air, named for its appearance. I figured the WASP can be something like Weaponized Air Strike Prototype.  Got any better ideas for this acronym, I'll hear them out.

Hate to do a pre-start with a name and shame, but I feel I might have to here, just to kick it off. Okay, just the shaming.

There is someone who still has not done their skills yet. I think you know who you are. Let's pretend that you're interested enough to do a little work here. Not only have the other two noobs done their skills, but they've also done a bit of background as well. Oops, did that just out you?

Thanks to the other two, by the way. I'd rather not kick things off until we're all ready though.

Re: OOC

I do have to acknowledge, however, that the person I just shamed has done a fantastic description for their character, found in The Cast. I encourage everyone to check this section out.

Speaking of descriptions, I know that some will want to include a picture in their descriptions. I have added a HOW TO place a picture in your posts/description below.

How to put a picture in.

What you'll want to do is first is get a Photobucket account on photobucket.com. Upload any images you want in your album. You may need to scour Google first to find what you're looking for.

First - Quote this message.
Copy everything from <table to table>
Paste into your post/description/etc.
Change the text as needed.

Then - go back to the Photobucket album that you'll have up in a second tab.
Hover the mouse over the picture.
A drop down box will show up with 4 links. Choose the last one. Click on it and it will automatically copy (if it doesn't copy, just do your normal right click copy)
Back to the post - paste in place of the img that I have, everything in between the quotes.
Delete any [IMG] in front and back of that link. It should start with "http: and end in jpg" (or png or bmp if that's what you had it saved as before loading. Stick with jpg for best results.

Preview to be sure it looks right.

A good place to put text. If you want it on the other side of your picture, there is another td spot below the picture link.

Okay Newbies, there's a new thread just for you guys. It's going to serve as our tutorial. We'll play it out and I'll give pointers within the thread. I've set the scene for you, so it's anyone's go.

Before you post, a couple of things please. Instead of clicking on [reply] in my post, hit the Post a Reply button at the bottom right of the window. This keeps things cleaner and helps with the flow. There's lesson 1.

Lesson two is: pick a color for your speech. Just so's you know, purple and red are already taken. Any time your character speaks, it should look something like this, including quotes: "Wouldn't be dead for quids, Love."

I encourage you to go back to the Rules and Guidelines notice to get a quick overview on how this should all go down.

Happy posting.

Just a suggestion that I'd like to know if everybody has consensus on.... if GM wants a perception roll or an insight roll from a character... I think it is best if he simply rolls it himself and tells us the roll and the result....

That is faster... I have no objection to rolls being made for me... what do others think?

Re: OOC

In reply to Quiksit (msg # 72):

Especially in the RuneQuest system there are times for the GM to roll for the characters, but it's usually rare.  Those cases are when the character won't necessarily see the results right away, or because whatever their skill is involved in will produce results that belie the reality.

Here are some examples from the book when the GM might roll for a character (though, as with everything- final arbiter of decisions is the GM):

The character using the skill would have little or no way of
knowing how successful his skill attempt has been until it is
put to a practical test.

The skill’s outcome is not immediate.

Revealing the outcome of the Skill Test incrementally will
create a better sense of tension.

So basically for all other rolls, that's on us.  One last little opinion: I run my own game on RPoL as well and there's tons of work involved.  If I had to do every single roll for every character, it might start to seem like a job in very short order.  If everybody is mostly responsible for their own stuff, and I can just tell them the world's reaction to their efforts, I don't go insane.

That's just good science.  :)

Thanks Chrono. Couldn't have said it myself. Well, maybe I could've, but we'll never know now. :)

There will be times when I'll roll for you to continue my description, and other times, most of the time, you'll roll. It's also much easier for you to check your CS rather than me checking up to 5 at a time. I did warn you that this game was rather skill based.

Just so you know, there will be less rolling in the actual game, but I want you to get used to the game mechanics and your character. At some point, I expect you'll be offering rolls and checks in your posts before I ask, taking initiative with your interactions.

But we'll see if anyone else has an opinion on this before I make a final call.

Re: OOC

I think time wise it is actually quicker to say 'There was a perception check and you got 43. While you are tied up naked and spread-eagled you notice a randy looking man approaching and whispering the words "Oh look a guard"'

Than it is to say

"Roll a perception check?"
"I got a 43"
OK so you made your perception check and now While you are tied up naked and spread-eagled you notice a randy looking man approaching and whispering the words "Oh look a guard"'

I know for a character inspired perception it is better to roll yourself when you delare the check you are making.

Re: OOC

So you have a valid point, my little green friend. Thanks for bringing it to the table. After all, I'm not wholey inflexible. And on rare occasions, I may even make a mistake.

I've said this in our other thread, but I'll say it again here.

You can roll your check and give a result in a PM. I can give you a result there to carry in to your next post.

But here's your alternative. This is a writing forum, a place that allows you to flex your creative literary muscle. For instance, you're in a situation where I've given you a brief look at a scene. There are some easily noticeable details, and I've asked you for a perception check (in this case to get you used to the idea of doing so) and an insight check. At some point, I won't ask, and I won't give, unless you offer the use of your skill yourself. You might say, "why didn't I see that? I should have noticed that." And I'll tell you it was because you didn't tell me what you were looking for, or listening for, or trying to deduce, or trying to recall.

From a character's perspective, I might write in a response like this:

There was something odd about the way the old man looked at Heraclitus. While straightening and wiping his mouth to ensure there was no food stuck to his face, Heraclitus ignored the background noise and gave the old man a good 'once over'. He paid particular attention to the man next to him as well.
The old man looked to be what they were after, and his buddy, as intimidating as he was, could very well be some muscle. The timing was right, but it was hard to be sure without being obvious. Luckily, Crossfire had already drawn their attention. Heraclitus, hand already in his pocket, took the opportunity to send a text. There didn't seem to be enough time to write a message - any messege- so two seconds later a blank SMS was sent to his teammate. They hadn't included a contingency plan, but hopefully she would understand.

and my rolls are x and x.

Just off the top of my head there.

Don't be in such a rush to get to the end. It's the journey that's important.

And this is why the tutorial is good. Gives a chance to see how it should go, get familiar with your character, and gives you a chance to ask some questions.

Table is still open if anyone still wants to pipe in.

Re: OOC

Great System and this forum is great for story tellin' but quite different than a table top game, and I might add that everyone I have played with from table top to this system has had to make significant changes in pacing, role-playing it self and mechanics, that being said, there are really two skill type situations and a method for rolling for skill successes/failures in each:

1. The character/player is active in using a skill, either tries to use a skill or is asked to use a skill by the GM to accomplish a task, and for the most part will be fairly clear on the degree of his role/success.

2. The Character is unaware of important matters and the GM needs to figure out what level of information to give the character.  This is where walking into a bar one would notice all varieties of things, just because he has skill, eyes and was in there...but what he actually sees or notices is dependant on a secret perception roll of the dice and level of difficulty.  Most...of the information gathering type skills can be used by the GM in the fashion.  I roll for my players all the time, and let them know in a Private Line if they succeeded or failed at a particular skill. But I don't tell them what it was used for, most of the time a success is apparent as to what happened.

A good rule is to always use your skills weaved into your role playing.  Be looking around, add rolls secretly in posts to save time if you want.  If they were useless no biggy, but if you hit on something then you have also save a little posting time.

Re: OOC

To the trio, seems you're about to enter into combat. Below you'll see a battle box, which will help both you and I keep track of rounds, Combat Actions (CA's), power points etc. It's usually a good idea to quote this post, copy the whole box from <small to small> and pasting in your Scratchpad, next to the Dice Roller. This way you'll have an original of your own. Quiksit, you'll need to add in your extra appendage, the moveable penis for those that don't know, into the Hit Locations. Anything with an x should get replaced with your appropriate numbers. The combat skills should vary and be replaced according to what's useful to your character. Any ongoing affects that may affect your combat should be listed under that heading, and the same with other modifiers, such as if you activate a STR boost, put that in. This box will change on every CA, and obviously everyone gets a turn.

After you've got your battle box ready, roll a Strike Rank (SR) which is 1d10, add your bonus and include it in the box. Then post this to me. This will eventually be a PL while you post, but for now we're all seeing what we're doing. Those of you who have used some power points already should take that into account when you put your numbers in.

Post questions about this here so everyone can benefit.

When you quote msg#85, highlight everything from this: <small
to this at the bottom: small>

The symbols < and > usually indicate a varied use of the text. In this case, the small is directing how the table will appear.

So go hit the quote button on msg#85, copy the table, and paste it in your Scratchpad. Fill in the blanks with your info, then copy and paste into a post in our thread. When you and Crossfire have done this, we'll proceed.

Re: OOC

If you recall, I gave you a certain percentage base to use in addition to disguise, which is an advanced skill. We're still in tutorial mode, so you can go back and exchange some points to buy this. Your argument is valid, however because of mechanics, the reason perception is not used in this case is because an opponent trying to see through your disguise would be rolling a perception check. This would be a perception vs perception. Instead, your power disguises you, therefore it's a disguise roll. Since you don't have the skill, I still allowed for you to use your base chance.

Initially, we figured it was just your power that allowed you to disguise yourself. The power can advance, and if you get the skill that can help and advance as well. So here's what I'll do. I'll give you disguise as a freebie, directly associated with your power. You'll get the base of Cha+Dex, and you'll have your bonus from the power.

Heroclitorus you can play Barry for any normal activity that happens.  You already have the basic text of what he want to happen... find the right spot to dump Blackwolf... say his text and get out to a private spot where he will turn into a random punter but one he has used often before so that his companions know him, and to add further to that his shirt carries the logo "Aliens 1, Barry 0".
Then he will go to the booth and try and talk his way in without a chip.
"Can you repeat the last command given to you before I sat down?" might be a good in.

Also watched Dorkness Rising, and that wasn't fantastic, but once again not bad either. Had some good laughs with the Bard. And since I never saw the original Gamers season 1, I went back to watch that. Slow start, but I was pissing myself by the 3rd and 4th part. Especially when the elf lifted the bars. Re: OOC

Topic for discussion:

I've been going over what "prone" means in the rules with Chronotetro (thanks mate), and we've both agreed that the rules are a bit scant when it comes to details. So we've come up with a bit of home rules that seem to make it a bit more reasonable and fair, filling in the blanks if you like. At least it seems to make sense to us.

Ideas are as follows:

Falling prone will cost you the CA to attempt to parry, +1 more when you try to get up.  This is the base penalty for being tripped or otherwise falling prone.

Unarmed (combat skill) of up to 50%:
In addition to costing a CA to get up, you must roll an athletics (or evade) check to successfully regain your feet; failed check means still prone.  During the CA of getting up, you are still at -20% to defensive/offensive actions as if still prone, and this is only if the character has CA's left.  If last CA of the round is being used to get up and the enemy has more CA's left, then normal rules apply.

Unarmed (combat skill) of 51% to 69%:
In addition to costing a CA to get up, you are still at -20% to defensive/offensive actions as if still prone, and this is only if the character has CA's left.  No roll required to stand up. If last CA of the round is being used to get up and the enemy has more CA's left, then normal rules apply.

Unarmed (combat skill) of 70%+/Martial Arts:
Only costs a CA to get back up; no penalty and no roll required.

Reasoning behind it all is that if you go by the stumble rules, it's a little harsh with 1d3 CAs lost. So we figured it's only on a fumble that this should take place. Without CAs lost, the rules seem to assume that anyone can just pop back up in the next CA with no penalty, as if they do it every day. Hence the introduction of skill checks. Figuring that someone either trained in fighting (ie Martial Arts) or just skilled from practice (higher Unarmed Combat skill) is better able to pop back up immediately, with less penalty. More of a reward system than a penalty system really.

So, with that, I open it up.

Couldn't you then say martial arts training bumps the result up one category, for example...

Cat 1 (unarmed <51%) = 1CA + -20% + Roll to get up
Cat 2 (unarmed 51-70%) = 1CA + -20%
Cat 3 (unarmed 71-99%) = 1CA
Cat 4 (unarmed 100%+) = no penalty

Re: OOC

I think there needs to be some kind of penalty to being tripped, otherwise it's simply a successful parry.  So if you fail your parry against a Combat Maneuver, then it at least costs you the additional CA to recover.

Re: OOC

The one thing PRONE was consistent on was the penalty of -20% while prone. The principal I'm trying to introduce is, since we're in a skill based system, rewarding the higher skill set in a practical scenario, while penalising the lower skill set. Let's face it, someone who can't fight would get get the crap beat out of them in a real fight.

I agree with Chrono, there has to be a penalty for the CM to be of value, even if it is only 1 CA lost. And I think it's feasible that skill in MA would bump you up on the table rather than just give you the best scenario.

I'd like to hear from Hexus as well, as she is the resident veteran of this system.

To be frank I found getting tripped frigging easy and the penalties disproportionately harsh.

If I'd known all I had to do was say I trip him, roll an unarmed check, have him fail his parry and then:
-he loses combat rounds when he falls
-loses rounds again when he rises
-defends like shit while he's down

Then do you think ever single combat action of mine isn't going to be a boring as batshit "I trip him".

I think we're polishing a turd.

Tripping someone isn't all that easy though. You have to earn a CM on a successful attack first, then have the opponent fail a second roll- athletics check, to fall prone. You basically have to burn that CM on a chance of getting him prone. That's why it needs to be worth it to get them there.

This game system also doesn't really allow "called shots", hence the D20 roll for location.  You can say you're going to trip as many times as you like, but where the D20 falls is where you're actually going to land the shot.

Unless you get a CM as mentioned.  In this case, not only did you succeed but they also failed.  Considering that if you're throwing a punch and they're attempting to parry and both can technically succeed (winner is the higher roll), it's of great value to succeed at the same time as they fail.  In this case, one CM option is to trip- so you get to cash in on that value.  But then they have to fail an athletics check as well before they go down.  The system rewards strategy as much as it does luck, while simultaneously making it more challenging to keep the same set of moves.

There's actually a cumulative bonus enemies get if you do the same attack twice or more in one fight.  They start to "learn" your moves, and therefore get better at defending against them.

Re: OOC

I really don't mind, but to add my thoughts from a newbie ...

Trip is a CM selectable no matter what the location of the successful hit. I believe this is flawed from an offensive CM, but more believable as a defensive CM. Most takedowns in MMA are when catching your opponent off balance, often whilst they are attacking. This of course implies martial arts training. Tripping offensively should require targeting the legs. Tripping defensively should require martial arts.

Second comment is that the avoid trip roll is against the original successful to hit roll, which is biased towards the tripper as their roll is a known good roll.

Third comment, a trained martial artist can easily take advantage of falling prone and turning it into an offensive move, such as sweeping the other's leg, or any number of grappling techniques. I agree it should cost a CA to regain your feet, but not necessarily lose the initial CA.

There is little benefit to take martial arts as a skill, except for 'colour'. I think helping in a trip situation (either offensively or defensively) is logical and not so imbalanced.

Re: OOC

Actually, the Martial Art skill gives you quite a bit, combat related. It gives you:

Extra 1d3 to damage
Extra CA for defense
CMs (accumulative to skill level), which you can use any time you succeed in your MA roll. Almost a free CM.
Extra Weapon proficiencies.

And now we're talking about adding the benefit of better maneuverability to prone. In this system, all of that is quite a bit.

While I agree with your MMA reference, I have to get back to the core reasons for CMs. They are added danger, taking advantage of your opponent when you've either hit really well or they've parried horribly. Unfortunately, we haven't seen it work in the reverse much yet, where a parry can incur a CM as well.

Your third point would still be apt. If your skill is high enough, having the -20% to attack from the ground is less of a burden. I dare say that anyone investing in MA would also have a decent Unarmed as well.

Re: OOC

The free CM if you succeed a MA roll is interesting, so this is in addition to the CMs you get normally?

The last comment about the -20% not being a big deal as you probably have a decent unarmed skill % anyway is bogus. The fact you could have spent your MA skill points on unarmed instead, having one super skill rather than 2 OK skills is more to the point.

But I'm good with whatever.

Re: OOC

On point 1: I believe so, and I will get confirmation.

On point 2: Not so bogus when you add in all the bonuses I described in my previous post. And hey, there are shit martial artists out there too. The good ones can attack from the ground very well. The ones that aren't so good would have a harder time. It's not that I don't see where you're coming from, but a character that's main thing is a fighter can have high percentage in both, but of course this sacrifices their other in-game skills that would round a character out.

On point 3: Good.

Re: OOC

Sorry I am just checking into this OOC conversation a bit late.

The martial arts skill is a static skill and is not actively rolled against. It is a different skill than most of the skills, similar to Manipulation. It's purpose is to give a fighter type access to different combat maneuvers than what's in the book, along with other benefits like changing or adding to base hand to hand damage and adding more to CAs for specific situations.

The combat maneuver in question is not in addition to, it is just a differen choice. If you were allotted 1 combat maneuver then you would choose 1 from  either list. People without MA only get the CMs in the book.

Fighting is still the Unarmed  skill not the MArts skill, it is more of a style you can add to your fighting ability and gives flexibility.

Someone should take martial arts if they like the new CMs and want he few extra perks it gives.

Here is the big point. You don't need Martial Arts to describe your fighting style in a martial arts style, you would just describe your "book" CMs from a martial arts point of view.

Another point...the best fighter in the group is the guy with the 95% in unarmed, not the guy who is 45% Unarmed and 45% Martial arts, although this system allows the under dog a chance based on die roles.

I would need to know more about the -20% in question before I comment on it.

Thanks for the input, Hexus. To clarify, I believe at one stage you had told me that you get the MA CM if you roll under your MA skill on a successful attack, regardless of the standard rules of CMs. These are only a second list to choose from now?

So in your opinion, what is the benefit of taking MA instead of adding the points to Unarmed?

The -20% is in the Combat section in RQ2, prone is listed in various spots therein.

Re: OOC

If you roll under your MA skill, using your unarmed attack skill you can choose to use a MA Ccombat maneuver if you qualify(bad guy fails a parry etc.) you also get the damage change at 2d3 if rolling under.

For the most part the MA combat maneuvers are better than the book so it makes sense if you qualify to choose one of them.

MA skill does Not allow you two combat maneuvers in the place of one.

The skill is a flavor skill, an enhancer, and more flexibility with fighting styles, and the end combat manuevers are pretty devastating.

Does the book let you do a pressure point attack that deadens limbs or worse...hmm...hmmm? It might I'm on phone and can't check that statement. But I don't think it does unless you are using some type of power.

I've got no idea what damage it does, hence the question in my post. Once you've worked out what dice it's going to do then you can just roll it for me if you want to move it along.

If it's less damage than punching then we're going to have words about this game system too. If it's a decent sized dice (greater than D10) or multiples of (greater than 2D6) then my crit is a head shot.

However if the dice for guns is poxy (<D10 or < 2D6) then he really did trip on my bullet (however improbable) and I'll move in and kick him to death if that's actually more effective.

The reason I ask is that I've seen system's before with crappy bullet damage and I'm hoping this isn't one of them.

I went with 1d10+2 for a large hand cannon like yours. Significant. Next time, you should roll your body location before choosing your CM, just in case you already rolled a head shot or something. There are CMs that you can only use with a crit, so you should familiarise yourself with it.

Happy New Year back to you and all the rest of you as well.

A human head in this system has 6 hp and if you exceed that the target still gets to roll a save. A D10+2 will give you 7 or more 50% of the time. Allowing for the save as well do we really consider that more than 50% of people shot in the head with an 8mm round at close range survive it?

Just asking, it's your system and I can adapt to whatever you decide, also I accept Yanks are no doubt much more familiar with gunshot survival statistics than a boring old Aussie.

Well, you'll want the resilience check when it's your head. By the way, if I bother with a resilience roll at all for the plebs, I make it pretty difficult. But I think head shots in particular in the book are resilience check or die instead of resilience or pass out. Imagine a shot being accurate but glancing off the skull or something. Still needs a hospital after passing out though. And hey, I've heard of guys surviving knives in the head and all sorts of oddities. So let's not count it out of the realms of possibilities.

The silent killer? That luring demon that seems so necessary, carrying that carrot on the stick, just out of reach to keep you chasing.

"Work," he whispered, strained. "Responsibil-" He couldn't finish. The pain was too great.

Silently, he vowed to slip away, secretly returning to the world he'd built within his own mind. Even if it came in only bits and pieces. Knowing there were others out there depending on him for the same thing gave him the fire to push and cry out. Though the claws dragged at him to pull him back under, he managed one message to the outside.

With luck, they would hear it. With effort, he would get better at finding more opportunity to sneak out, to give his word to the people.

It would be a really shit outcome for him to fade out now leaving an uber gun in the room full of baddies he's guarding on his own.

Here's hoping for a generous DM for us newbies.

Re: OOC

Maybe I'll give you a few rounds before he fades out. That should be long enough to finish up and get back, right? Let's say...3 rounds?

There's a method being used by some other folks where at the top of your post, you can write quickly the round you're in, what CA you're on, what pp you have and what you have left in parenthesis. As follows:

Round 1, CA2, PP30 (14)

Gives me a quick look and makes it easy to backtrack up the posts to see where you're at. Make it a PL to me. When you use a power that requires PP then you should be telling me in a PL how much you've used, if you're manipulating it in any way, etc. The battle box was meant to help with all of that, but not everybody is using it.

I already know Hexus and Chrono are fans of the above method. What say the rest of you clowns?

I must say that really blows as a character special weapon... especially since one of the grunts in the corridor is using a 2d6 hand gun.

Can I make an appeal for it to do more... I'd even take the 2d6 as better... at least then it is a silent kind of handgun... but I am hoping it would do more than an assault rifle.

No, your standard rifle does 1d12, however your compact version does less. I wasn't willing to give you full damage ability in something that doubles as a phone.

You guys need to remember that it only takes 5 to 6 points of damage to take someone's head off most of the time. Nothing wrong with something that does 1d8 damage, let alone 1d12.

By the way, the only reason that gun from the man in the hall did 2d6 was because he had a success on a burst. Normal damage is 1d6, which is what the other gun did. The guard squeezed off a burst, made a success. So I rolled the second one with negative modifier, which also succeeded so he got the second d6. It's not something that happens that often and one of the benefits of the automatic. More damage, less likely to hit due to inaccuracy.

Re: OOC

The Lizard's voice boomed embarrasingly next to her. They had been here for several days since their last unsanctioned mission had ended, and QuikTemper was getting impatient.

The impromptu rescue mission hadn't exactly been a precision surgical strike, and the cleanup operation from their employer was still underway. Until the fallout could be fully assessed the team was benched and confined to headquarters.

Crossfire hadn't been seen since they arrived. Vibro assumed he was in the bathroom admiring his reflection. It was not unusual for Crossfire to disappear for long periods of time, only to be found 'studying' the effects of light refraction off various reflective surfaces.

Crossfire's last visit to Coney Island had nearly ended in disaster after he became trapped inside the hall of mirrors for 6 days. Some say it was his sniper training that allowed him to survive the long days in isolation without food or water. Others believe it was due to him being found in a trance like state, the meditation transcending him to a higher state of being where physical nourishment was not required. Vibro suspected however, that it was simply because his brain cell couldn't cope with the sensory overload.

Re: OOC

Quiksit was enjoying romping round the house in his real form.  Human suits were so ugly.  Vibro always looked at him oddly when he was in the full Lizard, she seemed to have trouble reading him. Maybe she was just working out how to start the next fight.

Quiksit turned on the television, looking for ideas, the News might have something good. There was a movie about a bank robbery, but Quiksit didn't think that fit with being the good guys like they clearly were.  He simply kept working away at the electronic components that he was refurbishing from his ship, trying to get them back into order.  Mostly he was having to cannibalize parts for the work, and that was going to leave him with some major replacement issues shortly... but at least some working components would be better than none.
He'd have to make a trip out to the ship soon to get new components to work on.  It was a slow process.
"Oh", Quiksit exclaimed, there was a nice civil war on in the Middle East. Perhaps the right team of good guys could hit the leadership of the evil oppressors... but he wasn't sure that evil oppressors wasn't a description of both sides.  Maybe the right team could collect from both leaderships and then whack them both... it had potential.  Quiksit knew that Crossfire had done mercenary work before... he'd have to mention it to him when he finally came out of the bathroom.  He'd been in there a while, Quiksit had been sticking his finger down the kitchen sink... he was unsure what Vibro had been doing?

There was something he vaguely remembered about a small boy and a dragon... Quiksit was keen to meet a dragon.  They didn't have any where he came from but they certainly seemed real enough on Sol IV. After all Saint George had killed one, and the church wouldn't be Sainting people who hadn't proved their feat.

A couple of good questions thrown at me that I'll answer publicly. (That way Hexus can correct me if I'm wrong, though this time I'm going by the book. Ha!)

1. Improvement roll modifier gives you that number of extra rolls for a skill improvement. If you have +1, you get to pick another skill and roll again for improvement. I understand that some of you are adverse to actually reading the book, so I've copied the description here for you:

Improvement Roll Modifier
Every Adventurer has an Improvement Roll Modifier, based on the CHA characteristic, of between –1 and +1, or more. This represents the relationship an Adventurer has with his community, peers and colleagues, who offer their services or advice, or, if CHA is particularly low, the difficulty of attempting to improve one’s capabilities without the assistance of others.
The number of Improvement Rolls an Adventurer has to spend is modified by the value of the Improvement Roll Modifier. So, in the case of Edric, his Improvement Roll Modifier is zero. In the two examples given earlier Edric would receive four and two Improvement Rolls respectively, as the Games Master has decided to allocate them.
Lilina, on the other hand, has CHA 16 and therefore an Improvement Roll Modifier of +1. Lilina is very confident in her personality and this is abstracted in her ability to seek advice, make use of friends, colleagues and others in her community and make the most of her experiences. In the two examples earlier she would gain five Improvement Rolls (instead of the four the Games Master awards) and three Improvement Rolls rather than two.
Conversely Thrace, with a CHA of 5, is a somewhat sullen individual who tends to keep himself to himself, probably because he lacks confidence socially or because he is, genuinely, anti-social. This places
him at a disadvantage in his development and his Improvement Roll Modifier of –1 means that, in the examples from earlier, he gains only three and one Improvement Rolls respectively.

2. Hero Points - what are they and what are they used for? Again, a copy from the book:

Hero Points
Hero Points are part of the currency of RuneQuest. Hero Points allow Adventurers to differentiate themselves from the rank and file, using Hero Points earned to gain an advantage over opponents, find a way through tricky situations, or mitigate that killing blow that gets through even the best Adventurer’s defence.
Every character starts with a fixed number of Hero Points that are used throughout his adventures and Quests. New Adventurers start the game with two Hero Points and more can be earned as the game progresses.
At the conclusion of a story, each character should receive two Hero Points. This can be modified if the character performed particularly poorly or heroically, giving a range of between zero and four Hero Points awarded. However Hero Points need not be reserved for the end of a story: if an Adventurer performs some action or deed that the Games Master deems especially heroic, or which significantly adds to the atmosphere or progression of the story, then he can make an immediate award, at his discretion. Such awards are never a right and cannot be demanded by players for their characters; they are always the Games Master’s decision. In these cases ad-hoc awards should be of a single Hero Point and no Adventurer should benefit from more than one such award per story.
Edric’’s Saga
In a battle with a group of trollkin, Thrace saves the day through a mixture of quick thinking, deft tactics and mighty thrusts with his long spear. As his initiative saves the lives of Edric and Lilina, the Games Master makes him an immediate award of one Hero Point at the end of the combat. At the end of the story’s session and following more heroics from all three Adventurers, the Games Master awards each of them two Hero Points.
Using Hero Points
Hero points can be used in a variety of ways. Each of the following options costs a single Hero Point. Once spent, a Hero Point is gone for ever.
Last Chance Combat Action: If an Adventurer has exhausted his Combat Actions during a fight and needs to find that last burst of desperate energy to perhaps avoid a messy end, he may spend a Hero Point to gain a Combat Action.
Second Chance: An Adventurer can re-roll any dice roll that affects his character. This can be a Skill Test, damage roll or anything else that has some effect on him. He can even force an opponent to re-roll an attack or damage roll made against him.
For example Edric is engaged in an opposed Skill Test with his great rival, Owain. Both are attempting to impress the fair Selena with their storytelling skills (using Influence). Owain has rolled a critical success, beating Edric’s normal success. Edric thus spends a Hero Point forcing Owain to re-roll his Influence skill: the re-roll results in a failure for Owain and so Edric wins the contest and impresses the giggling Selena through a last minute recollection of the heroic fight against the Trollkin...
Glancing Blow: An Adventurer who suffers a Major Injury may spend a Hero Point to downgrade the wound to a Serious Injury. This reduces the damage taken to one Hit Point less than what would be required to inflict a Major Wound.
Heroic Insight: A Hero Point may be spent to gain a hint or clue from the Games Master that helps the Adventurer resolve a situation that has him at an impasse.
For example, Edric is trapped within the troll’s lair and can hear troll guards bearing down on him. Panicked by the situation, he is truly stuck for what to do next. Edric spends a Hero Point for a Heroic Insight: the Games Master smiles and informs Edric’s player that, suddenly, he feels a vague draft of air against his cheek that could only have come from the crack of a concealed doorway. This prompts Edric to search and he finds the exit just in time. The Heroic Insight has saved his life.

Heroic Abilities: The character may spend Hero Points to acquire a Heroic Ability he has qualified for. For more details see the Heroic Abilities chapter beginning on page 156.

Heroic Abilities is an entire chapter in RQ2, so I won't be copying that one. Look it up if you'd like.

I'm likely to allow a more creative use for these Hero Points, depending on the creativity of course.

Yep, all correct. If hairy litmus gives everyone 3 imp. rolls, anyone with a bonus gets another improvement roll.
I allow my players to make improvement rolls all on the same skill. So in effect one could focus on a low skill and make it desirable to use.

Re: OOC

So if we're moving onto the game proper and if I'm expected to level up, am I cheaky to check that each different type of weapon I use requires me to invest skill points in it. There's no general gunplay skill which is synergistic with pistol, assault rifle & sniper rifle specialties. It seems I'm blowing an awful lot of skill points in simple gunplay by speading it across 3 ballistic weapons and 1 laser weapon. Is that what others eg the bad guys do (or are we the bad guys)?

If I am expected to level up, what was that earlier bonus we were awarded as I should add that on at the same time.

Re: OOC

Depending on what your actual skill ranks are, I would devote increases in one skill are, like pistol or rifle.  Bad guys, typically have one that is better than the others.

Although, if Hypocretes allows, all semi-auto rifles can fall under one skill catagory.  So sniper and rifle could go together.

Re: OOC

That would require me to be awfully generous. I

Actually, I think I had set up a way where rifles fall under one category, handguns under another, but then set up specialty skills. The reality is that a sniper would be better with a sniper rifle, infantry better with an assault rifle etc. Maybe I'd better review the system mechanics. The only reason I really hesitate is because I don't want to you an advantage in skills over the others.

Hexus, with ancient style weapons (ie. swords, clubs, staff), does skilling up with one type of sword mean you can use all the same types?  I think if this is the case then guns should be the same way.

Feel free to weigh in Chrono.

I'm currently set up in a similar but more restrictive way to that Q. with 4 specific skills already, namely: rifles, sidearm, automatic & energy.

I'd love heavy weapons as well but can see the writing on the wall, in that if pistols and rifles have no synergy component and require full point buy with each weapon ... then surely rocket launchers being dissimilar to chain guns to mounted 50 cal machine guns ... I worry exactly how many skills I'm going to burn up in weapons to fit my character background.

If that's how we're gonna roll then I'm happy with it, I just wanted to confirm before I go and lay some skill rolls on ya'll.

Re: OOC

I would of thought that a generic 'firearms' skill would suffice to say 50% level, and then you would need some specialist skills. Sidearm vs rifle vs laser rifle seems a good balance. There are any number of variances eg. A laser rifle is very different to a ballistic rifle when it comes to aiming allowing for wind etc, but a laser pistol and ballistic pistol aren't necessarily as different as it is more about quick draw point and shoot.

Re: OOC

Crossfire's starting package was generous with skilling up his classes of firearms. And then he has specialist skills that he individually pumped up. The theory was, basic training got him to a professional level of use with just about everything, and then his continual training boosts the specialties. You've got to think of it in terms of the dynamics of the system, where 50% is proficient, 60% + is professional and over 70% is a master. Just because Quiks has gotten to over a 100%, we now have a God level of skill. Yes, Kudos is yours if you didn't have powers to boost it up. So don't fret the rest of you, he didn't really put all of his points ever into one skill, except just this last time.

This time I waited till we got to the end of the mission to hand out skill boosts, but I'm likely to be a little more frequent from here on in. Despite the 18 months it took to get there, we're early days in the grand scheme of things. You'll all have all your favorite skills over 100% by the end.

But so will your enemies!

Besides, I haven't really given anything to Hexus and Chrono, and I don't hear them complaining.

Re: OOC

I don't think Crossfire was complaining just clarifying... and it sounds like you have done the right thing anyway... establish a "Point and shoot" line... in his case a professional "Point and shoot" line of 60%... and that is what guns tend to need.

If one were actually to attempt realism the pointing and shooting is much easier than game systems make it out to be... it is the 'gumption' to pull the trigger that is difficult... most soldiers don't aim too hard... they don't really want to take life.

And most of the skill in the weapons would actually be in maintenance... not in the marksmanship... which after a certain point looks after itself.

Sorry Cross, Vibes is right. You need to use a CA to draw your knife, unless you have a special ability or skill (like quickdraw) that allows you to. Them's the rules as I understand them. And you're wearing a firman's suit to boot. Not saying you can't access it, but getting it out and using it immediately might not be easy.

So you agree it was miraculous. Although what common folk equate to miracles is often simply a manifestation of powers.

If I recall correctly, Crossfire MK1 had the ability to store and draw weapons from within some extradimensional space. It simply appears to me as though that power has started to manifest in new Crossfire, albeit a little less potently.

I'm glad you agree.

I didn't think it counted for much but as you've pulled me up on it I'll make it a punch next time, I just thought it sounded cooler and that's what I thought you were after in the text.

I've been reading my way through the Raymond Feist novels lately and it's the sort of things his characters do without batting an eyelid. If they had to roll and risk failing for such basic abilities then no one would ever read the books.

No biggie, just giving some feedback on the system.

Crossfire is a little uncertain about the situation you're in.

Picture Aliens, when the group finds themselves standing in what can only be a nest and things are hatching all over the place.

I thought that was clear.

Truth be told, it was meant to be slightly obscure because that's the situation you're in. Dark, wet, and only a flashlight showing bits at a time. Scary noises and trapped in that dank place, you're sure to die. All of you. And it'll be horrific. Maybe Quiksit will escape, because he's in the chute and may yet make a good climb check to get back up and out. Maybe it's not really Quiksit after all. He is the only one that didn't go in after all. And it is his type. Wouldn't be the first time someone did the ol' switcheroo.

Re: OOC

Hi all, I'm back and working my way to being in action again. As it turns out, sailing isn't so easy when you don't have the stomach for it.

Quiks, when are you off?

And Crossfire, I have to look into the rules a bit more to see what it says on emptying a clip. My first thoughts were to have you spend an extra CA and for every subsequent bullet you'll have a cumulative -20%. It's what I did with the Sellecks. However, we need to be sure you have either an auto or a semi-auto to do that too. Otherwise, no extra shots.

Lemme get back to after I've looked into this.

Re: OOC

Semi auto

http://www.militaryfactory.com....asp?smallarms_id=12

-20 to hit for each subsequent round is kinda harsh for a semi auto weapon. Machine gun inaccuracy for multiple shots past the third is legendary but I'm not sure about shooting off a handgun more frequently than a bullet every 10 seconds.

Lizardman lifted off from Earth Friday, rumour has it he was relocating to a sub tropical clime where he could better chase tail.

Re: OOC

My apologies guys. Had a few things going on and I just haven't had the energy or headspace to contribute lately. I've been also looking into this whole multiple shot thing for Crossfire and not getting a lot of love. We're using RQ2 rules for combat and trying to convert some of the BRP rules over when it comes to modern weapons and powers etc. There are a few things about guns with bursts and some about how light weapons have up to 3 attacks per round. I'm trying to work out how this translates to CA's. So far, I'd think that heavy pistols like the Muertos only get 1 shot per CA due to the large kickback while the light get up to 3, but you still have to roll 1 att roll to hit, then 1d6 halved to see how many of the 3 hit. Anyway, still trying to work it out when I don't get so frustrated that I just shut it down altogether.

If I don't find a resolution to the multiple shot thing soon, I'll just make a call and we'll run with it. Those that are willing to read the rules can offer up an opinion.

Hope everyone is well.

Everyone is Fing brilliant, thanks for asking.

I actually couldn't give a flying fuck how multiple shots works so why don't we just call it I fire once and save you from thinking.

At some point Vera will make an in game appearance and you'll want to have a concept in mind. However based on past experience I reckon this dungeon crawl will take 12 months before I can get back to the car/apartment to caress Vera lovingly in my hot hands.

Re: OOC

Okay, Vibro gave the hard word, so I'm trying to get us back on track. First up is the trio. I've decided to go ahead with only one shot per CA for the big hand gun at this point, and hopefully later I'll figure out about semi and fully automatics. I also figured that since she had a chance to evade, and that it was successful, it didn't really matter. So she's used her defence CA and responded with an offensive CA. It's now over to Crossfire to make a defensive action if he wants to. If not, back up to the top of the SR.

As for you Hexus and Chrono, I'll endeavor to pick your posts back up and move them along soon too.

Apologies for the hiatus. I'll try not to make it a regular thing.
