Guiding the others back to Mythstraisia, the it was not long before the Rangers turned around and headed back to continue the logging operation under the cover of darkness. With fewer numbers, it would be easier for them to avoid detection. Not to mention that their outpost required more resources than they had initially found. Taking some of the tools with them, they disappeared back into the night, blending into the forest's underbrush as they had been trained to do long ago.
Taking the lumber they had cut with their own hands, the others took their rest save for Talonrel, Joachim, and Sam. It was for them to figure out which of their plans and schematics to attempt first with their newfound supplies. Talking throughout the night over ale and wine, they woke up the outpost several times with their heated discussions. Tempers often flared as each one advocated for a different pet project that should take priority. As the sun came up, it was decided that they should construct the new longbows they had designed. While their outpost was coming along quite nicely, the image of the Rangers of the Swift Arrow blending back into the forest weighed heavily on their minds. As it was, they were still using the ill-fitting equipment they had borrowed from the stores that were meant for humans. If anything, their equipment was holding them back rather than aiding them. With the bandits that the Rangers had already dispatched, the leaders were acutely aware that the outpost was quite undefended. It was time to create something that was tailor made for the Rangers in order to assist them rather than hold them back.
Gathering everyone together, they began the process of crafting the longbows. The design was quite ingenious. The problem with the elven longbow was that, despite its innate accuracy, it was rather fragile due to its willowy nature. As a result, it was difficult to place a good deal of strength into the shots. In contrast, the longbow that had been used by humans for centuries was one that was quite durable, but lacked the accuracy of the elves' longbow due to it not having the same shape and springy material. In order to couneract these problems, they had designed counterweights in order to make up for the power deficit of the elven bow while thickening the grip in order to provide extra durability to assure that the bow would not snap from the draw. It was the best of both worlds. Now, it was just a matter of testing it out to see how it worked in practice.
