The Quill and Anvil Tavern

-=The Quill and Anvil Tavern=-

Built from a re-purposed storage warehouse, the Quill and Anvil Tavern is a two level building styled after old Scandineighvian "Long Stables" with some inspiration from Trottingham Public Houses as well.  It has exposed timbers, thatch roofing, all made to look old and aged but up to code beneath the facade.

Customers enter through a pair of large, heavy doors over which swings a carved sign in the shape of a flat-topped shield.  "Scrollwork" is spread across the top, with the name of the establishment written in an 'ye olde' style font and the shield itself boasts the Quill and Anvil cutie mark of it's owner.

The bottom floor has an open floor plan with three main eye-catching features.  To the far right is a small stage, and while no entertainment has yet to be presented it is there for a small band or single artist and their instrument.

Right in the middle and the most eye-catching is the fire pit, used both for light and warmth the stone pit is a conversation piece with long tables surrounding it and seats on the outer side of those tables.  While the fire pit does have a stone "bench" due to how it is built, that's really only usable as seating when the fire isn't lit as being that close might make the patron sitting there uncomfortably warm.

Far left would be the bar as well as entrance to the kitchen and the root cellar.
The bar is fashioned from thick, dark mahogany and polished to a shine.  There are low, pony-style stools as well as a low placed brass bar that acts as a hoof rest for bar patrons.  The wall behind the bar is lined with various bottles.

The rest of the first floor is dotted with heavy wooden tables and heavy wooden seats with comfortable cushions.

Opposite the front doors are two simple open door ways.  One, clearly marked, leads to the restrooms.  The other is a hallway that ends with three intricately carved doors; these doors lead to the three 'royal suites' that the Quill and Anvil offers, one for each Princess of Equestria: The Solar, Lunar and Star suites.

Each door is patterned with scenes that represent each Princess, as well as a carving of their cutie mark, and a large brass door handle.  Naturally each door has a corresponding key marked with the respective Princess' cutie mark.

The Second Floor holds rooms for rent, a mix of "single" and "Double" rooms, each with their own bathroom as well.

[ENTER FROM:: SWEET APPLE ACRES]

Wordsmith was an easy pony to keep up with.  Not one for rushing if he could manage it, he and Beamer walked through town from Sweet Apple Acres.  The blue stallion pointing out things and places to the green stallion as they trotted at an amiable pace through town

Then, they were there... where ever Wordsmith was taking Beamer, which was apparently a two story building with a sign matching the mark on his flank carved beautifully into a piece of wood.

[ENTER FROM:: SWEET APPLE ACRES]

Beamer enjoyed the tour, taking particular interest in the local radio station. You never know when you might need a 100K Watt antenna.

He halted as his guide stopped in front of a medieval style building. One comparison between the symbol carved into the door and the mark on the blue stallion's flank told him all he needed to know.

"So I guess this is your place? Nice job on the retrofit."

Wordsmith blushed, smiling.  "Yeah" he said softly, looking at the building, "I poured every Bit I could into this building.  Money that my family gave me, every penny I earned with side jobs.  My winnings from a cooking contest.  All of it poured into the refitting, bringing up to code, all my business licenses."

"Stress... but I'm sure this is going to be worth it." He smiled, then he chuckled, "You read that letter you got outloud, and it included your name.  Moonbeam." he grinned

The larger stallion trotted for the wide, heavy, double doors and motioned back to Beamer, "Come on.  We'll get you set up in one of the single rooms on the second floor.  They have their own bathrooms, of course but no need for a kitchen, obviously."

In reply to Beamer (msg # 5):

Wordsmith blinked, recognizing that tone.  The frown was a give-away too.

"Ah.  Beamer, then." Was all he said, nodding.  After a moment though, "If it helps... I'm not a fan of 'wordie'.  That was used to tease me as a foal." he explained, using his magic to open the wide door.

Now Beamer was able to see the open first floor of the Quill and Anvil.  It was empty, so likely he hadn't opened it to the public yet.

Beamer raised an eyebrow.

"What? No. Sorry. I just don't like that name because it's not really who I am anymore. Parents named me that because of my white coat, but I got tired of that so I went made a chromatic adjustment," the earth pony explained as he followed Wordsmith inside.

Upon entering the green stallion looked around taking a few moments to examine the interior decore. "So did you do this all yourself or did you contract out some of the work?"

He shook his head, "No, I contracted out.  No way my fat flank could get up a work ladder, and no way I'm skilled enough to do work this good." he chuckled, tapping his temple, "I'm more an idea stallion."

Wordsmith pointed towards the bar, "You want a drink?  Got non-fermented stuff too."

Re: The Quill and Anvil Tavern

Wordsmith paused, "... Milk, in a dirty glass?" he grinned, nodding and popping around behind his bar, going into the kitchen to retrieve a bottle of milk and returning to Beamer.

"Well, yes" he said, speaking on the issue of dying coats.  As he talked he picked out a low, wide glass and set that on the bar's top, then pulled out a mortar and pestle.

He pulled out a chocolate chip cookie (having made a batch earlier to test his ovens) and popped that into the bowl, crushing it up.  Since he used his magic to move the pestle, he pulled out a bag containing fudge brownies and removed one from there with his hooves, breaking it into the glass and smushing it round with the pestle before pouring the broken cookie, getting the crumbs mixed in.

Wordsmith put more fudge brownie into a saucer and tipped the glass over, smushing the rim into it so it too would be covered.  Then he brought out some sugar-frosted corn flake cereal.  Crushing that up into the glass and onto the rim.

Then he poured the milk, fresh and cold, before putting it before Beamer, "I know, buttered toast crumbs are usually called for... but toast crumbs just bug me." he chuckled.

As Wordsmith was negotiating with his new tennant, hoofsteps were heard outside moments before the front door to the establishment opened in haste.

An out-of-breath brown stallion with a darker brown mane and tail stood propped on his hind legs, bracing himself against both sides of the doorframe with his forehooves.

"Pardon me.... .. Gentlecolts...." he had clearly been traveling at a gallop.  He forced himself to catch his breath as he dropped back to all fours, but remained in the doorway.

"Neither of you happened to see anything out of the ordinary did you?"  He waggled forelegs in "hoof-quotes" around the phrase "out of the ordinary."
